Pan American Silver Huaron ha decidido invertir U$S 4.3 millones en infraestructura de ventilación para la ejecución de chimeneas tipo Raise Boring que se ejecutarán en los diferentes circuitos de la mina, y que permitirán dar sostenibilidad al minado, profundizar las rampas hacia niveles inferiores y expandir los horizontes de la mina. Con los nuevos circuitos operando, la mina Huaron habrá reducido las resistencias de los circuitos de ventilación, por lo tanto, podrá trabajar posteriormente en controlar y reducir el consumo de energía por ventilación.

This report presents the results of a study for the Bureau of Mines to compare loan terms for non-fuel mineral projects in developing countries, from various International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and from private sector commercial sources. The study compares IFI and commercial loan terms for seven mineral projects in developing countries. The International Financial Institutions represented are: ? International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) ? International Finance Corporation (IFC) ? Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) ? Asian Development Bank (ADB) ? International Monetary Fund (IMF) In addition, the costs of financing for these mineral projects were compared with the costs of long-term debt to the five largest U.S. mineral producers.

Preparedness is an important element of any underground mine's strategic plan in dealing with an unexpected event, such as a fire. A fully implemented fire preparedness and response plan is essential in reducing the probability and seriousness of a mine fire. This report describes the development of an underground coal mine fire preparedness and response checklist (MFPRC). The checklist is a data collection instrument for profiling both the fire prevention and response capabilities of a mine site and usually requires 3 to 4 days to complete. The checklist encompasses conditions, procedures, and equipment that have frequently been identified as the primary or contributing causes of underground coal mine fires. At least 1 day is needed underground to evaluate the water system. This entails measurements of water flows and pressures at fire hydrants, and water throw distances of fire hose and nozzles at several locations (mains and branch lines). A few of the other topics that are discussed with mine personnel include detection and suppression systems, combustible materials, mine rescue and fire brigades, and firefighting equipment. The MFPRC was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Cyprus Amax, Twenty mile Coal Co. (Oak Creek, CO), the checklist was field tested and further refined. Additional field tests were conducted at several other operating coal mines.

Dry weather since the third week in January has set back any prospects for an early increase in hydroelectric power in the Pacific Northwest, according to The Bonneville Power Administration. The 25% cutback made in July probably will not be restored in March or April. Noranda Aluminum, Inc., increased its price for 99.5% aluminum ingot from 66 cents to 70 cents per pound effective March 1, 1980. Revere Copper & Brass, Inc., also -increased its price for primary aluminum from 66.0 cents to 70.0 cents per pound effective February 1. Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. raised its international price for 99.5% primary aluminum from 72.6 cents to 82.6 cents per pound, c. i. f., effective February 26 on new orders and on shipments from March 15.

Zinc or, a zinc refinery in South Africa, uses oxygen enrichment of up to 26% O2 in its fluidizing air to increase concentrate-throughput in its fluidized bed roasters. The aim of the study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining concentrate throughput rates and calcine quality. A laboratory scale fluidized roaster was used to determine the strength and oxidation kinetics of suitable micro-pellets. The strength of the pellets was determined by the extent of attrition during roasting. It was found that micro-pelletization decreases the fines in the feed to the roasters; the ?500 µm fraction decreased from 87% to 10%. The micro-pelletized particles do break down during roasting, which increases the -500 µm fraction to 31%. The general morphologies of the roasted particles are similar to those found by previous workers. Micro-pelletized concentrate particles require more time than non-pelletized concentrate particles to oxidize in the roasting step, although this is less than the mean residence time of the Zincor roasters. Roasting micro-pellets in O2-enriched fluidizing air increased the reaction rate.

Cajamarca es uno de los departamentos con mayor historia y presencia del sector minero a nivel nacional; sin embargo, en la región solo el 22,9% de la población adulta accede a créditos formales en el sistema financiero (INCORE, 2022). Las mujeres tienen más restricciones que los hombres para acceder al crédito formal. Respondiendo a esta problemática; desde el 2008, en colaboración con el Banco de Desarrollo del Perú (COFIDE), la Asociación los Andes de Cajamarca (ALAC) fundación empresarial de Minera Yanacocha, viene implementando un proyecto de educación financiera que apoya a las comunidades locales a optimizar la gestión de sus ingresos y ahorros.

Sin embargo, no puede ser empleado cuando un patron de voladura mal diseñado, ya que se genera un descontrol sobre la energía liberada. En este sentido, el presente texto describe el empleo de la prospección fotogramétrica estéreo y los sistemas de prospección de pozos en una operación de voladura en la cantera brasileña Incopel.

A raíz de una mayor demanda de horas hombre para cumplir con el mantenimiento de la flota de camiones de acarreo de Antamina, se puso en marcha la optimización de la gestión del mantenimiento preventivo (PM), cuyas estrategias principales eran la reducción del tiempo de parada de los camiones por PM y la extensión del intervalo de frecuencia de los PM. Así, se logró extender la frecuencia del PM de cada 250 horas a cada 500 horas y se logró reducir el tiempo de parada mensual por PM de 21.0 a 10.5 h por camión, sin afectar la confiabilidad.

In connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on utilization of Cuban lateritic ores, a comprehensive review was made of the chemical literature on nickel and cobalt. Initially, the review had as its objective the selection, from the voluminous literature dealing with the chemistry of these two metals, of only those references to reactions that were especially pertinent, or at least closely related, to the field of extractive metallurgy. Later, the coverage was extended to include references to the techniques and plant applications of extractive metallurgical procedures for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. In this report, the period from January 1929 to July 1955 has been covered, as it seemed logical that recent literature should be of greatest value. This cutoff date was established in order that the bibiliography could be issued at an early date, inasmuch as currently much work is in progress on the lateritic ores. Later, a supplement will be prepared extending the coverage to about 1900.

Entering June, U. S. producer pricing of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot was divided at 53-57 cents per pound. The Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. took the initiative and raised its June 1 ingot values by 4 cents to 57 cents. Consolidated Aluminum Corp. announced plans to increase ingot prices by 4.5 cents per pound to 57.5 cents per pound effective May 15. Dealers increased their May ingot quotes by 1.5-2 cents to 50-50.5 cents. CADMIUM While producers in the United States kept May cadmium at $2.25-$2.50, dealers increased their quotes by 15-30 cents to as high as $2.15.

La planificación estratégica de una operación minera debe estar en constante evolución para hacer frente a escenarios cambiantes, y en ocasiones atípicos, como variaciones agresivas en el precio de los metales, tecnologías emergentes, modificaciones a estándares y normas legales para desarrollar el negocio minero, entre otras. Es entonces necesario implementar innovaciones revolucionarias, en lugar de solo mejoras constantes (Hammer, 2004). Lograr esta mencionada innovación operacional genera impactos de mayor magnitud en la cultura operativa, trayendo consigo la reducción de exposición a peligros, incremento en uso de energías limpias y reducción de huella de carbono, cambio en la estrategia de operación, reducción de costos operativos.

En ese sentido, el presente artículo señala el rebajamiento del márgen donde se evalúa los costos, fijos y variables, con relación a la velocidad de minado. Asimismo se realiza un análisis de la distribución de costos y su significado al determinar la combinación más económica de los factores ley y toneladas de producción en una operación minera dada.

This report is mainly concerned with the modification and development of a users manual for the Open-Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) developed at Penn State. Model Modifications included the introduction of a free-format input, the application of a Weibull random generator, facilities to stochastically simulate shovel-dragline operations, and routines to increase the flexibility in making truck assignments. At the same time, core storage requirements and execution times were minimized and all P.S.U. conventions were removed to allow operation on other computing systems.

El presente trabajo revisa el panorama sobre el proceso de clasificación y explotación de los recursos minerales no metálicos en el Perú, con el objeto de promover el desarrollo de la minería no metálica. Los metales de origen mineral se clasifican en cuatro grupos: metales en estado nativo y minerales metálicos, combustibles minerales, aguas subterráneas y un gran número de sustancias minerales que no están comprendidas en ninguna de las categorías mencionadas, y que constituyen el grupo de los no metíllicos, llamados también minerales y rocas industriales. Asimismo, se muestra la clasificación establecida por el código de minería (combustibles minerales, minerales industriales, refractarios, material de construcción y minerales no metálicos diversos). Luego se describe el valor de la producción nacional de minerales no metálicos, como la situación actual de la minería no metálica en el Perú. Concluyendo que el Estado debe priorizar la prospección de minerales no metálicos de acorde a la importancia del desarrollo del país, asi como estimular la iniciativa privada para el descubrimiento de nuevos depósitos de dichas sustancias comercialmente explotables.

Reports for the calendar year 1923 that have been transmitted to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior by mine officials of the various coal-producing States show that accidents in and around the coal mines resulted in the death of 2,452 men. The output of coal during the year, as reported to the United States Geo- logical Survey, was 641,476,000 tons; hence the fatality rate per million tons was 3.82 as compared with 4.15 for 1922, a decline of about 8 per cent. The average rate for the decade ending with 1922 was 4.11. This reduction of 8 per cent in the fatal-accident rate per million tons is equivalent to the saving of 210 lives--that is, had the fatality rate of 1922 continued through 1923 the number of lives lost would have been 210 more than they actually were. Not only was there a net reduction in the fatality rate from all causes combined, but each of the main causes of coal-mine fatalities also showed a decline. Falls of roof and coal, which generally account for nearly half of all deaths in coal mines, were responsible for 1,158 fatalities in 1923, which represents a rate of 1.81 per million tons as compared with 1.90 in 1922. (See Table 2.) Haulage accidents underground usually cause about 17 per cent of all fatalities, and the reports for 1923 show that 413 deaths were due to this cause, indi- cating a rate of 0.64 per million tons, as against 0.71 for the previous year. Gas and dust explosions killed 372 men, the fatality rate being 0.58; the rate for 1922 was 0.65. Seventy-five deaths were due to electricity, for which class of accidents the fatality rate per million tons was 0.12 as compared with 0.16 the year before. Powder and other explosives caused 114 deaths, representing a rate of 0.18 as compared with 0.19 for 1922. Of the 2,452 fatal accidents during the year, 2,249 occurred under- ground, 46 in shafts, and 157 on the surface. Research objectives were to determine the reasons for erratic behavior of semisilica horizontal zinc retorts in service; to investigate potential corrective measures including the possible utilization of more refractory materials in the retort body; and to delineate laboratory tests suitable for process control in the manufacture of retorts. Correlation of laboratory test results and data supplied by the cooperating smelters indicated that structural failures due to thermal shock and laminations in the retort body are largely responsible for the erratic behavior of horizontal zinc retorts in service. The most promising modifications made in the retort body and evaluated on a laboratory scale included finer grinding of the plastic clay fraction, substitution of mullite grog for calcined fire clay and grain alumina for silica, plus the use of an organic binder. Lamination-free extrusions having excellent thermal shock resistance were prepared from a mixture composed of 50 percent low-silica Missouri plastic clay through 100 mesh, 25 percent mullite grog through 6 mesh, and 25 percent alumina through 100 mesh. The mix was pugged under 28-inch vacuum with 1 percent ligno sulfonate binder in 12 percent tempering water. Laboratory tests suitable for process control in the manufacture of retorts are described.

The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down production at the remaining two potlines at its Point Comfort, Texas primary aluminum smelter due to the increased costs of natural gas. Total capacity of the facility, which had been partially closed since 1976, was 185,000 tons per year representing 3.6 percent of current capacity in the United States. There were practically no price movements in March on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, with producers at 53¢ per pound and dealers, 48¢-48.5¢. BISMUTH The March selling position of U.S. producer metal was held at $3.50 per pound. In contrast, east coast dealers and traders adjusted their quotes from $2.55-$2.60 to a wider range of $2.40-$2.60.

It's not news to you that the United States is highly vulnerable to potential problems in supply of critical and strategic metals, and that these metals - chromium, for example - are employed in important bearing alloys. It's also not news to you that there is a significant challenge to improve durability and life of bearing systems which contribute to conservation as well as productivity. The objectives of this workshop are to identify available technologies and opportunities for new technologies in conservation, substitution, and displacement of critical and strategic metals in bearing systems. These considerations are among the most viable options for reducing vulnerability to a cutoff of chromium and other critical metals and action should be taken to identify and develop those technologies now rather than after a crisis is upon us.
