New technology in video equipment, such as Super Video Tapes, Super Video Camera Recorders equipped with high speed electronic shutters, and VCR's with editing capabilities make it possible to resolve high speed events to still frames with an event elapsed time of 17 milliseconds (ms). This is far from the 2 ms resolution available with a High Speed 16 mm Film Camera such as the LOCAM at its maximum 500 frame persecond speed, but is adequate for many field blast evaluations.

The importance of controlling density of commercial explosives, and the various means to achieve it are described. m e field conditions responsible for density changes during blasting and their effect on blast results are examined. Understanding of the behaviour of density control ingredients such as gas bubbles, glass and plastic microballoons under pressure, is considered essential to predicting explosives performance. Both static and dynamic pressure effects have been studied for typical donor-receptor cartridge configurations. The amplitude and temporal characteristics of dynamic pressures inside receptor explosives have been studied by means of the underwater test, and guidelines developed to limit density changes due to external pressures.

Over the past several years, the Hercules Technical Service Group for the Explosives Department has produced a series of programs for the TI59 programmable calculator dealing with explosive application problems. These programs have been made available to both our internal staff and to the Hercules explosives distributor organization. Several of these programs have found good acceptance and wide usage.

A total of 33 blasts in the pillar recovery program at INCO-Crean Hill has been investigated by means of an extensive set of diagnostic techniques. These included, borehole deviation measurements, stope cavity survey, near-field seismics in both rock and backfill, in-hole VOD and fragment size analysis. The 200 mm diameter VCR blasts employed a variety of explosives types (ANFO, slurry and ANFO/Polystyrene) and deck sizes. The objective of the investigation was to control dilution and backbreak through optimal choice of explosive type and charge weight, without exceeding vibration limits in the adjacent backfill or causing significant degradation in fragmentation.

Aside from the mechanical properties and process of actual rock breakage, rotary drill bit performance is affected by several “post breakage” items: cuttings size, flushing air pressure, flushing air volume, cuttings load, drill hole geometry, etc. We all recognize that more efficient drilling creates bigger cuttings, more air pressure cleans the hole bottom better, more air clears the cuttings from the hole, and a better hole geometry allows cuttings to escape with a minimum of “regrind”.

The South African gold mining industry presently uses four different types of explosives in stope blasting. There is general agreement that the type of explosive has considerable effect on Important blasting results such as the degree of rock fragmentation, the intensity of damage to surrounding rock, and the success of break-out at the toe of the hole.

The purpose of seismic control of blasting is to indicate the vibration magnitude or to eliminate the occurrence of vibration damage caused by blasting. At the Mining Research Institute in Hungary, a new method has been developed to determine the method of delay. Near the blasting site (within 100-200 meters), the peak value of the particle velocity is determined by calculation and also by measurement. In the calculations, the time error of the electric detonators is taken into consideration. During the test program, the results of the experimental blasts and the calculated data have shown good correlation. The method of calculation helps the operator eliminate vibration damage, while the greatest quantity of charge can be detonated.

Nearly all of the South African gold mining industry still uses fuse and igniter-cord initiation systems. Over the past 30 years numerous attempts at developing new initiation systems have not yielded a viable alternative. New initiation systems for narrow stopes are currently being developed by various concerns and the likelihood of these efforts producing feasible alternatives is greatly improved due to the recent advances in electronics technology. The greatest potential benefit of alternative initiation systems is increased production rates through improvements in accuracy and reliability of firing over that of fuse/igniter-cord. Another important feature is the capability of millisecond delay firing as this can lead to reduced stope cleaning times by way of enhanced rock throw and improved fragmentation characteristics.

This paper changes the section of copper of copper to aluminum adapter bar into aluminum plate covered one face or double face with copper coat, and changes the conductor material of knife switch, fuse box, plug and socket into steel plate covered one face or double face with copper plate, and manufactures the composite (two layers or three layers) metal plates by means of explosion welding with the plates installed horizontally. Introduced in this paper are the blasting designing technique, manufacturing process and the electrical performances of the explosion bonded products. Besides, this paper presents the designing and manufacturing technique of cumulative charges and their time detonating units for cutting off the retired nuclear submarine pipes. Experiments on cutting off the stainless steel pipes by cumulative flow and on the time detonation are made. When CIL presented their new theory of the Breakage Process and Delay Blasting at the 74th Annual Meeting of the CIM in 1972(1), there was hardly any open pit operation in Canada that was using longer than 25 msec. delays. To the contrary, 10 and 15 msec. surface relays were common, which in our opinion were no delays at all for open pit blasting.

Jointing of steel rods in reinforced concrete structures needs careful consideration as it renders the structure weak at the joint. The jointing is usually done at sections of structural members, where the bending moment and shear force are least. Jointing is done either by overlapping the rods or welding or by mechanical splicing. A novel method of jointing them is by inserting the two rods in a steel sleeve and cladding it on to the rods by subjecting the sleeve to explosive energy. A rod jointed in this fashion is tested for direct tension and bending when used in a reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that it is an effective method. The advantage is that a number of joints can be made in a single operation.

The Colowyo mine is a unique surface coal mining operation because it is a multiple seam pit. Using a combination of a shovel-truck and dragline operation, Colowyo mines 8 seams of coal to a depth of 400 ft. Over the past 3 years a number of operational changes have occurred, one of which is the implementation of blast casting. Through this implementation Colowyo has been able to eliminate over one million cubic yards a year, which would have had to be removed by the shovel-truck operation. This has also brought about a significant decrease in the stripping cost per ton within the dragline operation.

Current magazine regulations are designed to avoid injury or property damage caused by accidental detonation as well as to store explosives securely. The primary emphasis appears to be the avoidance of unintended detonation or in the event such detonation occurs, the avoidance of damage to surrounding property. Adherence to these regulations largely serves the purpose intended but has caused difficulty in magazine sitting in built up areas. To the extent that magazine siting is too heavily restricted, other more significant dangers such as storage of explosives in more dangerous and less secure places may be encouraged. In summary, the regulations have served rural magazine locations well but may need further study for urban settings.

Vibration control is affected by many factors which are difficult to isolate and evaluate. Occasionally a circumstance occurs in which one factor appears to predominate and its effects can be evaluated. Changing rock characteristic or lithologic variation is one of these factors or parameters. In a recent seismic monitoring project, lithologic variation in the form of hard lenses occurring suddenly and randomly in the rock to be excavated caused sudden and large increases in vibration level. Data are presented to illustrate these effects, and procedures used to control these effects are described.

A study was performed to evaluate the predictability of airblast overpressures induces by production mine blasting. Thirty-seven production blasts were monitored using 3 blasting seismographs giving over 100 blast overpressure records. Blasts were monitored at 5 coal highwall operations and at a limestone quarry, all in the midwest. Blasts consisting of small surface charges were monitored to permit an assessment of prediction methods under controlled conditions, as well as to observe actual delay intervals and their influence on the overpressure.

Simple bulk energy rating of explosives obscures the realities of how these deliver their energy, and diverts attention from the key question of controlling blasting results. Explosive performance is directly related to the pressure pulse impacting on the blasthole wall. This is helpfully visualised by comparing the adiabatic expansion plots for explosives of interest on the right scales and axes. The simple comparison of a pure emulsion with pure ANFO illustrates the practical significance of the intrinsic behaviour of these opposed formulations, showing that the emulsion can be expected to work more by softening rock, while ANFO will tend more to crack it. The explanation for these differences lies in the high shock, low sustained pressure of the former relative to the latter. The technique is readily applied, if a good detonation code is available and able to swap data into a spreadsheet. Any differences between codes will emerge most strongly in comparing the gamma plots.

Innovative concepts in drilling and blast design have been used to remove deteriorated concrete and have enabled contractors to reduce costs and time on St. Lawrence Seaway rehabilitation projects. Time is of the essence on these contracts since the Seaway system is only available for this work during the winter freeze up. Unique electrical sequential initiation systems and specially modified drilling equipment have been used to accurately remove a narrow slice from the 83 foot high lock walls. These new methods successfully reduced demolition time, minimized overbreak and adhered to strict vibration limits.

Oilsands Group, Mining Operation in Northern Alberta, Canada, has beenblasting to loosen the oilsands to increase production and decrease maintenance of the hugebucketwheel excavators for over twenty years. In 1991 an area of the mine wasencountered which had a working face in excess of 130 feet. In order to maintain theproduction objective, the blasting department took on the task of providing as much of ablasted face to work with as possible. In doing this Suncor has exceeded several knownrecords in production blasting."

The effect on an explosive column of the sharp transient stress waves generated during the earlier detonation of adjacent blastholes is of paramount importance to explosives users. Some explosives will sympathetically detonate under these stresses. Others may suffer a transient desensitization, arising from a temporary increase in the density of an explosive beyond certain limits and persisting until the explosive mass relaxes back to the original density. Some explosives are so adversely affected by these stresses that the product suffers immediate and permanent loss of sensitivity. These effects can be clearly seen while blasting in tough conditions such as burn cuts or wedge cuts and in materials, such as coals, that propagate shock waves well.
