I have been requested to present a paper on the slag from the basic Bessemer process, as prepared for fertilizing. Since Professor W. B. Phillips presented at the Birmingham meeting, in May, 1888, an able paper* on this subject, as it had been developed up to that time, there is little for me to add. Perhaps later practice may be best expressed by the homely proverb, " The proof of the pudding is in the eating." As the Pottstown Iron Company is the only concern manufacturing basic Bessemer slag in this country, the writer's personal experience in the use of it may be interesting. Our slag averages: P2O5, 21.37; SiO2,, 5.10; MgO, 5.90; Al2O3, 4.01; MnO, 5.56 ; FeO, 12.00; Na2O and K2O, 0.80; CaO, 45.26; total, 100.00. This gives over 76 per cent. of phosphoric acid and lime. In using this material for several years past on my lawn and garden, I have found it better than anything else I have ever tried ; and I am sure that any of you who had seen my green grass last month (January), wherever the ground was bare from snow, as bright as in early fall, would be forced to acknowledge the advantages of this soil-enricher. The grass on my private lawn, and around the company's office, is green the whole winter; and we have raised very good sod, by the use of this phosphate, where, without it, we were unable to get the grass to grow either from seed or by repeatedly sodding. The same statement applies to garden-truck; when the soil was first broken up, a good crop of vegetables was easily raised. My own gardener has had several premiums from Philadelphia seedsmen (notably, last year, the first premium for sugarcorn raised in the first part of July, being the first sample sent them). Our method of applying this material is to grind the slag very finely, so that at least 60 per cent. of it will go through a 150-mesh screen (i.e., say, 22,500 meshes to the square inch), and 90 per cent. through a 100-mesh screen (i.e., 10,000 meshes to the square inch). This fine grinding seems to be the main condition of success.

The object of this investigation was to determine with a vertical magnetic variometer the extent of the titaniferous ore deposit that occurs not far from Ivry in Terrebonne County, Quebec, about 70 miles north of Montreal. The Ivry mine, on lots 37 and 38 of range V, Beres-ford township, Quebec, is one of the largest and most accessible to transportation of the deposits of ilmenite in Quebec. The ore consists of an aggregate of ilmenite anhedra serving as host for numerous fine plaques of hematite. No magnetite is known from any occurrence near this lot, and in this way the deposit differs from many others that contain a large percentage of magnetite with the ilmenite. The deposit at Ivry thus has much lower magnetic susceptibility than those containing abundant magnetite, and a sensitive magnetometer was necessary for the work, although a body of magnetite with ilmenite about a mile from the Ivry mine was successfully prospected with a dip needle. The principal orebody is exposed in a quarry known as the Ivry mine, from which about 16,000 tons of ore have been shipped. Small exposures of ilmenite isolated by drift serve to show the presence at the surface of some of the bodies indicated by the magnetometer, but most of the hill is covered with glacial till and second growth hardwood. At the lower levels the till gives place to fluvioglacial sands and gravels from which the forest has been cleared. The increasing thickness of the sand and gravel as the hill descends makes the tracing outward of the deposits from the rocky knob of anorthosite a difficult matter. Within the orebodies too, some masses of anorthosite persist, which may account for some local irregularities. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph, taken by reflected light, of a typical specimen of the ore. The dark patches are hematite and the light parts are ilmenite No trace of magnetite was found. The mean of four analyses quoted by Robinson1 is: titaninm, 19.26 per cent; iron 45.41 per cent. G. A. Vissac (Consulting Engineer, Vancouver, B. C.) —Some of the data presented in this paper, in connection with cost studies of washed coals, should be clarified and qualified. Washing a raw coal down to a low ash content may mean higher losses in refuse, but the cost of the operation may be more than compensated by the increased value of the resultant product. However, careful engineering and accurate machinery are required to insure maximum profits. Washing at a low gravity separation demands a very accurate automatic process, chiefly when the small sizes of coal are being handled. Coal consumers today are buying mostly on a Btu basis, cognizant of the fact that low ash contents result in lower installation costs and in savings in handling and transportation charges. The attached Table X gives the actual balance sheets of the various cleaning operations corresponding to various ash contents for the two coals presented in the paper, using the old technique of a two-products separation. or the new technique, now commonly used in Europe, of a three-way separation made possible by new methods and new equipment. Savings in capital costs, handling, and transportation have been calculated on the basis of a delivered cost f.O.b. plant of $10.00 per ton of coal at 16.5 pct ash (actual 1953 average price reported by Consolidated Edison, N. Y.), and of $3.50 at the mine also for 16.5 pct ash coal. In both cases this corresponds to values of 126 and 4.26 per 1 pct of combustible and per ton, respectively, on delivered and on at the mine prices. As an example, the middle western coal at 16.5 pct ash, raw, washed down to 4 pct ash in a two-way process will give 53.75 pct of clean coal at 4 pct ash and 46.25 pct of refuse at 31 pct ash. The value of the losses will be 0.4625x(100—31)x0.042 = $1.34. Add the cost of washing, capital, and operation, which is $0.35. The total cost will then be $1.69. But with a three-ways separation we will have 53.75 pct of first-grade coal at 4 pct ash, 37.25 pct second-

THE structure of the equiaxed zone of several A1-Cu samples mechanically stirred during unidirectional solidification was examined. The stirring was produced by rotary oscillation of the mold about its vertical axis.' It was found that in Some samples the structure is not of the same type over the whole of the equiaxed zone; it consists of regions with two different etching responses. Fig. 1 shows this structure in a Al-1 wt pct ku sample. The lighter etching regions with a coarse structure form something like a network and the darker etching regions with a finer structure can be observed as the continuation of the coarse structure inside this network. The difference in size and shape of the dendrite branches (they are rounded in the coarser structure) is similar to that found by Williamson and Chalmers in ice crystals solidified in undercooled water: when the amount of undercooling was small, the ice crystals were more rounded and coarser than these solidified with a larger amount of undercooling.' It seems justified to conclude that the observed structure resulted from solidification under different thermal conditions: the coarser structure solidified first out of the "purer" liquid and with a smaller amount of undercooling and the finer was formed later out of solute-enriched liquid under conditions of much more rapid heat extraction. A considerable change in the heat flow conditions at the later stages of solidification can be easily understood by taking into account that the coarser crystals form a continuous network and the amount of trapped liquid is relatively small; hence the contribution of latent heat is much smaller in the later stages of solidification. The difference in structure and etching characteristic reflects a difference in composition between these two regions. It was found that the darker etching re- gions are harder (30.4 to 31.3 HV5) than the lighter etching ones (25 to 26 HV5). A similar type of structure was found in a A1-4 wt pct Cu sample grown by Czochralski method. Fig. 2 shows the structure in the lower part of a sample grown slowly and then decanted by a rapid removing of the sample from the melt. In a few places trapped liquid solidified in the same manner as in the sample shown in Fig. 1.

At the Miami plant of the International Smelting Co., Inspiration, Ariz., there are four reverberatory furnaces, all 120 ft. long. At present only one of these furnaces is in operation. It is operated as a wet-charge furnace, the charge being distributed for about 65 ft. down the furnace length. Usually this charge contains about 12 per cent moisture and runs 25 per cent sulfur, of which there is eliminated in the furnace from 25 to 30 per cent. The furnace is oil-fired, the fuel being burned in a battery of Cananea-type, low-pressure burners. The flame is kept short and conditions so adjusted as to obtain complete combustion within the furnace. The average furnace draft, taken through the verb arch, amounts to only 0.02 in. of H2O. Draft is purposely kept low to cut down infiltration through the flues and boiler settings, and control dampers are regulated to maintain this uniform condition throughout the charging as well as the smelting period. Hot gases discharge from the furnace uptake through a common header flue to the waste-heat boilers. The general layout and dimensions of the plant are shown in Fig. 1. Four Stirling boilers, two of class M-26 (713 hp.) and two class M-31 (850 hp.), serve the furnace. Three usually are sufficient to take care of normal operation, the fourth boiler being used as a spare when necessary. The distribution of hot gases to the various boilers is regulated by the dampers in the boiler exit flues. Normally the boilers closest to the furnace uptake would evaporate more water than do those farther away, but dampers are regulated so as to distribute fairly well the load between the several boilers. Steam from the waste-heat plant is delivered to the adjoining power house of the Inspiration company, where it is used both in the Nordberg blowing engines and for electrical generation. Steam pressures and temperatures recorded are those in the main power-plant header and are thus inclusive of all losses in about 500 ft. of 10-in. line. Steam for smelter heating and auxiliary use is taken from the main waste-heat header, is reduced to 125 lb. and distributed through separate lines. Boiler feed water is supplied by the power plant and consists of returned condensate, augmented to a large extent by make-up water

WHAT was perhaps the first attempt at basic converting in the Southwest was made by the late Charles F. Shelby at Cananea early in 1907, when he removed the acid lining from one of the 8 by 12-ft. barrel-type converters then in use at the reduction works of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. and substituted a lining of one course of magnesite brick. In this shell, he blew 21 taps (about 180 tons) of matte to white metal before the brick gave out along the tuyère line. In every case, the white metal so made was transferred and blown to copper in other converters. The cost of the lining was $700 and Mr. Shelby gave up the experiment as impracticable. No further serious effort to bessemerize copper mattes in a vessel having a more or less permanent lining of basic brick was made by any of the large copper smelters in the Southwest until some months after Messrs. Peirce and Smith had brought the question permanently before the public, and had proved it to be a metallurgical and financial success by their work at Baltimore and Garfield. Early in 1911, the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. had in operation at its reduction works at Cananea, Mex., several 8 by 12-ft. barrel-type converters lined with magnesite brick which had previously been operating with acid linings. In the 18 months following, these converters produced 50,000 tons of copper. In June, 1912, this company installed the first of its new equipment of six stands of electrically operated 12-ft. Great Falls type converters, and shortly afterward discontinued the use of the smaller shells. In September, 1911, the Consolidated Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co. had installed at its El Paso plant two 10 by 26-ft. Peirce-Smith converters. Later, in March, 1913, one standard Great Falls type converter was added. .About the time the Peirce-Smith converters were going in at El Paso, the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. was experimenting with basic linings in 7-ft. by 10-ft. 6-in. barrel converters at its plant in Douglas, Ariz. These efforts were sufficiently successful to enable the plant to handle the total output of copper in these small shells until the standard. Great Falls converters were substituted in June, 1914.

ALUMINUM deoxidation equilibrium in liquid iron has been the subject of many investigations. Sawamura and Sano1 have written a critical survey of the literature on this subject and consider the data of Gokcen and chipman2 and of d'Entremont, Guernsey, and Chip-man3 to be most reliable. The present study was undertaken to check these data and extend the range of the experiments to lower temperature. The experiments consisted of equilibrating 5-lb Fe-Al melts with recrystallized alumina crucibles at 1580o + 10oC, and analyzing the solidified ingots for aluminum and oxygen. The electrolytic iron stock contained 100 ppm C, 20 ppm 0, and trace amounts of other elements.* The stock was induction-melted in an atmosphere of 5 pet H2 in argon to attain equilibrium between the melt and the crucible. The temperature was measured with a W, 3 pet Re/W, 26 pet Re thermocouple, and the equilibration time was about 4 hr. The results are plotted in Fig. 1 along with curves obtained from the data of d'Entremont et al.,3 for temperatures of 1740o and 1910°C. The present results can be seen to be consistent with the previously reported high-temperature data. The reaction under study is AI2O3 (s) = 2 Al (l) +3O [1] for which the deoxidation product is Kl =[% Al]2 [%O]3 [2] (Under the experimental conditions, Fe A12O4 is not expected to form.4) In Fig. 2, values of log Ki evaluated at 0.01 pet A1 are plotted against 1/T, using data obtained from all the investigations under consideration. The deoxidation product is plotted in Fig. 2 in lieu of the equilibrium constant (normally obtained by evaluating Ki as pet A1 — 0) because of the uncertainty involved in extrapolating to zero concentration. The difficulty in extrapolating the present data for 1580°C is apparent curvature in the log Ki vs pet Al plot. This curvature is perhaps due to the uncertainty in oxygen analysis for concentrations of 5 ppm and below. For the data of Gokeen and chipman,' the extrapolation is also difficult because of experimental scatter. The line drawn through the points plotted in Fig. 2 may be represented by the equation:

THE Butte, Anaconda & Pacific electrification is of peculiar interest, in an incidental way, to the entire mining fraternity, and especially the engineering branch, not only in this great Northwest country but throughout the entire Western mining country, which is rich in minerals and water power. It is probably fair to say that the prime object of mining and smelting engineering is to reduce the cost of production, and in the case in hand the relative location of mines and smelter brings the cost of transportation of ore to the front. While some might assign this item to the railway people, it is inseparably a part and parcel of the general scheme of the production of metal from the ore. In considering the electrification of the B., A. &. P. railway the mining and smelting engineer, above all, wants to know what saving will be effected by the change in motive power. Unfortunately the new power has been in use during a very limited period and on the Smelter Hill section of the road only, and no reliable data, from actual service conditions, can be obtained until the entire electrified section has been in service for a reasonable length of time. Any remarks on this subject at the present time, therefore, must of necessity be general in nature and more or less descriptive. The railway, electrical and mining worlds and the country in general are indebted to the B., A. & P. railway for the pioneer work it is now doing, as it undoubtedly marks the beginning of the electrification, within the comparatively near future, of all transcontinental roads between the Missouri river and the Pacific coast. Together with this goes the development of an untold wealth in water power and all natural resources within the same territory. For the first time in the history of electric railway work, in this country, direct current at a potential of 2,400 volts is being used. With this potential there is a great saving in transmission of energy to the locomotives and there are only two substations, one at. either end and 26 miles apart, for supplying the power for the movement of trains of heavy tonnage over the main line and for switching movements at terminal and intermediate yards, and comparatively little feeder copper is required.

THE memorable features of American history have been making fast during the last century, and notably so since 1860; and they are by no means confined to political or to any one branch of scientific development. Of all the industrial arts, none show a greater change or a mightier progress than the Bessemer manufacture. And this year, while we are celebrating the first centennial of our national life, we can also celebrate the first decennial of American Bessemer practice. While not forgetting or undervaluing what has been done in other countries, I have thought that a brief history of the introduction and development of the Pneumatic or Bessemer process in America would be of interest. In 1863 the Kelly Pneumatic Process Company was formed and an arrangement entered into with William Kelly, who had taken out letters-patent of the United States, Nos. 16,444 ; 17,628, re¬issued as 505; 18,910, dated January 10th, 1857 ; June 23d, 1857; November 3d, 1857; and December 22d, 1857, respectively. This association was composed of the Cambria Iron Company, E. B. Ward, Park Brothers & Co., Lyon, Shorb & Co., Z. S. Durfee, and, later, Chouteau, Harrison & Valle joined the combination. Not satisfied with possessing the control of the Kelly patent, they sent Mr. Z. S. Durfee to England, to secure for this country Mushet's patent on recarburization, No. 17,389, dated May 26th, 1857, the same having been taken out in England on September 22d, 1856. In this Mr. Durfee was successful. Previous to the application of William Kelly for a patent, Henry Bessemer, of England, had taken out patents dated February 12th, 1856, and August 25th, 1856, in this country. Kelly claimed priority in the discovery of the principles of the process, and the Patent-office allowed his claim by granting him his patents. In the autumn of 1862 Mr. Alexander L. Holley, while in England, was impressed with the importance of Mr. Bessemer's inven¬tion, and so fully foresaw its future, that, upon his return to the United States, he induced Messrs. John A. Griswold and John F. Winslow, of Troy, New York, to join him in endeavoring to possess Bessemer's American patents. Mr. Holley returned to England in

STRIKING new developments in the field of industrial minerals include the employment of lime, salt, coal, and air for the manufacture of stockings, and the substitution of paper for granite and marble in making tombstones. Certain minerals that have heretofore been regarded as valueless except as museum or laboratory specimens, are now being applied commercially. Serpentine, in forms neither fibrous nor ornamental, massive topaz, pinite, and zoisite are examples. For certain other minerals, notably pyrophyllite, bentonite, vermiculite, and sulphur, extension of established uses into new fields has occurred. Substitution takes a toll in many industries, but producers of industrial minerals as a class have gained more than they have lost in recent years. Encouraging progress has been made in developing at long last a suitable substitute for certain of the uses of mica, the only industrial mineral on the strategic list of commodities established by the War. and Navy Munitions Board. In spite of the widespread interest in rock bolt research, relatively little is known about the critical region surrounding the bolt anchor. In analyzing the stress distribution around an opening resulting from rock bolt support, it is commonly assumed that the bolt is fixed at a point far enough from the surface so that the anchor does not influence the performance of the bolt. Furthermore, a bolt anchor is assumed to per- form satisfactorily if it will hold the design load with a minimum amount of load relaxation, commonly called bleedoff. From the standpoint of the design engineer both of these assumptions are reasonable, but they ignore the fact that the extremely high stresses in the region of the anchor are capable of generating fractures in the rock. Lang estimated the bearing stresses for a slot and wedge anchor on a one-inch-diameter bolt to be as high as 125,000 psi. This paper describes a more thorough analysis of the magnitude of the stresses around the anchor and the nature of the potential fractures that might result.

DUPING the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of "lime-roasting" of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,' and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art. The elimination of the sulphur-content of galena has been always the most troublesome part of the smelting-process, being both costly in the operation and wasteful of silver and lead. Previous to the introduction of the Huntington-Heberlein process at Pertusola, Italy, it was effected by a variety of methods. In the treatment of non-argentiferous galena concentrate, the smelting was done by the roast-reduction method (roasting in reverberatory furnace and smelting in blast-furnace); the roast-reaction method, applied in reverberatory furnaces; and the roast-reaction method, applied in Scotch hearths 2 Precipitation-smelting, simple, had practically gone out of use, although its reactions enter into the modern blast-furnace practice, as do also those of the roast-reaction method.

USE of copper as an intentionally added alloy in steel and cast iron has rapidly expanded with-in the last fifteen years. It is estimated that in 1931 not more than 2000 tons of copper were so used; by 1941, however, this figure had grown to 13,000 tons. Tonnage figures during the war years have been restricted just as copper itself has been restricted, but copper-bearing cast irons and steels have played a part in the production of ordnance equipment. They are used in gun carriages, airplane landing-gear assemblies, scout cars, bulldozing equipment, army trucks, armor plate and many other instruments of war. These wartime applications have their counterpart in many peacetime applications; derricks, dredges, mine equipment, railway equipment, trucks, farm implements, automobiles, and tractors, all usually contain some parts made of copper-bearing steel or iron. An example of this is the Ford tractor which in 1940 contained over 300 lb. of copper-bearing steel castings. To this list should be added corrugated building sheet for exterior use most of which, at the present time, contains upward of 0.15 per cent copper. With the return to peacetime economy and the removal of wartime restrictions, it appears certain that copper cast irons and steels will find increasing application in civilian goods.

The chemical and mineralogical composition of Caribbean bauxite ores are described. Extraction of alumina by several processes from both Haiti and Jamaica bauxites is discussed and data presented. IMMENSE deposits of bauxite occur in the Caribbean islands of Hispaniola and Jamaica in the high plateau lands and have been excellently described by 0. C. Schmedeman.' The bauxite occurs as deposits in catchments or etched depressions in Tertiary limestone believed to have been deposited in the Eocene and Oligocene periods.' In appearance both the Haiti and Jamaica bauxites resemble a relatively high iron clay and have indeed been mistaken for such.' They are very soft and friable and disperse readily on vigorous agitation in water. The color range in general is light brown to red. Chemically, the outstanding characteristic of the bauxites is the low silica and high ferric oxide content. The extremely low silica makes them particularly valuable for the production of alumina in the Bayer plant since silica is responsible for the loss of both alumina and soda chemically combined as XNa,OYSiO2,ZAl2O2. The ferric oxide, only traces of ferrous iron are present, offers no interference in the production of high grade alumina. Typical oxide analyses of three types of ore are given in Table I2 and a list of the elements occurring in spectrographic quantities in Table 11." The size of the individual particles in the ore makes successful petrographic examination extremely difficult. The ores contain some relatively coarse grains of heavy minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, and rutile, but other than occasional crystals of a few microns, the greater portion of the minerals are submicroscopic in size and approach colloidal dimensions. The mineralogic composition of the ores has been investigated by X-ray and differential thermal analysis.' These investigations indicate that the predominant mineral phases present are gibbsite (A1203.3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3.H2O), hematite (Fe2O3), and goethite (Fe2O3-H2O). There is no evidence of the occurrence of diaspore (Al2O3.H2O) in either the Haiti or Jamaica ores, but some type of "amorphous" alumina may be present in some of the bauxites of Jamaica." The temperature stability regions in the alumina-water system have been investigated and are given in recent literature. In the temperature range where the hydrated forms are stable, as determined by hydrothermal bomb methods," ibbsite is the stable phase to 155°C (311°F), boehmite from 155°C (311°F) to 280°C (536oF), and diaspore from 280°C (536°F) to 450°C (842°F). Although quite similar in many characteristics, the Haiti and Jamaica ore show a divergence in mineralogic composition that is reflected in the extractability of the alumina described in later paragraphs. Two principal differences occur in mineralogic composition. The iron-bearing mineral in the Haiti ores is predominantly hematite, while in the Jamaica ores goethite is predominant.4 Directly related to the extraction of alumina are the two minerals, gibbsite and boehmite. Boehmite is relatively high in the Haiti ores and in some of the less soluble Jamaica ores, while gibbsite predominates in the ores in Jamaica amenable to the American Bayer process of extraction. Pedersen and Related Processes In general, all processes for the extraction of alumina involving sintering or fusion of bauxite ores with limestone, soda ash, or a combination of limestone and soda ash followed by leaching, are based on the formation of alumina compounds that. yield alumina soluble in the subsequent leach. The principal idealized reactions in respect to alumina and silica for the three types of processes are as follows: Soda Ash Sinter: A12O3 + Na2CO3 = Na2O-Al2O, + CO2 SiO2 + Na2CO3 = Na2O . SiO2 + CO2 A12O2 + SiO2 + Na2CO3 = Na2O.Al2O8. SiO2 + CO2 Leach (with excess water): H2O + Na2O-A12O3 = 2 NaOH + A12O3 (insolution) H2O + Na2O-SiO2 = 2 NaOH + SiO2 (in solution) Soda Ash— Limestone Sinter: Na2CO2 + A12O3 = Na2O.A1203 + CO2 2CaCO3 + SiO2 = 2CaO . SiO2 + 2CO2 Leach (with excess water): Na2O' A1208 + H2O = 2NaOH + A13O3 (in solution) These latter reactions are the basis of the sinter process currently used for the recovery of soda and

ONE of the major uses of barium in metallic form is as a getter material in vacuum tubes. Because of the high chemical reactivity of the metal, Ba-Al alloys are extensively used. Numerous methods for the preparation of Ba-Al alloys have been published, a few of which1-4 are cited here. Most of these methods were found to be quite elaborate, involving the reduction of BaO, and not too well adapted for the close control of the final composition of small amounts of alloys prepared for laboratory use. A simple laboratory method for the preparation of Ba-A1 alloys in small batches starting from pure metals was devised, so that it was possible to control the desired compositions to within 1 pct. The pertinent features of the alloy system Ba-Al5 are 1) an intermediate compound BaAl, with the melting point of 1050°C, and 2) a eutectic between aluminum and BaAl4 at 98 pct Al. The accompanying sketch shows the experimental arrangement for the preparation of the alloys. Weighed amounts of aluminum and barium were placed in an alumina and a stainless steel crucible, respectively. According to the supplier's specification, the purity of the metals used in the alloys is as follows: a) aluminum rods—99.9 pct Al, and b) barium rods—99.5 pct Ba. The stainless steel crucible, tapered at the bottom and having a 1/16 in. diam hole, rested on top of the alumina crucible. The assembly was placed inside a graphite sleeve which rested on a refractory platform. The platform moved the assembly up and down through the field of a radio frequency coil. A glass bell jar was placed between the crucible assembly and the radio frequency coil to maintain a steady flow of helium around the melt. A small window was cut out on the wall of the alumina crucible to observe the progress of the re- action and to record the temperature with an optical pyrometer. The platform was first raised high enough to move the barium out of the radio frequency coil field in order to allow only the aluminum to melt. The assembly was then lowered so that the barium began to melt and flow out through the small orifice into the molten aluminum. In order to keep the violence of the exothermic reaction under control, the rate of flow of barium was carefully regulated by raising or lowering the crucible assembly. All the samples prepared by this technique were examined by a Norelco X-ray diffractometer using CuKa radiation, The diffraction specimens were prepared by placing the finely powdered samples in flat specimen holders. The Ba-Al alloys prepared with a high barium content were found to consist mainly of BaAl4. The structure of BaAl4 has previously been reported by Alberti and Andress.8 They found that BaAl4 was body-centered-tetragonal with an a0 = b0 = 4.530Å and c0 = 11.14Å. An alloy whose composition was found by chemical analysis to be almost 100 pct BaA1, was used to determine the relative intensities. The d-spacings were obtained from the same alloy to which a small amount of tungsten had been added as a calibrating material. Accurate values for a, and c, were calculated according to the method proposed by Taylor and Floyd.' The calculated values are: a, = b, = 4.566Å and c0 = 11.250Å. The measured d-values for BaAl4 are shown in Table I along with relative peak intensities above background and hkl indices. Acknowledgment The authors are grateful to L. J. In order that the reader may not be misled, I feel it necessary to comment upon the title of this paper. "Laws of Rock Behavior," one may take as being part of the all-embracing "Law of Nature" and this, according to the Oxford Dictionary, relates to the principles of conduct recognized as being pleasing to God. I feel it would be presumptuous to erect a code of rock behavior on this basis, so turn to a secondary definition, namely that a "Law" is that which is intrinsically reasonable. It is extremely unlikely that any group of geologists, or workers in rock mechanics would be in complete agreement about what could be taken to be "intrinsically reasonable." Therefore, this paper does not present any deified utterances, but rather deals with a few aspects of rock behavior which I consider to be intrinsically reasonable and with which I hope the reader will concur. The mode of behavior of rocks in the Earth's crust covers the range from wholly brittle to completely ductile ; with a deformation time scale which may be measured in milliseconds, for some events such as meteoritic impact, or in millions of years for the tectonic deformation involved in mountain building. A complete survey is, of course, outside the scope of an introductory paper, so I must be both brief and selective in my treatment. Any attempt to establish the mode of rock behavior in the Earth's crust should take into account data and relationships established in laboratory experiments and correlate these with field evidence. Consequently, the first section of this paper presents a brief discussion of the experimental aspects of rock mechanics which are pertinent to the subsequent discussion.

The static, rapid, and shock-loading response of rock is of interest to many in the field of rock mechanics. For example, the effects of loading rates on strength and stress-strain characteristics of rock are quite important in defining input loading for use in the design of underground protective installations. Response data on rock subjected to shock loading over a wide range of pressures are also vital in the field of underground nuclear testing. In addition, material response is needed in design of shock-absorbing liners. A number of investigators have reported that ultimate compressive strength of rock increases with increased rates of loading.1-6 Wuerker3 stated that modulus of elasticity, obtained from sonic determinations, increased in some rocks by a factor as high as 4.5. It appears that only a limited amount of work has been done on comparing static modulus and modulus obtained from impact testing.6 Phillips4 showed that with increased rates of loading the deformation decreased. More recent work by Atchley and Furr5 showed that when moderate-strength concrete is stressed with increased loading rates, the axial strain at failure increased. One would expect this to occur if we think in terms of purely elastic materials. For example, if E is constant and maximum strength [amax], increases, the axial strain would also increase. However, in rock testing thus far we have worked almost exclusively with nonhomogeneous and inelastic rocks. From this fact alone the increase in axial strain with increased load application is noteworthy.

CHICAGO in the last week of June fulfilled all its promises to the visiting engineers except one. This holds true with respect to the activities of the Regional Meeting of the A. I. M. E. in particular and of Engineers' Week in general. No one expected to find much of the beautiful in the outward aspects of the Fair-the Century of Progress Exposition, to be more formal; but they expected novelty, color, and startling lighting effects at night, and they were in no sense disappointed. It has been said that the architecture is a portent of the style of the buildings of the future; most who have seen the Fair hope that this forecast will prove inaccurate. As to the exhibits themselves, they are splendid. They are in keeping with the theme of the Exposition-a Century of Progress in science, in engineering, in the industries based upon them. No attempt will be made here even to suggest the exhibits that are most interesting. There are plenty for every one; and any member of the Institute who has the opportunity should by all means visit Chicago before the end of October.

T HE 121st meeting of the Institute held in New York City, February 16 to 19, 1920, was a great success despite vicissitudes of weather of unusual severity. On account of tremendous snowstorms, only two members of the Canadian contingent arrived, and several of our members from the west arrived thirty hours late. Two weeks prior to the meeting, the heaviest snowstorm in 34 years wrecked the surface transportation in New York; and it was only by special dispensation that arrangements were effected, with the New York Street Cleaning Department to clear away 39th street in front of this building so that vehicles could reach the curb. The total registration of members and guests was 1138.
