The safety of mine workers depends on the proper installation of roof supports to prevent the ground from collapsing into the working areas of an underground mine. As new support systems are developed, they need to be properly evaluated to make sure that they are capable of providing adequate roof support before they are first used in a mine. In addition to making certain that the supports meet basic safety criteria, the limitations of the support need to be fully defined in order to avoid improper application of a particular support design. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) operates a world-class facility called the Safety Structures Testing Laboratory. This laboratory contains a unique load frame, the Mine Roof Simulator, which is capable of simulating the ground behavior in underground mines for conducting full-scale evaluations of roof support systems. Safety performance testing protocols using the unique Mine Roof Simulator have been developed for both standing roof support systems and longwall shield supports. The purpose of this paper is to describe these test procedures. The protocol for standing roof supports incorporates seven test series:( 1) uniform loading baseline tests, (2) height evaluations, (3) asymmetric loading, (4) biaxial loading, (5) load rate studies, (6) active loading determination, and (7) static loading evaluations. For longwall shields, a four-series test program that accurately simulates in-service conditions on a longwall face is proposed. This test program consists of (1) transfer of horizontal load to the caving shield-lemniscate assembly (zero-friction test),(2) point loading of shield joints due to lateral movement or rotation of the canopy, (3) evaluation of leg socketand leg cylinder integrity, and (4) face-to-waste racking of the shield. In addition, an evaluation of the shield’s hydraulic components will be conducted prior to the performance testing. These protocols will provide state-of-the-art safety performance evaluations of emerging support technologies, as well as a means to assess the safety of both new and aging longwall shields. Hence, this effort will enhance the safety of mine workers by ensuring that critical support elements are properly designed and that aging supports are retired before their support capability is jeopardized.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests using a tracer-gas technique to measure the effectiveness of the jet fan, which is often employed in mines to ventilate dead headings. Results of these tests show that jet fans can (1) ventilate dead headings beyond the maximum penetration distance indicated by smoke-tube detection of air movement, and (2) redistribute available fresh air through larger working areas. However, if the fresh air base is insufficient, the fan will merely recirculate the contaminated air and disperse it over a larger volume.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. Untreated timber in a mine or elsewhere may fail prematurely because it may "rot out before it wears out." If such timber is treated with a satisfactory preservative, decay will be retarded for many years, and it's serviceable life will beg prolonged to several times that usually obtained from untreated timber.4/ Treated timber has many advantages, and although it has been used extensively by railroads and other large consumers of structural timber, the relatively small use in mines seems strange indeed. Timber does not decay if it is kept dry, cool, and well-ventilated or if it is kept constantly wet or sumberged in water. At a mine in Canada the temperature in the upper levels was only 44° F., and the timber did not decay. As operations deepened, however, warmer ground was opened, and, with high humidity, conditions favored timber decay. The life of untreated timber may be only 2 to 3 years under such conditions.

This report deals with the creation of an efficient method to determine if command, control, communication and monitoring (3cm) equipment in coal, metal and non-metal mines is susceptible to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from the Medium Frequency (MF) radio communications system. A qualitative and quantitative RFT test plan was developed for in-mine and laboratory evaluation of the equipment. The laboratory testing was accomplished using the TEM Test Chamber. Detailed information on the Test Plan and the TEM Test Chamber is included. During in-mine testing of the MF System some underground equipment malfunctioned when the transmitter's radiating antenna was in close proximity. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing was done on three levels; Component (circuit or box), subsystems and system. Nine tables are included which show the results of testing various equipment for RFI.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study to identify the causes of self-heating events beneath the floor of a deep underground coal mine. Mine samples from both heated and unheated areas were examined by various techniques, including visual, microscopic, thermal, chemical, and instrumental tests. The combined results led to the conclusion that pyrite (FeS2) oxidation was the prime cause of the beatings. However, adiabatic oven tests of selected samples did not indicate the effect of the pyrite on the self-heating process, probably because of the experimental conditions. A fast, simple procedure to assess the concentration of pyrite in the mine samples was developed, utilizing the reactivity of the sample with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

The Bureau of Mines studied the precipitation of copper from dilute acidic sulfate solutions using shredded automobile scrap in a rotary drum. The tests established that the scrap in the rotary drum precipitated copper faster and more completely than shredded, detinned, tinplate scrap in a launder, with comparable iron consumption. Although power is required to rotate the drum, the faster precipitation and continuous recovery of cement copper are advantages of the tumbler method. Cost evaluation indicates that the rotary drum method, which uses relatively low-cost and readily available shredded automobile scrap, is competitive with the launder method, which uses relatively high-cost shredded tinplate scrap or detinned shredded cans.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a brief summary of the explosion trends in United States coal mines for the past 160 years. These trends show that in spite of the overall improvements in mine safety, the number of fatalities from ignitions of methane has actually increased in recent years. Suggestions are made of procedures that can be utilized to reverse this trend.

Accelerometers of various types, velocity gages, and a displacement meter are shown to give reliable date when measuring seismic pulses generated in rock by the detonation of explosive charges. Displacement and velocity records are differentiated and shown to compare with velocity and acceleration records. Velocity and acceleration records are integrated and shown to compare with displacement and velocity records, respectively. The experimental data are shown to satisfy the scaling laws developed by dimensional analysis. Propagation laws are developed for peak amplitudes of the first pulse of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. These propagation laws are shown to be independent of the gage used to obtain the data. As a result, the usefulness of the various gage types can be extended. For example, accelerometers, because of their high frequency and amplitude limits, can be employed near the shot to measure acceleration and/or velocity (by integration), Velocity gages, because of their higher sensitivity, can be employed at relatively larger distances from the shot to measure velocity and displacement or acceleration (by integration or differentiation).

While less than 1% of reported accidents are associated with slope stability problems, slope failures were responsible for about 15% of all U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2001. Small rockfalls, which may involve hand-sized rocks weighing only a few kilograms, can cause fatal injuries to workers away from the protection of large machinery. Massive highwall failures containing a million cubic meters of material or more can be fatal even for heavy equipment operators. As part of an ongoing study at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, several remote-sensing technologies are being evaluated as tools to monitor slopes for hazards and to assess slope stability. Field tests of a hyper spectral imager were conducted to assess its value for improving geologic maps of potentially unstable alteration zones on mine slopes. An interferometric radar device capable of detecting very small displacements on slopes awaits final assembly and field testing. Computerized monitoring methods using images from digital and video cameras are being assessed for application to mine slope surveillance. These and other techniques will eventually provide new tools to augment current methods for monitoring ground control hazards in mines.

The productive capacity of natural gasoline and cycling plants in the United States or. January 1, 1954, was 926 thousand barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 114 thousand barrels per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 164 thousand barrels per day. The total number of plants increased from 521 on January 1, 1952, to 535 on January 1, 1954. The number of operating plants increased from 506 to 521. The major increases in capacity took place in Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico, with the absorption-type plant continuing to account for most of the new construction. In 1954, however, 6 plants reported using a refrigeration process whereas only 1 plant reported this in 1952. The number of operating compression-type plants continued to decline and combination plants showed a decline this year because a number of these plants were reclassified as absorption-type.

This report describes a Bureau of Mines technical feasibility study of simultaneous reduction and induration of pelletized iron ore to make a product with superior qualities as blast-furnace feed. Highly reduced, physically competent pellets can be made from magnetite and specularite concentrates that contain small additions of bentonite as binder. In batch tests, pellets were dried, surrounded with solid fuel in crucibles, and heated to the reducing temperature. Total iron content of the best products was higher than 80 percent and crushing strength of 1/2-inch metallized pellets ranged up to 600 pounds or more. Comparative tests of several commercial oxide pellets showed a wide range in crushing strengths, but most values were less than 350 pounds. Continuous tests in a rotary kiln resulted in the same degree of reduction, but the pellets had lower crushing strengths because of the limitations in the maximum operating temperature of the small kiln.

The Bureau of Mines 8-liter flammability system was used to study the effectiveness of a variety of powdered inhibitors in preventing the propagation of explosions of coal dust or methane in air. Over 35 different chemical additives were evaluated against Pittsburgh seam pulverized coal. The least effective inhibitors were the carbonates, which required mass additions in the range of two to three parts inhibitor to one part of coal dust in order to prevent propagation. The most effective inhibitors were the derivatives of ammonium phosphate, which were effective quenching agents at additions of only one part inhibitor to four parts of coal dust. Alkali halide powders were of intermediate effectiveness. These laboratory-scale results are in good agreement with full-scale mine experiments in all cases where detailed comparisons have been made. Data were also obtained for the effectiveness of several of the same powdered inhibitors against methane-air explosions. Their relative order of effectiveness and the concentration ranges required for quenching the gas explosion are comparable to those measured for coal dust explosions. Data are also presented for the effectiveness of N2 and CF3Br addition. Some preliminary data are also presented for powder addition to methane burner flames. Those data are compared with other burner data and evaluated in terms of their relevance to explosion tests.

Natural gas was Bangladesh's only significant exploited mineral. A few other minerals or mineral-based commodities were produced for local consumption. The most valuable were nitrogen fertilizer, salt, cement, and clay for brick.2 The most important mineral industry development of 1987 was the start of modest production of crude oil, the first discovered and produced in the country. PRODUCTION AND TIADE Production of natural gas from the nation's huge reserves continued to increase but was limited by the lack of residential and industrial demand. Gas reserves of 7 trillion to 16 trillion cubic feet were sufficient for far more production than the country could efficiently utilize for many years. The country's consumption-to-reserves ratio was one of the lowest of the developing nations. Mineral exports have been insignificant, comprising a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogenous fertilizer exports could become important when planned new capacity comes on-stream. Mineral imports were dominated by crude petroleum.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. On January 1, 1960 there were 310 petroleum refineries in the United States, with a crude-oil capacity of 9,901,424 barrels daily, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decrease of three in the number of refineries and an increase of 81,578, barrels per day in crude-oil throughput capacity. Continuing the trend to fewer units with greater individual throughput, the capacity of the average refinery in the United states increased during 1959 from 31,373 barrels per day to 31,740 barrels per day. Compared with the previous year, total crude-oil capacity of refineries on January 1, 1960 was lower in the Appalachian No. 1, Other Rocky Mountain, and Texas Gulf refinery districts. All other districts showed slight increases in capacity. At the beginning of 1960 the industry had under construction facilities that would increase the crude-oil capacity in the United States by 70,947 barrels per day. This was the smallest capacity increase under construction at the beginning of the year since 19460 Included in this construction of additional capacity were two new refineries, one in Michigan and another in Hawaii. In addition, the industry was constructing facilities to replace 50,250 barrels per day of existing crude-oil capacity.

This publication comprises tables listing friction loss for a flexible, spiral-reinforced circular ventilation tubing system. The tables were constructed with the following parameters: a friction factor of 62 X 10-10, 10-foot sections of tubing ranging in total length from 100 to 550 feet, air quantities ranging from 1,000 to 15,000 cfm, and one to four 90° bends in the tubing. The aim of this publication is to improve ventilation tubing analysis and to provide a method of proper fan selection.

The work described in this report, part of the Bureau of Mines long-range program to develop methods of utilizing submarginal domestic sources of aluminum, was undertaken to investigate the effects of iron in the lime soda sinter process, The approximate Fe2O3 content in a sinter for maximum alumina and soda recovery was 8 to 9 percent. Fe2O3 appears to inhibit gelation, and 15.5 percent Fe2O3 produces effects similar to those produced by 1 percent sucrose. In the lime soda sinter process, aluminum silicates are sintered with limestone and soda ash to yield dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate. The sodium aluminate is extracted by leaching in caustic solution. The solution is purified by heating in an autoclave with lime to remove silica, and alumina trihydrate is precipitated with carbon dioxide. The reactions involved in sintering and leaching are complex. A number of studies by the Bureau of Mines4-9 and others1 indicate that the iron content of sinters influenced the recovery of alumina and soda and the gelation characteristics.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot -deep vertical borehole. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the corresponding values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.
