"Mechanical and physical properties of the impact welded dissimilar metal joints are controlled by joint interface morphology. An intermediate layer (IML) is often formed at the joint interface and this deteriorates the interface quality in some metal combinations. Numerical and experimental studies were performed in order to examine the formation mechanism of the wavy interface and intermediate layer for explosive welded Al/Cu dissimilar metal joints. The impact welding process consists of (1) high-speed oblique collision of metal plates, (2) metal jet emission and large deformation and temperature increase at collision point and (3) rapid cooling at the joint interface. Euler-Lagrange coupling method, smooth particle hydrodynamic (SPH) method and modified laplacianFoam (LF) method were linked together to simulate a series of processes from (1) to (3), and the final interface morphology including the formation of IML was reproduced. The wavy morphology (wave-height, wavelength) and the position and composition of IML formed at the joint interface of Al/Cu joints were quantitatively in good agreement with those reproduced by numerical analysis. Our simulation results are useful for the control of the interface morphology, reduction of the amount of IML, and improvement of the mechanical properties of the impact welded dissimilar metal joints.INTRODUCTIONImpact welding is a kind of solid state joining method providing extremely high joint strength for both similar-and dissimilar metal combinations. Explosive welding and magnetic pulse welding are representative methods to achieve the impact welding. By a high-speed oblique collision between two metal plates, a metal jet is emitted from the collision point. The metal jet can remove any oxide films and contaminations on the plates and produce an active refreshed surface. Consequently, good metallurgical bonding can be achieved even for dissimilar metals (Crossland, 1982). Solid metals deform like fluids under the high pressure condition at the collision point and characteristic wavy interface is formed. In addition to the wavy interface, an intermediate layer (IML) is often formed at the joint interface in some metal combinations. Elimination or reduction of the amount of IML at the joint interface is desired since the excessive IML formation along the joint interface causes a large reduction in physical and mechanical properties. Formation of IML is considered to result from characteristic thermal history at the joint interface including partial melting due to the local temperature increase and successive rapid cooling behavior at the joint interface. In order to control the IML formation at the joint interface, it is necessary to reveal both heating and cooling processes at the joint interface. However, it is impossible to observe the phenomenon occurring at the joint interface and also difficult to investigate the temperature change at the joint interface directly during the impact welding. Therefore, simulation or numerical analysis is indispensable to overcome this problem. In the present study, the explosive welded Al/Cu joint, which is prone to form IML at the joint interface, was selected for the research. By using a newly developed numerical analysis method, not only the formation process of wavy interface, but also the local temperature increase and successive temperature decrease at the joint interface were reproduced. The formation process of IML was investigated by using both numerical analytic and experimental results."

"It is well known that chalcopyrite can be dissociated into simple sulphides by heating with elemental sulphur at about 475°C:CuFeS2 + S -> CuS + FeS2Experimental work was undertaken to determine whether this ""activation"" could be used to advantage in the selective leaching of copper from chalcopyrite concentrate.A method of treating copper concentrate with molten sulphur was developed and the activated product was leached in dilute sulphuric acid using oxygen, ferric iron or manganese dioxide as the oxidant. The object was to obtain a solution suitable for electrowinning with minimal purification, but it was impossible to obtain rapid extraction of copper without simultaneously dissolving a large proportion of iron. This was attributed to the fact that some of the copper was present as a low iron-copper sulphide (idaite) and that the pyrite formed during the ""activation"" step was more easily oxidized than natural pyrite."

MR. M. W. Boom: I would like to congratulate Mr. Russell on his fine paper. One very good point which has always appealed to me is the smooth working of a steam hoist as compared with electrical. He does not mention the steam hoist at Springhill which has been working there for a good many years. MR. S. R. NEWTON: I have read with a great deal of interest the paper presented by Mr. Russell on the development of haulage engines in the mines of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. He is to be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive article showing, step by step, the various improvements that have been made over the years in the design of such engines. I am quite in accord with Mr. Russell's statement that the positive tooth clutch can have too many teeth, and also that the method of driving a sliding clutch hub of any design should be by means of a hexagon or octagon on the shaft. Where the clutch hub does not of necessity slide on the shaft it can be pressed on and keyed to the shaft in the normal manner. With regard to the 'Cramp' internal-expanding jaw-type clutch, while it is true there are more moving parts than with the clutch consisting of a ring with internal cut teeth and a driver having a fewer number of teeth as .described by Mr. Russell; there are compensating advantages to the internal expanding jaw-type of clutch. The V shaped profile of the teeth permits of engagement of the clutch with very much less 'jockeying' of the drum. This is particularly the case in vertical-lift mine hoists, where it may be necessary to engage and disengage the clutching mechanism at frequent intervals.

The surface deformations induced by reservoir dilations can be measured using tiltmeters and these measurements can be used to infer reservoir level volume changes by solving an inverse problem. Preferred approach to solve such an inverse problem is to consider more tiltmeter measurements than the number of unknown variables considered in the inverse problem. However, sufficient number of measurement points is not always available due to economical and practical issues. This paper proposes a new approach to circumvent this problem. The new approach entails generation of pseudo surface deformation data by curve fitting tiltmeter measurements using a mathematical function, which delineates three-dimensional characteristics of surface deformation profiles. Then a three-dimensional inverse problem is solved using pseudo surface deformation data. This method is useful in inferring reservoir volume changes with high areal resolution when the number of available measurements is not sufficient to acquire the desired areal resolution.

"Bentonite clay has been the most common binder for iron ore pellets. Although bentonite increases pellet strength and durability, it has several disadvantages. For example, its use increases the cost of pellets and decreases pellet purity due to its composition and the higher levels of flux required to meet basicity limits. Several new types of binders have been proposed to replace clay. The binders include starch, modified humic acid (MHA), and dispersants. These binders were used to pelletize a magnetite concentrate from the United States. Typical doses of each binder type were 0.05-0.1 % starch, 0.5-0.75 % MHA, and 0.05 % dispersant. At these doses, the pellets exceeded the minimum recommended values for wet drop, dry compression strength, and fired compression strength. Pellets made with the MHA and dispersants had the lowest abrasion rates of the new binders, and were comparable to pellets made with bentonite clay. In this paper, we compare the new binders, considering pellet quality and the advantages and disadvantages of each binder type.INTRODUCTIONIron ore pelletizers need binders in order to make good quality iron ore pellets. The typical binder is bentonite clay, an alumino-silicate material. Bentonite increases the ballability and strength of iron ore concentrates, but reduces pellet iron grade and reducibility. As high quality bentonites can be expensive to ship, low quality bentonites are often used at significantly higher doses – this reduces iron grade and reducibility even further. Thus, several new types of binders have been proposed to replace bentonite clay.In this paper, we present several new binders for iron ore pellets: starch and modified humic acid (MHA). These have been tested alone and in mixtures with dispersants, or else with bentonite clay. Starch, MHA and their mixtures are briefly described below."

Many factors affect mechanical properties of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys. As examples the presence of impurities such as Mn and Fe due to the formation of intermetallic phases, additions of small amounts of alkaline earth metals and cooling rate in consideration of Si formation, they all have an impact on mechanical properties of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys. In this investigation, the effect of Fe content into the specification range of A357 alloy, the addition of different modifiers consisting of Na, Sr and Ca for the alloy of A356 and different mounting techniques for separately cast test coupons of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys using the lost wax method were studied. The results showed that using material with lower Fe content and addition of modifiers improve mechanical properties. Also different mounting techniques resulted in different mechanical properties.

For many years the value of qualitative microscopic investigation has been recognized in both of the fields of pure and applied science. In particular, its aid has been invoked in the determination of rock specimens in thin section, and some at least of the interrelations of minerals present in any one section have been observed and, to a limited extent, applied for the solution of different problems. During the past decade this form of research has also been diverted to the determination of ore minerals in polished section, with some observation of their structural relations. Microscopic research of a quantitative character, on the other hand, while started nearly one hundred years ago, has found but a limited application in petrography and has scarcely been used at all in the more modern science of mineragraphy. This is very largely due to the methods employed, since most of them consumed too much time and were, in addition, too laborious to encourage many workers in their use. The details of procedure for these earlier methods will be found in another paper by the writer, and will be omitted from this discussion as being of small interest to practical mining men.

The two largest contributors to silicosis in machine men are dust from drilling and dust from blasting. With the advent of the shatter-cut method of blasting, the evils of blasting dust were greatly reduced. The problem of dust from drilling has been attacked from two different angles: (1) The adoption of dustless frontheads or enlarged water tubes, both of which have proved capable of reducing dust concentrations; and (2) The adoption of better ventilation. Many operators are loath to adopt dustless frontheads or enlarged water tubes on Leyner drills because of the increased repair costs on drills, and also because it has been found difficult to enforce 'the proper usage of dustless machines: for example, workmen sometimes plug the vents in the fronthead.

"IntroductionIn the mineral processing industry, certain minerals such as uranium, thorium and vanadium, etc., are selectively extracted with high degree of purity from solutions containing variety of other impurities by solvent extraction process. This separation process consists of bringing two immiscible or partially soluble liquid phases in contact, where mass transfer of one or more components takes place by ion exchange under certain controlling parameters such as pH, salt concentration and temperature. The processes taking place are primarily physical because the solutes being transferred are ordinarily recovered without chemical change. For efficient extraction more than one stage is required and the solutions are recycled counter currently through other stages. A multi-stage counter current solvent extraction plants essentially consist of four circuits namely: extraction, water wash, stripping, and solvent scrubbing. In extraction circuit the desired mineral is extracted at a certain pH from an aqueous solution onto an organic solvent by bringing them in contact with mixing in large mixer-settler units. The mixed solutions are allowed to settle and separate into component organic and aqueous phases in horizontal settlers by providing sufficient residence time. The solutions are then moved counter currently to other units- the aqueous from the underflow and the solvent organics from the overflow of the settler. The solution streams coming out of extraction circuit are loaded organics and barren aqueous or raffinate solution. The loaded organics are washed with water in a water wash circuit to remove transported impurities from extraction circuit. In the stripping circuit, the desired mineral is stripped selectively from the solvent phase back into an aqueous phase with a stripping agent at a selected pH. The solution stream leaving, stripping circuit are stripped organics and pregnant strip (aqueous) solution. The stripped organics are scrubbed off other loaded impurities with a conditioning solution in, scrubbing circuit and the cleaned solvent is re-used in the extraction circuit.A typical solvent extraction plant for uranium extraction and purification at Agnew Lake Mine is described in this chapter."

"Uranium, thorium and yttrium have been recovered, since the 1950s, from pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates occurring in the basal sediments of the Quirke syncline at Elliot Lake. Gold, an element of interest in similar type deposits occurring worldwide, is a very minor constituent of the Elliot Lake conglomerates because the provenance area of the sediments had few gold-bearing rocks.Uranium, thorium and rare elements are found in resistate and diagenetic minerals occurring in the matrix of the conglomerates. The valuable elements are recovered from the acid soluble minerals during the milling process.Large uranium reserves occur in mines found on both limbs of the Quirke syncline. Major reserves are being developed on the South Limb of the syncline, where the Stanleigh Mine, among four past-producers, has been reactivated.IntroductionUranium and thorium commonly occur in anomalous amounts in coarse basal sediments. Radioactivity in basal conglomeratic sediments is generally attributable to resistate minerals, that rarely occur in concentrations high enough to be of economic significance. One type of basal conglomerate found worldwide, in Precambrian cratonic basins, has uranium or uranium and gold concentrations large enough to be of economic interest. Principal among the occurrences are the pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates of the Huronian in Canada, of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and at Jacobina in Brazil.The uranium and gold mineralization of these conglomerates was derived from provenance areas where both elements occurred and were later concentrated through source degradation and deposition in placers in a reducing environment. Only the Huronian conglomerates, generally much richer in uranium but with negligible gold, have been exploited solely for their uranium content.The uraniferous conglomerates of the Huronian at Elliot Lake, 500 km north of Toronto, continue to represent a major world source and supply of uranium concentrate."

"With declining feed grade and increased production targets, it became necessary to upgrade Key Lake's eight stage counter current decantation (CCD) circuit. Following laboratory trials, mill operations recognized that dilution of the feed slurry and buffering of the feed density variations would improve thickener throughput. Plant testing resulted in the installation of Outokumpu's Supaflo ""Floe-Miser"" system. The circuit's flowsheet, instrumentation and control strategy were also upgraded along with the thickener feedwell modifications. The paper will also discuss these modifications and the implementation of the current control strategy.IntroductionCameco Corporation's Key Lake operation is the largest single uranium producer in the world. Current production is fourteen million pounds of uranium oxide (U 308) per year. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining with Cameco as the operator.The mine is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca basin. "Aluminum has the disadvantage of low strength. In order to obtain the high strength composites, crystals were refined in the composites. Grain refinement was approached at two process points, generating new grains and grain growth. It is important for refinement how to control the grain growth. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique and TiB2powder addition prevent grain growth. To investigate effects of strain and additives to the alloy, aluminum powder was sintered at 70 MPa and 80 MPa, changing the content of TiB2additive powder by SPS method. As the results, the crystal grain size was finer in the composite sintered at higher sintering pressure and with larger amount of additive, though over 1.0mass% TiB2addition dissuades grain refining. These grain refinements improve hardness and tensile strength of sintered aluminum alloys.INTRODUCTIONAluminum matrix composites have low density, high specific strength, and low cost. Their applications are growing continuously in the field of automotive and aerospace industries. Recent studies to improve their good mechanical and tribological properties use different ceramic materials such as Al2O3(Das, Munroe, & Bandyopadhyay, 1996; Ashwatha & Anthony Xaviorb, 2014),SiC(Hassani, Bagherpour, & Qods, 2014), B4C(Ehsan, Masoud, Touradj, Amir Hossein, & Ali, 2015),TiC(Ehsan, Ali, Masoud, Kamyar, & Touradj, 2017), and TiB2(Fei & Zhong-Hua, 2013).On the other hand, grain refinement is also an important techniques for improving the properties of aluminum alloys. Finer grains improve the mechanical properties of the alloy. For cast and wrought alloys, addition of grain refiners in molten alloys accelerates generation of nucleus and suppresses grain growth. Al-Ti-B alloy is generally added as grain refiners in the molten aluminum alloys(Easton & Stjohn, 2001). Especially, TiB2has very high melting point, low density, and excellent hardness. Therefore, TiB2was selected as additions into aluminum alloys. Liquids reaction leads to high cost, oxidation, discoloration of molten alloy, and clustering of additive powder as compared with solid reaction such as sintering. However, sintering of aluminum alloy powder with ceramic powders is difficult for oxide layer surface. Recently, we take attention to spark plasma sintering (SPS) as advanced sintering process. SPS process can easily sinter a high quality specimen at a lower sintering temperature and in a shorter time than conventional sintering processes. By SPS process, we have sintered titanium powders that are as difficult to be sintered by any other processes as aluminum powders, and improved mechanical properties by adding hard ceramic powders TiC and TiB(Kamegawa, Izui, Komiya, Kobayashi, & Arimoto, 2015; Sampei, Izui, Komiya, Shigimura, & Suzuki, 2015). Furthermore, it is important to consider not only pure aluminum but alloys for solid-solution or precipitation strengthening. Actually, pure Al does not have enough strength compared with the alloys. Al-Cu alloy and Al-Mg alloy demonstrate adequate strength for industrial and commercial sectors. Al-Mg alloy retains good formability, and has high resistance to corrosion. It is therefore used for many applications. We must consider alloying processes. The most cost effective process is blended elemental technology where alloying elements are added to base powder as elemental or master alloy powder (Smugeresky & Dawson, 1981; Yasue, Radjai, Miwa, & Sakaguchi, 2003; Bolzoni, Esteban, Ruiz-Navas, & Gordo, 2012)."

The hydrogen embrittlement and stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of an a -titanium alloy and its two kinds of welding samples have been investigated. The results show that this alloy has very low susceptibility to SCC, and the values of Kiscc for the alloy are 46.4 MPa ? m' 65.86 MPa ? mu2 in the direction of T-L and L-T, respectively. The scanning electron fractographs show transgranular and quasi-cleavage fracture. The hydrogen embrittlement results show that the notch sample of the alloy is not sensitive to hydrogen, but the electro-beam welding and diving-arc welding samples are sensitive.

Introduction The importance of the preservative treatment of mine timbers need scarcely be stressed here. Increasing the life of mine timbers will reduce one of the major costs of mining and also conserve the available timber supply which lies within easy access of the mines. When treated, several species of timber may be used which otherwise could not be considered, owing to their short life. Another feature which should appeal to the mining industry is that wood preservatives are a mine product, and the benefit to be derived from the increased consumption of wood preservatives due to the example set by mine owners is not inconsiderable. Mine timbers may be divided into three classes when considering preservative treatments. (1) Timber obviously not profitable to treat owing to long natural life or short period of time in service. (2) Timber that obviously should receive protection from decay. (3) Timber installed in locations where the length of service required will depend on future developments, so that preservative treatments might or might not prove to be a profitable investment.

"The structural relations of the ore deposits of the Staclacona mine are of considerable interest, for they not only illustrate the effect of a change in competence of the wall-rock, but also the effect of either the convergence together of two faults, or a change in the clip of a fault, or both of these factors, on ore deposition.The mine is in claim M.L. 1818 near the eastern end of Pelletier lake and lies about 2 miles south of the town of Rouyn. The Company was organized in 1926 to explore claims in Rouyn, Dufresnoy, and Beauchastel townships, but attention was directed mainly to those in Rouyn. Underground work began in 1928 with the sinking of the main shaft to a depth of 300 feet. Except for 1930 and 1931, the mine has been in operation continuously since that time. Production, which began in 1936, up to the end of 1946 has amounted to 1,381,422 tons of ore from which gold and silver having a total value of $7,861,860 were recovered. The average grade of the ore milled in 1946 was $6.68.GEOLOGYThe rocks in which the Stadacona ore deposits occur are mainly volcanics of the (Keewatin) Abitibi series intruded here and there by numerous dykes, sills, or masses of diorite. Single dykes of olivine diabase and lamprophyre are also present in the property and are intersected in the mine workings. The volcanic rocks are part of a wide belt of northward dipping lavas and pyroclastic rocks, having a thickness of over 16,000 feet, that extend from the east-west trending belt of Timiskaming sediments on the south northward to the Horne Creek fault and form the south limb of a large syncline. The volcanic rocks within the property consist of numerous, east-west trending, northward dipping flows of andesite and a few flows of rhyolite interbedded with rhyolite ruff and agglomerate. The angle of dip throughout most of the property is 60° to 80°N., but in the main cross-cut on the 850- and 975-foot levels stratification in rhyolite tuff was noted dipping 35°N. The tuff at this point lies above an intrusive mass of diorite and it is probable that the change in dip results from the way in which the tuff and agglomerate have been thrust aside by the intrusive."

Gibraltar Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine in central British Columbia. The stability and potential failure modes of pit walls in the Granite Pit are controlled by the orientations of joints and faults. The structural geology also has an impact on as-mined bench geometries. Geotechnical mapping and surveying were conducted using stereo photographs and photogrammetry software. Detailed digital terrain models were constructed to determine the pit wall geometry and the locations and orientations of larger structural features. The pit wall geometry is compared to conventional survey results and the mapped structures are compared to results from a nearby geotechnical borehole.

The Canadian government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002 and, prior to ratification, committed to equitable distribution of the burden of implementation. The Federal government's Large Final Emitters group is working with industry to develop covenants that will consider the unique nature of the company's operations and not unreasonably burden any one sector or company. Ensuring equitable distribution must consider local, national and international issues. From a Canadian iron ore producers perspective, the fact that most of the iron ore production in the world is in countries that have no Kyoto commitment is a critical issue. Another issue unique to this sector is the increased addition of fluxing agents in iron ore pellet production which has shifted some process related greenhouse gas emissions from steel producers to iron ore producers. While the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol are primarily environmental, the economic implications for Canadian industry are not trivial. For decades Canadian companies have been actively improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to maintain a global competitive position. Production of iron ore pellets is an energy intensive process and the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) is the largest Canadian producer. In 2002 IOCC identified energy and Kyoto Protocol implementation as critical risk factors for their organization and appointed a full time Energy Manager. In January 2003, IOCC initiated a comprehensive process for identifying energy cost reduction opportunities and established an Energy Master plan. This process included:

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company SKEGA first introduced the rubber magnetic liner, and then followed by the Chinese metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary and regrind ball mills, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design globally. Due to the larger ball mills and thus larger grinding balls (up to 80 mm) especially in non-ferrous metal industry, the application of magnetic liners has been very limited. Based on the new development of materials, the HMR Group Limited has been exploring new designs of magnetic liners which led to the invention of the Nano Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5m x 6.5m ball mill with 80 mm balls at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. Although the first set of liner had a service life of 12 months, the design of the second set was modified and improved to accommodate the operating conditions, which is expected to reach least 24 months service life. The original manganese steel liner only had about 8 months liner life.1. IntroductionMineral processing is an essential operation for the development and utilization of mineral resources. The effective concentration of various useful minerals depends on sufficient liberation of the mineral particles in the ore. The crushing and grinding process such as ball milling are the most common way to achieve proper liberation size. Mill liner is an eternal topic for the operations, not only because it protects the equipment, but also affects the mill grinding efficiency and availability. In recent years, magnetic mill liners have been developed that can easily meet the production targets with numerous benefits, such as zero maintenance, reducing specific energy consumption and improving grinding efficiency."

Since the time when Canada's East and West were joined by the railway, and communication was established into the interior, settlements grew on the southern fringe of the great Precambrian area that formed the northern protaxis of the continent during its vicissitudes of growth. They clung precariously to the fringe of that ancient land, for the Precambrian is not generous to those who wish to live by the fruits of the soil, except in those limited areas where the Pleistocene ice-sheet has been profuse in its gifts of clay to cover the hard surface of the Precambrian rock. Later settlements spread westwards over the expanse of Cretacean plains that now form the wheatfields of the Canadian West; but there still remained in northern and western Ontario, in eastern and northern Manitoba, a pioneer race, to whom agriculture had attractions only in so far that it provided the wherewithal to lay siege to the riches of the Precambrian. And they had a vision beyond their time. More than they knew, they had seized the fact that for the complete rounding out of Canadian national life, a8 well as for the establishing of the necessary contributions towards the economic stability of Canada and its provinces, an industry in mining sh01.dd be well and truly built in the hinterland of the central provinces. Failing the winning of mineral from the rocks, and timber from the forests, there would remain between the East and the West an enormous barrier of unproductive country which would not only be an incubus to the agricultural people in their struggle for economic liberty, but would effectively, and for all time, remain an un-populated void across which the aspirations of East and West would be unable to unite.
