The frequency of mine fires during recent years, with an apparent increase in recent months, has focused attention on the necessity of reducing this hazard by every means possible. Investigation reports are available on 51 mine fires of electrical origin between August 15, 1949, and August 16, 1954. Nine other fires in the same period were suspected as being of electrical origin. Every mine fire is a potential hazard to underground workmen; it is remarkable that only six lives were lost as a result of these fires, since the injury list was very high. Modern mining methods, with increased power demands and extended distribution systems underground, involve greater electrical hazards and possibilities of costly production delays as a result of inadequate electrical service. Improvements in electric-power-distribution facilities in many underground coal mines is desirable. The purpose of this paper is to show the need for this improvement as revealed by studies and investigations of electric-power-distribution systems representative of those in a large number of coal mines.

Some typical thiacyclopentanes and thiacyclohexanes were synthesized to provide reference compounds needed for the identification of sulfur compounds in crude oils. Two general methods of synthesis were employed: (1) cleavage of 2-alkyltetrahydropyrans with hydrogen bromide followed by the reaction of the resulting dibromoalkanes with sodium sulfide and (2) the catlyzed reaction of cyclic ethers or 1)4-or 1)5-alkanediols with hydrogen sulfide. Both methods produced mixtures of 2-alkylthiacyclopentanes and 2-alkylthiacyclohexanes with 2-alkyltetrahydropyran as the starting material. The structures of the reaction products were established by analysis for sulfur; desulfurization; gas-liquid chromatography (GLC); mass, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra; and an alternate synthesis. The synthesis of the cyclic sulfides contributed substantially to the identification of 10 members of this class of sulfur compounds in crude oil.

The Allah Cooper mine, in Louisa County, Va., formerly was a producer of lead and zinc. It was believed that the critical shortage of leach and zinc and the fact that some ore had been produced at this mine justified exploration of it. A preliminary examination was made on April 30, 1943, by J. E. Hill, a Bureau of Mines Engineer. Diamond drilling was done on the property from November 30 to December 18, 1943, to determine whether the sulfide body extended to depth. One hole drilled to a depth of 650 feet and located so as to cut the Allah Cooper ore shoot about 150 feet below the lowest known mine workings failed to disclose sulfide vein at that depth.

"INTRODUCTION Canister-type gas masks have become an essential part of the equipment of many industries, not only for use in emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres.Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices, and this bureau has become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investi-gations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.TYPES OF CANISTERS EXAMINEDThis investigation included tests of the following types of canisters:(a) Gas-mask canister filled with 725 c.c. of granular activated charcoal, 8 to 14 mesh, and of a quality used in gas masks which meet the Bureau of Mines approval requirements 4 for protection against organic vapors."

The investigation reported in this paper is one of several included in a broad program of developing new or improved concentration processes for the oxidized and partly oxidized deposits of lead and zinc, A sample from the Playter lease, Newton County, Mo., containing pyromorphite was successfully concentrated by fatty acid flotation to a grade of over 62 percent lead. Owing to the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead at that grade was limited to 44 percent. DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY OF PROPERTY The mineral pyromorphite is a chlorophosphate of lead containing 76.4 percent lead, and, although it occurs frequently in association with other lead minerals, it is considered a minor ore mineral of lead. The manner of occurrence of oxidized lead minerals, including pyromorphite, which frequently are no larger in grain size than the clay with which they are found, militates both against development of a simple beneficiation process and high recovery. The profitable exploitation of such deposits depends not only on a successful treatment procedure but a highly favorable metal market as well. For these, and perhaps other reasons, very little research has been done on the recovery of pyromorphite from its deposits.

For the proper control of gasoline treating plants there is need of a quick test for corrosion. In "sweetening" gasoline that is, in treating it to remove evil smelling mercaptans or to convert them to disulphides or sulphides the sodium plumbite ("doctor") method is generally used. This method involves agitation of the gasoline with "doctor solution's (sodium plumbite made by dissolving litharge in a solution of caustic soda) in the presence of free sulphur3. One of the common mistakes in the technique of this process is the addition of too much free sulphur, which will dissolve in the gasoline and cause it to be corrosive. In the operation of a continuous sweetening; or treating plant, a check on the corrosiveness of they product is imperative at all times. The copper-strip test commonly used in specifications take, so long to perform that the plant may fail to function properly for some time before the operator discovers it. The writer has investigated a rapid corrosion test method involving the use of metallic mercury, recently developed by Messrs. G. T. Granger, refinery superintendent, and A. B. Comstock, chief chemist, of the Barnsdall Refineries, Inc., Okmulgee, Okla. They have used this test successfully for several months in controlling the operation of their continuous treaters any have come to the conclusion that it has several advantages over the copper-strip test. Chief among these is the time caved, as the copper-strip test takes at least one-half hour, while the mercury test can be wade in about five minutes. It is very evident that this is an important item in controlling a continuous treater.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the capability of mine roof supports so that the selection and design of these supportsare compatible with the conditions in which they are to be employed. This report describes a study that investigates three parameters influencing the load-carrying capability of wood crib supports: height, configuration, and horizontal displacement. Four crib heights, four parallelogram configurations, and three ratlos of horizontal-to-vertical displacements were tested on full-scale wood crib supports in a mine roof simulator. Test results indicated a reduction in load-carrying capability for increases in crib height. Increasing the contact area by changing the intersecting angle between crib blocks to form parallelogram configurations provided a slight increase in load-carrying capability for the first 10 to 12 in of vertical convergence, after which the cribs became more unstable, resulting in significantly less load-carrying capability. Horizontal displacements did not appreciably affect the load-carrying capability of wood crib supports for the range of vertical displacements (less than 10 in) likely to be encountered underground. This report documents these tests and postulates some explanations of failure mechanics for the observed behavior.

Spark ignition of combustible-gas mixtures is a relatively old subject of investigation and has been treated both experimentally and analytically by many people. Elements of static and current electricity are almost always present in mining and industrial operations, and the spark can be an extremely efficient source of ignition. Thus the practical interest of such problems as the "intrinsic safety" of electrical apparatus is obvious. Ignition and quenching phenomena are the primary laboratory representatives of combustion phenomena that are dynamically nonsteady, and such nonsteady phenomena playa considerable part both in industrial processes and in safety matters, although they are of less immediate practical interest. Considerable effort has been expended by the Federal Bureau of Mines in investigations of spark ignition.5 6 7 8/ Primarily, this work has established the significance of several of the parameters involved. This is the second report to be presented on th application of stress analysis to underground Mining problems. In part I2/ of this investigation the stress distribution around single openings in unidirectional and hydrostatic stress fields was analyzed. Relationships between maximum stress concentration and size and shape of openings were determined by the photoelastic method. In most cases the results were verified by mathematical methods This report considers the stress distribution in pillars formed by two or more openings in a. unidirectional stress field. Relationships between stress concentrations and size and shape of pillars are developed. Applied to mining, results snow how estimates may be made of the stress distribution in pillars, what factors cause high local stresses, and how local stress concentrations may be reduced by proper design of mine openings. The photoelastic method was used, as in Part I, to study the stress distributions, and, whenever possible, the results were verified mathematically. A description of the photoelastic method and equipment is .given in Part I.

S. Bureau of Mines. This report presents data collected during research by the Bureau of Mines on corrosion of grinding media. Corrosion rates of eight alloys commonly used in grinding media were tested in synthetic mill water using an ultrasonic grinding device especially designed for this work. Electro-chemical measurements showed variations in corrosion rates for these alloys between 9.8 mpy for medium-carbon steels and 0.14 mpy for high chromium white irons. Bureau data are discussed along with data from the literature to indicate that corrosion causes less than 10 pct of the wear of grinding media in commercial grinding mills. A comparison of corrosion rates for various types of grinding media shows that alloying elements and electrochemically active inclusions in steel affect the corrosion behavior of the media.

"It is well known that the lost coal left in the ground in mining, under such conditions that recovery is practically impossible, constitutes a large proportion of the coal in the beds worked. A recent estimate, in a paper on ""The World's Fuel Supply"" presented by Prof. L. P. Breckinridge, of Yale University, before the Annual Meeting of the. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, places the average loss in bituminous coal mining as one-third left in the ground.The bald statement that there is a loss of one ton of coal for every two recovered may seem to those not familiar with coal mining to imply inexcusable and wanton waste. Perhaps a better way of expression is in terms of total recovery rather than in terms of losses. Many mine superintendents and mine owners will readily concede that their total recovery may be only 60 to 75 per cent, but to state that they are wasting 25 to 40 per cent arouses antagonism. The suggestion is of willful waste, whereas the majority of the operators try to the best of their ability to get a high recovery under the adverse and complex conditions that confront them. These involve natural, commercial, and labor conditions, and the requirement in many cases of boundary pillars under railroads and buildings, which may be called for in the deed or lease, or in the absence of specific exemption in the deed or lease, the common law requirement that a surface owner is entitled to the support of the surface."

Following the severe starch-dust explosion in the casting department of a large candy factory nearly 2 years ago, great interest has been shown in the explosive properties and the safe manufacture and handling of powdered starches. Under the auspices of the National Fire Protection Association, a committee has been formed to prepare a code aimed at preventing dust explosions in the confectionery industry. One objective of this code will be to reduce the explosion hazards of starches that are widely used for molding, dusting, and other candy-manufacturing processes. The explosibilities of starches and starch mixtures have been studied in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines and elsewhere. The results of the initial experiments made by the Bureau on 10 samples of cornstarch and mixtures of cornstarch with other materials have been published. In response to numerous requests for additional information, further laboratory studies have been conducted. Data have been obtained on the effects of dust concentration, particle size, moisture content, admixture of .calcium carbonate, and on the effect of oil treatment on the explosibility of cornstarch. The results of this investigation are summarized in this report.

"The prevailing practice of washing unsized coal, 1/2-inch and finer, to 1/8-inch and finer, on a table is subject to certain limitations which are commonly overlooked. In some instances good results are obtained by this method, but often the opposite is true and the efficiency of the washing operation is low. Although the separation taking place on a concentrating table is not fully understood, the actual distribution of particles of various sizes and specific gravities was determined a number of years ago by ore-dressing investigators. Hence this paper consists of an analysis of an old problem by new methods. The experimental data on which the discussion is based were obtained in the course of coal-washing investigations conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at the Northwest Experiment Station in cooperation with the University of Washington and with certain coal operator: of that State.Experimental WorkThe general method of study has been to take a large number of zonal products from the table, and separate them according to specific gravity and size into their component parts. The table used is one of the standard commercial sizes with a diagonal deck. The coal to be washed is split into representative portions, which are stored in separate bins. One portion is used for ""timing as"" the table; the products are collected continuously in the same turned to the feed bin, and thus a closed circuit is completed. When the despite conditions on the table are obtained, coal is fed from one of the re. After the table is operating smoothly the entire product is minute; such a sample is sufficiently large to represent accurately the work of the table and at the same time to minimize the effect of beginning at the end next to the head motion, separate samples are made for each foot along the edge of the deck."

Auxiliary equipment was assembled around a purchased oscillograph to permit observation of the current and voltage characteristics of low-energy, capacitance-discharge sparks having durations of at least 10 mµ-sec. Circuit details of the assembled apparatus, performance characteristics of the complete system, and some preliminary data from representative self-initiated sparks are given in this report. INTRODUCTION One of the subjects of continuing research by the Federal Bureau of Mines Division of Explosives Technology is the ignition of explosive-gas mixtures by means of low-energy capacitance sparks. Quite early in these investigations it was recognized that understanding the gas-ignition phenomena would be facilitated by detailed information about the performance of the ignition source (spark) under the actual conditions of interest; however, the sparks of practical interest are nonrepetitive transient phenomena whose duration could reasonably be estimated to be in the time range of 1 mµsec. to 1 µsec. As such, the only feasible method of obtaining detailed information was and is oscillographic representation of the pertinent current and voltage transients. It was not until 1947 that a suitable, commercial, dual-channel oscillograph could be obtained as the basic instrument for these studies; the instrument specified in 1947 was delivered in 1950. Tailings dumps at Mercur, Utah, contain about $7 million worth of gold in 3.5 million tons of mill tailings assaying about 0.07 ounce of gold per ton. Commercial mining and milling at Mercur ceased in 1942. To determine whether improved technology was now available that might permit economic reprocessing of the Mercur dumps, the Bureau of Mines probed for a low-cost method that would be applicable to these tailings. A composite sample prepared for laboratory studies assayed 0.062 ounce gold per ton. About 10 percent of the gold occurred as a water-soluble cyanide. Conventional cyanide leaching dissolved 32 percent of the gold, and hot, strong cyanide solution dissolved 42 percent. Results were not improved by pretreatment with acids, bases, or oxidants. After expensive preroasting, gold recovery by cyanidation was increased to 65 percent. The simple procedures were ineffective, and more effective procedures were too costly for economical processing of Mercur tailings.

This paper3/ is one of a limited series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a more extensive series on mining and preparation methods in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes ventilation methods and practices at the anthracite collieries in the Northern field of the anthracite measures of Pennsylvania as obtained by personal inspections in twenty of the larger collieries during 1933 and 1934 and from supplementary information furnished then and later by operating officials. This field is one of the four major divisions - Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern - into which the anthracite deposits of Pennsylvania are naturally divided, and constitutes, in plan, a slightly bowed lens, about 60 miles long, and that extends from Forest City on the north through Scranton, Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, and Nanticoke to Shickshinny on the south with a. maximum width of 6 miles. It is the oldest and largest producing field of the four, and has produced continuously from 1S09. The total anthracite production for the State reached a peak of about 100,000,000 tons a year in 1917, but in recent years production has averaged about 50,000,000 tons, of which somewhat over half comes from this Northern field. The operations of three of the largest producing organizations in the State are almost wholly included in this field, as well as about half of the operations of two others of the six largest producers, It comprises the first 14 of the 25 numerically designated anthracite State inspection districts.

Investigations over several years have disclosed that the principal manners of occurrence of shuttle-car injuries are in order: 1. Victims in contact with roof or crossbars. 2. Victims in contact with ribs or timber legs. 3. Victims falling from, or jerked from, shuttle cars. 4. Victims in contact with overhanging brows or protruding pine for pin timbers, or water lines. 5. Contact with persons or collisions with parked equipment. 6. Victims injured by roof falls or falling timbers caused by knocking out roof supports with shuttle cars. 7. Victims injured by runaway shuttle cars. 8. Victims injured while loading or unloading timbers or other materials from shuttle cars. These recurring types of shuttle-car accidents reflect the physical conditions of the working sections, certain safety deficiencies in shuttle-car maintenance and design, and unsafe practices by operators.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrothermal sulfidation (HTS) and chloride leaching procedure to recover lead and silver from plumbojarosite. The plumbojarosite, generated during pressure-oxidative leaching of zinc concentrate in a commercial operation, contained, in percent, 25.4 Pb, 18.8 Fe, 1.4 Zn, 29.5 sulfate (S042.), 3.2 elemental sulfur (SO), 13.4 total S, and 7.4 tr oz/st Ag. The HTS was conducted in an autoclave and converted the plumbojarosite into amorphous iron oxide and liberated the Pb and Ag as sulfides (S2) The best operating conditions were 50 g of plumbojarosite and 7 pct So (2.04 g So added) in 500 mL of 2.0-mol/L NH3 at 150° C for 1 h. The sulfidation product contained, in percent, 37 Pb, 28 Fe, 2 S042., 7 total S, and 11.2 tr oz/st Ag. Flotation of the sulfidation product was conducted at pH 3 with 15-pct pulp density and 2.4lb/st of isopropyl xanthate as collector. The flotation concentrate contained 43 pct Pb, 25 pct Fe, and 13 tr oz/st Ag. FeCl3 leaching of the sulfidation product in a resin kettle extracted 98 pct Pb and 97 pct Ag from the sulfidation product, and HCI-Oz leaching in a shaker glass bottle extracted 99 pct Pb and 98 pct Ag. Both leach residues met the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (EPA-TCLP) standards for nonhazardous wastes. The HTS and chloride leaching procedure is a potentially effective method for detoxification of plumbojarosite-bearing residue from the zinc pressure-leaching circuit.

The Bureau of mines evaluated the elution of uranyl carbonate from a strong base resin with a mixed carbonate eluant in a fluidized system. The system consisted of a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) elution column with a continuous flow of solution, except for short periods when the resin increments were withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl carbonate from the mill-loaded strong base resin with an eluant composed of 1.0 [M] NaaCOs plus 1.0 [M] NH4HCO3 was studied. The effects of solution flow rate, aqueous-to-resin flow ratio, column diameter, compartment height, initial resin concentration, and column length were examined. The experimental data indicate that for the eluant examined, a resin residence time of 240 minutes is necessary to attain 90-percent elution efficiency. Also provided is a technique for sizing an elution MCIX column form pilot plant experimental data.
