Remote control for mining machines ordinarily means the operator is not seated on the machine, but is located within direct view of the machine and work area Thus, remote control operators are exposed to the hazards of roof/rib falls and dust/methane explosions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to disassociate remote operators from these hazards. Off-board, computer-based "tele-operational" systems are utilized that station the operators one-hundred meters or more distant from the working faces. Details are provided for tele-operated systems for thin-seam extraction and haulage equipment in highwall and deep, room-and-pillar coal mines.

An initial point that I would like to make very emphatically?and as our title might erroneously suggest for those of you old enough to remember . . . Peter Harben and myself do not intend to shoot ourselves in the foot. We derive our livelihood from a number of aggregate, industrial and other minerals producers, both here in the United States and outside. This paper, therefore, is a fence-straddler or for information purposes (we hope) only, rather than any "fur or agin" stances. In essence, some of you may consider it a U.S.G.S. publication! In fact, we hope that it serves to inspire aggregates producers to do some radical thinking, to promote introspection, and to that end it would benefit both domestic and foreign producers. The title could be shortened into a brief question of "Aggregates Travel?" with an emphatic no for the answer. In the past, the success of a construction materials venture depended upon your ability, through siting, to provide the customer f.o.b. the job site, a product at the lowest possible cost.

Computer aided design and inter active graphics have been well established in the electronics, automotive and mechanical engineering industries. The use of such aids in underground mine design and planning, however, has been noticeably absent. The large expense involved in the research and development of CAD and graphics systems and their highly specialized techniques have rendered investment in these areas difficult to justify. Optimum mine planning involves an interactive procedure of evaluation of several alternative plans. Generally the development of each mine plan of a given operation can take many man-months. This time constraint on planning precludes any comparative analysis and evaluation of alternatives, thereby introducing the possibility of unrealized gains. This paper outlines the development of a computer aided mine design program utilizing interactive graphics for the design, simulation and scheduling of underground coal mines. The program developed examines exploratory borehole information and produces a structured database of the sampled data. This database is utilized to generate seam sections and different mine layouts. A simulation of mine extraction and production levels and a schedule of proposed alternatives are then performed.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. This paper focuses on the KRS Algorithms that extract key information from lists of time study type event sequences. Because a static system cannot operate effectively in a dynamic mining environment, we are prototyping an index based technique that allows the system to adapt itself to this dynamic environment.

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.

A new sanitary sewer was installed in Pleasant Hill, California using microtunnelling methods. The project consisted of 693 meters of 1372 mm and 1981 mm concrete pipe. A Herrenknecht AVN 1200 was used to install the nominal 1372 mm pipe in three drives. The machine was then fitted with an oversized shield used to install the large diameter pipeline. This articulated shield allowed the excavation of a 2362 mm diameter hole with a 1524 mm machine-- a technique new to North America. This paper reviews the design considerations for the articulated shield and reports on the project challenges and solutions to overcome these challenges.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. The design and effectiveness of ground consolidation to regain stability of longwall faces vary widely and are often based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. Little is known regarding product migration characteristics or change in rockmass conditions as a result of the application of consolidation chemicals. This paper presents the in-situ testing rationale designed and implemented recently across several longwall operations in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia to provide quantitative measurement of the actual zone of influence of various resin injection products. Product migra- tion was physically measured by monitoring the change in rockmass temperature as a result of the exothermic chemical reaction of the various strata consolidation chemicals used. In conjunction with strata coring and Lugeon transmissivity testing pre- and post-injection to characterise the improvement in rockmass conditions due to consolidation product injection. The results of the testing programme, migration measurements, and rockmass assessment are presented, along with a discussion on how site- based Rock Mechanics Engineers can incorporate the data into the design of strata consolidation plans.

Treatment of bentonite clay with mineral acids yields a modified clay product of high surface area and acidity which exhibits enhanced adsorptive and catalytic properties. A highly specialized segment of the clay industry based on this process has evolved into worldwide business with a capacity of about one-half million tons/yr. This paper will present data on the chemistry, mining, manufacturing and applications for acid- activated clays.

The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.

The Buick Concentrator represents state-of- the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries, lead concentrate grade and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs and personnel. The productivity improvement discussion is preceded by a concentrator description and a brief history of the process control development at Buick. Current control strategies and future applications are presented afterward.

Alunite has been utilized as raw materials for producing alumina and potassium sulfate fertilizer in Russia for many years. In the United States, this mineral has not been commercially processed though reserves of 5 to 10 billion tons of alunite ore have been estimated. Major constituents of these ores include quartz and alunite. The minerals are finely intergrown and liberation occurs below 10 microns. Adequate separation techniques for such fine particles have not been developed. A new method for the beneficiation of alunite ore is proposed in this study. 'Ibis method utilizes a small amount of fine magnetite upon which the liberated quartz is selectively flocculated. The co-flocculated magnetite and quartz are then separated from the alunite in a high gradient magnetic separator. Clean products, e.g. an alunite concentrate of 90% grade with 80% recovery, has been obtained from an Utah ore. Techniques for the selective co-flocculation of magnetite and quartz, the separation of the carried quartz, and the recovery of magnetite after separation are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20'x50' horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.

Rockfall hazards are ubiquitous in mining environments making their control critical for safe mining operations. The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

The fossil resins of certain western coals are of significance and of sufficient value as a chemical commodity to justify a fossil resin industry. At the present time these valuable fossil resin resources, worth more than $0.50/lb as a chemical commodity, are being burned as fuel for electric power generation. This waste of our fossil resin resources corresponds to a loss in revenue of $200 million per year -equivalent to the value of the coal itself! Improved process technology for the recovery of fossil resin is under development and includes selective flotation of fossil resin from fine coal streams and solvent refining of the fossil resin flotation concentrate to produce a premium resin product. The most recent developments in process technologies are discussed with respect to separation efficiency and product quality. It is clear that the development of a fossil resin industry should not be limited by process technology.

This paper presents the results from an extensive research program on the vacuum filtration of iron ore slurries. Experiments were conducted with the addition of several types of flocculants and surfactants. The filtration response of the slurries was studied in terms of the cake formation rate and the residual cake moisture. In 1968 three historical rockbursts had occurred at Bibai Coal Mine in Hokkaido. At the time they had been observed by several seismic observatories as natural earthquakes away more than 100km from Bibai City. These facts taught us that the occuerrence of failure yielded in underground opening that was accompanied with seismic wave could be observed by seismometer on the surface. After two years from this desaster, the study concerning to microseismic events generated from underground mining panels has been begun by researchers with heart-throb.

Ore grindability data based on various techniques to measure comminution characteristics are used to evaluate the crushing and grinding efficiency in mineral processing operations. The importance of achieving improved comminution efficiency, in terms of energy consumption, has been emphasized by recent increases in the cost of electricity. From a theoretical standpoint, the objective of a grinding operation might be expressed as maximizing the production rate at a given grind size while minimizing the energy consumption per ton of material ground. To achieve this objective in an industrial operation presents a challenge especially in view of changes in the raw material which are normally encountered. Various procedures1-5 used to determine energy-size parameters and grindability measurements have been reported. The proposed relationships between particle size and energy consumed have much in common between many of the techniques for measuring grindability. Probably the most widely used parameter to measure ore grindability in recent years is the Bond work index6, Wi, which is defined as the kw-hr per ton required to break from infinite size to a product size of 80 percent passing 100 microns. If the breakage characteristics of a material remain constant over all size ranges, then the calculated work index would be expected to remain-constant since it expresses the resistance of material to breakage. However for most naturally occurring raw materials differences exist in the breakage characteristics depending on particle size, which can result in variations in the work index depending on grind size. Consequently work index values are generally obtained for some specified grind size which typifies the comminution operation being designed or evaluated.

The importance of properly designed and calculated performance factors for the BWE systems cannot be overemphasised. They are used by all levels of management in any mining organization for a wide variety of purposes, in particular for budgeting, for selecting new equipment, for monitoring current equipment and for comparison with other operations.

The Folsom Area Stormwater Improvement Project is part of SFPUC’s flood resilience efforts under the Sewer System Improvement Program. This 4,000-foot-long, 12-footinside- diameter tunnel will help reduce the risk of flooding in San Francisco’s low-lying Inner Mission neighborhood. The project is in a high seismic hazard zone and extends through a complex geologic corridor that includes full-face soft, compressible Bay Mud, Colma Sands, and full-face rock with several stretches of mixed-face conditions. Additional challenges include removal of 99 piles beneath an existing box sewer, tunneling under commuter rail tracks, and an underground tie-in. This paper examines these challenges and how they are being addressed.
