Froth flotation is one of the most actively pursued research and development areas in the coal preparation industry today. Many new types of flotation machines and processes are being developed and compared in an effort to handle the increased quantity of coal fines produced by finer grinding for greater liberation of ash- forming and sulfur-bearing mineral matter. Of the many new machines and processes under development for deep cleaning ultrafine coals, it is quite likely that many will not reach industrial use in the near future; in fact, it is quite likely that some never will. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to select and describe a few of the new flotation machines and processes that appear to have reached a level of development that would suggest their eventual use on an industrial scale. It is probable, and doubtless will be argued, that some of the selections given in this paper should not have been included, while others should have, but the reader must understand that the author is restricted by the information available. And because most of the information available comes from those who are developing the equipment and/ or processes, it is often confusing and conflicting. Thus with a somewhat moderated plan, the author proposes to point out some in- congruities in the literature in the hope that such information might promote more independent study and perhaps explain the abundant promise versus the scant use of the new equipment and processes described.

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. INTRODUCTION Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and sili- cosis are only two of several diseases which are rlassed as pneumoconiosis. These are respiratory diseases caused by dusts which are inhaled and accumulated in the lungs. The individual particles of dust cannot be seen by the human eye. They are so small that they escape the natural cleansing mechanism of the nose and air passages and make their way down to the terminal air sacs of the lung where they injure the cells and cause the formation of scar tissue. Consequently, if there is exposure to high concentrations of dust over a period of time - usually, a number of years - the amount of scar tissue increases and begins to impair breathing. As a result, the miner develops shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing ad-if exposure continues - this progresses to permanent disability and frequently to death. Death is often due to pulmonary heart disease, the effect of stress on the heart 2s it tries to compensate for the weakened lungs. Specifically, silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by the accumulation of free silica (quartz) in the lungs. Silicosis is considered the most important form of pneumoconiosis, not only because of its seriousness as a respiratory crippler, but also because of the large number of workers who risk contracting it in a variety of occupations. Quartz is one of the most common substances of the earth's crust, estimated at about 60 percent. Silicosis has been found in coal, metal and granite miners, as well as in other workers, such as sandblasters and pottery makers. Silicosis is also known to predispose the lung to tuberculosis and to increase the chances that a worker will contract chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The seriousness of silicosis was tragically brought to public attention about 50 years ago. During 1932-34, workers were involved in digging a tunnel through rock at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. While their exposure time was relatively short, they developed silicosis because of the high concentrations of quartz. By 1936, 476 workers had died of silicosis and about 1500 were believed to have the disease (Washington Post, 1982). It is difficult to tell how many coal miners have silicosis. Because x-rays and breathing function tests do not show the difference the type of pneumoconiosis is generally diagnosed by the miner's work history. For example, if a worker

INTRODUCTION Historical mining activities in the Robinson Mining District, in the Egan Range of east-central Nevada (White Pine County), resulted in five open pits (Veteran, Tripp, Liberty, Ruth, and Kimbley Pits), several large mine-waste dumps, and numerous underground workings developed for copper, zinc, gold, lead-silver, and manganese (Figure 1). Groundwater percolating downward through the copper sulfide ores produced a blanket-like supergene zone enriched in copper, which has been one of the primary objectives of mining since the early part of this century. To obtain permits for future operation, an EIS was conducted that evaluated future pit- lake chemistry, groundwater quantity and quality issues, transport of water and solutes subjacent to a proposed tailings impoundment, and the potential for waste dump acidification. AREA HYDROGEOLOGY The mine area is on a ridgeline draining to the Steptoe Valley to the east and to the White River Valley to the West. Precipitation in the Robinson Mining District ranges from a low of 15 cm (6 in.) per year in the valley to more than 50 cm (20 in.) per year in the surrounding mountains. Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation, leading to a net loss of water from the basin as either surface flow or underflow to the north at Currie, Nevada (Eakin et al. 1967). The White River Valley, which lies to the south and west of the mine area, includes approximately 4,200 km2 (1,620 mi2) of the upper part of the Colorado River Basin. This valley is 112 km (70 mi) long, 32-48 km (20-30 mi) wide, and like Steptoe Valley, evaporation and transpiration exceed precipitation (Maxey and Eakin 1949). The local groundwater flow system in the Robinson Mining District and the proposed mine area is dominated by two main components: (1) a groundwater mound or high between the Ruth Pit and Murry Springs, and (2) a shallow groundwater flow divide that follows the ridge crest south of Ruth, which contains the Veteran and Tripp pits. Besides the alluvium, the main hydrostratigraphic units controlling groundwater flow are limestones, shales, and sandstones, along with the intrusive quartz monzonite stocks. Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer designated crystalline silica as a 2A probable carcinogen. As a result, crystalline silica is regulated under the Hazard Communication Standard as a probable carcinogen at a concentration of 0.1% or greater in the workplace. Crystalline silica will be listed as "reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen" by the National Toxicological Program. This designation of crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen has created major issues for the mineral and chemical producer, including labeling, hazard communications, marketing a material with potential hazard exposure, and potential liability. The State of California also regulates crystalline silica under Proposition 65 in products as a carcinogen, based upon the IARC determination that it is a probable carcinogen. More federal and state regulations are anticipated as a result of the IARC classification of crystalline silica and its subsequent federal regulation. Respirable crystalline silica has been regulated as a hazardous dust for many years by OSHA. This regulation was initiated to prevent silicosis, another occupational disease. OSHA has established monitoring devices for determining the concentration of airborne respirable silica in order to measure exposure to this substance. The accurate determination of the crystalline silica content is critical to dealing with these health risks and regulations. In the past, crystalline silica was considered to be safe and, because of its ubiquitous nature, little effort was made to determine or quantify its presence in most materials. The Hazard Communication Standard requires that a1l products containing 0.1% or greater crystalline silica must be properly labeled for this material and its hazard. Unfortunately, the 0.1% threshold was not chosen on the basis of established analytical capabilities for crystalline silica, but results from general limits for potentially carcinogenic chemicals and substances. Numerous methods have been developed for the determination of crystalline silica in a variety of products. However, these methods are not generally applicable since they must be specific for silica in any of its crystalline states and not just for total silica content. Chemical tests for silica are not difficult and quite accurate at the 0.1% level; however, in addition to its crystalline phases, it occurs in amorphous phases and in a wide variety of crystalline and amorphous silicates. In general, there is little correlation between total silica content and crystalline silica.

This review summarizes three sets of ongoing studies which we are performing in collaboration with a number of researchers associated with the Dept. of Interior - Generic Mineral Technology Center for the Study of Respirable Dusts, concerning surfactant-particle interactions studied using this surrogate surfactant. These topics are: (A) the suppression of mineral particle cytotoxic potential by DPL adsorption and the persistence of this effect under conditions of enzymatic digestion; (B) surfactant suppression of organic particle cytotoxicity by DPL adsorption and the effect on subsequent expression of genotoxic potential; (C) potential effects of surfactant on heterogeneous structured complex respirable particles. The references list some of our reports which can provide additional information on these studies. Further, those reports provide references to the literature of the field and to the works of others on these topics. Deep lung airspaces, the pulmonary alveoli and respiratory bronchioles, are coated with a hypophase which is rich in surfactant biomolecules secreted by the alveolar type II epithelial cells. The surfactant is known to be critical to maintaining stable low surface tensions on the inner surfaces of the alveoli by forming a surfactant layer on the airliquid interface of the alveolar hypophase. Upon deposition in the acinar regions of the lung a respired particle's initial contact will be with this surfactant coating over pulmonary tissue. A primary component of this surfactant is the phospholipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, commonly called lecithin. A surface layer of dipalmitoly lecithin on saline will act much as full pulmonary surfactant in decreasing surface tension and producing a hysteresis in surface tension behavior with surface area. We have used dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL), a major component of that surfactant, dispersed in physiologic saline as a surrogate for studying interactions of both mineral and organic respirable particles with pulmonary surfactant and consequent effects on particle toxic behavior. A. DUST CYTOTOXICITY AND LECITHIN SURFACTANT ADSORPTION Respirable quartz and kaolin clay particles are found to be comparably cytotoxic in a number of in vitro bioassays including lavaged rat pulmonary macrophage release of cytosolic and lysosomal enzymes, and red blood cell hemolysis as a measure of dust membranolytic potential. These direct and prompt cytotoxic activities do not account for the distinctly greater potential for quartz to induce pulmonary disease. When respirable quartz and kaolin are incubated with a dispersion of DPL in saline at 37C it is found that the prompt cytotoxicity of both dusts is fully suppressed as measured in vitro by pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase, beta-N-

The goal of slope mechanics is to achieve efficient and safe pit slopes. In the case of ultimate mine slopes the objective is to minimize the stripping ratio by steepening the slopes to their maximum stable limit. On the other hand, the inclination of working slopes is normally established by operating space requirements and the function of slope mechanics should be the continuous surveillance of slope conditions to assure long-term stability and to provide timely warning of impending slides so that corrective measures may be incorporated in production planning. In 1956 Kennecott instituted a program to provide the resources necessary to develop and maintain a slope mechanics capability, including technical knowledge, engineers, and instruments. Although the goal has not been fully achieved, very significant progress has been made. Other papers (3, 4, 7, 8, & 12) have described the purposes and detailed results of the most recent study carried out at the Kimbley Pit. The study has provided valuable experience and has given the industry a three dimensional picture of the stability variables that influence a mine slope. The study has better defined those areas which require further investigation and has indicated those design and analytical techniques which can be used with confidence. In effect, the study has paved the way for the next step; that of refining the design process and applying it for profit.

The cluster of gold deposits at the Goldstrike property is located in the Northern Carlin Trend in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). At many mature mining camps like Goldstrike, exploration innovation and success may wane with time. In this regard, sufficient exploration drilling was conducted in the area immediately north of the ultimate pit crest and under the final planned pit wall to test for a major deposit. No indications of large deposits were found, however, the majority of drill holes did intercept mineralization. Mining along the northern pit wall exposed significant structurally controlled ore-grade mineralization that had been missed by exploration drilling. In 2002 and early 2003, the mine geology group added reserves to the pit and improved the definition of underground resources by targeting specific ore-controlling structures within favorable stratigraphic units by utilizing relatively inexpensive horizontal RC drilling from the pit wall. The widespread occurrence of mineralization to the north of the pit was re-interpreted to be an indication of continuity of these mineralized zones. In January 2003, 70 feet of 0.332 opt Au at a depth of 710 to 780 feet was intercepted in a dewatering well. This intercept was significantly thicker and higher-grade than average for the area, which confirmed the existence of high-grade structural continuity, and helped secure management support for additional exploration. A timely and cost effective solution was needed to confirm the potential of the area. Immediate follow-up drilling on tighter grid spacing was rejected in favor of improving the geology model. Exploration across the property would benefit from an improved geology model, but to provide results in a timely manner, the area to the north of the Betze pit was chosen as a starting point (Fig. 2).

Production In 1993, it was estimated that United States mine production of barite increased 24%. Barite consumption, either sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 39% and imports increased 4%, according to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 80% of the total, followed by Georgia. It is estimated that 83% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 17% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Prices The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 1%, according to the USBM. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1993 decreased from $40.09/t ($36.37/st) in 1992 to $37.72/t ($34.22/st). Uses Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals, fillers in paper, plastics, brake shoes and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1993. The average number of rotary rigs operating in the United States was 754, 5% greater than the 1992 average of 717. Imports Crude barite imports in 1993 were 443 kt (488,000 st) greater than 1992, representing an increase of 137%. Imports accounted for 67% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States.

For the past quarter of century, much more effort and research have been expended in developing the "optimum" ultimate pit limit design algorithms and much less to solving the "optimum" open pit production sequencing. However, the potential economic benefit to an operating mine is far greater for the latter than the former. Unfortunately, the problem of "optimum" open-pit production sequencing has not been fully solved to date. This paper first reviews the past and currently used methodologies for developing this sequence. The staggered pit phase geometry problem of advanced stripping and operational constraints such as ore and waste tonnage requirements by period and necessary contiguity of mining faces are the main reasons why the "optimum" production sequencing problem has not been solved as yet. This paper also explains why any method which attempts to simplify the problem using ultimate pit limit design algorithm will fail to reach an "optimum" solution.

The heavy oil reservoirs of Alberta and Saskatchewan include sequences of unconeolidated silts and fine sands which respond in an unusual manner when subjected to the high temperature and pore-fluid-pressure associated with steam injection and other thermal enhanced recovery techniques. Apparent transient connections are suddenly established between producers and injectore and there is an associated enhancement in oil (and sand) production. These phenomena have been attributed to local fluidization and piping processes which are known to occur in situations where high pore-fluid-pressures prevent the mobilization of intergranular friction. These breakdown processes may be associated with the penetration of tongues of the heated reservoir fluids with suspended sand into the creep sensitive intact reservoir since the viscosity ratios are sufficiently high for viscous fingering instability of the fluid-fluid interface. A program of laboratory tests has been carried out to measure the strength characteristic of saturated oil sands at a variety of temperatures and fluid pressures. These tests suggest, that in common with the coarser Athabasca sands, the Waseca sands have very little cohesive strength and show the characteristic dilational failure response of dense sands. Some special tests, devised to determine the relative ease with which samples can be fluidized, confirm the expected susceptibility of the fine- sand silts. Both piping and fluidization can be readily induced at in-situ reservoir temperatures and pressures. Analysis of stresses around wellbores suggests that fluid-pressure gradients may be sufficient to initiate piping and that backward erosion along streamlines may link producers and injectors. Such pipes may act as well “adits” gathering oil from the heated reservoir and contributing to enhanced production rates. Mechanical breakdown of the reservoir by drilling, injection and production processes provides a consistent possible explanation for the sand-cut response of production wells.

The author has known Professor Wadsworth since the 1960s, when interest in the application of microbial technology for metallurgical processes was beginning its rapid rise. The development of bioleaching and mineral biooxidation was advanced, in part, by Wadsworth's belief in the potential for its application, as well as by his numerous contributions to the understanding of the fundamentals of hydro-metallurgy. Wadsworth is recognized for fostering research and development of the field and adding credibility to microbiological-based metallurgical processes, now often referred to as biohydrometallurgy. This Wadsworth Award is recognition of the field of biohy-drometallurgy. It is an honor to serve as a representative for all those individuals involved in research and commercial development of this technology. Modern commercial application of biohydromctallurgy began with the bioleaching of copper from submarginal-grade. run-of-mine material. Kennecott Copper successfully developed this process in the 1950s at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. Other mining operations around the world followed Kennecott's lead. Today, dump bioleaching remains a very low-cost process for scavenging copper from rock that cannot be economically processed by any other method. Despite the commercial success of dump bioleaching, little effort has been made to enhance the micro Biological component of this leach process. Expansion of biohydro metallurgy into recovery of other metals did not occur until the mid-1980s, when the first commercial plant for the pretreatment of refractory gold-bearing concentrate was commissioned at the Fairview operation in south Africa. Now, processes for copper bioleaching and refractory gold pretreatment are engineered specifically to promote the activity of the microorganisms. This paper reviews the current state of commercial applications of biohydrometallurgy. It examines potential future developments and portrays the role of the microbiologist in facilitating continued growth and commercial acceptance of the technology. The commercia1 examples in this paper illustrate the expansion of microbial processing in the mining industry during the last 20 years. Every operation connected with the working of a deep-level mine has, to a greater or lesser extent, a direct bearing on the costs of production, and hence, profitability of the mine. If adequate mine planning is not done in the early stages in the life of a mine, considerable expenditure can result from the cost of maintaining mine service tunnels, production delays in stopes caused by poor strata control, distortion of fittings in hoisting shafts, rockbursts and so on. In fact, the optimum profitability of a deep-level, hard-rock mine can only be achieved if the layout of the shaft systems, ore passes, tunnels, stoping areas and other underground excavations are designed to withstand or accommodate the rock stress conditions that will be created by mining operations. In South Africa where the deepest mines in the world are located, access to the underground workings of most deep-level gold mines is via vertical shaft systems and a network of tunnels connecting the shaft systems to the stoping areas. In current practice, there are two basic methods of extracting the gold-bearing reef,* namely, the scattered stoping method and the longwall stoping method. The choice of the stoping method is governed largely by the anticipated gold distribution and payability of the reef in the area, the geological conditions, the degree and complexity of faulting and dyke intrusions, the depth at which the gold-bearing reef is to be mined and the inclination and width of the reef. The longwall system was first introduced at the East 717 Rand Proprietary Mines Limited in 1942 in an effort to combat the rockburst hazard which appeared to increase with increase in depth. This mining method became standard practice on that mine for stoping operations 700 ft. below the surface. Since that date, several deep mines on the Central Rand, East Rand and West Wits gold mining areas have adopted this method.

The Tilden concentrator was originally constructed in 1974 for the processing of low grade hematite. Flotation is a key concentrating process in the operation, and therefore flotation optimization has been a major concern since the plant startup. This paper will discuss some of the modifications made in the process to achieve optimization. The conversion that now enables the plant to process magnetite as well as hematite also will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The Tilden Mine, located in Ishpeming, Michigan, is managed by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs and two Canadian steel makers. It was constructed and started production in 1974 and expanded in 1979 for processing a low grade, fine-grained hematite iron formation for which there was previously no technology available. Several papers have been written describing the unique character of the concentrating operation. The hematite plant consists of 12 grinding and concentrating lines, which utilize two stages of autogenous grinding with crushing of an intermediate sized product. The ground product is deslimed in a highly dispersed alkaline environment to reject silica. Corn starch, the flocculant, has a high affinity for iron at the operating pH range of 10.5 to 11.0. The ore is upgraded from 35% to 45% iron in the desliming step. The deslime thickener underflow is the feed to flotation. Each flotation line consists of a bank of 10 rougher cells, followed by four scavenging banks incorporating 5, 4, 3, and 3 cells each. The Wemco flotation cells are each 14.1 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) in volume. A total of 12 flotation lines are available. [ ] A reverse flotation process is employed, using a straight-chain, 8 to 10 carbon primary ether amine silica collector. At the levels used in the circuit, the amine also serves as a frother. A final concentrate is produced in the rougher cells. The concentrates from the four scavenging steps are combined and recirculated to the feed end of the roughers, with the fourth scavenger froth being discarded as a final tailing. Upgrading to about 65% iron is achieved, with control of the circuit based on final concentrate silica grade. Starch is again used, this time as a depressant for iron. During the years of operation, several key areas of the flotation process have been targeted for optimization. The most significant improvements have been realized in the following areas: *Grade Control Automation *Control of Water System Chemistry *Flotation Spray Water This paper will focus on these areas, but other minor improvements also will be briefly discussed.

The minerals barite (BaSO, -barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO, -barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds, whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modem industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry, which in 1990 consumed about 90% of the world's production of 4.9 Mt as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid called mud that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite is found throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity-filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase because of the world's need for oil and gas. Geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite, desirable as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals, is much less common and abundant than barite.

Four numerical models written with the "PFC2D " program were compared against four similar physical models. The numerical models were constrained numerically to closely follow the caving behavior of the physical models. Results from the numerical analyses closely simulated both the granular and blocky behaviors of the physical models, including bridging and interlocking of the simulated orebody during draw. The drawdown patterns and the rate of draw developed during numerical modeling also closely simulated the physical models. The same assumptions and governing parameters used in analyzing the first four models were applied to an additional model. The fifth model employed a completely different, uneven, draw sequence than the other four models, allowing the material to flow in a more granular manner with a demonstrated instability of the undercut sections between each drawpoint opening. Drawdown patterns and behavior of the numerical material of the first four models progressed at uneven and inconsistent rates, similar to those seen in the physical models. By inspection, the overall shape and flow lines of both the numerical and physical models were close in the area removed and in the flow characteristics. The fifth model proved to be the most unstable of all the models tested, with poor correlation to the physical models. The uneven draw sequence, coupled with an additional frictionless wall condition and an added drawpoint, caused the material to flow in a very granular manner. Information generated by this study can be used as a first approach in determining the proper draw rate, drawpoint spacing and undercut thickness for a block-caving operation. Numerical models are often difficult to predict and interpret. However, this study should increase the confidence level for use of the PFC2D program in the future.

While the oil shale resources of the US are becoming increasingly known, few people in this country are aware of the extensive worldwide occurrence of this resource. Two recent international conferences* confirmed the growing worldwide interest in oil shales, both as future and current energy sources. The 1981 conference noted the difficulty in characterizing worldwide oil shale resources because of lack of common terminology in reporting both assay value and resource potential. Assay value is variously reported as: •US gallons per short ton; •Imperial gallons per metric ton; •Liters per metric ton; •Liters per cubic meter; •Weight percent oil; and •Volume percent oil. Oil shale resources are variously reported in barrels, short tons of oil shale, metric tons of oil shale, and cubic meters of shale oil. Worldwide petroleum shortages sparked interest in alternate energy resources including oil shales. While petroleum supplies appear to have stabilized, at least for a while, high costs are affecting the balance of payment index of many countries, resulting in a continued search for local energy resources. Kerogen is the organic constituent of oil shale and may be the most abundant form of hydrocarbon on earth, possibly exceeding coal occurrences and far more abundant than naturally-occurring petroleum resources. Oil shale, by one name or another, is widespread and is known to exist in more than 38 countries (Table 1). Oil shale industries have existed in at least 14 countries at one time or another. Many predated the Drake oil discovery in Pennsylvania in 1859, and most were unable to compete with natural oil; these operations either converted to its use or closed. At the present time shale oil is being produced on a commercial scale only in the USSR and in China. Only very rough estimates of grade and quantity are available for most of the worldwide shale occurrences since only a few deposits have been thoroughly explored. The Green River Formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming is an exception. For many years this oil shale deposit has been described as the largest single concentration of hydrocarbon material in the world. With increasing world interest, larger deposits may yet be found. In 1965, the US Geological Survey published an in-place world oil shale estimate. This study, while made some 16 years ago, is still a reasonable order-of-magnitude estimate. Although exploration and evaluation are underway and a few oil shale deposits have been appraised, information on which to evaluate most worldwide oil shale occurrences has improved little since 1965. Roller presses were first invented in the middle of the 19th century, for the economical size enlargement of coal fines as fuels. Coal briquettes became quickly accepted for industrial and domestic use giving rise to a large and sucessful industry, particularly in Europe, Japan, and North America. When, towards the middle of the 20th century, coal was more and more replaced by other energy sources, such as electricity, gas, and oil, roller press manufacturers searched for alternate applications of this equipment. In addition to contemporary coal briquetting, in fields such as smokeless fuel and form-coke, it was found that redesigned and modernized roller presses, which are now capable of exerting high forces, are versatile machines for many tasks in mineral processing. Today they are used for: - the "classic" pressure agglomeration and - the "new" high pressure comminution. In pressure agglomeration, the characteristics of fine minerals are improved by forming briquettes or granulated products from compacts. During size enlargement with roller presses briquettes are directly obtained while granular materials are produced by crushing and sizing of compacted sheets. The processes are carried-out essentially dry and often do not require binders other than those inherently contained in the feed and "activated" by the high forces and/or elevated feed temperatures (e.g. hot briquetting). Therefore, no foreign materials (impurities) are added. Another advantage of the technology is, that wide particle size distributions are acceptable or desirable as feed materials, including millimeter or even centimeter sized particles. Plastic particles deform and brittle materials are crushed during pressure agglomeration. A relatively new application of roller presses in mineral processing is the utilization of the crushing effect when brittle materials pass the nip area between the rollers. It was found that this crushing mechanism is very efficient thus saving energy, particularly in grinding circuits handling large capacities. The paper introduces the fundamentals of the process and describes the design as well as applications of modern roller presses in mineral processing.
