The Anderson prospect is one of a number of properties investigated by the Bureau of Mines during the course of preliminary studies of the lead-zinc districts of northern Stevens County, Washington. examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. This examination was supplemented in late 1944 and the spring of 1945 by pre- The property was first liminary angle-dozer trenching and core-drilling. A second examination of the property was made by the junior author in November 1945. The data obtained in the course of these studies is presented in the following report.

Many contributions to methods of forecasting the performance of waterfloods of a five-spot pattern have been made by investigators. In most of these forecasting methods, a previously selected sweep efficiency is used, and other simplifying assumptions are employed to obtain the objective. In this paper the calculated oil recoveries from several five-spot single- and multiple-layer stratified reservoirs were made with a minimum of assumptions, and because of the techniques used, no previously selected sweep efficiency was required. As a result, the accuracy of the forecast is increased. Permeability curves and continuously changing saturation gradients are used in every section of the pattern. By means of a potentiometric model, the flood pattern is divided into channels, the centers of which are the streamlines. The channels are divided into cells. As flood water enters, the permeability and saturation of each cell change with time. In this study the production from multiple-sand layers of different absolute permeability but with the same relative permeability-saturation relations are combined. The results are shown for a single- and 10-layer reservoir with a permeability variation of 0.60. The oil rate, water-oil ratio, and recovery are shown as functions of time for a 2- and 20-centipoise oil starting in primary phase and after fill-up.

Samples of mine atmospheres collected by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections and investigations of coal mines, in accordance with provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U. S. C., sees. 451-483) are analyzed routinely by chemical methods at Bureau of Mines laboratories. When samples collected in open workings of nongassy coal mines at points not less than 12 inches from the roof, face, or rib contain 0.25 percent or more methane, the act requires the operator, during operation of such mine, to comply with the provisions of sec. 209, Title II, of the act, which pertain to gassy mines. The methane con-tents of such samples are determined by a physical method based on infrared absorption spectrometry to provide an independent check on analytical results obtained by chemical methods. This information circular describes the equipment and procedures used by the Bureau for determining low concentrations of methane in coal mine atmospheres by infrared absorption spectrometry. Treat contaminated coal mine drainage to meet EPA and State water quality requirements. Approach A model (fig. 1) is presented for selecting, designing, and sizing one or several passive mine drainage treatment systems that can be used in remediation of abandoned mine lands (AML). The three principal types of passive mine drainage technologies for the treatment of coal mine drainage are an aerobic system, a compost wetland, and an anoxic limestone drain. The multistep approach presented here provides a simplified method to characterize the type and magnitude of the water quality problem and then to select either a single treatment system or a combination of treatment systems to address the specific site situation. How It Works Step 1. Discharge Characterization. Characterization of the discharge consists of measuring the discharge flow rate and collecting water samples at the point of discharge for chemical analysis. Both the flow rate and chemistry of a discharge can vary seasonally and in response to storm events. It is important to account for this variability by determining flow rates and water chemistry under various conditions.

The Bureau of Mines has completed a survey of petroleum pipe - lines by direct correspondence with the oil companies and the use of the records of the Interstate Commerce Commission in order to cover both interstate and intrastate systems . The review shows that crude petroleum and product pipe -lines in the United States had a total length of 152,814 miles on January 1 , 1950 , an increase of 25,463 miles since May 1 , 1941 , the time of the last previous survey . The expansion in pipe -line systems was due largely to new trunk-line construction , as the mileage built to carry refined products increased by 11,880 miles , and those intended for crude -oil transportation gained 6,193 miles . Trunk lines represented 60 percent of all pipe -line mileage on January 1 , 1950 , compared with 58 percent in 1941 . The average diameter of trunk -lines for crude oil , as calculated on the various sizes and weighted according to their respective lengths , increased to 9.8 inches on January 1 , 1950 , compared with 8.4 inches on May 1 , 1941. The mileage for lines up to 8 inches used in crude trunklines has decreased since the 1941 survey , while those of larger sizes have increased . The extensive use of large- diameter oil pipe -lines has developed since the construction of two major lines from Texas to the East Coast at government expense as a World War II emergency measure . The successful operation of these lines proved their economic advantages over smallerdiameter lines as well as their effectiveness in moving unprecedented volumes of oil during the period when tanker movements were restricted by submarine action in the Atlantic Ocean . The 24-inch diameter " Big Inch " line carries over 300,000 barrels daily of crude oil , and the 20 -inch " Little Big Inch " carried over 230,000 barrels daily of gasoline and light fuel oils to destinations where they were urgently needed . Hence , Although these lines were sold and converted to natural -gas service in December 1946 , after fulfilling their wartime mission , their record proved to the industry that significantly lower operating and investment costs per barrel -mile of oil moved could be achieved than were possible with the comparatively small lines in general use up to that time . the several major oil pipe -line projects that have been constructed since the late war are of large diameter pipe . To assure supplies and market outlets of sufficient magnitude to support such lines and provide adequate flexibility , ownership is often shared by several large companies whose transport needs are served in common . The principal recent expansion in facilities has been from supply points in Southwestern States toward markets in the North and East and to Gulf tidewater .

Electrical conductivities and densities of molten fluoride systems were measured as functions of the melt temperature and composition. For any given mixture, the two properties change linearly with temperature. Three alkali metal fluorides were selected as solvents for melts of the type LiF-, NaF-, and KF-MFx, where M is a metal selected from the alkali metal or alkaline earth groups, or from the lanthanide or actinide series of elements, and x = 1-4. Heats of activation for conductance were calculated from the experimental data and varied from 2.3 to 9.2 kcal/mole at 1,000° C. Some relation between position in the phase diagram and the conductivity changes was suggested.

A PRELIMINARY PROGRAM, dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Incorporated (DEI) on research and development laboratory, field and other engineering studies for the disposal of retorted oil-shale materials. This PRELIMINARY PROGRAM included a discussion on the peculiarities of the retorted shale materials to be investigated and a discussion of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The PRELIMINARY PROGRAM was divided into eight work phases as follows: I -- Program Development II -- Exploratory laboratory tests on old USBM retorted shale III -- Laboratory tests on pilot plant retorted shale. IV -- Laboratory tests on retorted shale from the semi-works plant and field test plots and ponds. V -- Field compaction tests. VI -- Infiltration pond tests VII -- Bureau of Mines special tests.

This report describes the development, theory, and application of techniques and instruments for quantitatively determining nickel, vanadium, and iron in oils, using direct, X-ray emission spectrographic methods (5, 6).3 The methods developed apply to petroleum and other oils as well as some specific fractions of oils. The quantities of nickel, vanadium, and iron in various petroleums are of practical and theoretical interest. Even traces of nickel and vanadium may poison cracking catalysts, and X-ray methods have been used for determining nickel in such catalysts (7). At least parts of the nickel and vanadium occur as metal-porphyrin complexes, a fact which may have considerable bearing on knowledge of the origin of petroleum.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a method of standardizing forecasts of mineral consumption that attempts to resolve the problems caused by the use of different data bases, different definitions of minerals consumption, and different base years for making projections. Using this method, forecasts of U.S. and world mineral consumption, in the year 2000, for nine commodities (aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, tin, tungsten, and zinc) are standardized and compared. Also selected forecasts or associated growth rates are used to generate implied values of consumption for 1980-83, which are then compared to actual values of consumption for 1980-83. The economic growth predictions underlying the forecasts are examined, and some general conclusions are drawn. A description of each methodology used to generate these forecasts is given in an appendix.

In 1947 the Bureau of Mines, as an accident-prevention measure, decided to advocate the adoption of roof bolting (suspension roof supports) in coal mines where it appeared to be applicable. Subsequent experience has disclosed that the applicability of this support is more general than was first suspected; moreover, comparison of the accident records of mines before and after adoption of the roof-bolting method shows results that more than justify the effort and funds expended. The industry has responded enthusiastically, because roof bolting proved to be not only an accident-prevention measure but also one to increase productive efficiency. In some instances this increase in the productivity of men and machines has been almost incredible and has led many mining men to conclude that through some hocus-pocus they can now cast aside many or all of the time-proven rule of good mining practice. If this tendency is not counteracted, it could easily result in an increase of roof-fall accidents, which may outweigh the benefits of roof bolting and discredit an innovation in roof control that shows great promise of materially reducing our mining accidents. From an economic standpoint it may represent the margin between profit and loss in many mining operations. The purpose of this manuscript is not to propose an inflexible code or set of rules but to summarize the experience to date as a guide for those who have the responsibility for the installation and inspection of roof bolts. This experience consists of approximately 250 investigations of roof failure in which roof bolting was involved either directly or indirectly. It should be pointed out that many of these failures were controlled, occurring during experimental periods, and comparatively few of the accidental failures actually resulted in personal injury, yet a significant number represented potential hazards.

"A virtual impactor personal aerosol sampler (VIPAS) bas been developed for use in diesel-equipped mines to collect size-separated samples or diesel exhaust and mine dust particles in the respirable size range. This sampler consists or three stages: a 10-mm cyclone, a 0.8- µm cutpoint virtual impactor and two filter cassettes. The large non-respirable particles are removed in a 10-mm cyclone. The respirable particles from the cyclone pass through a 0.8- µm cutpoint virtual impactor with the particles larger than and smaller than 0.8 JI.ID (mine dust and diesel exhaust particles, respectively) collected on two 37-mm filter cassettes. The sampling How rate is 2 L/min so as to be compatible with the standard respirable dust sampler and personal sampling pumps. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry has been increasing its use of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines, especially in coal mines. With this increased usage has come an increased concern regarding the health effects associated with inhaling diesel exhaust particles since they are in the respirable particulate size range. A Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) advisory committee directed MSHA to develop a sampling protocol for diesel exhaust particles to assess worker exposure (MSHA, 1988). In addition, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that ""whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen as defined in the Cancer Policy of Occupational Safety and Health Administration"" (NIOSH, 1988).Past work, with cascade impactors in both the laboratory and in underground coal mine studies, has shown that the diesel exhaust particles are primarily in the less than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter size range whereas the coal dust particles are primarily greater than 0.8 µm (Marple et al., 1986; Cantrell, 1987; Rubow and Marple, 1988; Rubow et al., 1990a, b; Cantrell and Rubow, 1991). This work has been jointly performed by the University of Minnesota and Bureau of Mines researchers over the last 8 years. Typical particle size distributions for a diesel-equipped coal mine and an all electric coal mine are shown in Figure l. Note that the particles in the < 0.8-µ.m mode are the diesel exhaust particles (seen only in diesel-powered mines) and the particles in the > 0.8-µ.m mode are coal particles (seen in both the electric-powered and diesel-powered coal mines). Chemical mass balance analysis was also performed on these two size fractions to determine the degree of particle cross-contamination in the two modes. This analysis showed less than 10% cross-contamination, i.e., in coal mines Jess than 10% of the diesel exhaust particulate was collected in the coarse fraction and Jess than 10% of the mine dust was collected in the fine fraction (Cantrell, 1987; Rubow et al., 1990a)."

[The Anniversary-Bucky pegmatite is one of the largest, dikes in the Quartz Creek district, 21 miles east of Gunnison, Colo. The major dike consists of quartz-albite pear pagmatite and graphic granite with many quartz masses as individual cores occurring within the dike. A mining operation on one of the largest core areas has exposed several mineralogic cones directly associate with the core. These zones, including the large- units of the dike, are quartz pegmatitc, quartz-perthite pegmatite, perthite pegmatite, muscovite-feldspar -quartz pegmatite, quartz-albite pegmatite, and perthite-quartz (graphic granite) pegmatite. Muscovite and beryl are found in the muscovite-feldspar-quartz zone and are the only two products that have been marketed. Other potential products are perthite, graphic granite, and possibly small quantities of columbite-tantalite, monazite, and related radioactive minerals. The Bureau of Mines drilled two diamond-drill holes during April 1950 to investigate the largest and cost promising core area. This, report describes the results of this drilling.]

The Mary Arnold Mining Co. in 194.3 owned 292 acre s of mineral land in Christian County, Mo., and was one of two companies with milling facilities in southern-central Missouri. Production from this property between 19.37 and 1941 amounted to 1,718 tons of zinc in the form of zinc concentrate. Because of the urgent war requirements for additional zinc and the existing facilities for treatment of zinc-lead ores at these mines, in the winter of 1943-44, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposits by churn drilling in an endeavor to outline enough ore to maintain production of zinc from this district. Five holes aggregating 1,043 feet were bored.

Mining companies are usually held responsible for accidents occurring to the public around their operations . Safeguards are provided by progressive mining companies to prevent the public from getting into danger from wandering unattended about the properties . At abandoned operations , where little or no supervision can be maintained , persons are often injured through the negligence of the operator in leaving the property in unsafe condition . After a mine is abandoned or a lease is given up by a mining company , the responsibility for the safety of the property rests sometimes with the State to which the property ownership reverts or with the owner of the land ; either is usually quite unwilling to spend any money to remedy unsafe conditions due to the carelessness of the mining company . The land owner or the State , or both , should see that the work of leaving safe conditions behind is done by the operator before he abandons the mine or gives up the lease . Some of the worst hazards to the public at abandoned mines are from old test pits , abandoned shafts or tunnels , open pits , caved ground , and bodies of water in abandoned open pits . Hazards exist from some of these sources during the active operation of a mining property as well . In the early stages of mining operations test shafts are often sunk from 50 to 100 feet deep through the more or less loose material overlying bed rock . When these shafts are left unprotected , they are a serious danger for many years to come . In the course of time they become largely concealed by brush and grass , and thus are a deadfall to anyone who might happen to step into them . This condition will hold true for any part of the country, but to a much less degree where it is not necessary to sink through a great amount of cover . Many progressive operating companies have adopted the practice of filling in test pits after securing the information desired . Some nonresident landowners and exploration companies , however , have left such pits open , and it is extremely difficult for the mine inspector to get into communication with the owner . This review of literature is centered around ore evaluation and reserve calculations as generally used in the mining industry. Methods of data interpolation were reviewed with the object of determining a method that would best suit the evaluation of under- ground coal deposits. Further, computerized data library concepts as related to geological data were investigated together with a brief evaluation of the data requirements for the total project. Additionally, computer techniques for the processing of geological data with a view to generate management information for decision making were reviewed including hardware and software availability. 2.1 Interpolation and Extrapolation of Data The importance of accurate estimates of value parameters in terms of their geographical and geological distribution within a, mineralized body has long been recognized in the evaluation of metallic and non-metallic deposits. As the factors which affect mineral distributions and associations are better understood, accuracy, and reliability of estimation increases. The ideal objective is to develop a deterministic model with the capability of accurately predicting the value at any geographical location. The most important value parameters requiring determination in any orebody are the grade and the quantity of ore that can be mined at the stated grade. These two parameters are modified or qualified by others which include physical dimensions and physical and chemical characteristics of the ore value. Therefore, the

A statistical comparison of the dust exposures of coal miners with identical occupations in Pittsburgh, Pocahontas, Freeport, and Kittanning seams was conducted. Results indicated that, in some cases, identical occupations have different dust exposures in different seams. For example, the continuous miner operator in the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas seams is exposed to more dust than the same man in the Kittanning seam, but the Kittanning seam has more dust along the haulage roads than the other seams. Also, average dust exposures for similar occupations in continuous and conventional mining operations are similar.

The Bureau of Mines studied the problems caused by airborne contaminants from welding exhaust in surface mining operations and investigated equipment designed to reduce existing hazards. Four commercially available welding-fume exhaust units were tested to determine their effectiveness. Results indicated that the four units had the capability of controlling airborne particulate concentrations and bringing them to within allowable exposure limits.

The feasibility of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) offgas heat recuperation by preheating scrap was investigated on a pilot plant scale by the Bureau of Mines. In this study, offgases generated during the oxygen blowing of a molten pig iron and scrap charge were passed through a static bed of shredded auto scrap. Scrap quantities varying from 100 to 180 pounds and representing from 22 to 40 percent of the 450-pound BOF metallic charge were preheated in this manner. Average scrap bed temperatures of 1,650° F for 100 pounds of scrap and 1,150° F for 180 pounds of scrap have been achieved during the blows. As compared to cold scrap used in the normal BOF practice, it was found that by preheating scrap, usage could be increased by 43 percent. The thermal energy recovered by this preheating method can account for up to 44 percent of the energy necessary to melt the scrap.

This report, which covers the period from January 16 to October 21, 1974, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of contract no. H0242028 and modifications 1 and 2 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to further reline and modify three of the canopies (shuttle car, loader, and roof drill) which were developed under contract no. H0220031, and to conduct further testing and demonstration of the relined designs. Modifications I and 2 involved conducting further in-mine evaluations of the face. drill and cutter canopies, also developed under contract no. H0220031. In addition to the canopy modifications, the contract involved an evaluation of an operator&apos;s seat concept for a shuttle car which was developed for the USBM by another contractor.
