The objective of blasting is twofold: the permanent stabilization of an area by the collapse of underground workings to prevent any future subsidence, and the use of blasting to close existing sinkholes.

A discrete element computer program, DMC (Distinct Motion Code) was developed to simulate blast-induced rock motion. To simplify the complex task of entering material and explosive design parameters as well as bench configuration, a full-featured graphical interface has been developed. DMC is currently executed on both Sun SPARCstation 2 and Sun SPARCstation 10 platforms and routinely used to model bench and crater blasting problems.

The advent of more powerful explosives, increased bench heights, and larger diameter blastholes has necessitated the use of presplitting techniques in sub-bituminous coal mines. The combination of these factors has increased the energy concentration during blasting, producing severe overbreak problems in the final pit walls. Presplitting with large diameter blastholes has proven to be the most viable method of reducing back break in sub-bituminous coal mines.

The velocity with which the burden moves after blasting is of concern for safety and economic reasons. Models developed for motion velocity by various researchers were reviewed and likely model parameters were used to develop statistically significant models. Regression analysis and residual analysis were used to determine the model coefficients and the accuracy of the models.

The goal was to reduce mining costs by expanding blast hole patterns while maintaining or improving dig-ability of the shot material. There are four large limestone quarries, located nearby Cairo metropolitan. Drilling and blasting operations are used to extract limestone for the cement industries. In these quarries, the blast vibration should be kept below a certain limit. One of these quarries is Tourah Portland Cement Company (TPCC) limestone quarry which, lies near important and historical large caves, within Tourah Mountain. Therefore, control of blast vibration level becomes very critical.

It is well known that a compressed stress wave reflects at the free face, it propagates to the backward as a tensile stress wave, and cracks grow when the tensile stress becomes the dynamic tensile strength.
