This paper is based on data obtained in the course of the oil - shale investigations of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , conducted in cooperation with the State of Utah . The amount and quality of oil that can be produced from any shale may be made to vary to an important degree by changing the temperature relations existing in the shale charge during destructive distillation . The rate at which the oil is formed from the shale is affected by the rate of heat supply , and therefore by the temperature of the shale during its thermal de composition . The quality of the oil formed may be controlled by altering the temperature of the shale , and therefore , the rate of formation of the oil . Variations in the yield and quality of shale oils may be caused by inherent properties of the retort used , but in any event the properties of the crude oil and yield are very largely the result of the extent to which the thermal de composition has progressed . Recognition of these principles will aid in explaining to a large degree the reasons for the wide variations in oils produced from the same shales by different " processes " . These principles also may be applied in the operation of different types of retorts in order that crude oils of a type most profitable to the operator may be produced . The Bureau of Mines has conducted an extended series of tests in the dee structive distillation of oil shales , in order to determine the wide variations that may be effected in the quality and yield of shale oil by changing the rate and temperature at which the oil is formed . These tests furnished interesting information on the four related points : yield of oil , quality of oil , temperatures required to distill shales , and time required for distillation .

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSTests conducted at Mount Weather indicate that clear water is the best bit coolant and cuttings-removal medium for diamond drilling. All of the mediums tested did show that drilling speed increased when drilling with the faster feed ratios (greatest pressure on the bits). In no case, how¬ever, did the increased drilling speed amount to over 16 percent, and even in a long hole the slight increase in drilling speed would be more than offset by the extra time consumed in setting up.Bit wear was excessive when lubricating agents were used, the most footage per bit was obtained when drilling with clear water in the normal manner, and the next best footage was obtained when drilling with circulated water containing no lubricating agent. The diamonds showed little or no wear in any of the bits, and all bits cut well throughout the tests. They were only taken out of service when erosion of the cast metal had progressed to the point where the diamonds were about to roll out. The lubricating agents evidently hold some of the cuttings in suspension, which in turn help to cut the rock but also wear the metal of the bit.No hard-matrix bits were tested, and it is possible that one or more of the lubricating agents might increase the efficiency of such a bit by keeping it sharp and doing away with the necessity of sharpening by sand blasting. Some tests are planned with hard-matrix-type bits and the same lubricating agents used in the tests under discussion, but it is realized that any drilling advantage gained by the bits sharpening themselves may but at least partly offset by excessive wear of the Pump parts."

All State mining laws require that flame safety lamps be used in gassy mines; the laws of some States require that safety lamps be kept for emergencies at every coal mine, whether gassy or nongassy. The use of the flame safety lamp has been widespread because it is the only defice readily available for detecting both the presence of methane and deficiency of oxygen. This paper reports the results of an investigation by the Electrical Section, in cooperation with the Gas Section, of the Pittsburgh Experiment Sta¬tion relative to the behavior of permissible flame safety lamps in mine atmospheres deficient in oxygen and the effects of methane5 on the detection of Oxygen deficiency.

"The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."

In an effort to better predict the useful service life of friction rock stabilizer mine roof bolts in coal mine environments, the Bureau of Mines has evaluated the corrosion resistance of stabilizer steels in air-saturated and deaerated waters from seven Eastern and Midwestern underground coal mines. Accelerated electrochemical corrosion tests were used to estimate corrosion rates for the two high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steels used to fabricate Split Set stabilizers and for galvanized steel. Long-term static-immersion weight-loss tests were also conducted with the HSLA steels. Corrosion rates developed from the weight-loss tests (steady-state air dissolution) were roughly comparable to rates determined from electro-chemical testing in aerated waters. Although the highest rates occurred in waters with the highest chloride contents, rates in the other waters were low (<2.0 mpy) and exhibited little correlation to the widely varied chloride contents of the waters. The generally low corrosion rates are attributed in part to the tendency to deposit a protective CaC03 film, reflecting susceptibility to carbonate precipitation as indicated by positive Langelier (saturation) index values for the waters. With one exception, corrosion rates for the galvanized steel were (2.0 mpy. Rates with aerated waters were higher than those with deaerated waters. Pitting tendencies of the steels were also estimated.

This paper, describing the operations of the Louisville Cement Co. in quarrying limestone for the manufacture of quicklime, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on stone quarries throughout the United States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The trend toward encouragement of worker participation in accident prevention in the coal mines of the United States is not new; however, it has been given added impetus in recent years and is now definitely progressing. It has been found by experience that, although there are many approaches to a mine-safety program that will include the workers themselves as well as their supervisors, no one way is suitable under all circumstances. It requires the concerted efforts of many agencies working along parallel lines toward a common goal. The following seven principal agencies, using somewhat different methods, are listed to illustrate how this problem is approached throughout the coal-mining industry 1. Federal Bureau of Mines. 2. State mining departments (in individual States where coal is produced). 3. Programs conducted by individual mine operators. 4. Programs conducted by mine workers&apos; organizations (unions). 5. Institutes, societies, and other educational organizations. 6. Coal operators&apos; associations (regional and national). 7. Universities, college, and high schools. Each of the seven approaches to safety are discussed briefly, and their methods end contributions, such as publications and other activities, are listed.

The monoclinic to tetragonal inversion of zirconium dioxide was studied by single-crystal X-ray methods, high-temperature X-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis. The unusual features of the inversion, such as no definite transition Lperature, hysteresis, and athermal kinetics, were confirmed for powders who mean crystallite size was greater than 1,000 A. Samples of mean crystallite size below 1,000 A displayed classical kinetics, obeying a logarithmic rate law. A detailed mechanism based on Ubbelohde&apos;s theory of continuous phase transformations was proposed which is consistent with all the experimental facts.

"As stated earlier the primary goal of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. While initial work was directed to coal dust the charge to the dust center has been expanded to include diesel particulates and asbestosis, the latter of deep concern not just to workers in the mineral sector of the economy but also to the general populace.A major facet of Dust Center research has been the analysis and documentation of comprehensive research protocol and procedures that are appropriate state-of-the-art in the various areas of respirable dust. In addition to definition of standardized research protocols and procedures which would be utilized by center personnel for uniformity and reproducability there is a considerable need for utilizing standardized respirable dusts in experiments with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. This respirable dust needs to be available in large quantities for a wide variety of research uses that include animal and medical experiments. The dust must be free of the lubricating oils and grinding wheel contaminants that are frequently encountered in laboratory generated dusts.The holistic approach to establishing standardized protocols and procedures applicable to the five major research areas of the center is presented in Figure 5.In one hypothesis, range in coal volatility is considered to be a major causal factor in the incidence and severity of pneumoconiosis. Therefore a suite of characterized standard respirable dust samples have been prepared for researchers from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz, limestone (rockdust) and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared.A suite of medical investigations have been developed utilizing small and medium size animals as well as non-human primates in a variety of dust/lung interaction projects which will be discussed in the next section. A number of respirable dust sampling and dust generation methods have been investigated and selected techniques utilized for both in-mine and in-laboratory research investigations. These will also be discussed in more detail later. A wide range of respirable dust size, chemical and mineralogical analyses have been investigated, standardized and documented for use in various research investigations.This interaction and documentation of various respirable dust sample procedures, animal and medical tests, sampling and dust generation methods, plus size, chemical and minerological analysis applied in the five major areas of research investigation have served to create a very favorable synergism and rapid technology transfer in the respirable dust center."

[Laboratory research and, control in the production an. utilization of petroleum and it 3 products have expanded greatly during the past decade, and much of the routine control and experimental equipment now rewires the constant daily use of liquid mercury. In spite of this ;;renter use, very little consideration has been given to the hazard that might be occasioned by the toxic vapors of mercury unavoidably spilled&apos; of otherwise exposed to the atmosphere during the normal procedure of laboratory open at ions. A simple visual examination ).&apos;.&apos; son-,, r° the laboratories reveal the presence of a considerable quantity of mercury in the cracks of floors, on work tables, and on ark, around equipment stands. Usually this mercury is contaminated with oil3/ and dirt so that it remaining in a finely divided state and a ;mall amount pre presents a relatively large surface for evaporation. Since :mercury shows measurable volatility at a temperature v,.^ lo.! 5o F., mercury vapor will be present in, the mercury _3 exposed promiscuously.]

Ventilation is undoubtedly the greatest single safety factor in the operation of a coal mine. Any condition or occurrence that interrupts the ventilating current or changes its normal course through the mine workings is a distinct hazard and should be considered as such by every coal-mine owner, operator, and worker. The hazard, of course, is much greater in a mine that is emitting gas, as an explosive mixture can accumulate in a very short period if the ventilating current is interrupted. It is common to find one or more entries producing 600 cubic feet or more of methane per hour. If the ventilating current were short-circuited from these entries for 15 minutes, there would be an accumulation of 150 cubic feet of methane, which, when mixed with enough air to dilute it to the lowest explosive point, would make about 3,000 cubic feet of explosive mixture; this gas could be ignited in almost any normally operated mine by a cutting machine or other electrical equipment. The ignition of this quantity of an explosive gas-air mixture can readily cause an explosion of coal dust that would completely wreck the underground workings and possibly some of the surface structures. In fact, the ignition of one-tenth of the above quantity of an explosive mixture of gas and air might readily start an explosion that would, extend through every part of a large mine. The possibility of occurrence of interruptions to the ventilating current has received comparatively little consideration from mine owners, operators, and workers in many parts of the United States. Such a possibility should be considered in connection with every mine that gives off explosive gas, and steps should be taken to prevent it.

An aluminizing dross which is accumulating as a waste material in substantial quantities was tested for possible use as a steel deoxidizer. This material, consisting mainly of aluminum, silicon, and iron, was used to deoxidize laboratory-scale melts ranging from 7 to 100 pounds. Oxygen analysis showed that the aluminizing dross was effective in reducing oxygen levels in steel. A direct comparison with aluminum wire showed the dross material to be at least as effective. Under similar test conditions with 7-pound melts, 3 grams of aluminum reduced the oxygen concentration from 210 to 175 ppm, while 4 grams of aluminizing dross (equivalent to approximately 2 grams aluminum) reduced the oxygen concentration from 250 to 170 ppm. An additional 4 grams of aluminizing dross produced a final oxygen concentration of 140 ppm.

This publication presents a simplified graphic method for determining the explosibility of mine atmospheres under mine-fire conditions from mine- atmosphere composition data. Sometimes it is necessary to seal part of a mine during a fire to exclude air and thus extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, liberation of methane and formation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the sealed area may create an ex- plosive or flammable atmosphere if enough oxygen is present to support combustion. On the other hand, the oxygen concentration may be reduced through combustion processes and the concentration of inert gases (nitrogen and carbon dioxide) increased enough to render the atmosphere within the sealed area non-explosive. Before an area is unsealed, it is extremely important to know if the sealed atmosphere contains Flammable gases in proportions that might form explosive mixtures when air is introduced. If an explosive mixture forms and the fire is rekindled, a gas explosion will result. Various experimental methods may be used to determine the explosibility of a particular mine atmosphere; however, these methods usually are impracticable in the field.

The average quantity of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil in 1934 was 638,000 B.t.u., or about as much heat energy as contained in 5 gallons of fuel oil. Although the total heat utilized in 1934 was slightly above 1933, crude runs to stills increased 4 percent, hence the average requirement per barrel declined from 660,000 B.t.u. in 1933 to 638,000 B.t.u. in 1934 (see fig. 1). The average for 1934 constitutes a new record for firing efficiency, being just under the previous low of 1929. Heat consumption at refineries depends on many factors, of which the trends in yields of gasoline and lubricating oils are probably most important. The yield of gasoline is indicative of activity at cracking plants, which type of plant utilizes more than the average amount of heat per gallon of product. The yield of lubricating oils is indicative of the extent to which credo oil is refined; that is, it takes considerably more heat to refine a barrel of crude through lubricating oils than it does to separate only gasoline and kerosene. The yield of gasoline decreased from 43.7 percent in 1933 to 43.4 percent in 1934; on the other hand, the yield of gas oil and fuel oil increased. Although the yield of lubricating oils increased slightly in 1934 the theoretical increase in fuel requirements probably was offset by technical improvements, such as solvent refining.

A few years ago, (March 3, 1915) Congress passed a law providing for the establishments of ten mining experiment stations under the supervision of the Bureau of Mines. In 1917 the Secretary of the Interior decided that one of these stations should be devoted to Petroleum, and in the early part of 1918, approved the establishment of the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Oklahoma, upon the condition that the city furnish the site for the buildings and guarantee $50,000. for the erection of the buildings. A building site of 5 acres and the necessary building fund was furnished by the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce.The buildings consist of an administration and laboratory building, both of brick construction. The former is a two-story structure of eight rooms. A large room occupying over half of the main floor is devoted to the library, reception room, and clerical force. The remaining rooms comprise a drafting room and six offices occupied by the staff assigned to this station. The laboratory is a one-story brick building and contains a well-equipped chemical and physical laboratory, also a machine shop and mechanical laboratory. In addition to the main buildings there now are on the property an experimental refinery, a blue-print house, and a store house. These latter buildings are all of sheet-iron construction.

The total capacity of pipe stills increased 2.5 percent in 1934, and many of the less efficient shell stills were torn out.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in July, 1931, as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3134, under the title of "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to June 30, 1931." Changes in that list were authorized in August, September, October, November, and December, 1931, and January and March, 1932, as published in Reports of Investigations 3140, 3147, 3150, 3155, 3158, 3161, and 3163, respectively. Combining contract and in-house research, the Bureau of Mines has developed and inmine-tested a novel device to improve the field-of-view of operators of off-highway mining equipment. This device utilizes a downward-looking, flat fresnel lens. The lens, plus louvers to reduce glare, is housed in a protective steel structure. The complete unit is called a blind area viewer. The viewer, when mounted on the right- front corner of the deck of most large haulage trucks, will increase a driver&apos;s direct field-of-view from about 35 pct (of where he/she has to drive) to about 80 pct. The improved visibility allows the driver to see possible collision hazards and roadway obstacles better, thus improving mine safety and increasing productivity. Economic analysis shows that the blind area viewers, which are now commercially available, pay for themselves in about a month on a 170-ton-capacity truck. The viewers are also applicable to other large mining equipment, such as front-end loaders, draglines, and downhole drills, or any place where seeing around a corner would be advantageous, such as along conveyor flights in processing plants during startups.

The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers&apos; positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.
