The Raub Gold Mines are situated approximately in the centre of the Malayan Peninsula in the State of Penang. Part of the area, now known as "Raubhole," was opencut some 800 years ago by the Mon Khmers, a Cambodian people, whose vestiges mark numerous outcrops in South Eastern Asia. With their decline and extinction the work was abondoned, leaving a large pond in a dense thicket of Beluka (secondary growth).From the year 1885 onwards the history of Raubhole and the water therein records a chain sale starting from an enterprising local "Rajah," who had "assumed" authority, to an equally wakeful Singapore Arab; thence through the agency of a "down-and-out" beachcomber to a hopeful Australian company in the "goldbrick" days. Subsequent catastrophe on a depleted stringer was followed by reconstruction; the deserved reward of a long mining life, and an output of nearly 800,000 ounces of gold. Owing to the loss of notes and data stored in Singapore, this paper is not as complete as it should be, especially in respect to its metallurgical phases. Apologies are therefore tendered in advance for any deficiencies which may be noted.The necessary regional geological data have been taken largely from the admirable investigation of the Raub area by J. A. Richardson, A.R.C.S., B.Sc., F.G.S., of the Malayan Geological Survey*, and, throughout the paper, months represent lunar periods of 28 days and money is expressed in sterling.MINING SECTIONSAs shown hereunder the reef system has been divided by nature into seven isolated sections, which have been of necessity worked as seven separate small mines. From north to south these are:-(a) Sungei Agas consisting of very shallow workings to the south of, and adjacent to, a granite-porphyry mass known as Bukit (hill) Kajang. This area has not been worked for many years.(b) Bukit Malaka which is also shallow.(c) Bukit Jalis.(d) Bukit Koman which, with (c) and (e), consitutes the main workings and which has possibly been determined in depth.(e) Anderson Section.(I) Raubhole Section.(g) The workings under Raub Village.

Some 50 miles of tunnel have been driven in the Snowy Mountains Area since tunnelling commenced in 1951. Hates have improved progressively due to the know-how of American supervision and use of large matched equipment of modern design.The work has been carried out by contractors, working almost exclusively under schedule of rates contracts. The Authority has maintained active research into tunnelling problems, especially that of support, and this has resulted in considerable economies and improved rates of progress. The contractors also have sought economies both by management and equipment techniques. Ammonium nitrate came into favour as an explosive essentially because of its lower cost, and handling techniques have improved progressively. Rock conditions preclude use of the "Mole" type equipment in its present stage of development, but one contractor introduced the "sliding floor" and this could exert a great influence on future tunnelling methods.Examination of tunnels that have been in service for some time confirmed the quality of the work and endorsed the policy of continued research and development.GENEHALThe Snowy Mountains Scheme provides for the diversion of the Snowy and Eucumbene waters through two transmountain tunnels to the western river systems. These diversions, together with additional regulations provided for waters already flowing inland, will provide an average additional discharge of 1,818,000 ac it per year for irrigation.Furthermore, approximately 6,000 million kWh of electrical energy will be generated annually in power stations with a total installed capacity of some 3,000,000 kW (Fig. 1.).INVESTIGATIONThe aim of investigation work is firstly to collect sufficient information to allow the overall scheme to be planned and then to follow up with detailed information on eachproject. Obviously, the paramount advantages of contract mining have been recognised by mine developers throughout Australia, as evidenced by surface gold mining operations of significant output almost exclusively being performed under contract. These paramount advantages of using an experienced professionally managed contractor result from the mine developer being freed from financing the required relatively large capital expenditure at current relatively high interest rates or in a capital scarce stock market, and from the need to recruit and sustain a large operating work force in a competitive labour market.

Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have 'been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain's Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain's Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot's Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating's Section to the south. The Keating's Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as' to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the 'east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. Two Rb-Sr ages are discernible in data concerning the leucocratic granite which is the youngest pre-sedimentation phase of the crystalline basement complex at Rum Jungle, Northern Territory, Australia. Whole-rockdata suggest that intrusion of this unit took place at about 2400 my ago, with a probable initial ratio around o·707; whole rock-potassium feldspar tie-lines indicate redistribution of strontium at about 1800 my ago. The former age correlates with other measurements on rocks which form basement to the mantling Pine Creek Geosyncline; the latter correlates also with isotopic evidence for regional metamorphism and emplacement of some younger intrusive granites elsewhere within the geosyncline. A few K-Ar ages, from scattered localities, conform generally with the later event or events which appear to have some connection with the structural deformation clearly observable both in the complex and the surrounding metasediments. It is these younger events which appear to match the residual evidence for the earliest detectable concentration of uranium minerals in the Alligator Rivers district.

The Thames Goldfi.eld has been a major gold resource in the west of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, with the Waiotahi quartz vein system forming a large part of the field. Mineralisation is hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks. Both massive columnar-jointed and fragmental volcanic rocks are present. The vein system is dominated by the steeply dipping NE striking Waiotahi-Cambria vein, and associated splays. Hydrothermal alteration increases in intensity from isolated blocks of propylitic altered andesitic material, into the intensely clay altered equivalent. Low rank propylitic alteration is typified by chlorite, calcite and pyrite, with local illite or epidote. Clay alteration is characterised by illite, quartz, kaolinite and pyrite. While broadly forming halos around veining, intense clay alteration also occurs in strongly jointed portions of the hostrock.   Vein textures and the intense illitic clay alteration at Thames are similar to those in some of the other epithermal gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic zone, and in deposits of the Philippines, all related to andesitic terranes. Possible causes for textures and alteration being different in these deposits from the more classic Quartz-Adularia-Illite type epithermal systems may be that cooling/mixing rather than boiling dominates fluid evolution. Kaolinite may be also be a product of either of these different fluid types, or has resulted from overprinting of an illitic assemblage by downward percolation of acidic fluid.

The ocean floor is increasingly being discussed in terms of its resource potential. New discoveries, improved knowledge and access to unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf are some factors contributing to a renewed interest in the seafloor exploration and mining industry. The industry has been referred to as the ænext minerals frontierÆ. To date, much of the research has focused on proving economic and technical viability of the industry, with environmental issues addressed locally. However, there is limited research internationally, and none known in Australia that considers the social viability of the industry, addressing issues such as regulatory contexts, international precedence and public acceptability. Does the nascent seafloor exploration and mining industry have a social license to operate? Does it have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? The Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship explored these questions by scoping the social issues that would surround an expansion. Two desktop studies provide insight into the current level of activity in seafloor exploration and mining, recent developments and the regulatory regimes on which the industry is based. One study focused on the situation in Australia, while the other was internationally focused. A series of workshops were held with key stakeholders from government agencies, industry and other interested parties, such as environmental groups and the fisheries industry. These workshops identified and explored the different stakeholdersÆ perceptions of the benefits, concerns, opportunities and key questions associated with an expansion of the seafloor mining industry. The desktop studies revealed that Australia is one of only a few countries with legislation specific to seafloor exploration and mining. Nevertheless, barriers to licence approval exist because of lack of precedent in applying this legislation. Consequently, the decision process can be vulnerable to political issues and subjective judgements. The outcomes from the stakeholder workshops suggest this inconsistency may be influenced by the high levels of concern and uncertainty over environmental impacts. Uncertainty over environmental impacts can influence the acceptability of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and also mean the perception of risk is variable. Overall, this research suggests that the future of the seafloor exploration and mining industry will be highly dependent on AustraliaÆs ability to:improve the knowledge-base underpinning the regulatory regime,generate open and transparent communications between stakeholders, andimprove the understanding of policy and regulatory processes.

Geothermal gradients in the Gippsland Basin commonly exceed 35¦ C/km. Consequently models of thermal maturation may indicate exploration targets with an anomalous age/depth distribution. However regional geothermal models are constrained primarily by observations of surface heat flow. High geothermal gradients may simply reflect the presence of low conductivity coal beds within the basin. Heat flow data are not readily available for the Gippsland Basin. Normally special purpose drill holes are required to provide direct determinations of surface heat flow. These provide core samples for thermal conductivity and allow measurements of a stable geothermal gradient at least one year after drilling. Different indirect procedures are now required to provide estimates for the Gippsland Basin. Bottom hole temperatures can be used with suitable corrections to provide an indication of the regional geothermal gradient. However the corresponding thermal conductivities are more difficult to determine. Geophysical logs can be used to detect the major lithologies but detailed statistical analysis is required for numerical estimates. Complex mixing models are now suggested for geothermal surveys linking physical properties to variations in the mineralogy of each well. Allowing for low conductivity coal measures the data in the Gippsland Basin suggest values for heat flow consistent with regional trends in Australia. Interpretation is complicated by overprinting of transient thermal events with different time scales. Apart from the tectonics of basin evolution geothermal signatures may be complicated by regional ground water migration, the 'hot spot' trace associated with southward younging of Cainozoic volcanism, diagenesis, and basin refraction.

While the search for new technology breakthroughs is important, huge gains are still available by better using existing research outcomes. This potential remains untapped due to a combination of organisational 'silos', inappropriate performance measurement, and poor science in some areas. It is time to see the elephant in the mill.

A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

A novel, microaerobic, heterotrophic microbial leaching system for manganese dioxide is described. Mixed natural microflora were enriched by addition of sugars and crude plant nutrItIOnal supplements. Between 84 and 104 mg MnH was solubilized per gram sugar at I per cent (w/v) concentrations for fructose and galactose in the presence of 0.03 per cent w/v dried microalgae (a Chlamydomonas species). Some 42 per cent soluble manganese was dissolved by microbial action on MnO, (3 per cent (w/v) pulp density) using a 10 per cent (w/v) molasses growth substrate.

The Mahakipawa gold deposit is located 21 km northwest of Blenheim. It became the site of a small hardrock gold rush in 1889 following nearby alluvial gold discoveries in 1888. The study investigates the geology of the area of hard rock mining in the vicinity between Cullens and Waikakaho Creeks. The Marlborough Schist which hosts the gold depos, it consists of polydeformed greenschist facies quartzofeldspathic psammitic, pelitic and volcanigenic schist.

This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.

The Pegmont deposit is a stratiform Pb-Zn sulphide body occurring in a thin, iron-rich metasedimentary unit situated near the top of the Kuridala Formation, a part of the Mary Kathleen Group of the Middle Proterozoic"Eastern Geosyncline" succession of the Mount Isa-Cloncurry district. The deposit appears to have developed in a shallow basin or depression on a sea or lake floor.Detailed chemical and mineralogical study of seven diamond drill cores through the ore horizon shows that in addition to galena and sphalerite the orebody contains a large range of iron-rich silicates and aluminosilicates.Further, five drill cores selected to represent a section from basin centre to basin edge exhibit clear and systematic chemical and mineralogical changes in the ore horizon in both a vertical and, most importantly, ill a lateral sense.Reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the ore horizon as a whole shows this to be a silicate facies of a phosphatic, manganiferous iron formation or, more accurately, of "ironstone" in the sense of James (1966, U.S. Geol. Surv. Prof. Paper 440, chapter W).On the basis of both mineralogy and chemistry this silicate facies may be subdivided into three microfacies according to the dominant iron silicates characteristic of each: a fayalite microfacies, a hornblende-clinopyroxenemicrofacies, and a garnet microfacies. Significant Pb-Zn sulphide concentrations are confined almost entirely to the fayalite microfacies.

Feed slurries are typically flocculated in a thickenerÆs feedwell to increase the settling rate, underflow density and overflow clarity. High molecular weight polymeric flocculants are normally used, but present a number of challenges in terms of make up, dilution, delivery and mixing with the feed slurry.Various aspects of the flocculant dilution and delivery system have been studied with a combination of flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An open topped flocculant dilution/mixing box has been developed to replace a conventional flocculant manifold, with improvements to the mixing, fault diagnosis and ease of determining the flow split to the various dosing points. The addition points to the feedwell have also been studied, both in terms of where the flocculant is added, and how. While conventional multi-hole spargers are effective in dispersing flocculant, they are prone to blocking and have been replaced by open-ended pipes. The required dispersion is provided by an efficient mixing element placed in the dilution port. Adding the flocculant into the feedwell dilution stream prior to mixing with the slurry also provides super-dilution of the flocculant that can further improve the flocculation process and reduce flocculant consumption.CITATION:Heath, A R and Arbuthnot, I, 2013. Currently raw brown coal is fired in the Latrotx; 'ahcc th,iki~, Lanying with it two major penalties, (a) boiler efficiency of 65 - 70 per cent (in terms of GCV), (b) much higher boiler cost than for black coal. Drying the coal, in energy-efficient, and cost-efficient manner, opens the way to efficiencies of order 88 per cent and enables the lower cost black coal type boilers to be used. With the higher boiler efficiency goes much higher combustion temperatures and the effect of this on radiative heat transfer is a major factor in reducing boiler cost. In a fluidised-bed combustor the temperature is controlled to 800C - 900C. In a pulverised fuel combustor higher temperatures are however achieved and can increase boiler fouling due to the salt content of the coal. This is a problem which needs to be solved. Victoria has the prospect of lifting efficiency from 28/29 per cent to 35 per cent, of reducing carbon dioxide output correspondingly and reducing cost of power stations. So far as gasification is concerned, efficient removal of liquid water from the coal is important to the overall efficiency.

The Morley Coal Measures (Upper Cretaceous) at Ohai Coalfield were deposited in an intermontane basin alluvial environment of entirely terrestrial aspect. Within this regional setting, three distinct types of depositional environment are recognised; these are: (i) a sand-dominated (South Saskatchewan type) braided river system characterized by channel-bed dunes and possibly compound bars; (ii) a well-drained floodplain environment frequently subject to crevasse-splay and overbank-flow sedimentation; and (iii) a poorly-drained, commonly peat-accumulating backswamp environment locally traversed by tributary drainage systems and occasionally inundated by crevasse splays and overbank flows. All major coal seams of the Morley Coal Measures originated within forest moors under predominantly telmatic (periodically inundated) conditions. The peat-forming vegetation comprised largely arborescent forms (dominantly conifers), in addition to pteridophytes and bryophytes. In-seam vertical variations in coal type indicate groundwater levels initially decreased and then increased during the lifetime of a particular peat swamp, possibly in response to a change in the migration direction of an adjacent fluvial system. The proposed depositional model for the Morley Coal Measures has the potential to be utilised during exploration programmes and mine development to impart greater objectivity to predictions concerning seam geometry and continuity, trends in coal type and quality, and likely roof and floor conditions.
