A program to provide technical in-formation on the use of fuels in pyro-metallurgical processes, from the Canadian fuel viewpoint, was initiated about five years ago by a Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy liaison grou1> composed of members from the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division and the Iron and Steel Committee of the Metallurgy Division. This paper is another of a series prepared for this program. Purpose This is a unique project because the mining and tunneling industries have become highly mechanized and cannot normally accommodate a project where surface disturbance must be minimized or eliminated when there is less than 10 feet of ground cover. More traditional less mechanized methods must be employed and the skills and techniques for accomplishing the work have become all but non-existent. Therefore, this article highlights those areas of specialized skills and techniques. Methods The article will describe the design approach, the method(s) of ground support selected, the method(s) of excavation selected, the planning, scheduling and materials selection process. In addition, the article will describe the actual production characteristics and the results of the project. This approach will concentrate on productivities, adaptations to actual conditions and the quality of the end product. The design approach basically was to insure that the temporary support methods were adequate for the excavation and shoring stage of the project. The final concrete liner was designed using conventional structural design methods with the goal of constructing a tunnel that will last 100 years. The methods of support were spiling and variations of spiling in order to provide advance temporary ground support. In this project spiling is steel channel cantilevered and driven into the ground ahead of the working tunnel face which supports the ground allowing the face muck to be removed with overhead protection’. Conclusion This will be a discussion of the applicability of the methods. The actual performance of the excavation and shoring methods will also be evaluated. The final concrete liner completion results, the actual production rates and the conformance with budget and schedule will be addressed.

"A model for gold leaching was developed and implemented into a simulator. The simulator uses a description of the ore that is based on the mineral composition and precious metal content. The model accounts for the distribution of minerals and precious metals through the size intervals. An ore texture model based on precious metals and minerals grain sizes within the ore is used to predict the exposed surface of the species in the various size intervals. A model is proposed to predict the rate of dissolution of any species dissolution using the exposed surface, particle size, cyanide and oxygen concentrations, temperature, pH and agitation. The flow of slurry through a leaching tank is modelled using a parallel arrangement of perfect mixers to simulate a bypass and a Cholette-Cloutier mixer model. The simulator can be used for circuit optimization but was developed to provide an environment for learning the basic concepts of process analysis methods. Examples are given to illustrate the application of the simulator for planning tracer tests and sampling campaigns.INTRODUCTIONThe constant pressure to improve the operation of processes that are already close to optimum imposes to plant engineers to be aware of the available process analysis tools and to be able to use them to assess process operation and make a diagnosis to possible problems. Some of these tools are:•,Sampling the streams of a process;•,Data reconciliation;•,Analysis of mixing in reactors;•,Estimation of rate parameters;•,Optimal tuning and flow sheet modification;•,Automatic control and real time optimization.Although some of these tools are part of the curriculum of many university engineering programs, the students are not exposed to actual process analysis problems. In addition the complexity of the ore dressing processes compounded with unavoidable measurement errors and plant disturbances can discourage many motivated engineers. These factors often lead to an incomplete valorization of the collected data and a poor return on the investment associated with the sampling, testing and analysis of the samples.Simulators are readily available for process optimization (Yalcin and Shang, 2006) by allowing:•,The simulation of various flow sheet configurations;•,The simulation of a change of operating conditions;•,The simulation of various control strategies;•,The training of plant operators.However few simulators have been developed with the objective of providing an environment for training plant engineers and technicians to the use of tools for process analysis and optimisation."

Since 1994, various mines in the US have cooperated with research scientists at the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories to address issues related to verification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The .CTBT requires that no country may conduct any nuclear explosion in the future. While the CTBT is a significant step toward reducing the global nuclear danger, verifying compliance with the treaty requires that the monitoring system be able to detect, locate and identify much larger numbers of smaller amplitude seismic events than had been required previously. Large mining blasts conducted world-wide will be of sufficient amplitude to trigger the monitoring system at the lower threshold. It is therefore imperative that research into the range various blasting practices employed, the relationship of yield to seismic magnitude, and identification of anomalous blasting results be performed. This paper will describe a suite of experiments funded by the Department of Energy and conducted by the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories in cooperation with the US mining industry. Observations of cast blasting, underground long wall generated coal bumps, stoping, and explosively induced collapse of room and pillar panels will be presented. Results of these dual use experiments which are of interest to the mining community will be discussed. These include 1) variation of amplitude of seismic energy at various azimuths from cast blasts, 2) identification of the extent of back failure following explosive removal of pillars, and 3) the use of single fired shots for calibration of the monitoring system. The wealth of information and discovery described in this paper is a direct result of mutual cooperation between the US Government and the US Mining Industry.

The Weda Bay nickel and cobalt laterite deposits on Halmahera Island, Republic of Indonesia were first drilled in May 1996 by Strand Minerals Pte Ltd (Strand). Subsequent exploration has delineated four large laterite provinces, parts of which have been diamond drilled to outline an indicated nickel resource of 59.9 Mt of 1.51 per cent Ni and 0.09 per cent Co within a total indicated and inferred resource of 117 Mt of 1.36 per cent Ni and 0.12 per cent Co. The project is held as a Seventh Generation Contract of Work (COW) by PT Weda Bay Nickel, which is jointly owned by Strand (90 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (ten per cent). Strand is a wholly owned subsidiary of Weda Bay Minerals Inc, a company listed on the Toronto and Alberta Stock Exchanges in Canada. Halmahera is located in the north-eastern part of the Indonesian archipelago at the convergent junction of three major plates and is a region of considerable tectonic and geological complexity. The western arms of Halmahera form a classic volcanic island arc while the central region and eastern arms contain ophiolite complexes and interlayered sediments. The extensive areas of laterite discovered at Weda Bay have developed over serpentinised harzburgites and dunites of pre-Cretaceous age. Weathering of these rocks has produced laterite profiles that are enriched in nickel and cobalt. There are three economically mineralised laterite types, namely limonites, ferruginous saprolites and saprolites and all are amenable to rapid pressure acid leaching with recoveries of 98 per cent nickel and 94 per cent cobalt in less than 20 minutes.

The new mining method of multiple strata blasting, called StratablastTM, is described in a separate paper presented at this conference. The current paper presents three case studies where the technique was implemented in three different configurations in large-scale blasts in Australia. The first two blasts were in the Hunter Valley of NSW while the third was at Ensham Mine in Central Queensland. All blasts comprised multiple layers that were blasted in a single drill and blast cycle, with unique designs applied to each layer to achieve different blast outcomes from the various layers.

"Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market, with plans to begin production of a 500 TPD operation in 1984.Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogeneous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogeneous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies. INTROOUCTIONWhen the Black Oonald mine at Calabogie Ontario ceased production in 1954 nearly all North American crystalline flake graphite had to be imported from offshore. Orebodies in the United States were too small or too low in grade to be exploited economically.The Houthillier Township near Mont Laurier in Quebec (Figure 1) was a known graphite-bearing area The Orrwell property in that area was delineated in 1957 Some test work including minor footage of diamond drilling was carried out by Italia Copper and the MHM Syndicate prior to 1981 when Orrwell acquired the property"

Several shear failures were observed in Shaft #1 at the Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine, after mining longwall Panel 23, 1,100 ft to the east of Shaft #1. It was speculated that this shear damage could be related to differential ground movement caused by in situ stress relief from the ?stress shadow? of the caved zone above longwall Panel 23. A numerical study was conducted to assess the possibility of the shaft shear damage being caused by in situ stress relief and the potential for additional damage to Shaft #1 and two other nearby shafts, due to mining nearby longwall Panel 24. Three-dimensional (3D) models were built in FLAC3D to simulate past and future mining near shafts, the estimated local anisotropic and directional horizontal stresses, and the overlying variable surface topography. The numerical analyses indicated that stress relief due to mining Panel 23 caused the shear damage to Shaft #1and that additional damage to Shaft #1 and the other two shafts, would likely result from mining longwall Panel 24. Additional shear damage was documented in Shaft #1 when longwall Panel 24 was mined, confirming the results of the numerical analyses.

The installation of the Flotation Capacity Project flow sheet in the copper concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The project involved increasing the flotation capacity with Wemco tank cells and Jameson cells as well as changing the copper cleaner circuit layout. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion had significant involvement from operational, maintenance and technical personnel adopting the same approach as the highly successful George Fisher project in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at MIM. The involvement of people familiar with the concentrator allowed for smooth integration of the changes into an operating concentrator with minimal downtime. Detailed circuit analysis over many years identified opportunities for improvements in the flotation circuit for both grade and recovery. This paper describes the program of work that led to the Copper Concentrator Flotation Capacity Project, and the implementation of the circuit expansion and flow sheet changes that resulted in an overall improvement in the circuit recovery.

This Final Report describes a program whose objective was to design, develop, fabricate, and test an airborne mass monitor for unattended and recording measurements of the concentration of dust in mining environments. Sensing collection are performed by beta-radiation attenuation and inertial implementation respectively. The instrument is portable, battery or line operated provides a digital printout of the mass concentration during each selection sampling period, as well as the accumulated mass of dust, and the elapsed sampling time.

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

In 2005, El Teniente mine began preconditioning the primary rock mass by hydraulic fracturing (HF). The major perceived benefits of this process are a decrease in the magnitude of the expected maximum seismic event and improved cave propagation. In addition, HF has resulted in new information on the propagation pressures of each fracture. Previous studies have attempted to relate propagation pressure to minor principal stress or confining stress.Considering the spatial continuity of propagation pressure and the significant quantity of collected data since the incorporation of the HF technique, minimum requirements for geostatistical modelling have been reached, permitting robust estimates inside the representative volume with acceptable errors (Cornejo, Muñoz and Rojas, 2012; Cornejo and Landeros, 2013). These results are then used to identify zones with higher magnitudes, which are mostly related to more complex geotechnical zones (intrusive and major faults) and caving singularities, making it possible to estimate the spatial extension of these zones.Finally, these results are integrated with other geomechanics aspects to support risk analysis of the mining plan.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Landeros, P, Benado, D, Caviedes, C and Pinochet, A, 2016. This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining, Photographs of actual mine gob were digitized to obtain approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a laboratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Varying the maximum particle size was not found to affect the stress-strain behavior, but changing the gradation appeared to influence the stress-strain behavior. The stress-strain relationship of the simulated gob material was nonlinear, the stress-secant-modulus relationship was approximately linear, and the stress-tangent-modulus relationship was approximately a second-order polynomial function. Equations were generated from these curves, providing numerical modelers with a means to estimate gob moduli based on the stress level. In addition, the experimental data were statistically evaluated using multiple regression analyses, producing a series of equations to predict the secant and tangent moduli from the given stress level, bulking factor, rock strength, and thickness-to-width shape ratio of the particles.

El presente artículo describe la actividad petrolera realizada durante el año 1962. En 1863 el Gobierno del Perú derogó al Ing. A. E. Prentice el estudio de las posibilidades petroleras de Piura y Tumbes, a través de la perforación del primer pozo de petróleo en Zorritos a través de herramientas imperfectas. Ante tal éxito, en 1864 Lama y Rudens gestionaron que se constituya en Nueva York la "Compañía Peruana de Petróleo". Posteriormente, doce compañías petroleras han desarrolado trabajos de exploración y nueve se encuentran en estado de producción. Static dissolution of CaO into a CaO-SiO2-Al2O3slag and slags with additional fluxing agents (fluorspar, nepheline syenite and ilmenite) was studied. The slag was packed into dense CaO crucibles and heated to 1500ºC /1600ºC. After reaction, the crucible was air cooled and cross-sectioned. The development of the Ca2SiO4 phase and concentration profiles of various cations across the reaction zone were examined by Electron Probe Micro Analysis. At 1500ºC, a Ca2SiO4layer was found to form at the CaO/slag interface. No such layer was evident at 1600ºC. Ilmenite and nepheline syenite were found to be effective substitutes for fluorspar, increasing the rate of CaO dissolution.

Coupling between deformation processes and rock permeability is a major factor influencing the architecture of fluid migration and the localisation of ore deposition in several types of hydrothermal ore systems in middle to upper crustal regimes. Permeability in many hydrothermal systems is controlled by a dynamic competition between deformation-induced porosity-creation processes and porosity-destruction processes. Localisation of deformation within faults, fractures and shear zones leads to flow localisation, with large-scale flow systems forming when active faults and shear zones link to create percolation networks. Numerical modelling techniques are used to explore the growth of fracture networks and evolution of network connectivity during progressive deformation. Initial results indicate that networks reach a percolation threshold at very low strains. Near the percolation threshold, flow is localised along a small proportion of the total fracture population and favours localised ore deposition. At higher strains, flow is distributed more widely throughout the fracture population and may provide reduced potential for production of high-grade deposits. The distribution of mesothermal gold deposits along a small subset of the total population of co-active faults and shear zones in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia indicates that some hydrothermal systems maintain themselves near the percolation threshold for a substantial part of the lifetime of the system. Fluid-driven growth of fault/fracture/shear networks may lead them to self-organise near the percolation threshold.

It is indeed a privilege and honour to deliver the keynote address at this 15th APCOM symposium. APCOM has played a significant role in my own career and I am sure in the careers of many of the thousands of other participants over the years since its inception as a short course on "Computers and Computer Applications in the Mineral Industry" at the University of Arizona in 1961. The technical papers and addresses presented at the 14 past symposia provide an imposing record of sustained pro- gress and achievement in the field of computer applications. I will not attempt to analyse this technical side of APCOM but rather endeavour to provide you with a broad popular perspective of the road travelled to date and that lying ahead of us. The name of the series of symposia has changed from time to time, with titles such as Mathematical and Statistical Techniques, Mining and Exploration, and Decision Making being used at various times until in 1972 the name APCOM was coined and the present loga designed by the South African organising committee for the 10th symposium. It can conveniently be accepted as standing for:
