"This paper introduces the operational concept and the description of a multi-site Remote Support Center for knowledge management and long-term process performance improvement.This centralized Support Center provides real-time monitoring of open-platform process automation systems, and on-line access to process data and control applications information for multiple sites.Considering that process automation is a key enabler to business performance improvement, sustaining effective performance benefits over time becomes essential. Unfortunately, changes in manufacturing process dynamics, technology obsolescence and in plant operational practices cause the control strategies to lose their effectiveness over time unless their performance is periodically evaluated, and if required, tuned to the new process conditions.A new concept in process automation is proposed through the addition of a new control loop based on performance analysis methodology which is intended to feedback process and automation operation information to system and process specialists, allowing for continuous manufacturing process improvement and sustainable production benefits through effectual control strategies.A remote support center can play a key role in the delivery of such services, by providing the base platform from which a comprehensive process overview and a centralized knowledge database can be executed and additionally, as an enabler for plant operational practices change.INTRODUCTIONA Benchmark on Automation Level in Copper Concentrators conducted by AMIRA in 2004, reported that the Codelco divisions scored below their peers in several categories.Codelco had thereafter been looking for a new automation concept, and had focused on process automation as a key enabler for process manufacturing and business performance improvement. The final decision was to create a strategic alliance with a world-class automation technology provider.The traditional approach based on isolated automation solutions/projects, showed that the control strategies benefits were decreasing progressively over time, because of the on-going need to adapt the control models to the ever-changing process conditions and different plant operational practices. Another consequence of this traditional approach was the wide variety of technologies and automation systems deployed in the different plant sites, with no common automation standards, and with low opportunities to transfer knowledge or practices."

Two of the most critical concerns a blaster faces today are airblast and flyrock. Airblast, sometimes called noise or overpressure, can cause damage to neighboring structures, especially windows. It also is the cause for many vibration complaints. The human sense of hearing is often more acute to identifying source than the sense of touch. When a blast occurs, the airblast is what identifies the event. The vibration that may be felt is then associated with the airblast. Vibrations of greater magnitude, such as passing trucks or construction work on the house, go unnoticed because their sounds are familiar or expected. Flyrock is the number one killer and cause of damage. Elasting laws provide limits for these two concerns. Failure to comply may result in fines, closing of the operation, and even prison. Airblast and flyrock originate from two distinct areas, the open face and the bench surface. Each of these areas is addressed in the detailed proven procedures that follow, and if used by the blaster in conjunction with his own blasting knowledge, a sound blasting plan can be developed to minimize the occurrence of airblast and flyrock.

Goldfields (Tasmania) Limited operates a small, high-grade underground gold mine on the West Coast of Tasmania, 30 kilometres north of Queenstown. The main orebody, Zone 96, was discovered in 1989, with major development work commencing in 1993. The mine was officially opened in July, 1996. Initial production came from a shallow orebody known as the Sill Zone, some 50 - 150 m below surface, which was accessed by a 1 in 8 decline. Zone 96 lies between 350 m and 550 m below the surface and is accessed by a 402 m deep, 3.2 m diameter internal shaft from the collar level located 100 m below surface. The main ore extraction system in Zone 96 is mechanised cut and fill, using high density paste fill. Run of mine ore and waste are hoisted in a single 5.5 tonne overturning skip, then trucked from the underground collar to the gold plant ROM pad or waste dump, respectively. Ground conditions in the mine vary with orientation and proximity to major faults. The gold is contained in a sequence of strongly altered volcanic rocks adjacent to the Henty Fault. Most of the gold is contained in massive quartz, ranging in width from 0.5 m to 7 m, which has been subjected to substantial faulting. Average mineable grade is about 27 grams gold per tonne. Ore reserves in 1996 proved an initial mine life of approximately 4.5 years at 90 000 ounces gold per annum, with significant potential for additional resources from extensions to Zone 96 and adjacent zones. The lease is located in an environmentally sensitive area and a very high standard of environmental management is an essential part of the operation. This paper describes the relevant aspects of mining at Henty including grade control, ground support, backfill placement and environmental management.

THE metallurgical industry has purchased more than sixty per cent of the industrial gas cleaning equipment installed in Canada. This includes cyclonic collectors, scrubbers, cloth filters and Cottrell Precipitators. These are the principal types of equipment which are used commercially for the cleaning of gases which result from the processing of iron, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, gold, gypsum and aluminum ores. The recovered dust, which usually contains metal values, is returned to the process. The cost of the equipment is thus economically justified. This is in contrast to other industries, such as those involving steam power generation, asbestos, cement and lime production, where, though dust collection equipment is extensively used, it is installed primarily for nuisance abatement. Communities are becoming more and more conscious of air pollution, new and more stringent legislation is being enacted, and, for other than economic reasons the smelting industry will eventually be required to install more efficient gas cleaning equipment. The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

A Iaboratory drilling rig has been devised and placed in operation which permits the application of hydrostatic, terrastatic, and formation pore pressures to a rock sample for drilling under controlled conditions. Calibrated rests of this equipment in-dicate qualitative agreerment with field results on the effect of weight on bit, rotary speed, and rate of circ~~lation on drilling rate. Tests under pressure, using water and air as the drilling fluids, indicate that when drilling saturated limestone samples, a pressure differential between hydrostatic and formation pressure is the only pressure which affects drilling rate. A differential in either direction causes a reduction in rate, but the same diflerential from the wellbore into the formation causes the greater reduction. Also, in lime.stone, air favorably affected drilling rote only when compared to water at high hydrostatic pressurre, all other conditions remaining constant. Large increases in drilling rate with air could be obtained in the laboratory only while drilling a shale, which offered a limited permeability to nitrogen and which could be drilled with a differential from the formation into the wellbore. In general, the magnitude of the changes due to the pressure effect were small compared to changes in drilling rate obtainable by changing either bit weight or rotary speed. INTRODUCTION In the course of Humble's drilling research program, the desirability of investigating several factors which lend themselves to laboratory rather than field study became obvious. Principal reasons for this are the expense involved in field studies and the difficulty of exercising the required degree of control. Of primary importance are investigations of the effect of fluid pressure on rock rate, the effect of pressure on rock drillability, and a study of the fundamental mechanics of rock failure and chip generation. Several years ago some work in the laboratory on the effect of mud properties on drilling rate was re- ported to the API', but the completion of this work and the investigation of the other variables affecting drilling rate required equipment somewhat more elaborate than that used on these earlier tests. This equipment has been assembled to form Humble's Drilling Engineering laboratory. To date only the effect of pressure on rock drillability while using water and air has been investigated, and this work is not yet complete. Facilities are available to investigate the effect of fluid properties on rate of penetration, and information is being assembled on a current basis on the mechanics of drilling. "When I was first asked to prepare this paper and presentation in late June, I thought it might be fun to ""step back and paint the bigger picture."" Having attempted to do this, fun is not the first descriptor that now comes to mind, and speaking dyslexically, I've had 'nuf.'Unlike Nostradamus, or even Orwell, I've discovered that I'm ""clairvoyantly challenged"" and not even the psychic hot-line was of much help, at least with respect to process control! I am somewhat comfortable speculating on evolutionary change, but the radical developments that will arise from revolutionary changes are well beyond my mortal capabilities. Even with evolutionary change, I'm reminded of the lessons of time series analysis which show the prediction error to grow exponentially as the horizon moves into the future. As Macluhan is reported to have said: ""Predicting the future based on the past is a little like driving your car while looking in the rearview mirror!""Having honestly presented my qualifications, allow me to try to look at process control and to offer some conjecture on where we're probably headed. In the end, it is said that: ""The plant of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.1""IntroductionA little less than a decade ago Andy Mular and I co-edited a monograph entitled ""A Practical Guide to Process Control in the Minerals Industry."" The work was commissioned by the senior management of a consortium of Canadian mining companies, since it was widely perceived that control was an area of great economic potential, but one that had not been effectively tapped. The concern was that if the industry could not soon deliver on the ""potential"", the term may well have appeared in the epitaph of what was, to these men, a very attractive investment opportunity. I think it is fair to say that over the past few years process control has clearly established itself as an essential technology in plant operation and optimization. That isn't to say that we get it all-right, all-the-time, but, the circumstances are much different than they were. In the eyes of many, process control has attained the distinction of being considered a mature technology, even though there are still countless avenues for exploration."

This paper presents equilibrium ratios measured on oil and gas samples taken from the Kelly-Snyder field at the reservoir temperature of 128°F. From these data smoothed curves were constructed for the reservoir fluid up to the bubble-point, 1,874 psia. A material balance calculation, based on the use of equilibrium ratios instead of the usual solubility and shrinkage meayr~rements is made on the field and compared to the con\.entional method. DETERMINATION OF EQUILIBRIUM RATIOS The equilibrium ratios, or K values were obtained by recombining separator samples of oil and gas taken when the reservoir was above its bubble point, and thus represented the reservoir fluid before any change had occurred due to the evolution of gas. The well sampled had a gas-oil ratio of 617 cu ft of high pressure sepalator gas per barrel of separator oil. and a bottom-hole temperature of 128°F. Samples were brought to equilibrium by agitating for 24 hours in a thermostat, maintained at the proper temperature within 0.2ºF, mercury being added when necessary to maintain the pressure constant. Samples of oil and gas were then taken by constant pressure displacement, and analyzed by low temperature frac-tionation. Equilibrium ratios were determined at 128°F and 500, 800, 1,000 and 1,400 psig. At the latter pressure, there were indications that the gas samples were contaminated with small quantities of oil, and only data taken at the first three pressures were included in Fig. I. This figure has been extended to higher and lower pressures by the use of the Fluor charts for 3,000 psi convergence pressure, on which the experimental points fit well. MATERIAL BALANCE EQUATIONS The possible errors involved in conventional material balance equations have been analyzed by Muskat1. Where the errors occur in field measurements, or in obtaining effective averages from variables such as gas-oil ratio and pressure, they will evidently be involved in any attempt to estimate the content of the reservoir. On the other hand, substantial errors may be introduced in conventional material balance calculations by: (1) the neglect of the amount of oil dissolved in gas at high pressures and temperatures in the reservoir, but which condenses under separator conditions; (2) the assumption that the separation of oil and gas in the reservoir may be duplicated by a differential liberation in the

During World War II the shortage of ore revived interest in eastern iron deposits, among which -!2..c "Ile Massachusetts and Connecticut limonites. The Cheever mine, in the Richmond-Salisbury area of Massachusetts, was formerly a large producer of limonite ere. The Bureau of Mines investigated the lateral and downward extensions of the Cheever ore body, which was mined from about 1850 to 1892, by ap open cut 1,000 feet long and also by underground workings. even holes aggregating 1,723 feet, were drilled by the Bureau during the winter of 1943-44. They comprised three diamond-core drill holes, two churn-drill holes, and two rotary-drill holes. A geophysical survey of the Cheever mine area and adjoining ground was made in conjunction with the drilling program. Although this survey did not locate the limonite ore beds, the data were of considerable assistance in locating the limestone contact which forms the footwall of the ore beds. Drilling disclosed two beds of limonite with a heavy overburden of glacial till.

A carga de laminação é um dos principais fatores que provocam o desgaste dos cilindros. Identificar quanto e como é o desgaste ocorrido durante o processo é um problema que a indústria de produtos laminados enfrenta há muitos anos, sendo motivo de muitos estudos nessa área. Esse desgaste, além de gerar custo para o fabricante, gera uma deformação no perfil no passe do laminador, fazendo com que a qualidade do produto final seja afetada. Deseja-se, com este trabalho, detectar e identificar o desgaste ocorrido nos cilindros de um laminador a quente de produtos não-planos na sequência de passe de seção redonda-oval-redonda, durante a produção, ou seja, online. Utilizando-se métodos de cálculo semi-experimentais e ferramentas baseadas em redes neurais, desenvolveu-se um sistema híbrido capaz de prever o desgaste dos canais dos cilindros. Foram realizadas inúmeras leituras dos valores de algumas das principais variáveis durante o processo de fabricação desses produtos laminados de uma grande empresa do ramo. Os resultados medidos foram analisados e foi gerada uma base de dados para a criação do modelo de previsão do desgaste nos canais, baseado em redes neurais artificiais e modelos semi-empíricos de cálculo do perfil de desgaste. O modelo foi testado na planta e os resultados foram bastante precisos.

The straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal chemical evaporation of mixed powders of silica and graphite at 1300_ and condensation on Si substrate without assistance of any catalyst. The synthesized samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The results suggested that the straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have uniform diameter about 50-200nm and neat smooth surface. The growth of such silica nanorods may be a result of the fluctuation of external conditions and internal structure faults causing a change in the growth direction of silica nanorods developed.

The use of activated carbon for extracting gold and silver from pregnant cyanide solution and pulp has been investigated many times. The primary advantage of this use of activated carbon is that .the dissolved values can be recovered from slimy ore pulps or from slime portions of ore without settling and thickening or filtering. The loaded carbon is removed from the barren pulp, and the pulp can then be discarded. Activated carbon has been used recently in treating gold ores containing very little soluble silver. When the carbon was loaded with a suitable amount of gold, the silver load was negligible. The remaining problems concerned the removal of the gold from the carbon, the recovery of the gold as bullion, and the reuse of the unloaded carbon. As described in a recent report, a method that solved these problems was developed. The gold-laden carbon was leached with caustic sodium sulfide solution and the gold simultaneously recovered by electrolysis. Both the carbon and the spent solution can be reused. That process was applicable to gold-laden carbon only. It was not applicable to carbon carrying silver, because sodium sulfide does not leach silver from carbon but "fixes" it. It has been necessary, therefore, to develop a modified process for the removal or desorption of both gold and silver from loaded carbon. This modi¬fied process permits the use of activated carbon for extracting both gold and silver from gold ores carrying enough silver to have economical interest or in which silver may be the predominating value.

Down-the-hole hammer is commonly recognized as the most powerful drilling equipment for weathered to fresh rock formation including boulders. However, its drilling diameter is restricted by reasons of difficulty to actualize large diameter drillhead and to ensure discharging means of cuttings. Cuttings are usually removed by flushing i.e. uprising return air after compressed air actuates hammer, but in case of large diameter drilling, as the clearance between drill rod and surrounding wall of hole become fairly large, necessary up-hole air velocity to transport cuttings can not be maintained. In case of marine or underwater drilling or high groundwater table, orthodox down-the-hole hammer is obstructed its operation by water. This single head hammer drill combined large diameter drillhead with reverse circulation of drilling fluid enables large diameter drilling extending to 1.5 m, i.e. actualized large diameter mechanical drillhead incorporated with ensured cuttings removal means enabled this range of drilling. This paper introduces its features and actual applications to large diameter bored pile drilling for varied sorts of rocks in maritime construction projects.

The Campo Morado precious-metal-bearing, volcanogenic massive sulphide district occurs in a Lower Cretaceous felsic volcanic sequence in a northerly trending belt in the Guerrero Terrane in northeastern Guerrero, Mexico. During upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary greenschist-facies regional metamorphism, the rocks were deformed strongly into a northeast-verging fold-and-thrust belt. The deposits belong to a low-sulfidation, volcanogenic massive sulphide system formed in a subaqueous environment, and are of the siliciclastic type. Most are on the flanks of felsic domes or in adjacent basins and many are associated with heterolithic volcaniclastic rocks. The Reforma and possibly the El Rey massive sulphide deposits are interpreted to be overturned, and the Naranjo, El Largo, and Estrella de Oro deposits and the El Profundo occurrence to the south are upright. The G9 deposit and the La Lucha and San Rafael occurrences are in an over-thrust plate further to the southwest. In several of the deposits, zinc, lead, silver, and gold are concentrated near the stratigraphic top, and copper is concentrated near the stratigraphic base; copper also is concentrated in replacement bodies near the top of some domes. Major minerals are pyrite, quartz, ankerite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Gold and silver occur in argentian gold, and silver also occurs in tennantite/freibergite and galena. Underlying stockwork zones contain disseminated and vein quartz, pyrite, chlorite, and ankerite, with locally abundant chalcopyrite and/or sphalerite. Exploration since 2004 has enlarged greatly the El Largo and the high-grade G-9 deposits, and slightly enlarged the El Rey deposit. The cumulative in situ massive sulphides for the Reforma, Naranjo, El Rey, El Largo, and G9 deposits exceed 45 Mt.

The opinion is general among smelter operators that magnetite formed in the converter and reverberatory furnace has much to do with the loss of copper in the slag. Its action appears to be due in part to its relatively high infusibility, chemical stability, and specific gravity, as a result of Which it tends to form a layer of highly viscous "magnetite mush" between slag and matte. Particles of matte which might otherwise settle out of the slag are unable to pass through this layer. Maier and Van Arsdele have shown that the inclusion of grills of matte in the slag is also at tires very probably due to chemical reaction between magnetite and the constituents of the matte. In smelter control and in any laboratory study of slats the determination of magnetite is therefore a matter of some importance. The difficulties in the ray of making such a determination with any accuracy are rather obvious. Iron may occur in slag as ferric oxide, magnetite, various intermediate oxides, sulphides, silicates, as free metal, and in solid solution of several of these substances. Even if only the total iron content is to be determined, accuracy can be obtained only by painstaking and time-consuming separations from interfering elements. The determination of ferrous, ferric, and free iron in the presence of each other is a difficult matter under the most favorable conditions, and when present in a slag the difficulties are increased by the refractory nature of the sample, by the presence of sulphides, and by such elements as vanadium and molybdenum.

O quartzito Taboões é uma fonte potencial de matérias-primas de sílica (areias industriais), e precisa ser adequadamente caracterizado para se definir metodologias de beneficiamento que visem o seu melhor aproveitamento possível. Dois litotipos foram classificados nos quartzitos intemperizados da Formação Taboões presentes em São Joaquim de Bicas – MG: quartzito argiloso e quartzito. A principal diferença entre eles é a abundância relativa de argilominerais. Em uma amostra representativa do quartzito argiloso foram caracterizados quatro tipos de contaminações com auxílio de análises granulométricas e químicas, microscopia (óptica e eletrônica de varredura), e difração de raios-X. Estas contaminações são: incrustações no quartzo; películas de argilominerais e minerais de ferro aderidas ao quartzo; partículas de minerais de ferro liberadas em meio ao quartzito; e partículas liberadas de rochas estranhas ao quartzito. A caracterização realizada é um ponto de partida para se planejar rotas de processamento mineral visando obtenção de matérias-primas para a indústria.

A recent analysis of 145 TBM tunnels of more than 1000km total length has helped to quantify the time dependence of utilization (U). In fact U = Tm, where T is time in hours and m is a negative gradient of deceleration. In poor quality ground, gradient m has a strong dependence on rock mass quality Q, for example m ˜ -0.5when Q = 0.1. Good investigation is critical for ensuring faster TBM tunneling then drill-and-blasting, which tends not to slow down (in m/hr) as the tunnel length increases. Anew design model called QTBM allows more reliable prognoses be made, and occasionally will disqualify the TBM solution.
