The Bureau of Mines has been promoting health and safety in mining since its establishment in 1910. One area of research covers methane control in coalbeds; this report describes a multipurpose borehole used for both degasification and the production of commercial-quality gas. The multipurpose borehole was drilled into a barrier pillar, and seven horizontal degasification holes and one pressure point hole were drilled radially out from its perimeter. On January 28, 1974, after 505 days of degasification, a compressor was installed to the exhaust stack of the multipurpose borehole (2), and pipeline--quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of February 4, 1975, over 171 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company. The in situ pressure at a depth of 200 feet into the coalbed and the average gas flow and water flow from the degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psig, 1,200,000 cfd, and 6.8 gpm, respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psig. Five hundred days later, the corresponding values were 620,000 cfd, 0.15 gpm, and 10.5 psig. Daily flows have been as high as 800,000 cfd, and as low as 360,000 cfd, during the last 500 days. On February 4, 1975, after 882 days of degasification, 576 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the Pittsburgh coalbed; apparently a much larger area of virgin coal is being degasified than is defined by the holes. This study indicates that horizontal boreholes drilled into a coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove gas from the Pittsburgh coalbed.

This report presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that were circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its annual survey for 1958. Only plants that processed fuels of mineral origin were included; specifically, plants that manufactured briquets from charcoal were excluded. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured by mixing fine-sized fuels with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Both are used mainly for residential heating in the United States, but they differ considerably in appearance and physical characteristics. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped forms, 2 to 4 inches in length, weighing from 2 to 4 ounces. Pack-aged fuel consists of 3-to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. Briquets are made with a water-insoluble binder and are designed for rough handling and outdoor storage, whereas packaged fuel generally is made with a water-soluble binder and must be stored indoors to prevent deterioration. Briquet plants are relatively large and usually are at mines or in dock areas where large quantities of fine-sized fuels accumulate. Packaged-fuel plants are smaller and are used chiefly by retail dealers to convert locally available coal and coke fines into a product that can be burned efficiently in residential beating equipment.

The sensitivity of radiochemical techniques makes possible the study of the initial-stage sulfuric acid leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite and other copper sulfide minerals. This Bureau of Mines study of the initial leaching of chalcopyrite used techniques to evaluate the molecular and electrochemical processes. High-grade Transvaal chalcopyrite was neutron-irradiated in a TRIGA reactor4 to produce radioisotopes copper-64, iron-59, and sulfur-35. Dissolution rates were measured in the time interval zero to 60 minutes, during which time significant anomalies were observed. First was an initial period of rapid dissolution lasting a few minutes; second, an arrest or ?plateau? region usually lasting from 6 to 10 minutes; third, a second period of dissolution of lesser rate than the first. The effects of solution variables such as pH, oxygen partial pressure, and ferric ion concentration at different temperatures were measured.

A Bureau of Mines geologic study of Pennsylvanian and Permian coalbeds in southwestern Pennsylvania was undertaken to determine the effects of coalbed geology and petrology on in situ coalbed gas contents. Data were obtained from 18 coreholes from parts of four 7.5 ' quadrangles in southwestern Washington and northwestern Greene Counties, and from a single corehole in Westmoreland County. A total of 88 samples from 24 coalbeds were collected for direct-method testing to determine gas content. The samples were also analyzed for petrographic composition, chemical composition, and vitrinite reflectance values. Corehole information was used to generate isopach maps and geologic cross sections useful in data interpretation. Results of the investigation show that coalbed gas content is related to vitrinite reflectance, but not to petrographic composition. Gas contents are also influenced by other geologic factors such as roof rock lithology and competency, and location with respect to local fold structure.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and successfully tested a hangup clearance module for use in clearing hangups in underground mine chutes and ore passes. The Bureau's tests showed that the hangup clearance module can be effectively used to clear mine hangups. Furthermore, it is believed that clearance using this module is quicker, safer, and more efficient than the method currently used. The hangup clearance module uses a ballistic disk explosive charge that can clear hangups located as far as 50 feet (15.2 m) from the position where the charge is detonated. Mine personnel can therefore set up the module and the charge it contains without being exposed to dangerous areas. This report describes the principles of operation of the module, provides data and drawings for its construction, and gives instructions for its setup and use. The report also summarizes the development of the module, briefly discusses preliminary and underground tests, and lists the current and potential applications of the hangup clearance module to underground mining.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel Co.'s Sunnyside No.1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pet.

This paper describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation of large-scale coal dust explosions in an experimental mine using a high speed electro pneumatic mechanism for the rapid grab-sampling of gases and dusts. This technique enables the monitoring of pyrolysis and charring in fuel dust particles, and the collection of gaseous combustion products, in both large and small-scale explosions. Data obtained from full-scale dust explosion tests at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Test facility show the following: Rapid sampling appears to "freeze" the burned gas compositions at the flame temperature values. Gas samples taken entirely in the flame zone consist of pyrolysis and combustion products with very low residual oxygen. The particles collected in the flame zone show signs of extensive pyrolysis and charring. Measurements of gas concentrations and particle flame temperatures suggest that char burning may have occurred in the flame zone.

Coalbed gas content measurements are commonly used in mine safety as well as coalbed methane resource assessment and recovery applications. Gas content determination techniques generally fall into two categories: (1) direct methods which actually measure the volume of gas released from a coal sample sealed into a desorption canister and (2) indirect methods based on empirical correlations, or laboratory derived sorption isotherm gas storage capacity data. Direct gas content determination techniques may be further. subdivided into quick-crushing and extended desorption methods. The quick-crushing methods are primarily used in mine safety applications outside the United States, but have also been used for resource recovery applications. Quick-crushing methods rely on crushing the coal sample soon after collection to release all the desorbable gas, thus significantly shortening the amount of time required for desorption measurements. However, some data useful for resource recovery applications are lost. Extended desorption techniques are most commonly used for resource assessment and recovery applications where information on desorption rates is useful for reservoir modeling, and for fundamental coalbed methane research. Extended desorption methods allow the gases in the coal sample to desorb under controlled laboratory conditions until a defined low desorption rate cutoff point is reached. The sample may then be crushed to measure the amount of gas remaining within the sample. Direct method techniques for gas content measurement are the focus of this paper.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has conducted semi-annual surveys to determine the changes in motor gasoline being sold in the United States. It was pointed out in the previous survey that there was an apparent tendency toward greater uniformity in the character of gasoline marketed in the United States. This practically uniform tendency which continued from April, 1917 to January, 1923, has been interrupted in the, present survey, as shown by an examination of the column marked "Difference," as given in Table 1. The figures in this table were obtained by averaging the end points of the least volatile and most volatile samples of gasoline. For example, of 850 samples analyzed in 1919, the 10% ,(85 samples) having the highest end points and the 10% having the lowest end points mere grouped, and the end points of each group averaged. These averages are represented in the table as the "Maximum 10%" and the ?Minimum 10%? respectively. The same process was used on the other surveys.

"INTRODUCTION The act of Congress establishing the Bureau of Mines in 1910 delegated to the Bureau, as one of its principal duties and functions, the study of health and safety in the mineral industries with a view to devising and putting into operation means of conserving the health and safety of persons employed in the industries. One of the first health and safety activities of the Bureau of Mines was therefore organization of a trained force to promote instruction in first aid in the mineral industries. First-aid training has been an important activity of the Bureau of Mines since its establishment. The standard first-aid course requires a minimum of 15 hours of instruction and practice work. A person completing the initial training course is issued an engraved certificate and pocket card certificate; thereafter, only a pocket card certificate is issued for additional training.From 1910 to 1926 first aid was taught by trained Bureau of Mines employees; consequently, only a comparatively few persons were trained. In 1926, however, cooperative first-aid training was initiated, which provided the means to train the entire personnel of mines or plants within a short time in a single campaign. Many mines and plants have taken advantage of the cooperative plan, whereby keymen in a mine or plant, in addition to the initial training received, are given intensive training in first aid by a Bureau of Mines instructor. Those men who show an aptitude for teaching are selected as tentative provisional first-aid instructors. In order to qualify as a provisional instructor, a tentative instructor must, under the supervision of a Bureau of Mines instructor, train a class of at least six persons employed in the minerals industries in the standard Bureau of Mines course in first aid. After it has been determined that the class has been trained properly, a provisional first-aid instructor's pocket card certificate is issued to the class instructor. The first-aid instructor can renew his pocket card certificate each year by training or retraining at least six persons connected with the mineral industries to satisfactorily pass an examination given by a Bureau of Mines representative. After five yearly renewals of a provisional instructor's pocket card certificate, an engraved, permanent instructor's certificate and a permanent instructor's pocket card certificate are issued to the instructor."

"INTRODUCTION In city smoke-abatement work it is customary to require approval of the sizing of fuel-burning equipment. This is to insure that, with reasonable attention, the equipment can be operated essentially smokelessly, having such features as ample furnace volume and air supply. To answer the many inquiries that come to the Bureau of Mines as to what dimensions are acceptable and standard, the requirements of a number of smoke-abatement ordinances have been tabulated.CONCLUSIONSStudy of these tabulations shows that even after many years of fuel-burning practice and experience there is no common standard. Variations in the requirements for the same type of equipment under the same conditions of operation are great. This causes considerable difference in installation costs. Over-all costs being affected, the competitive positions of different types of fuel-burning equipment are also affected. It is apparent that there is a lack of information as to proper dimensions that is commonly accepted as authoritative.DISCUSSIONTable 1 gives the minimum furnace-setting heights required by various cities for mechanical underfeed stokers installed under H.R.T. boilers. Figure 1 shows a typical installation. The dimension given for each case is the distance from the dead plate of the stoker to bottom of boiler shell, unless otherwise noted. As shown in the table, different cities use different size-classification systems; it is not possible to make complete, exact, direct comparisons. Table la gives a comparison for various cities, showing the approximate percentage difference in H.R.T. furnace-setting heights required from those recommended by the Stoker Manufacturers' Association arbitrarily chosen to serve as a basis of comparison. The percentages are approxi¬mate because they were calculated as if all heights as given were measured from the dead plate of the stoker. In two cases a lower height is permitted, in a number of cases the height may be the same, and in a number of cases the height must be greater. The percentage increase goes to 100 in one case. Lack of uniformity is quite evident."

Knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing formations is important in petroleum-reservoir evaluation work. Electric logging provides a means for making reliable estimates of water content if resistivity-saturation relationships representative of the formations are available. Relationships can be determined in the laboratory by a number of methods. This report describes and presents results of a laboratory investigation conducted at the Bureau of Mines Appalachian Experiment Station, Morgantown, W. Va. (1) to evaluate an evaporation method of attaining water saturations in sandstone samples when determining resistivity-saturation relationships and (2) to compare saturation exponents derived from data obtained, using different methods of achieving water saturations. A series of tests was conducted to determine the effect of evaporation on salinity distribution within the core specimen. Results of these tests show that a zone of high salinity was set up at the surface of a sample during evaporation and that long periods were required for the sample to reach resistance equilibrium after evaporation had ceased. Equilibrium time ranged from several minutes to several days, depending on the sample size and the technique used. The high-salinity zone was removed from the sample by using auxiliary porous material in capillary contact with the sample surface during evaporation. Salinity determinations and resistance measurements indicate that, at saturations greater than the minimum interstitial values, the mechanism of flow during evaporation was one of moisture migration mainly as a liquid from the interior of the test specimens to their exterior surfaces. The concentration of the contained brine remained essentially unchanged, except for a narrow zone near the evaporating surfaces.

"INTRODUCTION The greatly diversified and increased uses of beryllium and its con& pounds in recent years have focused attention on the health hazards incident thereto. The Bureau of Mines has a fundamental interest in safety and the elimination or reduction of health hazards in the mineral and allied industries, and it recognizes that serious hazards are inherent in the production and use of beryllium and its compounds. This circular presents a review of the literature pertaining to such health hazards but does not describe original research by Bureau personnel. Most of the bibliography has boon either quoted in part or abstracted in an effort to present information in a comprehensive and readable form.In reviewing the literature, differences of opinions wore recognized in the writings of the respective authors, but no attempt was made to evaluate such differences. This presentation was devoted strictly to reporting without editorial comment.SUMMARYAlthough beryllium was known to industry for about 150 years, its toxicity did not present any serious problems in the United States until the advent of World War II, when the increased use of this element and its compounds brought to light several toxicologic reactions occurring primarily in the lungs and skin of workers handling it. The pulmonary effects, characterized as acute pnoumonitis and chronic pulmonary granulomatosis in beryllium workers, are far more serious than the dermatological manifestations.The addition of beryllium to the list of toxic industrial metals has boon so recent that there is still some confusion in the clinical picture. Data on magnitudes of exposure likely to be responsible for the production of disease are not yet adequate. There appears to be no relation between the severity of exposure and the development of cases some of those having had severe exposure have not developed a reaction, whereas those having a slight exposure in some instances have developed a response."

Miners at noncoal surface mining operations are often exposed to high levels of respirable dust. In an effort to lower the respirable dust exposure of these surface miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research to address this problem in a practical and economically viable manner. One successful effort deals with lowering the dust exposure of equipment operators in enclosed cabs. Many types of surface mining equipment utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators from dust exposure. Normally when the equipment is new, the cabs are fairly airtight. These tightly sealed cabs, combined with good filtration systems, generally provide the operator with good dust protection. However, most mining equipment is older, and as aging occurs, many components of the enclosure deteriorate. The structural integrity of the cab diminishes and the effectiveness of the air filtration system fails. NIOSH has been successfully researching costs-effective methods to improve both filtration effectiveness and cab integrity of these older cabs in order to provide a healthier work environment for equipment operators. Dust sampling records indicate that drill operators and helpers have the highest dust exposure of all workers at surface mining operations. Since much of the overburden contains a high percentage of silica, the health hazard associated with this dust can be even more serious. NIOSH research is addressing techniques to lower respirable dust levels at surface drilling operations. INTRODUCTION NIOSH's mission is to assure a safe and healthy work environment for the working men and women of this nation. The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was a laboratory-scale evaluation of the sodium sulfate refining process for removing copper from molten ferrous scrap. Maximum copper removal is achieved in carbon-saturated melts at 1,300° C. Low carbon concentrations and higher temperatures result in a less efficient copper removal and an increased sulfur concentration in the iron. Sodium sulfate refining significantly lowers the concentration of aluminum, manganese, and silicon; however, the copper removal efficiency is adversely affected by the presence of manganese and silicon. Compared with other reagents tested, sodium sulfide-forming slags were found to be the most suitable for both copper removal and sulfur control. The sulfur content of the refined iron was higher in tests conducted in acid-type refractory crucibles. Earlier studies showed that tin, a significant metallurgical impurity, is not removed by the sulfate process. During the present investigation, results showed that chlorination, using organic solid sources of chlorine, reduced the tin concentration to acceptable levels in molten iron.

In the U.S. coal mining industry, a large cohort of miners is at or nearing retirement age. As these miners retire, there will be a need to hire and train thousands of new and most likely younger workers. Moreover, a large portion of safety trainers will also require replacement due to retirement. In a speech before the U.S. House of Representatives (2004), Bruce Watzman, Vice President for Safety, Health and Human Resources for the National Mining Association said, “[W]e will need to replace a major portion, approximately 50%, of the underground coal mining workforce within the next 5–7 years.” The large influx of new mine workers, along with the deficit in safety trainers, creates the challenge to provide consistent and effective safety training. Given the expected high turnover of the mining workforce, it is very likely that incoming workers will have much less experience than those leaving the workforce. Unfortunately, inexperienced miners have been shown to incur the highest rate of injuries. The piece of machinery most associated with these injuries is the roof bolting machine, which accounts for 56% of machinery-related injuries in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a new report entitled “Roof Bolting Machine Operators Skills Training for a Walk-Thru Roof Bolter: Trainer’s Guide” (IC 9489). It is designed to help safety trainers develop struc-tured training for new operators of walk-thru bolting machines. This resource will help trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. Included in the trainer’s guide are the following tools: [ ] a six-part DVD video series, a skills check survey, talking points, and a complete job training analysis. Also included is an exercise to help trainees learn more about their mine’s roof control plan, as well as a list of supplemental training and reading materials. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their particular mine conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. The goal of every coal mine safety professional is to increase safety awareness and make mines a safer place to work. The Walk-Thru Bolting Machine Trainer’s Guide will help teach new miners skills to create a safer working environment that will ultimately prevent or reduce on-the-job injuries. Safety trainers can also use the ideas and concepts from this guide to develop their own training skills for the safe operation of other pieces of underground coal mining equipment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of titanium from 39 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries. The evaluated properties account for 76 pet of the market economy country demonstrated resources, which total 603 Mt of contained titanium dioxide (Ti02) in the minerals rutile, ilmenite, leucoxene, and anatase, and represent 95 pct of current production. Approximately 250 Mt of contained Ti02 could be economically recovered from evaluated titanium operations at January 1992 market prices. In terms of mineral concentrates, this equals approximately 19 Mt of rutile concentrate, 110 Mt of ilmenite concentrate, 47 Mt of synthetic rutile concentrate (in addition to the ilmenite), and 160 Mt of titanium slag that could be recovered. Over the past decade, the titanium minerals industry has adapted to the changing market. In the 1980's, titanium producers expanded production because of the rising demand for titanium products. Today, the titanium industry is in a state of overcapacity, and byproduct revenues, such as that from zircon, have become essential in keeping operations profitable. The industry has also witnessed a greater dependence on upgraded ilmenite products, such as titanium slag and synthetic rutile, because of the expense of rutile and the lower wastes emitted from these upgraded products. As a result of this dependence on upgraded ilmenite products, South Africa has become a leading titanium producing country and has displaced Australian production.

The use of radio signals for underground communications was considered as early as the mid-1920's [1] - [4] . However, early experiments did not produce promising results with the type of equipment that was available then [5] . With advancements in solid state technology many of the schemes considered impractical in the early days suddenly became practical. The properties of electromagnetic wave behavior in conducting media have been intensively studied by Wait [ 6] and others and can be utilized not only in communication with trapped miners, but also as a means of locating their position. This report deals with the development of portable electromagnetic equipment, powered by the miner's conventional lamp battery, which can be used to alert surface rescue personnel of the trapped miner Is location. The Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) under BUMINES sponsors hip initially approached the trapped miner location problem using seismic techniques. It was learned from this effort that two serious shortcomings of seismic techniques are (1) the extremely weak signals available on the surface from miner generated hammer blows, requiring long processing times at the surface receiver, and (2) the relatively slow procedure of deploying geophone arrays to sense the seismic uplink signals. By contrast, the electromagnetic techniques have proven much more practical from a deployment time standpoint and in most cases have also proven to be more accurate in determining location. Furthermore, these techniques have been successfully tested using a receiver in a heli- copter for reconnaissance purposes. However, before any electromagnetic location technique can become fully operational, the miners themselves must be equipped with emergency transmitters to be carried with them on each work shift. Consequently, much emphasis has been placed on the development of extremely lightweight transmitting equipment. The performance of some of the electromagnetic location equipment developed by Westinghouse will be described in the following sections. 2.0 Basic Concepts Theoretical concepts for locating magnetic dipoles in the earth have been treated by Wait [ 7] and Olsen [ 8] . The Bureau of Mines annually canvasses the peat producers in the United States and publishes economic data on the industry, based upon reports from producers. This publication lists all producers that reported commercial production to the Bureau for 1959. The companies named herein represent virtually all commercial producers of peat. A few companies, however, may not have been canvassed or failed to respond, as tine survey is voluntary For producers, arid the industry has many small operations that operate intermittently. No consideration was given to the quantities of peat produced and output of the various companies listed ranged from less than 100 tons to more than 50,000 tons, Peat is included in the Bureau's annual surveys of the mineral industries because, technically, peat is a fuel. Although none is used for fuel in the United States, peat is a potential source of energy and one of our large mineral resources. The domestic peat industry produces peat chiefly for use as a soil amendment. The industry has expanded rapidly during the past decade with active operations increasing from 45 in 1947-49 4/ to 105 in 1959. Output during this period has increased 218 percent, rising from 131,782 net tons to 419,460 net tons.

Several federal and state agencies have promulgated regulations that require the installation of operator protective structures on mobile equipment used in mining, construction, agriculture and logging industries. These regulations cover many different types of vehicles, from small farm tractors to large rubber-tired front-end loaders, and require structures that help protect the operator from death or injury from vehicle overturns, from falling tree tops and logs, from falling rocks, and from tree limbs in clearing operations. Two general types of vehicle operator protective structures have evolved over the past twenty years. The first of these is the "Roll-Over Protective Structure'' or "ROPS" that is essentially a "roll bar" or "roll cage" that provides a relatively safe area for the vehicle operator if the vehicle should tip over and roll. The second protective structure is the "Falling Object Protective Structure" or "FOPS" that provides overhead protection against falling material. The terms "ROPS" and "FOPS" are often used interchangeably (sometimes inaccurately) with "cabs", “canopies” , "roll bars" , protective structures" and other such descriptive names. In this report, "ROPS" describes the function of the structure; "FOPS" also describes a particular function. Thus a ROPS/FOPS could describe a cab or a canopy that provides both roll-over protection and falling object protection. “MESA” is used as an abbreviation for the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration; "USBM" is used to abbreviate the U, S. Bureau of Mines.
