This paper describes the decomposition of bulk samples to fine particles using alkali metal vapors. Basalt, pyrite, alumina, pyrex and quartz glass samples were exposed to sodium vapors at elevated temperatures for different time periods up to 30 hours. Examination of the particles showed that fragmentation occurred preferentially along grain boundaries. Emphasis of this paper is on the theory of the degradation mechanism and the size distribution of the particles produced.

The Hardgrove grindability index (HGI) is a widely used coal-quality parameter with applications in coal mining, beneficiation, and utilization. An understanding of the petrology of the coal is fundamental to understanding the validity of the HGI in the given application. The HGI varies with coal rank, increasing (greater ease of grinding) with increasing rank through the high-volatile bituminous rank range; and the HGI varies with changes in the maceral and microlithotype composition, decreasing with an increase in liptinite and liptinite-rich microlithotypes. In this review, the .fundamental relationship between HGI and coal petrology, and consequently its relationship to coal utilization, is examined.

This paper (1) presents new data on the use of horizontal curves to optimize the alignment of belt conveyors. The operating concept of a horizontal curve is simple. As an element of the belt passes through the curve, it is motivated to drift toward the center of the curve by unbalanced tension forces in the belt. This lateral drift is resisted by the forces of friction and gravity, which in turn can be stated as a function of drift. Resisting forces, as a function of drift, are stated in terms of variables such as the amount of load on the belt, and parameters such as the trough angle, tilt angle, and super elevation angle, and number of rolls in the idler. The trick is to determine that the belt will drift to a position of equilibrium within predictable limits, without physically constraining the edge of the belt. In practice this prediction is not easy to make without the aid of a computer. The motivating force is easy to calculate, but its value is continually changing throughout the angle subtended by the curve arc. The resisting forces are constant throughout the curve for a given drift and load condition, but the calculations are very complex. Data in this paper will assist the conveyor designer in making preliminary calculations for horizontal curves. Presented is the equation for calculating the motivating force, and a family of curves that show the resisting force as a function of lateral drift for some commonly encountered conveyor design criteria.

7.1 INTRODUCTION The circulating fluid (generally an aqueous cyanide solution) is the major active component of heap leaching. This solution extracts precious metal from the heap and is then processed to recover the precious metal. The solution continuously recycles through the heap to recover more precious metal. With each cycle through the heap, water and chemicals are lost. Make-up water and chemicals must be added to balance losses from evaporation, seepage, entrainment, and chemical reaction in the heap, as well as any other processing losses. Adding more water than needed can result in a build-up of water as inventory in the various ponds and can eventually require that water be discharged from the operation. This is an extremely undesirable condition, and can often be very expensive in both investment in water treating facilities and operating costs. Most heap leach facilities operate under a zero discharge permit; thus, a situation requiring water discharge can result in permit violation. Chemical solution control must be managed to maintain the optimum pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cyanide content, while preventing "scaling". Calcium-based precipitation is a common scaling problem in mill reclaim waters. A buildup of these deposits can result in severe reduction of water flow, loss of pump efficiency and eventual interruption in metal production. In addition, problems of plugged sprinkler heads, blinded leach pads and fouled carbon (in carbon recovery systems) can be and often are experienced when scale control is not maintained. The remainder of this chapter discusses chemical solution control and scaling prediction/prevention in the context of a "closed" system. Sizing of ponds to accommodate precipitation and runoff, collection systems, and other similar design considerations are not discussed here. These topics are deferred to later chapters, e.g. Chapter 10 considers design of collection systems while Chapter 12 discusses pond sizing. 7.2 CHEMICAL CONTROL Chemical composition of the circulating solution must be controlled by the operator if the heap leaching process is to be successful. The most common method of determining airflow employed by mine ventilation engineers is the product of i) the average air velocity as measured by a vane anemometer and stopwatch through a continuous traversing technique, with ii) the cross-sectional area of the roadway. This method requires the vane anemometer to accumulate the total flow over the duration of the traverse. Historically, this has been facilitated by a mechanical analog instrument that has either a counter or set of dials that display the flow. Common instruments of this type are Airflow Development's AM5000, Davis's, or Taylor's Biram type anemometer. The AM5000 is widely used in the Canadian mining industry but is no longer available. Therefore, regulatory authorities have seen fit to evaluate presently available commercial instruments to replace the AM5000. This paper describes an instrument evaluation contracted by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada which regulates the uranium industry. Over the last two decades there have been numerous advances in the development of electronic air velocity meters. Currently available units have the following features: a) battery operation; b) are compact and can be hand-held; c) employ LCD's, and microelectronic circuitry; and d) provide a time integration for the duration of a traverse. These features make such instruments a possible replacement to the analog units and stopwatch determinations. This paper details five of the new generation of vane anemometers plus a vortex air meter, and it explores their limitations in comparison to analog units. Specific consideration is given to linear response, the effects of yaw, traversing speeds and ergonomics relating to both handling and use. The paper concludes with some features that are attractive and should be considered when purchasing a new anemometer.

I met Austin Taylor in Vancouver on my way home from my first Pioneer examination. He asked me to examine the unsuccessful old Lorne mine, adjoining and west of the Pioneer. I had no idea that this meeting would lead to one of the outstanding successes and pleasant associations of my career. I knew nothing of Taylor, except that Gen. McRae and associates said that he had been engaged in lumbering and was interested in an oil and gasoline marketing company called Home Oil. But even if the Lorne examination would be only a small one, in the depths of the Depression in 1931, I was glad to have a chance to look at another gold property, so I agreed to visit the Lorne early in August. The start of the trip was not auspicious. I had been working hard on an unproductive study, and was greatly worried by my father's hopeless illness with tuberculosis. To get a little rest on my way north I had arranged to go from Seattle to Vancouver on the night boat that connected with my train. To my surprise, Bill Boultbee, an associate of Taylor, met me at the train in Seattle at 9:30. He said he would drive me to Vancouver, arriving at one In the morning. I was so tired that I begged off and let him take the drive alone Boultbee was most understanding and friendly, but I knew how I would have felt if I had been kind enough to take the long drive to help a stranger and then had been forced to make the return midnight drive alone. I was lucky they did not call off the examination at once. I got a good sleep on the Vancouver boat and Austin Taylor met me at the Hotel Vancouver for breakfast. After a brief talk he took me to the small steamer that made the 4-hr sail up Howe Sound to the village of Squamish. This was the end of the Province-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway that was eventually to be a shortcut from Vancouver to the Canadian National main line at Prince George. Because

In June of 2002 Hilti North America received the first MSHA permissible approval for usage of a powder actuated tool device in a gassy mine atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of this commonly utilized tool technology in the construction industry, to the underground gassy mining industry over the course of the last 5 years. Prior to June of 2002, underground gassy mining industry had attached materials such as ventilation curtains, power cables, communication cables, signage, and other materials by either manually driving individual spads or nails into the mine roof or rib or by attachment to existing roof bolt bearing plates. The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool is portable, durable, and lightweight (4.5 pounds). The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool system is powered by Hilti .27 caliber permissible explosive boosters. The energy force of the Hilti .27 booster?s acts on a captive piston principle in the Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool, that applies the setting force for the direct fastening to the individual fastener chosen for the application by the end user. Gravity sedimentation is one of the most widely used unit operations in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy. Properly selected and operated sedimentation equipment can provide probably the most economical means of concentrating solids or clarifying solutions. Because of the variety of different approaches possible, including the use of modern flocculants, it is easy to overlook the optimum approach in selecting equipment. The different types of sedimentation systems that can be used in the minerals field and the sizing methods that are currently employed will be discussed here. Sedimentation applications usually fall into two areas, clarification or thickening. While the two operations are basically similar, the difference in emphasis (a well-clarified overflow as opposed to a highly concentrated underflow) results in significant differences in testing, equipment design, and operation. Clarifiers may be merely simple settling vessels with no special features, other than ample volume to provide the detention time needed for suspended solids to settle out of the feed slurry. Or, they can be designed to employ elaborate solids-contact techniques utilizing coagulants or flocculants to achieve more rapid clarification through the growth of particle agglomerates. Thickeners also are available in a wide variety of designs, with the main differences concentrated in the design of the raking mechanism. Thickeners operating in series (continuous countercurrent decantation or CCD) are used to recover valuable solution or purify the insoluble solids. Tray thickeners are used for recovering fine particulate solids such as alumina seed, but in other applications have been supplanted largely by unit thickeners or inclined plate units. Thickeners and clarifiers sometimes are used for storage of either solids or overflow liquor, or employed as precipitating reactors, such as in desilication applications. The use of flocculants and coagulants is much more common in modern processing plants, primarily due to the reduction in capital costs rendered possible through the use of these reagents. The terms flocculant and coagulant are often used interchangeably; generally, it is understood that flocculants refer to organic, high molecular weight synthetic or natural polymers which are useful in flocculating most suspended solids, but generally are ineffective on colloidal suspensions. Coagulants refer to chemicals such as those commonly used in water treatment, alum, ferric salts, lime, etc., which are usually far more effective on colloidal solids but cannot achieve the degree of agglomeration that is possible with the polymers. In some cases, both coagulants and flocculants are used in order to achieve optimum results.

Clays for building bricks and roofing tiles in Chile are classified as common clays and ball clays, with deposits of sedimentary and residual origin, both Cenozoic in age. Deposits are known from north to south, through 11 of the 13 Chilean Administrative Regions, 18° to 39° South latitude, and from west to east, through three of Chile's main geomorphic features, namely the Coastal Plains, Coastal Range, and Intermediate Depression. Alluvial and lacustrine sedimentary common clay deposits are located in the northern and southern Intermediate Depression. The average chemical composition of clay deposits in I and I1 Regions, is 58 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 4 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, feldspar, and albite. The average chemical composition of clays in Metropolitan, VI, and VIII Regions, is 52 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 6 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are montmorillonite, quartz, and plagioclase. Residual common clay deposits occur in the Intermediate Depression and in the Coastal Range internal basins, VII, VLII, and IX Regions, and they represent surficial alteration of pumice beds and crystalline rocks. The average chemical composition of clay deposits derived from crystalline rocks is 58 percent SO2, 17 percent A1203, and 9 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, and clinochlore. Clay deposits formed from pumice beds contain 47 percent Si02, 24 percent A1203, and 10 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, feldspar, and cristobalite. Sedimentary ball clay deposits are located in the Coastal Plains and Coastal Range, VI, VII, VIII, and IX Regions, between 34" and 39" South latitude. The average chemical composition of the ball clay deposits is 51 percent ,902, 28 percent A1203, 5 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, quartz, and sericite (illite?). These clay deposits supply the Chilean building sector with over one million metric tons (mt) (1.1 million short tons [st]) of material per year. The average growth rate of clay consumption during the period 1993 through 1997 was 10 percent annually. The clays are used by both mechanized plants and handcraft facilities.

Estimating the lithologic composition of gravel deposits for aggregate quality using standard field and laboratory techniques is costly and time-consuming. As an alternative, digital geologic maps and elevation models may provide a means for predicting the lithologic composition of channel and terrace deposits. Digital geologic maps can be used to evaluate the distribution of map units: their geomorphic setting, and the physical properties of the gravel source. To test this concept, the lithologies and topography of the upper drainage basin of the Big Thompson River along the Colorado Front Range were used to examine various factors that may control the final lithologic composition of channel and terrace gravels downstream. The simplest factor is the area of each of the map units in the upper drainage basin area, which can be easily measured from the digital geologic map. The percentage of each map unit within the total area provides a estimate of the pro- portions of each map unit that might be expected to occur in the downstream gravels. Published estimates of the hardness and durability of each map unit were used to calculate physical property-weighted areas; these areas are an estimate of the potential of each unit to be eroded and transported as gravel-sized particles. The areas of each map unit at 1-kilometer intervals from the drainage basin exit point were used to calculate a distance-weighted area for each map unit. For this study, a simple inverse relationship (area/distance) was used for distance weighting, but a more complicated distance function may ultimately be required. The topographic setting of exposed rock units should exert a significant influence on whether material will move slowly or rapidly through the drainage system. Two topographic factors were examined: gradient and slope. A simple gradient between map unit occurrences and the exit point of the drainage basin was used to calculate a gradient-weighted area estimate for each map unit. The slope-weighted area estimate uses the slope steepness (in degrees) in the immediate vicinity of each map unit occurrence as a measure of the tendency of material to begin moving into the sediment transport system. The primary intent of this study was to test the concept of using digital geologic map and elevation images to estimate gravel composition, rather than actually producing a useful analysis of a drainage basin. Each of the controlling factors was examined independently to gain an understanding of the magnitude of the effect of each factor. Ultimately, a comprehensive predictive model will be constructed using a combination of the various controlling factors.

The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. There is much in common between the requirements of open-pit mining and quarrying operations. Both involve the extraction of large volumes of material from surface excavations. The principal differences are of degree: open-pit mining of materials such as coal or gold generally involves the extraction of only small volumes of 'mineral' and large volumes of waste-they are operations with very high stripping ratios, and are made viable only because of the high unit value of the extracted mineral. In quarrying operations, the unit value of the mineral - sand, aggregate, limestone, or clay - is much lower, but stripping ration Are also lower. Thus the same techniques of geological modelling, reserve estimation, and pit planning are applicable, as is shown in two examples from the British quarrying industry. In each case, a primary requirement is the definition of production volume or tonnage. Sometimes, this need may be addressed simply by the use of a survey data processing package. However, in other cases, such as the two examples addressed in this paper, of sand and clay quarries, detailed assessment of the variation of mineral grades is a vital part of the exercise, and simple volumetric modelling cannot in itself be sufficient. In these cases, a block model approach using simple logical and numerical post-processing is also required to obtain required parameters for commercial classification of the products to be extracted. Pit designs themselves may be optimised by use of algorithms such as Lerchs-Grossmann, but the value of mineral produced can be dependent on factors other than its grade in any one part of a single pit, and the 'optimised' pit itself must be considered only a good sub-optimal. Given the right degree of healthy skepticism, and a software package with sufficient flexibility to be adapted readily to the rather different requirements of the quarrying industry, there is no reason why the quarrying industry should not benefit from the many years of investment in mining software technology.

Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

The announcement of a high-grade ore intercept near Wenatchee, Chelan County, WA, by Asamera Minerals in 1983 triggered widespread interest in this old gold mining district. The district has a long history of exploration and production and was actually one of the few underground gold mines that operated in the post World War I1 years in the US. Gold occurs in a north-trending structural zone in folded and faulted Eocene arkose intruded by andesite and dacite dikes having dates in the 42 to 50 m.y. range. Ore has been mined selectively from ladder veins perpendicular to the trend, from the south end of the trend near Squilchuck Creek. These veins narrow and silicification becomes pervasive northerly where wider zones were caved later in the operation. Recent discoveries at "B" reef at the north end are also in wide zones of silicified arkose. The gold lodes originally cropped out as prominent silicified and iron-stained ridges that were described in the early days as "reefs." The early discoveries were made in out- crop about a hundred years ago, and two claims, the Gold King and Macbeth lodes, covering the most prominent out- crops on the north side of Squilchuck Creek, were staked in 1885 and patented shortly thereafter. A five stamp mill was erected in 1894, but failed to liberate gold for amalgamation. The two patented claims were acquired in 1934 by J. Keegan, who carried out limited exploration and shipped small amounts of flux ore to Tacoma during the next few years. There was no substantial exploration or development of the claims, however, for several years after that time, and ownership of the claims eventually passed to a series of trusts administered by a bank in Seattle.

Native sulfur deposits in Poland occur in Upper Miocene strata on the northern (platform) border of the Carpathian foredeep. Systematic exploration since 1953 has resulted in the discovery of seven stratifom-stratibound sulfur-bearing limestone deposits that together contain about 0.6 billion tons of demonstrated sulfur reserves and about 0.5 billion tons of inferred and hypothetical resources. One open pit and three Frasch mines are currently in operation; another is under construction and one has been abandoned. Total production is about five million tons per year from ore containing on the average about 25% sulfur. Field, isotope, and micropaleontological data indicate that the sulfur-bearing limestone was formed through the bacterial reduction of gypsum in the presence of methane discharged from source beds and traps in the Carpathian foredeep. Subsequent recrystallization of the sulfur-bearing limestone, tectonic activity, jointing, karstification, and partial leaching of the sulfur has transformed the sulfur deposits and has altered the thickness and content of the sulfur-bearing strata, and their porosity and permeability, affecting the productivity and water consumption of the sulfur wells. Caputerized borehole logging techniques and geostatistical reserve estimates are used in mine planning. Great environmental impact constrains the development of sulfur mines.

The Meikle Mine uses long-hole open stoping and cut-and-fill methods with backfill as the primary ground support technique. The mine operates at 2,858 tonnes per day (3,150 tpd) and has sustained operation in excess of 3,175 tonnes per day (3,500 tpd). Consistent backfill production is critical in achieving these mining rates. The heart of the system is a 7.65 cubic meter (10-cyd) horizontal shaft ribbon mixer located 328 m (1,075 ft) underground. System control is through several PLC's, allowing for a high degree of automation and process flexibility. Aggregate feed is routed 257 m (842 A) through vertical drop pipes in the ventilation shaft, a rockbox, transfer raises, and then into either of two raisebored storage silos. The aggregate is crushed mine waste, nominally 70% 3.8 cm x 1.0 cm (1-1/2"x 3/8") and 30% -1.0 cm (- 3/8"). The binder is routed through a vertical borehole, surge bins, and transfer raises. The binder is a mixture of Type II cement and fly ash. Two primary manufactured fill designs are produced: a high strength mix for stopes which will be undercut; and a low strength mix for stopes with only rib exposure. The high strength target is 5.5 Mpa (800psi) unconfined compressive strength in test cylinders. The low strength target is 2.8 Mpa (400 psi). The systim has allowed consistent achievement of these targets, while experience has allowed reduced costs and increased efficiencies. Fill placement is through 6.1 cubic meter (8 cyd) LHD's dumping into stopes. Specific sills and cut-and-fill drifts are jammed to the back. System enhancements have included colloidal mixers for cemented waste slurry placement and transfer raises for sending manufactured fill to the lower levels of the mine.

After World War I the character of my mining life changed completely. Before then adventure had been almost continuous but after the war there was lots of staying in one place, almost routine, between adventures. This was fortunate, as the life of a mining engineer is a wandering one at best, and it makes being married and raising a family a dubious enterprise. It would have been quite out of the question with the life I led before I got married at the end of the war The new sort of life made the "beaconing of adventure" intermittent. There were often long stays at home between wanderings which was fortunate as it changed the continuity of these memories. I must briefly summarize accounts of the more or less routine periods and concentrate on the occasional exciting episodes between. After a long visit with friends in Berkeley, Dorothy and I left for Arizona and three days at the Grand Canyon that were nearly too much for both of us. One beautiful day we started a short walk down the Bright Angel Trail. It was such a lovely bracing day that we kept on walking and enjoying the views until, just after noon, we reached the Colorado River. We were the only ones in sight so to enjoy the sunshine to the full we both had a good swim in the swiftly flowing river. So far, everything was wonderful. But when we started to climb back up the trail, rising nearly 6000 ft in ten miles we soon found that we had counted too much on our youth and endurance. We had to rest every few hundred feet and it seemed as though we would never reach the top. It was eight o'clock in the evening when we finally staggered into our room and collapsed. On the way to the Canyon I had seen John Greenway and Dr. Ricketts in Santa Barbara and they had little idea what would happen to them or to me. Before resuming his position as general manager of Calumet and Arizona and New Cornelia, Greenway must recover from the effects of the gas he had suffered in the war. Dr. Ricketts

The HILTI OneStep rockbolt was implemented for roadway development in German deep coal mines in 2004. The development by HILTI Company is based on a technical joint venture with RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG. The technical development of a One-Step bolting system was required for weak strata conditions at the roadway development face. Standard resin bolting has reached the limit of performance when boreholes are squeezed and cannot be filled with capsules. In some cases the heading face is brittle and requires additional support for installation of the bolts and a person working immediately next to the borehole. In the post-World War II years, metals analysts and statisticians have tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) industrial production (IP) growth rates, Williamson said. This was because the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. "However, the correlation was exaggerated," he said. During times of expanding IP growth, metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked to reduce costs. Nonetheless, he said, a reasonable correlation could be painted between IP growth over the longer term and metal demand. "Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war, it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world's IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, lately including Japan," Williamson said. The so-called "developing world" had been of little consequence. The Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities that, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers, he said. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated, Williamson said. It does not take into account the worldwide political changes that have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China. "It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs," he said, including the western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are attempting to satisfy the expectations of the great mass of the world's poorer people, Williamson said. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America, have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. "Now, with free market forces at work, their aspirations will start to be met." Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate. The production of raw materials has to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world. It will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries.
