"INTRODUCTION The metallurgical research program of the Bureau of Mines has been somewhat disorganized, but generally advanced by the increased activities of the war period. The present report is for the purpose of summarizing the work of the Bureau in this field for the past 15 years and indicating its future plan.Fifteen years ago the Bureau turned from its pioneer work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking to an emphasis on raking a pure steel synthetically, rather than by refining, that is, :producing each of the steel 'constituents in the pure state and combining them by simple melting. Such a procedure permits the use of less high-grade ores, not only of iron, but of the ferroalloy metals, such as manganese and chromium,This program has led to extensive work on iron-ore concentration, agglomeration, reducibility of ores and agglomerates, direct reduction of iron ores and concentrates by a wide variety of processes; special refining processes for iron, the production of pure mangenese, chromium, and cobalt from low-grade ores by electrolytic processes, the production of ferrochromium, ferronickel, and ferronickel-cobalt from low-grade domestic ores, and the development of many special alloys to effectively use the new products.The status of the work in each of these fields and the future program of work, together with a bibliography of papers and patents by the Bureau staff on each of these subjects, are given."

Under the requirement to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuelcell vehicles, a broadscoped project was initiated to quantify the costs associated with operating fuelcell vehicles and diesel vehicles. While ventilation savings are clearly an advantage for the former, a complete and detailed analysis of this and other operational and capital cost elements was undertaken in order to provide the mining industry with factual information in considering the changeover from one technology to another. This article outlines the results of the investigations to date defining the costs/benefits associated with: capital purchases, operations (electrical/diesel, mine air heating fuel, ventilation, openings, surface and underground infrastructure, maintenance, labour, etc.), delivery of energy, regulatory obligations, and mine production. Considerations are given to the type and size of a mining operation, the depth, and location in North America. Significant ventilation power, equipment and infrastructure savings are possible with the application of fuelcells for shallower mine applications. At depth, where heat is an issue, there is a reduction in benefit. Specific qualifiers such as minimum air velocities, dust dilution, shaft and heating system velocity limits must be considered on an individual mine basis. While the capital cost for fuelcell mining equipment is currently higher than diesel versions, the high cost of fuelcells is anticipated to be reduced significantly in the near future with the intensification of manufacturing. In either case the operational savings would probably be sufficient to balance the supplementary capitalization costs. A comprehensive cost-benefit report will be issued in the near future.

How will phosphate producers in southeastern Idaho fare with growing governmental regulations and environmentalism of the late 1970's? With a similarity that is reminiscent of the battles between the coal industry and environmental-conservation groups earlier in the decade, Idaho's future growth and a nation's need for phosphate fertilizer products remain uncertain. The catalyst that brought the issue to the forefront was the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) addressing the development of phosphate resources in southeastern Idaho. Although the final EIS was published in August 1977, resolution of rational and orderly growth in this potentially vital region remains stifled as Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andrus virtually "sits" on it.

"This paper evaluates the effect of grind size on the flotation performance of a platinum ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, in South Africa. The study was conducted on the Mintek Flotation Pilot Plant Facility, located in Johannesburg, and represented a thorough evaluation of the application of the flotation modelling methodology developed jointly by the University of Cape Town and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the University of Queensland through the AMIRA P9 Project. A simulation model of the pilot plant data was successfully implemented, providing a set of circuit modelling parameters that appeared to be both consistent and well correlated to measurable characteristics of the ore and the pilot circuit operating conditions. The findings indicate that the methodology that was used could well provide a useful framework for developing optimisation criteria for industrial flotation circuits in combination with appropriate feed grind size and regrind size targets.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognised that the size distribution of an ore is one of the most important factors in the determination of the performance of a flotation process. It therefore follows that the optimisation of a flotation plant cannot be considered without due recognition of the interdependence of this process with the process of comminution. There are numerous qualitative guidelines for the selection of an optimum grind target for a particular operation. Mineralogical analysis can readily provide information on liberation as a function of grind, and the desirable particle size range for optimum mineral flotation is well established in both theory and practice (see for example Trahar, 198 1). For some operations, meeting these two criteria simultaneously is relatively simple. For the majority of operations, such mineralogically “easy” deposits, if they ever existed, have long been exhausted, and the optimum grind represents a highly complex compromise between liberation and overgrinding of both desirable minerals and gangue. This is particularly true for circuits that include regrind stages, where both primary and secondary (and sometime even tertiary) grind targets must be specified. As has been pointed out in a recent paper by Bazin and Hodouin (2001), there is little or no information in the literature to assist plant engineers in the selection of optimum grind targets for complex ore deposits, so current practice is primarily based on rules-of-thumb and experience. This problem is further compounded by the fact that once grind targets have been selected for a particular operation, the assessment and adjustment of these targets based on plant surveys is extremely difficult, time consuming and expensive, and is often not attempted unless the plant significantly underperforms relative to expectation. It is therefore clear that the development of a practical quantitative approach to this problem is a high priority for flotation research and development studies."

Power Decks are voids created in the bottom of the borehole through the use of a suspended Super Plug. Explosive energy is started downward at initiation creating high pressures which find relief at the comers of the borehole cylinder in the bottom of the hole. This relief creates a horizontal break to the neighboring boreholes - the same effect as presplitting. This “presplit” represents a change of mass to.the explosive energy,and it is reflected upward in the more efficient form of tensile waves. This provides better use of the explosive energy than compression waves. This technique has created a new way of looking at the ways that explosive energy is transported through the rock mass.

The novel technology of phytoremediation embraces plant accumulation processes for the cleanup of toxic heavy metals and organic chemicals. Several plant species have been identified that are excellent hyperaccumulators of a number of heavy metals, e.g., Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) and Thlaspe caerulescens (Alpine pennycress). Other speciesincluding Myriophyllum brasiliense(Parrot?s feather), Salixsp. (willow), and Popullussp. (poplar) have also demonstrated phytoremediating abilities.

An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. Platinum group metals are extracted almost exclusively in South Africa from three very different zones in the Bushveld Igneous Complex, called the Plat, Merensky, and the UG-2 reefs. The Plat reef is currently being exploited only by Anglo American Platinum, whereas the Merensky reef is exploited by them, Impala Platinum, Northam, and Lonplats. The UG-2 reef, on the other hand, is also processed by these producers, but Kroondal and Barplats have operations that exclusively treat ore from this reef. At present the extraction of pgms from ores in South Africa follows the traditional route of upgrading to a concentrate in a minerals processing circuit, further upgrading to a matte in a smelter, and final upgrading and separation of the individual metals in a refinery. Thus all operations that extract pgms require a minerals processing circuit, the design and performance of which is a topic of much interest, as it is a poorly understood and not a very efficient process in relative terms, compared to the other processes. Recoveries across the minerals processing circuit of between 75 and 90% are the norm.

[During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]

The block cutting machine is one of the most important noise sources in the stone processing factories. In this study, the assessability of the noise from the block cutting machines in the stone processing factories using the P-wave velocity was investigated. The noise levels of some block cutting machines were firstly measured during the cutting of the three different rocks. Then, core samples of the same rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. A conversion factor was obtained by dividing the site noise levels by the laboratory noise levels. Then, thirty seven different rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. The P-wave velocity of rock samples were also measured in the laboratory. A strong relation between the laboratory noise levels and the P-wave velocity was found. The noise level from the block cutting machines can be assessed using the derived relation and the conversion factor.

Longwall coal mine operators in the US are required to ventilate multi-panel longwall districts but may have little or no knowledge about what happens to the ventilation air between the inlet evaluation points (IEPs), bleeder evaluation points (BEPs), and bleeder fans. The effectiveness of bleeder performance can directly influence the ability of a ventilation system to remove and dilute coal bed methane emissions. Consequently, the performance of coal mine bleeders is an important aspect of underground worker safety. U.S. coal mining stakeholders have acknowledged their belief that the T- junction split at the longwall face tailgate corner is very important in controlling the distribution of ventilation air. The percentage of air directed inby towards the bleeders and bleeder fan and outby to the submains is often not well-defined and can vary over the life of a longwall panel. To obtain direct measurements of bleeder performance, a tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), was released into the intake air stream along the panline of active longwall panels and in the bleeder/gob ventilation air inlets of an inactive panel. Tracer gas sampling was conducted underground using tube bundles attached to permissible vacuum pumps in the gateroads, former gateroads, and bleeders. Surface tracer gas monitoring was also conducted from operating gob boreholes and from bleeder fans. Testing was performed on multiple longwall panels which included various phases of longwall development and variable path lengths of ventilation air transport to bleeder fan installations. The applied methodology defines and describes coal bed gas pathways, rates, and volumes of movement at the bleeder/gob interfaces, and indicates flow rates for air/gas mixtures within these gobs. These findings are reported for three stages of longwall extraction using direct field-based measurements. Changes in the T-junction ventilation air distribution over the life of a longwall panel and its variable effect on panel ventilation airflow are discussed. These findings will assess the effectiveness of commonly applied ventilation strategies for improving air distribution and ventilation controls to meet statutory requirements and to achieve the desired ventilation patterns through multiple phases of longwall panel extraction.

ABSTRACT: The safe design of excavations created in a fractured rock mass is of paramount importance in rock engineering. Depending on the nature of the stress regime acting on an excavation, and the associated deformational behaviour of the rock mass surrounding the excavation, a number of potential failure mechanisms exist. These involve a combination of shear failure on existing joints, extension of critically oriented joints and propagation of new fractures through previously intact rock. Conventional numerical codes usually adopt either a continuum or discontinuum approach; this often results in significant over simplification and kinematic limitations particularly when modelling complex rock mass behaviour in the close vicinity of excavations. This paper describes the results from several case examples using a combined finite element-discrete element code, ELFEN that incorporates a crack propagation mode. Through the use of selected rock engineering examples, the authors demonstrate the potential of the code in the realistic simulation of complex rock failure both in underground and surface excavation applications. RÉSUMÉ: La conception sûre des excavations créées dans une masse de roche fracturée est d'importance primordiale dans la géotechnique. Selon la nature du régime d'effort autour d’une excavation, et le déformation associé de la masse de roche autour de l'excavation, il exsite un certain nombre de mécanismes potentiels d'échec. Ceux-ci comportent une combinaison d'échec de cisaillement sur les joints existants, la prolongation des joints d’orientation critique et la propagation de nouvelles ruptures dans la roche précédemment intacte. Les codes numériques conventionnels adoptent habituellement l’approche, soit d’un continuum, soit de discontinuum; ceci a souvent comme conséquence une sursimplification significative et les limitations cinématiques en particulier en modelant le comportement complexe de la masse de roche très proche des excavations. Cet article décrit les résultats de plusieurs exemples de cas en utilisant un code qui s’agit d’une combination d’élément discret et d'élément fini, ELFEN qui incorpore un mode de propagation de fissure. Par l'utilisation des exemples choisis géotechniques, les auteurs démontrent le potentiel du code dans la simulation réaliste de l'échec complexe de roche pour les applications aux excavations soit au fond soit à l’extérieure. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das sichere Design der Aushöhlungen, die in einer zerbrochenen Felsenmasse verursacht werden, ist vom paramount Wert in der Felsentechnik. Abhängig von der Natur des Druckregimes, das auf einer Aushöhlung und dem dazugehörigen deformationalen Verhalten der Felsenmasse umgibt die Aushöhlung fungiert, bestehen eine Anzahl von möglichen Ausfalleinheiten. Diese beziehen eine Kombination des Scherausfalls auf vorhandenen Verbindungen, Verlängerung der kritisch orientierten Verbindungen und Ausbreitung der neuen Brüche durch vorher intakten Felsen. Herkömmliche numerische Codes nehmen normalerweise entweder ein kontinuum oder discontinuum Annäherung an; dieses ergibt häufig bedeutende Übervereinfachung und kinematische Beschränkungen, besonders wenn es kompliziertes Felsenmasseverhalten in der Nähe der Aushöhlungen modelliert. The Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co. Ltd. was commissioned in 1972. Since start up, the anode production capacity has increased from 101,000 tpy to 290,000 tpy, as a result of the application of continuous improvements at each phase of the expansion projects. The Tamano Smelter had developed several innovations, including the original coke combustion technology for Flash Smelting Furnace operations (T-FSF), and has also been able to extend the operating life of the Peirce-Smith converters. This paper will present several improvements implemented at the Tamano Smelter, and will discuss relevant P-S converter operation.

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. When it comes to structuring major mining contracts, the two most widely adopted formats are æmeasure and valueÆ and æcost-plusÆ. A problem with both of these formats is the difficultly of aligning the objectives of the mining company with those of the contractor to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. An alternative contractual arrangement is for the mining company to enter into an Alliance arrangement with the contractor, linking remuneration to mine performance across a range of targets. These targets can change over time as operational requirements change.   The aims of this paper are to: +        outline alternative types of mining contracts, as well as their strengths and pitfalls; +        describe the philosophy behind the Alliance contract at Newmont Waihi GoldÆs Favona underground mine; and +        identify some of the keys to success and pitfalls to avoid when implementing an Alliance.

A system to continuously measure the concentration of radon in mine ventilating air has been developed and tested in a uranium mine. In use, the air/radon mixture to be monitored is pumped through filters into a scintillation cell where nuclear decay of the radon produces flashes of light. These are electronically counted, giving a quantitative measure of the radon present. Air is continuously drawn from the mine atmosphere into the radon sensor box. This air sample passes through two filters into the detector cell as shown in the schematic diagram. A portion of the radon in the detector cell will experience nuclear decay, producing polomium 218 and an alpha particle. The alpha particles from the fraction that decays strike a zinc-sulfide coating on the inside wall of the cell and produce flashes of light. These enter a photo-multiplier tube which records each flash as an electrical pulse. An amplifier increases the voltage of each pulse, allowing electronic screening to remove noise and other undesirable pulses. The remaining pulses are counted by a conventional data acquisition system.

Earth resistivity surveys using the Wenner electrode configuration were made in unmined areas and reclaimed spoils at three surface lignite mines in western North Dakota. The study sites were the Center, Indian Head, and Falkirk Mines. Automatic interpretation of the curves was accomplished with the method of Zohdy and Bisdorf (1975). Overburden materials become more homogeneous with respect to resistivity during the mining and reclamation process. The spoils curves show localized hetero-geneities probably related to discontinuous moisture content variations in the spoils. Consistent resistivity differences in spoils occur between mines with over-burdens of different mineralogic compositions. Groundwater chemical composition in terms of total-dissolved-solids (TDS) is inversely correlated (r=-0.61) with apparent resistivity at the 80-foot spacing from a survey centered at a piezometer screened near the base of the spoils. Better inverse correlation is probably pre-vented by high variability in TDS within the spoils groundwater. A useful predictive relationship may be the plot of mean apparent resistivity at the 80-foot spacing for ar. entire mine against mean TDS for all wells in spoils at that mine. Data from more mines are needed to test the hypothesis.
