With the aid of the advanced electronic devices and micro-processors, the quality control of deep foundations can be carried out by Non-Destructive Tests (NDT). Three methods are presented here: the Sonic Logging, Vibration and Stress Wave Analysis Methods. The principles, equipments used, testing procedures and applications are fully described. The correlation of these methods with the conventional tests (mechanical coring and loading test) are studied to give a better understanding of the methods. Several case histories with the test results obtained from a number of sites in Hong Kong and overseas are discussed to show how the pile quality can be examined and especially, how to confirm the effectiveness of remedial works on a defective pile. Recommendation on the percentage of piles to be tested are given at the end of the paper by using statistical method.

Driving bridge foundation piles into glacio-fluvial sands and gravels and glacial tills brought surprisingly longer than predicted driving lengths on several recent projects in Vermont. In some instances, piles drove more than 40 feet past refusal depths predicted from Standard Penetration Resistances from borings terminating in glacial till. Overall, piles developed substantially less skin friction than predicted using common capacity formulas and drove as much as 80 feet longer than predicted in the moderate to dense gravelly and cobbly soils. These piles were driven for one to five span highway bridges within narrow valleys with bedrock ranging from 80 to over 200 feet deep. Piles were for both conventional and integral abutment bridges. H-piles were used for a variety of reasons including lower unit cost, better availability, and better ability to drive through cobbly soils in upper strata. Dynamic testing was used to evaluate capacity, including skin friction and end bearing capacity. In order to develop better pile length and capacity predictions for future projects, VTrans and one of their geotechnical consultants are collaborating to develop criteria for improved pile capacity predictions in these river valleys. We are doing this by evaluating driving and dynamic testing data from four projects in comparison with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) DRIVEN pile design software, and methods from Myerhof (1976) and Tomlinson (1981). Our overall objective is to provide a basis for choosing appropriate pile types and reliably estimating pile lengths for projects in this terrain. Bridge foundation design projects in other mountainous terrain share similar design and construction challenges to those encountered in these Vermont projects. These include: difficult exploration drill rig access requiring smaller rigs with limited capability to drill through cobbles and boulders deep enough to reach bedrock; limited experience with displacement piles as alternatives to H-piles in this geology; and relatively greater variability in soil stratigraphy between foundations at these sites as a consequence of the relatively high energy depositional environment in mountainous terrain. This paper presents the case history summaries of the pile driving, results of the ?back analysis? capacity evaluations, examples of solutions employed on these projects to address the lower capacities achieved, and resulting pile capacity design guidelines and prediction criteria for these geologic conditions based on data from these projects.

"The new Wembley Stadium is the most spectacular soccer stadium in the world, built to the highest specifications, using the latest technology and offering visitors an unrivalled match-day experience. Wembley Stadium is the home of English soccer, dating back to 1918 when the British Government began planning a British Empire Exhibition with a stadium as its centrepiece. The Empire Stadium, as it was originally known, was completed in 1924 in just 300 days and cost £750,000 ($1.4m). It was finally closed in 2000.The new Wembley Stadium, which opened in 2006, features fully covered seats for 90,000 fans and a striking arch that sits above the northern half of the stadium. With a span of 315 m (1040 ft), the 133-m (440-ft) tall arch is the longest single-span roof structure in the world. It supports the entire weight of the northern roof and 60% of the weight of the southern retractable roof. This means there is no need for columns within the stadium and ensures unobstructed views.Multiplex Constructions (UK) Ltd. employed Stent Foundations Limited to construct the £10m ($19m) foundations package for the new stadium. The scope of works for the foundation package included the design and construction of all foundations, including all main works piling, temporary works piles for the arch and roof, and tower crane piles. The scope also included trial piling and pile testing, setting out and removal of spoil.Piles were constructed by using bored cast-in-place techniques with both hydraulic and traditional crane-mounted rigs. Stent also installed sheet-piled walls at three locations to the site’s northern boundary. In addition to the main contract works, Stent constructed a £2m ($3.8m) contiguous bored-pile retaining wall within the demolition and earthworks package (Figure 1). This work was carried out as a subcontractor to Griffith McGee."

Driving of large piles in water can impact marine wildlife. Bubble curtains can mitigate these adverse effects. The procedures for and preliminary results of monitoring airborne, waterborne and groundborne vibrations with and without bubble curtains on a test project involving 2.438 m piles to 110 m is reported here. We observed fish kills and sea lions apparently fleeing the area. These phenomena were presumably due to the extreme acoustic effects of the powerful hammers which generated waterborne sound intensities locally in excess of 240 dB. This waterborne pile driving noise data collection undertaking is believed to be the most extensive ever attempted.

Mai- Liao, in Yun Lin province of Taiwan, which was once a remote area on the coast of the South China Sea, has been developed into an offshore industrial complex. Approximately 100 million m3 of imported sand fill were used to reclaim the site from the sea with an overall area of almost 3.000 hectares. Land reclamation started in March 1994 and was completed at the end of 1998. A total of 41 industrial plants were constructed on the site, including an oil refinery, a naphta cracking plant, a cogeneration plant, a coal- fired power station, a heavy machinery plant, a boiler making plant, water purification plant, several petrochemical plants and a new harbour. From 1998 onwards, new plants were taken into operation in uninterrupted succession. The main purpose of the ground improvement by vibro- displacement, used predominantly to form the foundations of the oil storage tanks , was to reduce the liquefaction potential of the subsoil during earthquakes. The top layer across the site was treated by dynamic compaction before the installation of the stone columns. Heavy structures such as chimney- stacks and buildings were constructed on pre- cast concrete piles driven by diesel hammer. The earthquake design criteria specified an earthquake magnitude M = 7.3 and an acceleration a = 0.21 g. Stone columns were installed by the dry bottom feed process, which was controlled by an automatic monitoring system, to depths ranging from 13 to 20 m to provide flexible tank foundations. Installation of 1.500.000 linear m of stone columns commenced at the beginning of 1997 and was completed in August 2000. 60 % of the stone columns, in particular the deep ones, have been carried out by Bauer vibrators. The Chi- Chi earthquake ( M = 7.3 ) took place on 21 September 1999 and was followed by Cha- I earthquake ( M = 6.8 ) on 22 October 1999. A survey carried out after these earthquakes showed very positive results. The maximum observed settlement was 10 mm and none of the tanks suffered any damage.

A unique tension pile where the pull is at a point a certain distance below the top of the pile. The pull is transferred by a cable consisting of high tensile strands. The HDPE duct of the cable prevents bond between the strands and pile concrete in upper portion. While soil friction on the pile will act downwards on the whole length, there is tension in the bottom portion of pile, there will be compression at the top portion.

Documented case histories from past earthquakes have exhibited the devastating effects of the liquefaction phenomenon on the performance of buildings that are often presented in the form of excessive settlement of shallow foundations. Example earthquakes include the 1964 Niigata earthquake in Japan, and more recently the 2010-2011 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence in New Zealand, and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan. All of the listed events comprised several examples of severe liquefaction-related damage to the buildings founded on shallow foundations. Although the liquefaction-induced building settlements have been experimentally studied extensively since 1964 using shake table tests and dynamic centrifuge experiments, studies focusing on cost-effective mitigation strategies are still limited. In this study, the performance of helical piles as a cost-effective countermeasure to minimize the damaging effects of liquefaction-induced ground settlements on buildings founded on shallow foundations is studied. Two large-scale shake table experiments were conducted at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) to investigate the effectiveness of helical piles in liquefiable grounds. Results from these two experiments highlight a highly improved performance of a shallow foundation supported on helical piles. These largescale shaking table experiments demonstrate the efficiency of using helical piles as a cost-effective countermeasure to reduce the liquefaction-induced building settlement.

The numerical models of nonlinear piles for deep foundations are studied in this paper. The purpose of these is to clarify the mechanical behaviour of deep foundation nonlinear piles subjected to axial and lateral loadings. Based on the site data of p-y curve as well as t-z curve of foundation soils, it is possible to evaluate pile performance under above mentioned loads by means of combined FEM/FDM models. Numerical examples are presented in tall building and offshore jacket for illustrating the technique, it show high efficiency of these models. Some information to be interested by design engineers are given, especially for those who pay very concerns on the interaction behaviours of structure and its pile foundation.

"The aim of this paper is to analyze the creep behavior of a Portuguese soft soil stabilized with binders in one-dimensional conditions, based on oedometer creep tests. The study focuses on the analysis of the effect of the binder content and binder type on the creep behavior of a stabilized soil. The results show that the best binder type for this soil, in terms of creep behavior, is composed of Portland cement and fly ash with a dry weight proportion of 75/25, as this promotes the development of secondary pozzolanic reactions. The results also show the decrease in the secondary compression index with the increment of the binder content, since it promotes an increase in the cementation bonds between soil particles. The general analysis of the results shows a clear dependence on C??and qu, until values of qu of 1500 kPa; after that this relationship is negligible.INTRODUCTIONThe geotechnical structures (such as embankments, dams and buildings) built on organic soils exhibit notable creep deformations, which increase the maintenance and exploitation costs and can even compromise their functioning. To attenuate the creep effects of the soft ground, some improvement techniques are frequently used, such as preloading or reinforcing the soil foundations with vertical rigid inclusions, like concrete piles, stone columns or deep mixing columns (DMCs). However, the installation of DMCs in the soft ground induces (via the arching effect) a transfer of stresses from the soft soil to the DMCs, which causes an increase in the creep settlement on the DMCs (Venda Oliveira et al. 2011).Notwithstanding the fact that the creep behavior of clays has been the object of several studies (Leroueil et al. 1985; Mesri and Castro 1987; among others), the study of the creep behavior of soil-binder admixtures has been practically ignored by the scientific community. The few studies on this theme have revealed that a stabilized soil’s creep behavior is dependent on: the type of binder (Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the binder content (Correia 2011; Bobet et al. 2011; and Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the stress level applied during the creep phase (Venda Oliveira et al. 2013), the organic matter content of the natural soil (Venda Oliveira et al. 2012; 2014), and the curing conditions (humidity, vertical stress applied during curing, and curing time) (Correia 2011; Venda Oliveira et al. 2012).The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the creep behavior of a soil-binder admixture, by examining the results of oedometer creep tests. The study focuses on the analysis of the effect of the binder content and binder type on the creep behavior of a stabilized soil. Additionally, the creep behavior is correlated with the effective vertical yield stress and the unconfined compressive strength (UCS)."

"For a multi-story building project in Kolkata, a pile load testing program was conducted to minimize pile performance uncertainty resulting from variable subsurface conditions and to verify the pile load vs. settlement response. The program consisted of performing five (5) instrumented load tests on augured cast-in-place (ACIP) pre-production test piles. Vibrating-wire strain gages and extensometers were installed in the test piles at strategic locations to enable measurements of the load vs. deformation behavior of the test piles. This paper presents a description of site subsurface conditions, test pile installation, instrumentation setup for a maintained load test (MLT), static compression pile load test results, and pile instrumentation result interpretation. Average mobilized unit shaft resistance values are calculated.2.0 INTRODUCTIONThe project site is located in Kolkata, near river Ganges, and the proposed development plans consist of constructing six (6)25-story (G+25) towers; see Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 below for approximate site location and proposed development layout, respectively. The buildings were designed to be supported on ACIP piles. A field load test program was implemented to verify sub-surface conditions and pile design. The test program consisted of installing Five (5) instrumented test piles numbered LP1A and B through LP6A and B, and performing static compression load tests on these piles. The piles were instrumented with vibrating-wire strain gauges and extensometers, so that the pile shaft resistance distribution along pile length and the pile toe resistance could be interpreted using direct instrumentation measurements."

"In this study the preliminary design of suction pile as the supporting system of the concrete floating structures was performed at the offshore pilot project area in Korea. The suction pile of the floating structures has to satisfy the lateral resistance against external force evaluated from the marine and structure conditions, as well as the penetration ability according to the soil and seepage conditions. In the design, the required penetration depths for lateral resistance were evaluated with different diameters of cylindrical steel suction pile, and the design suction pressures at each penetrating depths were assessed through the comparison of penetration forces and penetration-resistances. Finally, the optimal dimension of suction pile for the pilot project area was proposed.IntroductionInterests in sea spaces have rapidly increased around the world due to limitations in use of lands. Such increase has resulted in construction of numerous marine structures aimed at expanding the use of sea spaces and developing marine resources. South Korea also needs to secure construction technologies for floating infrastructures on its relatively deep seas. Foundations for floating structures consist of anchors and mooring systems rather than driven piles or cast-in-place piles, due to limitations in equipment operation or economic feasibility. Anchors and foundations used on the sea include drag anchors and suction piles, but the suction piles are more widely used for reasons regarding uncertainties of calculation of bearing capacity and construction. Large-diameter suction piles are generally used to utilize fully their penetration ability, which is proportionate to the square of the foundation diameter, and the length-diameter ratio (L/D) does not exceed 6 (Randolph et al., 2005; Andersen et al., 2005). Recently, a design and construction technology using group suction piles consisting of medium-diameter suction piles and concrete pile caps is being developed as an alternative to the conventional large-diameter mono suction piles. In addition, pilot projects involving the group suction piles of mediumdiameter are currently being reviewed for the southwest coast area in Korea. In this study, therefore, preliminary design for installation of medium-diameter mono suction piles as the supporting system of the concrete floating structures was performed, and suction pressures, penetration forces and resistances, and lateral loading capacity with diameters were reviewed."

"Many of the valid international building codes state that the lateral support provided by the soil is sufficient to prevent buckling of fully embedded piles. However, the development of small diameter micropiles and especially the use of high strength steel have evolved to applications including high capacity elements. The ultimate structural load bearing capacity of a pile in a cohesive soil is decided by examining which gives the lowest value, the peak buckling load and the resisting moment provided by the surrounding soil medium or the structural capacity of the pile cross section. In both cases, the initial deflection of the pile is a significant factor when the axial load bearing capacity of the pile is determined. Steel micropiles are joined commonly with mechanical splices. A less rigid mechanical splice is often a weaker hinge that allows the pile to bend and deflect more during installation increasing the initial deflection of a pile. In addition the less rigid splice element decreases the bending capacity of a jointed pile section and the ultimate axial load capacity of the entire pile. A series of FE analysis performed for various pile sizes suggest that the steel pipe piles including separate pile sections and mechanical splicing elements should have the combined bending stiffness of EIshaft = 0,75 × EIpile. This requirement yields to the buckling resistance of at least 96 % of the solid reference pile with the sameinitial eccentricity in similar soil conditions.IntroductionMany of the valid international building codes state that the lateral support provided by the soil is sufficient to prevent buckling of fully embedded piles. The potential buckling of these very slender high capacity piles in soft soils may in many cases be the controlling design factor of the pile, especially with end bearing micropiles.A typical sequence of soil strata in Nordic countries, such as Norway, Finland and Sweden, constitutes of friction soil or dry crust clay on top of soft clay followed by till. This soil stratum often rests on solid bedrock of granite or gneiss. Conditions like these are suitable for slender end bearing piles subjected to buckling and especially steel pipe piles where most of the material is located at the edge of the cross section. Other reasons for using slender steel pipe piles are for example fast installation with minimal waste, efficient manufacturing and relatively well established design and execution procedures. Minimum quality criteria’s regarding splices for steel pipe piles are recommended to be set as national provisions to ensure quality and comparable procurements in foundation business."

The City of Chicago has a world-renowned skyline and is known for its provocative architecture. The subsurface conditions in the city have allowed for construction of these significant structures. The skyline is supported on caissons as they are called in Chicago or drilled shafts in other locations. Despite the significant strides the industry has made in advancing the drilled shaft, the use of other specialty geotechnical construction techniques like micropiles has not been overlooked in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Micropiles have been utilized to underpin famous existing historic structures like Orchestra Hall any many others. Engineers have used 200 to 600 kip micropiles to underpin compromised, inadequate, or damaged caissons. The paper will discuss the use of drilled shafts, micropiles, and ground improvement over the last 30 years in Chicago using a curated collection of case histories. It will also examine advancing the industry beyond its current technical limitations using these techniques. INTRODUCTION 20,000 years ago, glaciers from the Chicago region left behind sheets of glacial clay till underlain by dense, over consolidated glacial till below: limestone bedrock, found about 100 ft below street level. An unusual feature in this profile is the soft Chicago Blue Clay. Chicago has been called the birthplace of the Skyscraper and drilled shaft foundation, both of which came about in the 19th century. After the Great Fire of 1871, tall new structures were built rapidly and designing a successful foundation was trial and error. The first deep driven wood pile and caisson foundations bypassed the problem layer and found solid support on hardpan till or bedrock below (Schock and Risberg 2013). Once the drilled shaft foundation became acceptable to the Chicago engineering and construction community, building heights and complexity grew dramatically. As the city grew, building foundations were being repurposed. There was also the need to underpin structures for additional loads and shallow foundations for adjacent construction. Hand-dug drilled shafts were an option for some of these restricted access and low headroom sites but a new technique, micropiles, would prove to be the future of retrofit and hard to construct foundations. Micropiles were introduced on a limited basis to the United States market in the 1970s and 80s. In the early 1990s, the Chicago market began to latch onto micropiles and their use has grown significantly as a solution to the most complex foundation problems a maturing skyline has to offer.

"The Brickworks Marketplace Project is a significant shopping centre development in inner north west Adelaide constructed by Badge Constructions in 2014 and 2015. The site was a former brickworks with a deep pit containing various extents of uncontrolled fill which was to remain on site, and with a remaining void up to 6 m in depth. The existing uncontrolled fill was improved using the High Energy Impact Compaction system, and the pit backfilled using a quarry crusher byproduct selected by trial and a recycled crushed concrete and bricks and compacted in deep lifts. This approach resulted in significant savings in compaction time, cost and building foundations. The settlements of various parts of the completed works have been monitored since February 2015 and this monitoring has demonstrated small settlements which meet the user’s constraints.INTRODUCTIONThe Torrensville Brickwork Markets project involved the transformation of a former brickworks and clay pit site into a regional 17,000m2 shopping centre, opening in June 2015.The site was a former brickworks with adjoining clay borrow pit. The clay pit had been partially backfilled over many years with ‘uncontrolled’ fill comprising ‘clean’ soil, bricks and kiln dust typically of the following thicknesses:??of the order of up to 7 m to 10 m but locally up to 15 m in the western part of the site??2 m to 5 m in the south-eastern part of the site; and??less than 0.5 m in the north-eastern part of the siteAnecdotal reports suggested compaction of some of the fill may have been undertaken, although this not able to be confirmed nor records obtained.Initially it was proposed to take up the existing uncontrolled fill, sort and recompact or remove to landfill, followed by backfilling in conventional means over 500,000 cubic metres of imported filling to a thickness of up to approximately 6m to backfill the former pit. This work represented a significant cost and was not economically viable.During early negotiations, the contractor proposed an alternative to retain and ground improve the existing filling on site, and to backfill the pit with fill placed and compacted in deep lifts, thereby significantly improving the economics, environmental and community impacts of the proposed works.The developer agreed to the proposal with the following performance criteria:??a settlement of =10 mm after 10 passes by the Impact Compactor (on existing subgrade areas);??a bearing capacity of 250 kPa for high level footings;??a maximum long term differential settlement of 40 mm (measured over 16 m), ie. 1 in 400; and??a minimum modulus of 40MPa."

Spring stiffness of soil and rock at different depth is often required for a pile structural model. If the pile is rested in multiple layers of soil, then it is rather more complex to simulate the soil in a structural model. The spring stiffness will vary based on density of soil strata over the depth. When a pile is socketed in weathered rock followed by a soil layer, a sudden change in subgrade modulus can influence the pile deflection drastically. Determination of soil spring and simulation of the pile in this condition required correct interpretation of subgrade modulus. The conventional approach of pile spring calculation underestimates the spring stiffness by ignoring underlaying stiffer layers. A finite difference method (FDM) of analysis can reasonably estimate the p-y of soil / rock based on subgrade modulus of each layer. However, the transition between the layers can be better simulated as per the deflection pattern of the pile. The lateral deflection of the pile is mainly dependent on the stiffness of soil layer surrounded by the pile. Generally, the lateral influence of a pile varies from 4D to 6D depending on the soil type. Therefore, soil spring stiffness around the pile would require special attention of a Geotechnical engineer to avoid uncertainty in the prediction of pile behaviour. In this paper, emphasis has been given to develop an approach for pile spring stiffness design. A standard software program LPile has been used to develop p-y curves of soil and rock layers at different depths and then converted to soil/ rock springs over the depth. Modulus of Subgrade Reaction as given in IS 2911 (Part2) was also used to correlate the spring value for different type of soil. Obtained analytical results were compared with full scale field trial for lateral deflection of pile. A good agreement between these two approaches has been established. The effect of soil structure interaction in the structural model shall be simulated by assigning an equivalent vertical and horizontal soil spring, which is developed by Winkler’s soil spring approach. A simplified design principle for calculating the pile spring is discussed in this paper. This approach has been extensively used in Mumbai metro elevated line pile design.

This study focuses on quantifying the effects of water infiltration on a full-scale energy pile system’s ability to meet the thermal demand of an HVAC system. Theoretically, an energy pile system should increase its thermal capacity after a rain event due to increased moisture content creating an increase in thermal conductivity of the surrounding soil matrix. The United States Air Force Academy has an energy pile research site consisting of 8 full-scale energy piles located below a shower facility. The local colluvium surrounding the piles allows for relatively high water infiltration during rain events. This study uses an 11kW Precision Geothermal Geocube to apply a thermal load on two single-loop piles. A weather station located south of the structure records atmospheric conditions. Results indicate that moderate rain events can caused up to a 23% increase in the system’s thermal exchange capacity. This change is due to the increase in moisture content near the surface, which penetrates to deeper soil layers with time. The time required for moisture to penetrate to greater depths and then dissipate in the soil matrix, explains why increased system performance is seen for over a week following the passing of a singular rain event. 1 INTRODUCTION With a “future-forward” focus, there is an ever-pressing economic and environmental need to use sustainable sources to meet growing energy needs. HVAC is typically responsible for 34% of the overall energy required by commercial buildings and 48% of the energy required by residential buildings (USEIA, 2009; USEIA, 2012). Energy piles are a low cost, sustainable technology that have been used to offset this energy demand incurred by a building’s space heating and air conditioning requirements. An energy pile consists of heat exchanging elements in a closed loop system integrated into a building foundation and connected to a ground source heat pump (GSHP). It is most common for these heat- exchanging elements to be constructed within a drilled shaft foundation due to both construction practices and geometric considerations. This system operates based on the principle that at a certain depth below ground (typically 4 meters) subterranean temperature remains constant at a value equal to the mean annual air temperature at a given location (Kavanaugh et al., 1997). This allows the soil to function as a heat sink for cooling operations and a heat source for heating operations when exchanged within this zone of relatively constant temperature. For the past 25 years, the implementation of energy pile technology in public, residential, and even large-scale architectural complexes has slowly expanded which has created an increase in research into the topic as a result (Brandl, 2006; Hamada, 2007; Sekine et al., 2007; Gao, 2008; Bourne-Webb, 2009; Stewart and McCartney, 2013; Murphy et al., 2014). When pile construction takes place beneath the groundwater table, soil is under fully saturated conditions, maximizing thermal exchange for a GSHP system. Under unsaturated conditions, however, changing moisture contents change thermal conductivity values in a soil, which affect a GSHP system’s ability to meet a thermal demand. The observational data presented in this paper apply to GSHP systems in unsaturated soil conditions.

"PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe R C Harris Filtration Plant underwent an expansion to install an underground sludge treatment capability consisting of a series of underground tanks within stepped excavations 12m (39 ft) and 10m (33 ft) deep into compact, wet sands over stiff clays and clayey silts.Concerns regarding the original structure influenced designers to set the lateral deflection limit for the proximal front footing at 4mm (1/6 in), (0.03% excavation depth). The design-build team indicated at the time of tender that the movement criteria was unattainable using the tender design. Through extensive Fast Lagrangian Analysis on Continua (FLAC) and a novel construction geometry the design-build team crafted an alternative that produced significant savings over the original concept and met deflection concerns.GEOTECHNIQUEThe hillside site drops 14.5m (47.6 ft) over a distance of 53m (174 ft) between the existing Filter Building on the north and the Services Building on the south. The soils adjacent to the Filter Building consist of 6m (20 ft) of sandy fills, to the footing elevation, over compact sands and layered dense sands and silts to a depth of 10m (33 ft) below existing footing. Beneath the silts lies a 10m (33 ft) thick stiff clayey silt, 2m (6.6 ft) of sandy silt till (containing cobbles and boulders) and an artesian gravelly sand at a total depth of 30m (98.5 ft).The tender information was deemed inadequate to accurately determine soil parameters for a finite element analysis. As a result, the design-build team performed pre-tender Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT), including dynamic analysis. The CPT data indicated stratigraphy consistent with the conventional bore hole exploration (SPT results) however, the CPT data provided consistently superior soil strengths. The CPT data indicated the sands and silts were dense to very dense throughout their full thickness. The clayey silts below the sands were found to have shear strengths in the 100 to 200 kPa (14.5 to 29 psi) range with an Over-Consolidation Ratio (OCR) ratio of 1.5 to 2. The dynamic analysis, while low strain, indicated very competent behavior with Young’s Modulus values in the 200 to 350 MPa (29,000 psi to 51,000 psi) range. The CPT derived shear moduli and OCR values were vital in determining the soil engineering parameters used for the FLAC analyses."

"A world famous Wintersport resort in the Alpine planned to build a parking garage for more than 600 cars and busses situated between a torrent, a district road and the village.A nearly 200 m long building giving place for 6 parking levels and a maintenance level for busses and trucks is situated alongside a hill causing excavation height between 20 and 25 meters, which had to be secured. Due to restrictions – neighbours did not allow the client to drill anchors for retention – we designed a solution combining micropiles, strand anchors, shotcrete and nails as permanent earth retention not exceeding the space of 7 meters provided by the local street. Soil conditions were as challenging - reaching from backfill to moraine with boulders of more than 20 m³ volume – as the construction period of total 12 months for the whole project, which was opened mid of November 2015.The innovative solution outperformed the client´s project from the technical and commercial aspect and helped the contractor to save time and money.The design process with its difficulties as well as erection process is described in the following paper."

"The helical piling system provides solution to many geotechnical related problems due to its quick installation, higher compressive and pullout resistance, no wastage of material, workable in limited areas and reusability. However, its use as a foundation for bridges and high-rise buildings is still limited as compared to other piling methods. In the present study, the performance and load settlement behavior of screw and straight pile is investigated under cyclic compressive load in dense ground conditions. To achieve the set objectives, pile load tests were conducted in a cylindrical steel container. The model ground was compacted with dry sand at relative density of 80%. It is observed from the test results that screw and straight pile resistance reduced when the cyclic load is applied at allowable pile resistance state. The reduction in the ultimate pile capacity is more in straight pile than in screw pile. However, straight pile showed higher ultimate pile capacity than screw pile under similar pile tip diameter. The effect of helix bending deflection on load settlement behavior and ultimate pile capacity increases under cyclic loading.INTRODUCTIONScrew pile is one of the new developments in deep foundation, which is growing tremendously fast because of its quick installation technique, less noisy operation, no wastage of material and involvement of minimum manpower. Screw piles have an edge on straight pipe piles due to its high bearing capacity and uplift resistance. The installation mechanism of screw pile is different from straight pile. Torque and pressure is required to install the screw pile whereas hammering, pressure and vibration is required to install straight pile. As the installation mechanism is different between screw and straight pile, therefore, the ground disturbance that is produced during their installation is also different. The ground disturbance produced during the installation also depends upon the pile tip condition i.e. open or closed ended. Sakr, (2009) stated that the compressive capacity of screw pile in 3 to 5 times higher than driven piles having the same shaft diameter and length. The reason for this increase in pile capacity is due to helix, which is generally 2 to 2.5 times the pile shaft diameter. Larger helices can give higher end bearing capacity but it requires very powerful machinery to install in dense grounds. For instance, if large helix screw pile is installed in a dense ground then helix-bending deflection will start affecting the end bearing capacity (Yttrup and Abramsson, 2003; Malik et al. 2013 and 2015). According to Malik (2015), the equations of thin plate (Young and Budynas, 2002) with uniformly distributed load on the plate can give reasonable estimation of helix deflection due to dense ground conditions."

"For decades, the International Market Place (IMP) has been an icon in the heart of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was famous for Duke Kahanamoku’s restaurant where people flocked to hear Don Ho sing in the ’60s and ’70s. Later, it was a bustling, open-air hub of small vendors who peddled everything from Hawaiian souvenirs and jewelry to food court meals and farmer’s market produce. Small buildings and shacks that housed the businesses were located on a curved tract of land — just one block off the beach — that stretches from Kalakaua Avenue to Kuhio Avenue. The entrance to the complex is dominated by a huge, old (circa 1850) Banyan tree. This tract is owned by the Queen Emma Land Company. Queen Emma was a Hawaiian Queen from the 1800s. Revenue from the land has supported the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for decades.The reimagined IMP is owned by Taubman Centers, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and CoastWood Capital Group of San Francisco, Calif. The IMP will offer a distinctive collection of upscale fashion and lifestyle retailers, including Hawaii’s only Saks Fifth Avenue store, as well as ten sit-down restaurants, including concepts by award-winning chefs Michael Mina and Roy Yamaguchi. The mall features two large open-air courts, the first of which has the huge Banyan tree as its entryway centerpiece. The second open-air court, called Queen’s Court, includes a stage and mature monkeypod trees and a few palm trees. Foundation SelectionAfter a geotechnical exploration that was directed by SME, Plymouth, Mich., and performed by Geolabs, Honolulu, it was discovered that the historical site had hidden and challenging foundation conditions. The subsurface conditions included a very deep but now in-filled ancient river valley containing more than 180 ft (54.9 m) of lagoonal deposits consisting of normally consolidated plastic clayey silts and silty clays with blow counts mainly varying in N-value from 1 to 6. The silt was underlain by several soft coralline layers, some overconsolidated clays and various basalt layers. The static groundwater level on the site was at a depth of about 5 ft (1.5 m), closely matching sea level.Although driven piles had previously been used as the preferred deep foundation support for adjacent structures, this area of town is now fully developed and local noise ordinances preclude their use. Augercast piles were initially considered, but when the general contractor dck/FWF, Pittsburgh, Pa., asked for bids for the augercast piles, several foundation contractors offered alternate systems. The practical installation depth of augercast piles was limited and due to the depth of the in-filled alluvial valley, this system could likely have left soft silt below the tips of the piles over much of the site."
