"Today technical electro-refining processes for copper exclusively use sulfuric acid, for silver refining nitric acid electrolytes are used. Sulfuric acid is characterized by very good chemical and electrochemical stability, good conductivity and low cost. The disadvantages of sulfuric acid are the precipitation of fine-grained cathodes with smooth surfaces only by using additives like glue, thiourea and chloride. In case of silver the electrolyte is electrochemical unstable and bears the risk of the formation of toxic NOx when pH is too low. A second disadvantage is the form of electrodeposition of silver as dendrites with their removal from the bottom of the Möbius cells.This paper reports the results concerning the application of an alternative electrolyte in copper and silver electro-refining. At first the electrolyte was characterized by the determination of current density potential curves. Electrolysis experiments were performed in laboratory scale using technical anodes for copper and synthetic anodes for silver. During the copper tests the solubility of contaminations from the anodes and the amount and chemical composition of the anode slimes were determined. Moreover the influence of current density, electrolyte temperature and the effect of several additives on the precipitation and chemical purity of the cathodes were investigated. In all experiments cell voltage as well as anodic and cathodic polarization was measured and current efficiency and specific energy consumption were calculated. A comparison with the results with those of tests using conventional sulfuric acid electrolyte shows the advantages and disadvantages of both systems, additionally the technical application chances and limitations for the new electrolyte. This electrolyte enables the precipitation of smooth copper cathodes with low silver and sulfur concentrations even at lower temperatures without any additive. For silver refining the electrodeposition of compact silver sheets is possible, that can be stripped comparable to those in copper electro-refining."

"This contribution is concerned with adaptive processing decisions, where the process parameters are optimally adapted to the varying properties of the material input stream. Our starting point is the geometallurgical paradigm that the varying properties of the input stream are considered known e.g. from a geometallurgical model of the mined ore body, and optimal processing parameters are computed from them, by finding the parameter seaming optimal in a computer simulation.This approach however has to work with a lot of uncertainties: The prediction of the geometallurgical ore parameters can only be done with some geostatistical uncertainty. The parameters themselves are only proxies for true ore properties. Model prediction can differ relevantly from actual process results, due to model simplifications. Due to these uncertainties the computed processing choices can turn out to be inferior to simple non-adaptive processing. In this contribution we focus on the uncertainty of the ore properties and analyse this effect systematically, by modelling this uncertainty effect mathematically and in computer simulations. The most important findings are:(a) Processing choices not taking into account the uncertainty sometimes even perform worse than simple non-adaptive processing, for the sole reason of ignoring the uncertainty effect.(b) Ore properties, not adequately reflected in the ore description, might require different approaches, in which the observed processing behaviour feeds back into process control.(c) Bayesian decision theory allows computing optimal processing choices combining the information from the mine (geostatistical predictions) and from the process feedback. These choices give much more robust choices and do not suffer from the drawbacks described for the simple approach we started from.These new approaches can substantially improve the performance of adaptive processing in existing plants."

Diatomaceous or infusorial earth, also called diatomite; fossil meal, or kieselguhr, is derived from the lowest form of vegetable life, the unicellular alga:. It consists of the siliceous remains of extremely minute aquatic plants, which exist in both salt and fresh water. Light i~ a prerequisite to their development. These very small particles secrete silica in much the same way that molluscs secrete lime to form their shells. The diatoms at death sink to the bottom of the body of water in which they lived, and the organic matter gradually decays and is washed away, leaving the skeletons. Thousands of years are required by this means to develop bed5 of sufficient thickness to be of commercial value. The siliceous remains vary in size according to the species, but all are very minute and, as a general rule, they can be identified only under a high-power microscope. Over one thousand types have been distinguished and named. They are all composed of a hydrous or opalescent form of silica, with silica content ranging from seventy to ninety-five per cent. Magnified, they present an attractive sight, a very fragile structure with many interstitial openings known as cells. Many of them consist of two parts, defined as valves, held together by means of a girdle. Certain species, belonging to the Pinnularia family appear as a long comb, in half longitudinal section. The spaces between the teeth are the cells. This particular genus is very common in Nova Scotian deposits.

"Ores enriched in critical rare earth elements (CREE) keep on being of particular interest. The CREE are Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, including Y. In conjunction with beneficiation tests on Y-mineral bearing flotation tailings of complicated mineralogy, the Mineral Liberation Analyses (MLA) was used to work out processing characteristics fraction-wise in terms of modal mineralogy, mineral recovery, locking and liberation, and particle size.Size fractions from mechanical sieving (“real fractions”) as well as fractions created virtually by using filters on the MLA-data of the unsieved head material (“virtual fractions”) were investigated comparatively thereby. The ""virtual-sizing-approach"" features a much simpler sample preparation procedure and considerably lower cost if a fraction-wise investigation of a head sample is needed. It can be conveniently applied to intimately locked ores needing a fine grinding to a particle size distribution (PSD) range below 25 microns for instance. However, its practical use is sometimes disputed in terms of the reliability of the results. Results are shown for the main Y-bearing mineral xenotime and selected main gangue minerals of a low grade REE-ore.The influence of sample representativeness, sample preparation and particle counting statistics turned out to be of crucial importance. Given that all preconditions for reliable results are met, locking characteristics, modal mineralogy, and even PSD trends can be read from virtual fractions.The authors encourage processing engineers to use the virtual approach. They propose practical measures to improve the reliability of the MLA results, identify and tackle conflicting results, and mitigate evaluation problems that may arise."

The concepts of geostatistics are commonly difficult to understand for students, even for those with a strong mathematical background. A main problem is certainly the link between the variation of the parameter value in space or time, and the calculated experimental semivariogram as a function of the interdistance, but over the entire area. Another problem is to differentiate between directional and omnidirectional semivariograms and the way they have to be interpreted. Furthermore first time users of geostatistics often do not want to struggle through different books with the whole geostatistical background before using it. Too often this leads to using geostatistics as a black box with all the risks linked to it. That is the main reason that we developed some interactive tools based on the free public domain software R. We aim by developing three different modules to assist individual first time users, but also regular students and teachers to get a feeling of the importance of the various aspects in conducting a good geostatistical study. The modules show directly e.g. the impact of deleting, moving or adding data points, of changing parameters of the semivariogram model and of the geometrical parameters during kriging. The first module allows making the link between the variation of the parameter values in one direction and the calculated experimental semivariogram, and this for different given datasets. The second module covers two dimensional datasets and apart from calculating the semivariogram values, models can be fitted to the calculated data. A distinction can be made between omni-directional and directional semivariograms, including the effect of the tolerance on the angle and lag-distance. The third module focuses on ordinary kriging of point values in two dimensions. The aim of the interactive tools developed is limited to educational purposes only, i.e. to visualize some basic concepts for different pre-selected types of spatial variation. They do not intend to do a geostatistical study on a certain dataset (for this purpose there exists already a broad spectrum of good software packages). The original intention of developing the three modules was aimed at users with no or a limited amount of geostatistical experience. However, these modules seem also very useful to remain critical for experienced users. One should never forget that in a real application one does not have a complete view of the phenomenon studied. We compiled a manual to facilitate the use of the modules and to guide the user we formulated several questions to be solved for each module.

"The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc. developed a guide of minimum standards for reporting exploration results, mineral resources, and mineral reserves for the purpose of informing the general public. The SME Guide has been adopted by the Society.History1. In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), Inc., the President of SME formed Working Party #79, Ore Reserve Definition, with the mission to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration results, resources, and reserves. A Subcommittee was appointed by the Working Party to draft these guidelines and submit recommendations to SME. The Subcommittee's recommendations were published by SME in the April 1991 issue of ""Mining Engineering"", and as a document entitled ""A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, Resources, and Reserves"" (the SME Guide) in January 1992. Work continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996, when Working Party #79 was renamed the SME Resources and Reserves Committee and became a standing committee.In 1994, the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions (CMMI) started a concerted international effort to create a set of international definitions for reporting mineral resources and mineral reserves. An ad-hoc International Definitions Group was formed, with representatives from mining and metallurgical institutions from the United States (SME), Australia (AusIMM), Canada (CIM), the United Kingdom (IMM) and South Africa (SAIMM). A major breakthrough came on October 18, 1997 when the CMMI International Definitions Group met in Denver, Colorado and reached a provisional agreement (the Denver Accord) on definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Concurrently, and since 1992, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) was developing an international framework classification for mineral resources and mineral reserves. Starting in October 1998, joint meetings were held in Geneva between the CMMI International Definitions Group and the UN-ECE Task Force, resulting in agreement to incorporate the CMMI definitions into the UN framework classification."

On the average, however, the new graduates are, without any doubt, the best trained ever, or at least they have been the most expensive to train in the universities.There appear to be exciting opportunities for competent, well-trained and educated scientists and engineers far beyond the numbers that can be annually produced, and the demands for excellence in depth as well as in breadth of training probably will continue to increase for many years to come. This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. Sulphur is derived from both 'voluntary' and 'involuntary' production. The former category includes sulphur obtained from elemental sulphur deposits and from pyrite and gypsumanhydrite deposits. Sulphur in the latter category is produced by pollution abatement at fossil Juel plants and from treatment of metallic sulphides. Canada is the world's largest sulphur exporter and third largest producer. Main resources of Canadian sulphur are sulphurous fossil fuels, metallic sulphides and native sulphur. Only the first two sources have produced sulphur in Canada 10 date; the first source accounts for over 85% of total Canadian production. Future sulphur sources will be derived increasingly through pollution abatement and decreasingly through voluntary production.

Orano Mining maintains a significant level of Innovation and Development Research for its sites in Canada, Niger, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and France. This effort is formalized within the six major thematic programs below, which include more than one hundred affiliated R&D projects:  Geological understanding, tools and methods for exploration  ISR technology (geology, modeling, mining development tools)  Mining technology (SABRE)  Ore treatment and processing (in particular via our Centre for Innovation for extractive metallurgy, CIME)  Environment (radiochemistry, modeling, tools and methods for remediation)  Digital Mine (sensors, transmission, database, and data modeling) This paper describes the main actions of these six programs, their stakes, and their progress. There is no single path leading to innovation but fostering an innovative context and a structured project approach are essential ingredients to successful development and industrial deployment. As a result, Orano Mining has, over the years, developed a disciplined methodology for R&D portfolio and project management. This methodology, presented here, targets a reduction in time to implementation while valuing both the expertise and the work in project mode.

"THE Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation, through its subsidiaries, the Old Sydney Collieries and the Dominion Coal Company Limited, produces 4% million tons of coal annually from eight submarine collieries situated on the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island. The present workings have a frontage of 20 miles and extend 31/2 miles under the Atlantic ocean on gradients varying from 4 deg. to 24 deg. To date, some of the workings have reached .a depth of cover up to 2,800 feet.The pitching seams, the annual seaward advance, the resulting depth of cover and the rdatively soft roof and floor have necessitated the adoption of extensive longwall mining, with room-and-pillar mining con-fined to areas above the 1,000 foot cover line, where 60 per cent of the -coal is left standing in pillars to support the ocean floor. Longwall mining accounts for 87 per cent of the total production with the remaining outputs obtained from room-and-pillar work and the narrow work development. Seventy-four per cent of the longwall production and 41 per -cent of the room and development production is completely mechanized.Although 2 tons of water is pumped from the collieries for each ton of coal mined, the working sections are relatively dry as the heavy make of water is essentially surface drain-age from the land crop areas. The dry workings and the long haulage distances, which in many cases exceed 4 miles, have resulted in a continuing programme to combat the dust hazard, both at the working face and along the mine roadways."

Orano Mining Somaïr uranium treatment plant (Niger) uses a pugging-curing process to leach uranium. Sulfuric acid, nitrates and water are added to the finely grinded ore in a rotary drum to leach uranium bearing minerals and solubilize uranyl sulfate ions. Reagents, sulfuric acid and nitrates, are the main OpEx of this process step. The economical optimization of their addition requires a thorough knowledge of the ore behavior in solution with these reagents. Orano Mining technical direction and Somaïr laboratories developed a model to predict the curing process uranium recovery surface with a limited number of parameters. Experimental laboratory work to fit the model needs to be done for each type of ore which can require a lot of metallurgical tests and would be time consuming. In order to optimize the required number of tests, an innovative experience plan was designed in parallel to the development of this model reducing the required number of tests to only eight. Once the parameters of the models are correctly fit, the comparison between the estimated values and the actual values for the uranium recovery is excellent (less than 0.5% error in average). Associated with an updated cost model of the curing process, this new recovery model helps the plant operator find the best set of reagents to maximize curing process profitability in the Somaïr plant day after day.

In view of the many changes which have taken place since 1950 in the rules of the Income Tax Act concerning the deduction of exploration and development expenses, many corporate taxpayers each year face the tedious task of determining which particular rules their unclaimed exploration and development expenses are subject to and in what sequence these expenses are to be claimed. Recent amendments to the Act have cleared up some of the mystery of the "ordering" of these deductions. This article examines the sequence in which various categories of exploration and development expenses are to be deducted in accordance with the terms of the Act as amended by Bill C-11.

"The Michipicoten-Goudreau area, bordering on the northeast corner of lake Suferior, has had a tectonic history related to that of the geosyncline occupied by this lake. This basin has been a major structural feature in the Canadian Shield since at least late-Precambrian time. It has been extensively faulted and was the centre of great igneous activity in the Keweenawan feriod . Many of the faults, folds, dykes, and sills in the surrounding regions tend to head directly or indirectly into this basin. Some of the faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area appear to run under the eastern part of lake Superior just as the large Keweenaw fault in Michigan extends into the lake on the south side. Some of these faults may even be extensions of or counterparts of the faults on the south side of the lake. Another set of faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area runs nearly transverse to some of these major faults, and it is evident that in some places movement has recurred at a later time on faults formed in an early period.STRATIGRAPHYThe rocks of this area, with the exception of Pleistocene and Recent formations, are all Precambrian:"

The change from a seasonal to a continuous mining operation at Cassiar has been accompanied by increased emphasis on the preventive maintenance of mining equipment. This paper describes how equipment maintenance is organized, and details some maintenance practices that have proved advantageous to the Cassier operation. Introduction Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is currenly carrying out an open-pit mining operation at the 6,300-foot elevation on McDame mountain in northern B. C. A 6-mile road connects the mine to the mill and plantsite at the 3,500-foot elevation. Ore concentrate is delivered to the mill via a 3llz-mile tramline. Naturally level ground does not exist in the mine area. The weather is typical of mountainous regions, exhibiting wide and rapid variations in temperature. It is generally wet and windy at the mine elevation, and a heavy snowfall is common. The rock types vary from a soft, sheared serpentine to massive serpentine, to medium-hard, friable sediments to hard, blocky volcanic flows.

The Slocan mining camp in Kootenay district; British Columbia; has long been noted for the great number of its silver-bearing deposits; and for the success that has; in many instances; attended their development. The orebearing area lies east of Slocan lake and mainly within a radius of 6 to 8 miles of the mining town of Sandon. Within this limited area 135 or more properties have shipped ore in quantities of from 100 tons or less to more than 500; 000 tons; and with a total value in silver; lead; and zinc ranging from a few hundred dollars to well over $10; 000; 000. Of the three metals; silver has easily ranked first in value; with lead second and zinc third. Zinc production; however; made slow progress in the early years; and with . the exception of the Lucky Jim mine; and a few others where high-grade ore could be readily hand-sorted; was a detriment to the silver-lead ores until improved methods of separation enabled it to take an important place in the mineral production of the Slocan.

"RMR geomechanics classification is being used all over the World as a useful tool for tunnel predesign and construction. Bieniawski (1989) provided guidelines for tunnel excavation and support, according RMR numerical values; guidelines which are now included in almost all tunnelling books, regulations, and Internet portals. But in the last 25 years tunnelling techniques have changed and some of the guidelines have become obsolete.. The conditions of tunnels for the 1989 guidelines application were: horseshoe shape; 10 m width; vertical stress < 25MPa; construction by drilling and blasting. Actually a substantial number of tunnels are mechanically excavated. The tunnel themselves are now bigger: a span of 14 m. is very common for transportation tunnels. The guidelines included the following concepts: excavation method, rock bolts (20 mm diameter, fully grouted), shotcrete, steel sets. There is an increasing gap between the 1989 guidelines and the practice: in many tunnels different to-the-case excavation and support requirements are established. Bieniawski himself has published a paper (Lowson & Bieniawski, 2013) with different guidelines based in Lowson’s practice, with no explanations and/or justification.In this paper a new set of RMR tunnelling guidelines is proposed taking account of the actual industry conditions, and increased safety regulations. The 5 classes’ limit RMR:values (80,60,40,20) are no more useful actually: Values of RMR (70, 50, 30) are used in practice to define quite different tunnelling techniques. Consequently a 10 subclasses system is proposed. Each subclass covers a span of 10 RMR points. As the number of mechanically excavated tunnels has increased a new correction factor is necessary, according the excavation method.The proposed 2014 RMR guidelines are for tunnels 10 to 14 meters wide, the world practice for new roads/railways tunnels. Many tunnels for water/ services are smaller with smaller support needs. Wider than 16 m caverns are out of the RMR system.It is not possible, nor desirable, to propose only a value for support in each subclass. The new guidelines propose an interval of values for certain types of support. More pessimistic values must be chosen for wider tunnels, tunnels with lower RMR values in each class and cases when a higher safety factor is asked for. More optimist ones are chosen for narrower tunnels, and higher RMR values. Some alternatives are almost complementary, others are contradictory. Sometimes several different techniques are proposed Guidelines are not automatic options. Good engineering judgment must be used when choosing between the different alternatives. Guidelines are not mandatory suggestions."

With the advent of flotation, practically all milling research was turned to this development as it held the answer to large-scale economic operations. However, there are many concentration problems that can be more adequately and economically handled by the dry methods that have been developed, and, consequently, I believe it is very advisable for mining men to become fully 'conversant with just what can be done in the dry state. Therefore, today, I should like to give a brief summary of the processes that are available and, in a general way, how they can be a p-p lied. ?It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.? Charles Darwin. Canada?s mining and exploration companies have evolved over the past century from essentially a pick-and-shovel industry to a high-tech industrial sector. This evolution has occurred in fits and starts, and has been driven by the shifting environment of economic, technical and social opportunities and pressures in Canada. As labour costs have gone up, and labour availability has gone down, the industry has evolved more efficient processes. As mineral prices have increased or fallen, the industry has evolved either by expanding or shrinking production, or by changing processes to adapt to the newly prevailing conditions. As stringent environmental protection legislation has been implemented, the industry has adapted accordingly, and has substantially changed its mindset to incorporate sustainability into its way of doing business. These changes have occurred over a number of decades, and have usually occurred as the industry?s reluctant response to pressures it couldn?t evade. This model mirrors the classical paradigm of natural selection where evolution is driven by pressures external to the organism (or organization) ? change occurs to the degree necessary for survival and prosperity, but generally no further. In recent years a new paradigm has started to come into play in Canadian mining and exploration. Rather than only a reactive response to the external economic, social and technical factors, groups within the mining community are becoming proactive in developing strategies for future adaptive change. Instead of each against the other, they are developing more sophisticated paradigms where they can both compete against (such as in marketing) and cooperate with (such as for tech development) their fellow organizations. Most importantly, they are seeing individual and national advantage in a collaborative Canadian approach to address the advantages of overseas competitors who often have lower labour costs, lesser environmental standards, or more accessible markets and transportation. This has translated into large-scale mining community support for the Canada Mining Innovation Council, and its programs in exploration, mining, processing, HR development, energy and environmental stewardship. This new paradigm is adaptive to the current environment but is substantially different from the older way of doing business in two major ways ? it is based on a collaborative approach to competitive advantage, and it is highly proactive rather than reactive. All the programs have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. This approach is being actively adopted by much of the Canadian mining community, and argues well for the adaptability and long-term survival of mining in Canada.

"AbstractOver the past five years, tax rates in the Canadian mining industry have skyrocketed upward across Canada, as both federal and provincial governments have sought to increase their share of mining revenues.However, the past few years have not only brought high tax rates to the industry, but also a number of important new federal and provincial tax incentives.In large part, these incentives ~ special credits or reduction in tax for carrying out specific exploration, processing or other activities - have helped to moderate the adverse effects of the higher tax rates and have provided inducements for exploration and processing activities which might not otherwise have been undertaken.However, the effectiveness of certain of these incentives can be questioned: our over-all tax structure now consists in large part of punitively high marginal rates with some extraordinarily generous but capricious tax reductions for specific activities and may not be in the best long-term interest of either the industry or the nation.A rational tax structure, with moderate and stable tax rates, together with reasonable incentives confined to activities specifically requiring them, could be a more effective spur to investment than the present tax and incentive jungleIntroductionIN THE YEARS since federal tax reform, the mining industry in Canada has faced a continued escalation in its tax burdens as federal and provincial governments have leapfrogged each other in imposing new and higher taxes on the industry. The result has been that marginal tax rates imposed on mining and processing activities throughout Canada have jumped to hitherto unparalleled levels."
