The purposes of composition are various; one purpose, for instance, is to make a record for the writer's own use, as in a diary. That does not involve responsibility to others. There is also the writing meant to influence opinion-to be persuasive, and pleasing. With such writing we need not concern ourselves at this stage of our study. The prime purpose of technical writing is to be informative-to convey information; therefore it must" be clear beyond the chance of misunderstanding. Such clearness is impossible if meaningless or ill chosen, words are sprinkled through the text. Discard the trivial phrases that are constantly at your elbow. Brush aside a host of vapid superlatives. Metternich exclaimed:' "The superla¬tive is the mark of fools". It is a false emphasis, like the underlining in a school-girl's letter. For example, the little word `very' can be deleted nine times out of ten; it is an impediment to terse and perspicuous writing, as 'the multitudinous hand-baggage of the British tourist is to his travel. 'Very' supposes comparison. A mine with a 1000-ft. shaft is very deep to the scribe who writes from the Joplin district', in Missouri, but it seems a shallow hole to a man living at Calumet, Michigan. A vein that is 10 feet across may be considered very wide at Cripple Creek, Colorado, but it is only a `stringer' to the miner at the Homestake, in South Dakota. Ore assaying $20 in gold is very rich at Juneau, Alaska, where .10,000 tons of $1 ore is crushed daily, but it is relatively low-grade to the pocket-miner at Alleghany, in California. It is all a matter of comparison; unless the reader knows your standards of depth, width, or richness, your `very' has no significance. "Where erosion was very rapid or oxidation very shallow"

THE coal-fields of Missouri, situated hi the northern and western portion of the State, are distributed, in whole or in part, over 57 counties, embracing an area estimated by Mr. Broad-head to be practically 23,000 sq. miles, including small detached beds and outliers in St. Louis, St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties in the eastern part of the State. This area includes about 8,000 sq. miles of Upper or Barren Measures, 2,000 sq. miles of exposed Middle, and 12,420 sq. miles of exposed Lower Measures. In a general way, the Missouri coal-field is bounded on the east by an imaginary line entering the northern part of the State just east of the 92c1 Meridian and passing across the State in a southwesterly direction to a point on the Kansas-Missouri line a little below the southern boundary of Barton county. An important part of the field overlaps this line and extends down the northern side of the Missouri river, under¬lying the greater part of Randolph, Howard, Boone and Audrain counties. In all, 34 counties produced coal during the year 1903. Fig. 1 shows the position of the coal-fields in Missouri. GEOLOGICAL FEATURES. The Coal Measure formations, all of the Carboniferous age, rest unconformably upon the rocks of the sub-Carboniferous or Mississippian series, and, in some cases, upon the rocks of the Devonian and Silurian ages. I. LOCATION. THE Mojave mining district is situated in a group of small hills centering around Soledad peak, in the Mojave desert, Kern county, Cal. These hills are about 4.5 miles SSW. of Mojave, a railroad town at the junction of the Santa Fé and Southern Pacific railroads. The town of Mojave is about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, to which it is connected both by telegraph and by rail. The distance on the Southern Pacific railroad is 102 miles, covered in 3 hr. and 45 min. by express train. A sketch-map of this region is shown in Fig. 1. The Mojave district is relatively isolated. The only other mining towns in this section of California are Randsburg and Johannesburg, in a district (containing the well-known Yellow Aster mine) at the northern end of a low ridge of hills, which begins about 20 miles NE. of Mojave, runs nearly N. for 35 miles, and varies in width between 3 and 6 miles. As will be seen later, the origin and formation of these hills are not the same as those of Soledad peak. II. CLIMATE AND VEGETATION. The climate and vegetation of the Mojave district are typical of the arid regions of the southwestern United States. During the winter and spring there is some rainfall, and the tempera-ture is generally from 60° to 70° F. in the day-time. The rainfall in the spring is often very considerable for short spaces of time, and cloud-bursts are not infrequent. In summer there is continual sunshine, with temperatures, as a rule, exceeding 100° F. in the day-time, while 115° F. in the shade of a house is not at all unusual; but at night the temperature falls considerably. The increased importance and value of chemical analysis in connection with metallurgical operations is largely, if not entirely, due to the increased accuracy of the analytical methods used for the quantitative determination of the foreign elements always associated with the metal operated upon. This applies especially in the working of iron and steel, and to the determination of the amounts of such elements as phosphorus, carbon, and silicon. The influence of greater or smaller amounts of these elements upon the physical properties of iron and steel will be better understood when the proper experiments shall have been made upon samples whose chemical composition is known with almost absolute certainty. From the present standpoint of analytical chemistry, it is easy to see that at least one reason for the failure of many attempts to solve this problem, is the inaccuracy of the analytical methods used. Even at the present time the frequent want of agreement (over and above the unavoidable error due to manipulation) between chemists working on the same sample, leads one to think that there is still at least a choice in the methods used. The surface mining operations of the Simplot Fertilizer Co. are on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation approximately 16 miles east of Fort Hall, Idaho (Fig 1). The Phosphoria formation outcrops in sec. 2, 3, 11, 14, 15, 22 and 27, T 4 S, R 37 E, Boise Meridian. The ownership of these phosphate-bearing lands is divided between individual Indians and the Bannock-Shoshone Tribe, and the royalties are paid to the respective owners on a tonnage basis, as the rock is mined. The geology and mineral resources of the Fort Hall Reservation were studied by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1913 and reported on in 1920. † However, it was not until the winter of 1945 that exploratory work was undertaken by private enterprise. Phosphate ore is being mined at Monsanto Co.'s Henry mine, near Soda Springs, Idaho, for the company's three furnace elemental phosphorus plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. In stripping and mining, D-9 crawler tractors are utilized to rip and push-load rubber-tired scrapers. The equipment consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 657B scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12- month basis, two shifts per day, whereas mining is mainly in the summer months on a one-shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1 million tons of phosphate rock and 2.5-3 million cu yd of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor which owns, operates and maintains all equipment used. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis.

THE occurrence of copper ores at Garimenapenta, 14 59 min 30 sec N Lat., 79 33 min 10 sec E Long., in Nellore district, Madras State, India, has been examined and investigated on numerous occasions during the past two centuries.' No tangible orebody was ever located as a result of all the ex- tensive trenching and shafting done in the area by various agencies. However, during 1933 Messrs. Piepmeyer & Co., a German firm engaged by one of the leaseholders of the area, carried out an electrical survey using inductive methods.' On the basis of certain strong indications found in their survey, they recommended that the prospect be proved by drilling or shafting. But for want of financial backing no further work was carried out. When the Madras government more recently proposed investigation, Dr. Krishnan, then Supt. Drilling of the second shaft at Texas Gulf Sulphur Co.'s Cane Creek potash operation southwest of Moab, Utah, is perhaps the largest undertaking ever made by private industry in the field of rotary shaft drilling. The new shaft, known as No. 2, is located within the plant area, about 400 ft northeast of the No. 1 shaft. This location within the pillar of the first shaft allowed utilization of a great deal of in- formation gained prior to and during sinking of the original No. 1 shaft, a conventionally sunk 22-ft diam shaft 2789 ft deep. The No. 2 shaft will be used for auxiliary transportation of men and supplies, and is steel lined with a 48-in. ID casing. The top 825 ft of the shaft is in predominantly red sandstone with interbedded shales. From 825 ft to 2800 ft, which is the top of the salt beds, the rock is mostly limestone with interbeds of anhydrite and shale.

DRILLING in the Oligocene potash basin of Alsace prior to 1927 had shown important differences of level in the salt beds thus encountered. To explain this a somewhat unsatisfactory hypothesis of faulting had been advanced. During the latter part of 1926 and the beginning of 1927- our firm was engaged by two organizations for the purpose of trying to supplement, by an electrical survey, the geological data thus far collected. As a re-sult of this exploration it was possible to affirm that salt dome structures were present in the Oligocene basin of the Upper Rhine, something heretofore absolutely unknown in that region. Two salt domes were actually outlined, one, near Meyenheim, was made the subject of a communication to the Academy of Sciences, by G. Friedel2; the other, near Hettenschlag, was briefly dis-cussed by C. and M. Schlumberger3 before the same academy. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the strati-graphic and structural conditions of the area where these salt domes were found; to discuss the results of the electrical survey which led to the location of the domes, and indicate the new geological outlook which such a discovery suggests.

AN investigation of the fracture plane of titanium, containing 0.5 wt pct to 1 wt pct 0, was recently carried out by fracturing large-grain specimens in a tensile jig at room and liquid air temperature. The experiments were carried out on strip specimens 3 to 5 mm wide, 2 mm thick and about 100 mm long. The specimens consisted of several grains, each occupying the entire cross section of the strip and extending over a length varying from 5 to 20 mm. These specimens were prepared by a method described elsewhere.' The identification of the fracture plane was possible in twelve of approximately thirty crystals investigated. The recovery of copper by various combinations of processes centered around liquid ion exchange has certainly been accepted as a technically superior entity when compared to the widely applied classical method of cementation. While the technical aspect of liquid ion exchange processes has received much attention and acclaim through actual operating data, in particular the ease of handling solutions, percentage recovery, reduction of pollution, etc., the corresponding economic data has either gone unpublished or has been held confidential. Much of this economic data has now been made available for publication; and with this data, we at General Mills Chemicals, Inc., will attempt to present an accurate economic analysis of some liquid ion exchange plants and an economic comparison between these plants and the typical cementation facility.

Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U808. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U308 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pct U308 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8, with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct.

THE characteristics and uses of thermocouples of platinum and the platinum alloys being so well known, this paper will be confined to base-metal couples. During the past decade, there has developed a strong demand for thermocouples made of metals cheaper than the platinum alloys, and suitable for industrial heat measurements. Much research has been clone but only a very limited number of alloys have been found to possess the necessary characteristics for general technical use. In the development of thermocouple alloys it is necessary to consider the following points: The electromotive force and temperature relations; permanency or constancy; reproducibility; manufacturing difficulties; durability; and accuracy in use. The electromotive force developed by the thermocouple should increase with the rise of temperature according to some definite law. It is desirable that the electromotive force should vary directly with the temperature difference of its junctions, in other words, giving a curve linear or nearly so. It is also desirable that the resulting electromotive force be as large as possible for any given range of temperature, thereby insuring greater accuracy of readings.

First attempts to apply computers for the modeling, simulation and analysis of mineral processing unit operations date back to almost twenty years. Since then substantial efforts have been directed to the development of computer software for mineral processing. Current literature indicates considerable activities in the development of computer packages for interactive and batch simulation of individual unit operations and integrated plant operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of various simulation systems that have been described in the literature along with a discussion of present trends in the development of mineral processing simulation software. Finally, the paper includes a detailed discussion of the desirable features in future simulation packages.

IN 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the

MIXED emotions were produced by the announcement that the buildup of weapons will be stretched out till mid-1954 instead of the previous 1953 deadline. Reason: government assistance programs will be tougher to get but there will be easement in materials allocations. Earlier in February, DPA had announced that tightening up on regulations governing rapid tax -amortization would become effective March 1. In the future, DPA will have to certify amortization contracts for all construction and permanent installations costing more than $100,000. This action was necessary according to DPA's James F. King, so that new industrial expansions already approved could be assessed in the light of the changing critical mineral picture. When DMPA inherited the backlog of government assistance, requests from DMA, it moved in fast. The results of DMPA's work is described in the article on p. 351 by James K. Richardson; The speed with which these requests were approved and the lengthening of the military program have made a reappraisal of the critical mineral list necessary. It looks as though the consumer industries will be getting more metal soon and, led by steel, there is an industry push toward the abandonment of CMP. Relaxing of materials controls appears imminent but discontinuing CMP is in the "let's talk this thing over" stage.

THE outstanding engineering accomplishment of the last three decades has been the development and application of more and cheaper power and its use instead of the labor of men and animals. Substitution of power for manual labor has taken effect on every hand in the United States. With the aid of energy mechanically available to his hand, one man does the work that only a few years ago required two, three or even a greater number of laborers. The results in respect to the favorable economic effects are well known; namely, increased production, higher wages and lower costs. On the other hand, the vast social effects, both good and bad, have been none the less important, even if less understood and only casually regarded. The chief sources of energy today are the mineral fuels, coal and petroleum. In the United States they yield more than 90 per cent of the total energy demand. Thirty years ago the proportion of energy supplied by the mineral fuels was likewise above 90 per cent, but the division according to origin was very different. These relations. are shown for the years 1900, 1930 and 1950 in Table 1.

FRANK N. SPELLER,? Pittsburgh,. Pa.-Mr. -Hayward's paper again draws attention to the fact that copper in steel is not the enemy that a good many of us it one time thought it was. He shows clearly that steel with over 0.75 per cent. of copper is as dependable, under the :conditions which he describes, as the same steel without copper. I might add that you-can weld copper-steel- satisfactorily up to that point; in fact, we have succeeded in welding pipe by the lap weld process up to 1 per cent. copper. Notwithstanding the date that have been presented on the effects of copper on the physical properties and corrosion of steel, a maximum copper limitation is still found in many specifications. In some cases the limit is extremely low, such as below 0.05 .or 0.03: per cent., or thereabout. That is a relic of days gone by, and I think the practice should be discouraged. E. F.
