This report, which covers the period from January 16 to October 21, 1974, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of contract no. H0242028 and modifications 1 and 2 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to further reline and modify three of the canopies (shuttle car, loader, and roof drill) which were developed under contract no. H0220031, and to conduct further testing and demonstration of the relined designs. Modifications I and 2 involved conducting further in-mine evaluations of the face. drill and cutter canopies, also developed under contract no. H0220031. In addition to the canopy modifications, the contract involved an evaluation of an operator's seat concept for a shuttle car which was developed for the USBM by another contractor.

THIS CHAPTER on minor nonmetals covers greensand, meerschaum, mineral wool, and wollastonite. Mineral wool was by far the most valuable material among these minor nonmetals reported in the United States in 1956. GREENSAND Output of greensand (glauconite) declined in 1956. The Kaylorite Corp., Dunkirk, Md., and the Inversand Co., Sewell, N. J., were the only firms that reported production of this commodity. Output came from open pits in Calvert County, Md., and Gloucester County, N.J.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers mounted in suspension components can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information horn a Global Positioning System is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, then the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck.

A standard Ford1 4600 agricultural tractor was converted to remote control to perform ASAE/SAE field upset tests (rear rollover and side rollover). This paper discusses the engineering process to develop a remote-controlled tractor in determining the critical parameters of operation, to choosing appropriate actuators, designing the circuitry to control them, installing the actuators on the tractor, testing the system for functionality and then conducting numerous overturn tests. The system uses off-the-shelf components for simplicity, replaceability, and economic concerns. The remote control system has withstood 21 tests to date with no failures and will continue to be used for at least three more years of testing.

The perturbation of alternating electromagnetic fields by three-dimensional structures is considered. The general model is that of a semi-infinite conducting half -space which consists of regions of different conductivities. A numerical method is used to obtain the solution for the equations and boundary conditions. The effects on the fields at the surface of the half-space due to the conductivity discontinuities are shown by three-dimensional amplitude and phase plots.

A.5 Conclusions and Recommendations The illustrative simulations in the previous section have demonstrated 1. Flexibility of the program to simulate a wide variety of configurations and cases. 2. Ability of the program to predict evacuation time within a small margin of error (5 percent -.n a case considered). 3. Usefulness of the program in making some of the evacuation decisions. The above leads to a conclusion that the computer program can provide a useful tool in evaluating mine evacuation in the event of a fire. Operator cabs on a front-end loader and a rotary rock drill were retrofitted with ceiling mounted heating1AC units and air filtration systems. Subsequently surface coal mine field studies were conducted to evaluate the respirable dust protection these retrofitted cab systems offer to the equipment operator. A significant 10: 1 respirable dust protection factor (ratio of outside to inside cab dust levels) was measured for the front-end loader cab with positive pressurization of the cab interior. Whereas an insignificant 3: 1 respirable dust protection factor was measured for the drill cab without positive pressurization of the cab interior. These results indicate that achieving positive interior cab pressurization with retrofitted cab filtration systems is a key element to their dust control effectiveness.

The Crow Indian Reservation is located in the southeastern part of Montana, stretching from near Billings, in the center of the state, to the Wyoming border in the south. The Office of Surface Mining's Casper, Wyoming, Field Office is responsible for regulating mining and reclamation on Crow tribal land. Federal legislation enacted July 11, 1987, authorized the Indian tribes to implement approved Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Programs. In early 1988 the Crow elected to develop an Abandoned Mine Land Program under the Title IV provisions of SMCRA. The tribe's plan received final approval on January 4, 1989.

Coal is found in the northeast comer of Georgia, in Dade, Chattooga, Walker, and Floyd Counties. Five seams, which underlie all of Lookout, Sand, and Pigeon Mountains, have produced most of the coal mined in the state. Representative analyses of Georgia coals show that they are typically low sulfur (less than one to one percent), low-to-medium volatile, bituminous deposits. Although there is no active mining in the state, reclamation continues on several permitted areas. In 1983 the State of Georgia relinquished primacy to the Office of Surface Mining. Since that time permits have been issued and mining completed. All the sites are presently in the process of bond release.
