(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) WHILE remodeling No. 1 section of the concentrator at the Washoe Reduction Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. during the summer of 1912, for the purpose of ascertaining what additional metal recoveries could be made by improvements in concentration practice which had been developed by the staff of the Boston & Montana Reduction Department, at Great Falls, it was deemed advisable to carry on some experiments on the treatment of the regular mill tailings by roasting and leaching, to see whether the losses of metal values might not be still further decreased. In the course of these experiments about 5,000 tons of tailings were roasted, and of the resulting calcine about 200 tons were leached. The results were so satisfactory that it was decided to continue the work on a larger scale, particularly as regards the leaching end of the process, and construction work on an 80-ton roasting and leaching plant was accordingly commenced during the latter part of February, 1913, and is being pushed as rapidly as possible. 80-Ton Leaching Plant. This plant will consist of one 20-ft. roasting furnace of the MacDougall type, specially adapted to the work of roasting for leaching; two leaching tanks, .32 ft. in diameter by 12 ft, deep, together with the necessary solution tanks, air lifts, precipitating launders, etc. It has been decided to precipitate the copper from solution on scrap iron, so as not to hamper the roasting and leaching departments by any weakness that might develop in the precipitating department. It is, however, the intention to experiment with a number of different methods of precipitation ; for example, by electrolysis and by hydrogen sulphide.

OF late considerable experimental and, theoretical interest has been shown in the rates of transformation from a single phase, usually a supercooled solid solution, into one or more phases. Such reactions may involve both diffusion and transformation of the major constituent, as in iron alloys, or it may simply involve diffusion, as in superstructure forma-tion and in age-hardening systems. Most of the work has been confined to ferrous alloys1-9t although two investigations have been made on copper alloys10,11. That such work may be of considerable, practical importance has been demonstrated by Bain12, by the workers at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut fur Eisen-forschung13,14, and by the everyday use of precipitation and age-harden-inn principles15. Experiments in this country have generally followed Davenport and Bain's technique of rapid supercooling followed by isothermal treatment. In Germany16,17 the work has been extended to the study of the influence of accurately controlled and measured rates of cooling. The work on steel indicates that there are two subcritical temperature ranges where reaction starts sooner after quenching and proceeds at a more rapid rate than at other temperatures. At subcritical temperatures above Ar" where reaction is dependent upon atomic migration there is a period of time of which the length depends upon the alloy content and the temperature, before which no reaction has been detected. The: structure of anodic films formed on aluminum and other metals under varied conditions is not well known despite the wide use of such films both as protective coatings and as the dielectric medium in electrolytic condensers. The present work was undertaken as a survey of the possibilities of electron diffraction in the investigation of anodic films, especially in comparing the properties of anodic films formed under different sets of conditions and subjected to various subsequent treatments. In addition, an effort has been made to compare surface films formed on aluminum by anodic treatment with surface films formed by heating, immersion in chemicals, etc. The elcctron diffraction method in many cases has been successfully applied to the study of thin surface films. Its principal advantage is that it can be used without removing the films from the base material upon which they have been formed. The low penetrating power of electrons, in the "reflection" diffraction method which has been used in this work, prevents the appearance of diffraction patterns from substances at depths greater than about 100 Angstrom units (lop6 cm.). Different investigations of the structure of anodic films have showll widely varying results, depending on the methods used in preparing the films. Apparently under some conditions these films are crystalline and under other conditions they are amorphous, and it has been difficult to say which type of structure will be found in any particular case. Schmid and Wassermann's1 X-ray diffraction patterns of eloxal‡ films show two broad, diffuse bands, which these investigators attribute to finely divided cubic y-Al2O3.§ Burgers, Claassen, and Zernicke³ obtained sharp X-ray

Ore deposits are commonly divided into two classes, syngenetic and epigenetic, according to whether the ore was deposited together with the enclosing rock or was introduced after its deposition or solidification. Epigenetic deposits, which are by far the more important class, owe their formation to the channels that permitted the ingress of their metals, and both classes are subject to great modification by post-mineral changes in the containing rocks. A discussion of the structural features of rocks, therefore, necessarily precedes any consideration of ore deposits or processes of ore deposition. The arrangement of sediments in parallel and approximately horizontal layers is called stratification, and is an original prop¬erty of sedimentary rocks. Successive strata of the same sedimentary bed commonly differ from each other in some minor characteristic, such as texture or color, which results in a bedded or stratified appearance. The subjection of a rock to pressure develops within it parallel planes of weakness, called cleavage planes, along which the rock breaks into relatively regular slabs or blocks; the direc¬tion of these cleavage planes, which bear no relation to stratifica¬tion, is determined by the direction of the pressure that produced them. Where there are more than one set of cleavage planes, one of them is likely to be more prominent than the others. In sedimentary rocks, the cleavage may coincide with the stratifica¬tion but more commonly cuts across it. Van Hise has defined cleavage as the "capacity present in some rocks to break in some directions more easily than in others." Cleavage, therefore, does not imply the existence of subdivisions, but rather the tendency to subdivide along certain planes.

INTEREST in the use of graphite as a high-temperature engineering structural material has recently increased markedly. However, actual use of this material has been limited, in part because information about its high-temperature mechanical properties has been lacking. The information needed includes not only reliable values for the properties, but also how to control these properties. Malmstrom, Keen, and Greenl have reported on the tensile and creep properties of some graphites above 2700° F (1500°C). They observed measurable creep under tensile loading at 4000 OF (2200 °C) and higher, with elongations of about 7 pct at 4500°F. Their typical elongation-vs-time curve showed the normal three stages of creep found for many metals at elevated temperatures. The specimens used were heated by passing an electric current through them. This method of heating caused a significant difference between the surface and axis temperatures, and may have affected the results. More recent work by kattus, in which the specfinens were also heated by their own resistance, showed very little plastic deformation for either slow or fast tensile testing or for creep testing. Work at this Laboratory, already reported,3 showed that for temperatures above 4500 "F and under conditions of slow tensile loading some commercial graphites exhibited elongations up to 20 pct. The work reported here is the continuation of a study of the tensile creep behavior of some commercially available synthetic graphites at temperatures up to 5300°F, and is preliminary to a more systematic investigation of the variables governing the high-temperature mechanical properties of graphite. MATERIALS TESTED The tests were conducted on six blocks from four lots of synthetic graphite bearing four different commercial-grade designations. These blocks were selected because their tensile stress—strain properties had been determined in previous work.3 Table I pre- sents the available information, supplied by the producers, on the processing of these materials. Also included in this Table are the densities and the tensile strengths at room temperature and 4500°F determined by the authors. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The furnace used to heat the specimens for testing is shown in Fig. 1. The heating element was a graphite tube, 3-in. OD by 2 1/2 in. ID by 24 in. length. In a paper by Abrahamson and Alexander concerning a series of correlations between electronic structure and property changes, it was hypothesized that each solute atom in a dilute solution had a characteristic volume of solvent atoms over which some form of electronic interaction occurred. From this description it is possible to picture the solute atoms as occurring in an ordered array for the most efficient arrangement. A recent review article2 has shown that some form of anomaly exists for a whole series of properties when dilute additions of tungsten are made to iron, of. Fig. 1. Any mechanism to fit one property must also be amenable to mechanisms for the other properties. The possibility of some structural change in this region appears to offer the best hope. The system chosen for investigation was the iron tungsten system. Zone-refined iron with zone-leveled tungsten additions were supplied by Materials Research Corp. as 3/8-in.-diam bars. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the structure. One-quarter inch specimens of each alloy were cold-rolled to 10-mil sheets, cleaned, punched to electron-microscope specimen-holder size, and annealed in vacuum for 2 hr at 800°C and 2 hr at 700°C followed by a furnace cool. The specimens were attached to a platinum wire and the specimen edge and wire were painted prior to thinning in a solution of 10 pct perchloric acid in glacial acetic acid. It was believed that if ordering were present due to electronic interactions the polishing procedure chosen would provide a simultaneous combination of chemical attack and electropolishing to exhibit the ordered structure. The chemical attack would be expected to penetrate those areas equidistant from the tungsten atoms, while the electropolishing would serve to "plane off" the volumes where the chemical attack had taken place. If one of the ordered tungsten planes were parallel to the specimen face at the edge of the thinned hole, a plate or micalike structure would be expected. A typical result of this polishing is shown in Fig. 2. Here a series of plates can be seen lying one upon the other. In several other specimens the plates parallel to the electron beam have been observed, behaving like slices of bread in a loaf. These edge views coupled with moire patterns indicate that the minimum plate thickness is 37 to 42A. This is equivalent to a concentration of 455 at. ppm of W if a simple cubic superlat-tice exists, or one tungsten atom every twelve iron atoms on the ordered plane. It was further noted that the base iron exhibited no signs of platelike structure. As the concentrations increased above 100 at. ppm W the amount of plate material increased. PrePatory Note.—The first part of this paper was sent to me by Mr. Emrich nearly nine months ago; and I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before off'ering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it ill some respects clearer and more cornplete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.—A. Eilers. I. Partial ReFining iN the ANode-Furnace. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 30 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furuace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace—afterwards casting to anodes and refining elec-trolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

This paper describes a metallographic investigation of the influence of tungsten or molybdenum additions upon the transformation and precipitation reactions occurring in Co-rich Co-Cr alloys. It is shown that tungsten has little effect upon the a-ß transformation temperature range, while molybdenum tends to raise it. Both elements tend to promote the formation of ? phase, molybdenum being more potent in this respect than tungsten. HIGH temperature alloys, that is, alloys which have load-carrying ability at elevated temperatures, have been developed at an increasing rate during the past few years. This has resulted from the requirements in the design of modern aircraft engines. Although many alloys of this type are available, they have been developed on an empirical basis. Metallurgists do not have a clear understanding of the phases or structures that are responsible for these high temperature properties. In order to determine why these alloys possess this particular ability, a project was started at Battelle Memorial Institute with the object of learning more about the fundamental factors which promote high temperature strength in alloys. This study was to include a correlation of microstructure and the high temperature properties of Vitallium, an alloy which is widely used for high temperature service. Vitallium is a complex material both from the standpoint of composition and microstructure. Consequently, it was necessary to obtain informa- tion regarding the phase relationships in this alloy. The Co-Cr binary diagram was determined as the first phase of this investigation.' A second paper described the effects of iron, nickel, or nitrogen on the reactions occurring in the Co-rich end of this system.' The present paper covers a continuation of this investigation in which the effects of tungsten or molybdenum on the reactions occurring in Co-rich, Co-Cr-base alloys were determined. Preparation of 'rest Materials Two series of ternary Co-Cr-base alloys, representing Co-Cr ratios of 80:20 and 68:32 ( Cr x 100 =20 and 32 ) , were prepared containing ( Co + Cr = up to 6 pct W and up to 12 pct Mo. Melting stock consisted of electrolytic Co, electrolytic Cr, 99.9 pct pure W, and 99.9 pct pure Mo. Table I lists the chemical analyses of these materials. This paper describes the building and testing of a prototype welded aluminum truck body to a new design concept. The results of these tests are given along with an outline of further developments in the design and field application of aluminum bodies. The results of field service history are recorded with special reference to types of mining operations, service performance, wear, maintenance and economics of operation. Mention is made of current U.S. usage and predictions given as to future development of aluminum bodies in the mining industry. The use of aluminum for off-highway truck bodies in hauling rock for the mining and construction industries is by no means the novelty that it may seem. In 1932 an aluminum unit proved very satisfactory in service on the Hoover Dam project but at that time the only high strength aluminum alloys available were not weldable and with the high cost of construction, a sound economic case for an aluminum body could not be made. After World War I1 great advances in aluminum welding techniques, using the inert gas shield, combined with the development of high strength alloys with good welded properties and welding characteristics changed the whole picture. Welded aluminum bodies were rapidly developed and by 1958 attention was again focused on the use of aluminum for off-highway truck bodies. EARLY DEVELOPMENT WORK In 1959 Alcan, the Aluminum Co. of Canada, embarked on an extensive development program to prove the durability and economics of aluminum truck bodies for the mining and construction industries. The first step was to design a prototype aluminum body which took particular advantage of the fact that the modulus of aluminum is only one third that of steel. This means that within the elastic range, aluminum moves three times as much as steel which makes it more flexible and capable of absorbing much greater impact shocks. A body was built and mounted on a 22-ton truck and taken to the Jeffery Mine of Canadian Johns Manville Company at Asbestos, P.Q., Canada. Very little information was available as to the order of stresses that were set up in off-highway truck bodies and so it was therefore decided to carry out a test program to find out this information.

Drilling activity in California during 1939 decreased approximately 15 per cent from that of the previous year. New reserve discoveries were the lowest in many years, but extensions, development of deeper sands, and reappraisals, indicated enough new potential to more than equal 1939 withdrawals of about 223,644,000 barrels. On June 1 a new uniform method of allocation was adopted, which had the immediate effect of reducing production, so that approximately 6,000,000 bbl. of crude were withdrawn from storage during the year. Market demand averaged 628,845 bbl. per day as compared with a daily production of 612,945 barrels. The rate of drilling was slow during the first five months because of the unfavorable storage situation. Subsequent to the adoption of the new uniform method of allocation on June 1, drilling was speeded up and continued at a rapid rate throughout the remainder of the year. As a result of prospecting, four new fields were discovered and seven fields were measurably extended. All of the new discoveries were made in the San Joaquin Valley. Statistics of production and development arc given in Fig. 1 and Tables 1 to 3. New Discoveries Coalinga-Northeast.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation discovered a second Eocene shore-line field north of the Coalinga Nose when it brought in well S.P.L. 7-17 in sec. 17-19-16, flowing 4230 bbl. of 32.4" gravity oil and 14,200,000 cu. ft. of gas at a depth of 8237 ft., from the "Gatchell" sand of Eocene age. This field, 2 miles north of the Coalinga Nose field, is considered to be a separate structure because it has a gas cap and a lower water table. The structure is a broad, gentle anticlinal nose probably separated from the southerly Coalinga Nose field by a shallow syncline. Production is sealed updip by the pinching out of oil sands. The average sand thickness is approximately 200 ft., the top 75 ft. containing mainly gas. The sand has an average permeability of 1000 millidarcys and an average porosity of 25 per cent. The productivc area of the field is estimated to be between 1200 and 1500 acres.

A study utilizing neutron diffraction, electrical resistance, and chemical extraction has been carried out to clarify the chromium-rich part of the miscibility gap previously proposed for this system. This gap appears to be more symmetrical than previously supposed and is very flat. This flatness is believed to be the result of a cooperative phenomenon perhaps of magnetic origin; in particular, it is believed that the chromium-rich phase is antiferromagnetic. The presence of antiferromagnetism is believed to result in an additional strengthening mechanism very sinzilar to that for ordered precipitates. Likewise, it is proposed that the quenched alloys which are known to be ferromagnetic have antiferromagnetic regions which accounts for the maximum in hardness around 75 pct Cr. It is also believed that the existence of antiferromagnetism in other alloys of transition elements might explain some of their anomolous characteristics. Dimensional changes generally occur during the sintering of metal powder compacts. These changes may have several causes and their magnitude depends upon the numerous variables involved in the process, such as the nature of the powder, size and shape of the grains, compacting pressure, rate of heating, maximum temperature, length of time at temperature, and furnace atmosphere. Among all the variables, time, temperature, and compacting pressure are probably the most important ones, and the effect of each one of the other variables can be studied separately once the effect of these is well understood. The most precise method of studying the phenomenon of dimensional changes in a compact consists of heat treating the compacts at various temperatures for different lengths of time. In this method, only very small specimens can be used, in order to achieve rapid rates of heating and cooling. The technique involved in these measurements is very simple, but is time consuming. Another experimental approach to the problem consists of measuring the change in length of a compact as it is being heated at a constant rate. Although the two variables, time and temperature, are combined into a single one (rate of heating), the results obtained by this technique may be of great interest from both practical and theoretical points of view. The purpose of this paper is to describe a systematic investigation of the change in length during sintering of compacts made of one or several metal powders. Experimental Procedure The change in lenght of compacts during sintering was measured with an automatic recording dilatometer. In this instrument the change in length and the temperature are recorded as functions of time on two separate charts and the rates of heating and cooling may be varied from 1 to 20°F per min. The temperature may be kept constant at any value up to 2200°F during any predetermined length of time and the change in length recorded as a function of time. Provision is made for atmosphere control inside the fused silica tube containing the specimen. Three different magnifications are provided, so that 1 in. on the chart corresponds to 0.002, 0.005, or 0.010 in. change in length. The mechanism following the change

The Mojave mining district is situated in a group of small hills centering around Soledad peak, in the Mojave desert, Kern county, Cal. These hills are about 4.5 miles SSW. of Mojave, a railroad town at the junction of the Santa Fé and Southern Pacific railroads. The town of Mojave is about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, to which it is connected both by telegraph and by rail. The distance on the Southern Pacific railroad is 102 miles, covered in 3 hr. and 45 min. by express train. A sketch-map of this region is shown in Fig. 1. The Mojave district is relatively isolated. The only other mining towns in this section of California are Randsburg and Johannesburg, in a district (containing the well-known Yellow Aster mine) at the northern end of a low range of hills, which begins about 20 miles NE. of Mojave, runs nearly N. for 35 miles, and varies in width between 3 and 6 miles. As will be seen later, the origin and formation of these hills are not the same as those of Soledad peak. II. Climate and VEgetation. The climate and vegetation of the Mojave district are typical of the arid regions of the southwestern United States. During the winter and spring there is some rainfall, and the tempera ture is generally from 60" to 70" F. in the day-time. The rainfall in the spring is often very considerable for short spaces of time, and cloud-bursts are not infrequent. In summer there is continual sunshine, with temperatures, as a rule, exceeding 100" F. in the day-time, while 115" F. in the shade of a house is not at all unusual; but at night the temperature falls considerably. EXTENSIVE progress has been made in the metallurgy of alloys for die castings. Enthusiastic proponents of some alloys are inclined to make extravagant claims for their materials, which may be justified by physical tests on test bars made from the respective alloys but are seldom justified by the results obtained with commercial die castings made from those alloys. Chemical analysis of the test bars and castings fails to determine the cause of these variations, since they are due to other physical factors entering into the commercial production of die castings. In this paper, an attempt will be made to outline some of the factors in commercial die-casting practice to which these variable results may be attributed, in the hope that the manufacturer of die castings, recognizing the importance of these factors, will devote more attention to them in the design and construction of dies and equipment. In 1914,1 the author defined die castings as "metal castings made by forcing molten metal, underpressure, into metallic molds or dies." This definition was given in order to differentiate die castings from other molded metal products such as "permanent-mold" castings, "slush" castings and similar products that are sometimes erroneously termed die castings. The term "die casting" could be interpreted to include all castings made in metal molds or dies; but since this term, like most of our technical nomenclature, has been developed by commercial practice we must look to this practice for its proper definition. The Germans, with their usual devotion to descriptive names, have adopted the name of spritzguss (squirt cast) for die castings. Undoubtedly this name is more descriptive of the die-casting process, where the metal is literally squirted into the die and serves to differentiate this process from other metal mold processes, where the metal is poured into the die. In the earlier paper mentioned, the author also emphasized the fact that the definition given for die castings indicated clearly that the satisfactory operation of the process must comprise three factors, all of which must be considered of vital importance to the successful operation of the die-casting process:

Steel as it is poured, or teemed, into the mold for forming the ingot may be broadly separated into two divisions; i.e., effervescing or gassy steel, also termed evolution steel, and non-effervescing or killed steel, also termed solution steel. Between these primary divisions there are various types having the characteristics of both divisions but really nut belonging to either; such steels are termed semi-piping, rising, or wild, as the type may be. True effervescing steel should contain large volumes of gases, which are evolved while the metal is being teemed from the ladle nozzle into the mold, and continue to escape while the temperature of the steel is falling prior to its solidification the top of the ingot remaining liquid, due to the evolution of gases, until an ingot skin of considerable thickness has been formed. These gases consist principally of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and ammonia. It is generally understood that nitrogen gases are the first evolved and these form the skin blowliolcs, troublesome at times, in the solidifying ingot. Ingots made of effervescing steel will always contain a large number of blowholes. Such blowholes are not deemed objectionable in certain products if they occur well inside the ingot where they will not be subjcct to oxidation upon cooling, reheating, and rolling or forging of the ingot. Very little top or bottom discard is taken from this type of ingot, as pipes, or large shrinkage cavities, at the upper portion of the ingot do not usually occur, the difference in volume between the liquid and the solid steel (6 to 10 per cent.) being compensated by the innumerable blowholes distributed throughout the body of the ingot. Of the 40,000,000 tons of steel made in the United States during the year 1919, at least 35,000,000 tons of ingots were made of gassy or semi-gassy steel. Killed, or solution, steel is termed true piping steel from the characteristic pipe or shrinkage cavity that usually occurs in the uppermost central portion of the ingot.

Rapid exhaustion of iron ore in Minnesota's Mesabi range has led the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. to develop the world's largest open quarry mine for magnetite iron ore, at Star Lake, N. Y. Already contributing more than one eighth of the total iron ore used by the Corporation, the expanding Benson mines are destined to become Jones & Laughlin's important source of ore within the next ten years. In 1947 over 650,000 long tons of high-grade ore was produced. Output this year is expected to reach 800,000 long tons and studies are under way to increase production further. For years the geographical isolation of the Southern iron-ore district from the great producing centers in the North and East enabled it to meet its conditions and solve its own problems without regard to the practices and policies of other districts, but during the past few years distances have been shortened, practices and wages are being standardized, and these changing conditions have brought new problems to the South. Development of Pig Iron in the South The development of the pig-iron business in the South was very slow during its early years, gained speed rapidly in the latter part of the nineteenth century, reached its peak in 1918 and was on the decline before the depression that began in the latter part of 1929. The first blast furnace in Alabama was built at Cedar Creek in 1818, the year before the state was admitted to the union. In 1830, Daniel Hillman was sent from Tuscaloosa to found an iron works in Roupes Valley, where rich pockets of brown ore were numerous. He built a forge on the site of what later became Tannehill furnace and called it the Roupes Valley Iron Works. There pots, pans, plows, and horseshoes were made of metal from his Catalon forge; shaped by a large hammer operated by water power. Daniel Hillman died in 1832 and the ironworks lay idle until 1836, when Col. Ninion Tannehill bought the property, rebuilt the forge and, using slave labor from his plantation, operated and enlarged the works. By 1845 he had built two crude furnaces and did a flourishing business in ovens, skillets and kettles, which found a good market all over the South. In 1855, the plant was sold by Colonel Tannehill to Moses Stroup, an experienced ironmaster from Pennsylvania. He tore down the old furnaces and built a new plant, the ruins of which stand today (Fig. l). This furnace plant operated continuously until it was destroyed by Northern troops in 1865. It was never rebuilt, so that the shell in the picture is the same furnace that made many tons of guns and shells for the Confederacy during the war period.

This paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. Capacity Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a given time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: Tr = TR80K'K" [I] in which Tr, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific-gravity range—2.5 to 2.7—T should be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppardl has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5:=:0,6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:o.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for —I50 + 200-mesh pyrite to be I.4: I:0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciabie tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product. The Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, has developed a simple procedure for determining the coefficients of linear thermal expansion of rocks by means of resistance wire (SR-4) strain gauges. Gauges are cemented to the surfaces of specimens, which are then brought alternately to temperatures of 35OF and 1350F. Results are accurate to the seventh decimal place. IN the course of investigations of the thermal properties of various rocks proposed for use as aggregates in concrete structures, a relatively rapid method of determining coefficients of linear thermal expansion was required. A method which proved to be satisfactory for this purpose was developed in the petrographic laboratory of the Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, at Clinton, Miss. The method is based on the fact that strain effects in a specimen can be determined by measuring variations in the resistance of an electrical conductor firmly cemented to the surface of the specimen. Equipment for the determination of strain, electrically, has been developed by the Baldwin-South-wark Division of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. This equipment includes small strain gauges made of coils of resistance wire bonded between thin sheets of paper (SR-4 gauges), and a portable "Strain Indicator" which records variations in the length of the gauges in microinches per inch. Gauges of this type are now in general use for determinations of various mechanically-induced strains, but their use for the determination of coefficients of thermal expansion appears to be a new application. The advantages of the method are that the test specimens may be relatively small and require only a minor amount of preparation, that a large number of tests can be run at the same time, and that the installation and operation of the equipment is relatively simple. The method and equipment described are now in regular use for determining the coefficients of linear thermal expansion of rock samples submitted to this laboratory. Rocks which have been tested include granites, syenites, gabbros, and other igneous rocks, limestones and dolomitic limestones, sandstones, and quartzites. Specimen Preparation: To standardize the conditions of the tests, the rock specimens are sliced by diamond saw into slabs about 11/2x11/4 in. In the case of bedded or foliated rocks, three oriented slabs are cut from the same specimen, and represent, respectively, a direction in a plane of the bedding or foliation of the rock; a direction along the bedding or foliation and at a right angle to the first; and a direction across the planes of bedding or foliation. One of the large surfaces of each slab is lapped for a few minutes with No. 100 abrasive powder to remove saw scars and irregularities.
