We developed concentrated remote control blasting system to blasting simultaneously at a large number of sites in a mine of large scale. This system is consisted of three parts, the first part is a control station with high voltage power source units, the second part is a relay terminal with relaying and branching units, and the third part is a blasting machine with charging and discharging units. The control station is connected with the blasting machine by mean of control bus wire. The blasting machine adopts MBS(electromagnetic induction blasting system) for the reason of safety and good handling.

An increase in construction and quarry operations has necessitated blasting activities in areas once considered rural and in the close proximity of transmission pipelines. A method to determine the maximum allowable bending stress by the formulas outlined by the Battelle Memorial Institute report of October, 1962, and the assumed stress comparison with actual measured data is presented. A direct relationship between pipe stress and ground particle velocity is shown, and a method to predict stress by relating stress to charge weight and distance from the shot point is discussed.

In the center of Helsinki - capital of Finland - extensive blasting operations were carried out during the years 1982 - 84. At the corner of the streets Mannerheimintie and Simonkatu - in the Forum block - about 125,000 cu.m. of rock were blasted to give place for a new modern shopping centre (Fig. 1). Added to this amount of rock another 10,000 cu.m. were blasted for a transport tunnel to an adjacent underground bombshelter (Fig.2) which is to be used as a parking place in peace-time. The blasting work was demanding and difficult to carry out due to old buildings surrounding the work-site as well as computers and other sensitive equipment installed in some of them.

In a previous paper, it was shown that a lack of clear understanding of the role of initiation mode on detonation characteristics often leads to under-utilization of the explosive system in blasting. This is of particular significance since the very large number of explosive initiation practices currently in use implicitly assumes that the blasting performance of an explosive is largely independent of the exact mode of initiation. This paper deals specifically with bulk-loaded and pneumatically-loaded ANFO under various initiation modes in small diameters. These include initiation by booster and detonating cords of various strengths, and combination of cords and boosters. The nature of energy release and energy partitioning between shock and gas energy have been studied in the underwater test as a function of charge diameter. The paper describes the relative merits of various initiation modes for specific charge geometries and confinement, under end- and side-initiated conditions. Guidelines have also been formulated for use in the field to match initiation practice with blasting requirements.

Late in 1982 a fire began in the shallow, abandoned workings of the Uitkyk Colliery near Witbank, South Africa. Urgent measures had to be taken to quench the fire, before the surface caving it caused could put an important railroad connection out of action. This paper outlines the way in which the job was tackled.

Two quantities, Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and Scaled Distance (SD), have controlled aspects of many blasting projects and operations for a long time. Vibration criteria typically use both PPV and SD because they are simple to measure, and simple to calculate. Their use in regulations worldwide is fairly ubiquitous, in efforts to limit damage to structures in the neighborhood of a blasting operation. PPV and SD are also used to determine likely blast damage effects in mining operations.

This paper describes a method of measuring continuous detonation rates using standard electronic parts, coaxial cable, and a data recorder such as an oscilloscope. Three six-volt lantern batteries or a DC supply power the electronics that cost less than $100. Included are means of showing low battery power, finding the proper voltage scale on the recorder, and test triggering of the recorder. Modifications of the circuit allow for use in the field to measure charges up to 57 meters and for use in the laboratory to measure short charges. The high resistance (8.709 Ohms/meter) coaxial cable is a mass produced, special order cable available commercially. The driver circuit delivers a constant current to the cable, and as the detonation shorts the cable, a change in circuit voltage occurs. Recording this voltage change over time allows determination of detonation rate resolute to the sampling speed of the recorder. An oscilloscope or personal computer with a data acquisition card can easily record the data for analysis. Detonation rates recorded in the laboratory using the coaxial cable and the Bureau of Mines's traditional probes are presented. The system accurately measured the detonation rates of ANFO confined in steel pipe, detonating cord, and unconfined high explosive.

There is an intuitive tendency to equate rock strength with rock stability, yet the two must be evaluated separately. A slope in strong hard rock is not necessarily stable, nor is a slope in weathered weak rock necessarily unstable. In some cases the reverse is true, depending on the geometry of joints and weak planes. The time element is a matter of special concern, that is how suddenly the failure begins and how rapidly it progresses. Sudden failures can be catastrophic, whereas creep usually is not. In soils and weathered rock, the process is usually incremental and is more likely to give some warning of impending failure. With careful observation, the failure process in these materials can be detected and monitored instrumentally or visually. In some cases, the slope may be stabilized, reinforced or modified. When that is not possible, there is usually enough time on this type of slope to remove men and equipment from the area before complete failure occurs.

In the latest years, the use of innovative blasting techniques has become more frequent in mines all over the world. Such techniques allow the miner to be more aggressive in the distribution of explosive energy into the rock mass, e.g., stretching blasting patterns to improve fragmentation. Considering the different rock mass conditions and more energetic blasting designs, misfired shot events have occurred. After cause investigation, initiators have shown evidences of deformation by impact and/or loaded boreholes have resulted in emulsion desensitization, both presumably affected by dynamic pressure.

The authors describe in this paper a systematic approach toward reducing coal production costs up to 35% through the use of explosives energy for overburden removal. In this system, explosives are employed to blast as much as 65% of the overburden instantly from highwall to spoil pile, with only the lesser portion requiring removal by dragline, shovel, or loader.

Pumpable emulsion explosives have been available to surface and underground massive mining operations for decades and through their unique properties offer significant advantages through improved safety, reliability and performance. Despite their advantageous properties, the benefits of pumpable emulsions have been unavailable to narrow reef mining operations due to the void in technology necessary for their successful implementation within the challenging environment. Despite efforts to promote and enhance the safety and performance of bulk emulsions for narrow reef stoping, little research has been undertaken to advance the pump technologies required for their implementation. This has resulted in a gap in knowledge and technology and as a consequence the successful implementation of a pumpable emulsion system has consistently eluded the narrow reef environment.

The aim of this study was to understand clearly how VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives is influenced by parameters such as nitrate salt composition in the oxidizing phase, product density, blend composition, gassing rate, type of sensitization, etc. Also some VOD testing was performed on watergel-based gassed explosives in order to compare the results with those obtained for emulsions. VOD measurements were conducted in the surface blasting facility at the Research and Development laboratory of ENAEX SA (Calama, Chile). Despite the fact that the influences of some parameters on VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives are easily predicted, there was found to be an unexpected correlation. Although it is commonly believed that the VOD of gassed explosives depends on the density, this study found that the VOD depends on the both size and the amount of gas bubbles incorporated into the product as well as type of sensitisation, regardless of whether the explosive was straight emulsion or a blend. Density is just a consequence of the incorporation of voids into the explosive. Future work in this area may examine variation of other parameters, in order to obtain a greater knowledge of detonation properties and therefore to design more efficient explosives.

A series of small scale explosive tests were performed at a perlite mine near Socorro, New Mexico. The tests were designed to investigate the azimuthal or directional relationship between small scale geologic structures such as joints and the propagation of explosively-induced ground motions. Three shots were initiated within a single borehole located at ground zero at depths varying from 83 m (272 ft) to 10 m (32 ft). An array of three component velocity and acceleration transducers were placed in two concentric rings at distances of 20 m (66 ft) and 40 m (131 ft) surrounding the single hole at 7.5° , 15° , and 30° azimuths as measured from ground zero. Data from the transducers were then used to determine the average propagation velocity and waveform characteristics of the blast vibration through the rock mass at the various azimuths. The rock mass was mapped to determine the predominate joint orientations (strike and dip) and the average propagation velocities were correlated with this geologic information. The results showed that there is a correlation between the predominate joint orientation and ground motion amplitudes and velocity. The more predominate geologic structures allow the wave to follow along their strike thereby forming a planar path of least resistance and in turn, allowing higher velocities and amplitudes. Secondary joints or structures may act in concert with more prominent features to form a network of channels or paths along which the wave moves more freely than it may when traveling against the structures. The greatest azimuthal variations in velocity and amplitude was observed for the shallow shot at 10 m (32 ft) depth.

Anaheim Bay, located at Seal Beach, California, is the site of the Huntington Harbor development of waterfront homes and marine facilities. The main entrance to Anaheim Bay is a relatively narrow channel connecting the bay with the Pacific Ocean which runs under California State Highway One. During the development of Huntington Harbor the old highway bridge was replaced with a new, higher bridge to allow for boat passage through the channel. At that time only the main span decking of the old bridge was removed, leaving the support pillars and the approach ramps in place (see Figure 1). The narrowness of this channel, plus the increasing boat traffic created a situation in which public demand for the removal of the old bridge became significant. Because the bridge was located within the boundaries of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station (see Figure 2) the Navy became involved in the bridge removal. Eventually the task was assigned to the Naval Amphibious Construction Battalion One and work began in early 1974.

As we begin the pre-blast survey we need to decide on the number of holes needed for production and a detailed highwall inspection. The survey consists of checking the highwall and placement of barrier cones. At the Elmhurst Chicago Stone Company, Barbers Corner Plant, we use 18-24" orange highway type safety cones. These cones are easily noticed because of their high visibility color in all weather conditions and are placed approximately 20-25 feet from the face and approximately 50 feet apart along the highwall, then the area is checked for back break, under cut, over hang, surface filled area and clay area. This deposit is unique because of the number of clay filled areas and slip seams that meanders through the deposit plus a fault that runs North-Northwest and South-Southeast. This particular limestone deposit is overlaid with glacial sand and gravel and the top weathered stone wanders plus or minus 10 feet in 1400 feet.

In this paper, the authors describe major changes in drilling and blasting methods instituted at the Zortman And Landusky Mining Company Properties to maintain the viability of these north central Montana surface mines in the present period of depressed precious metal prices. The authors explain how improved drilling procedures minimized problems due to uneven benches and floors. They also describe changes in explosives loading and delay blasting techniques which improved fragmentation, thus increasing metal recovery from heap leaching. Quantities were increased substantially and a new bulk explosives loading system was placed in service with a special down-the-hole bulk loading truck and storage facilities for bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion. At the same time, drill patterns were expanded by nearly 40%. The authors also describe a new technique of using explosives to selectively cast waste and ore in different directions so as to reduce the cost of separating the ore.

In the spring of 2005, the Lake Superior Chapter of the ISEE invited me to speak about raw materials used for blasting, anhydrous ammonia and the effect of this important feedstock on the cost of ammonium nitrate.The invitation was extended because our company is involved in trading ammonia and the production of ammonium nitrate. In a response to a request to update that presentation, it struck me how events such as hurricanes Katrina and Rita can change the landscape of our businesses.

When blasting is eliminated as a cause of cosmetic cracking, often someone will ask, “If blasting didn’t cause the crack, then what did?” This paper describes detection by remotely operated instrumentation of the new cosmetic crack that was climatologically-induced. The measurement was obtained as a part of the development of Autonomous Crack Measurement (ACM) instruments to measure micro-inch response of cracks to both long-term, climatological, and dynamic, blast vibration effects. The crack occurred in the wall of a structure that was monitored for over 29 months and as such represents one of the longest periods of ACM observation.
