"INTRODUCTION The property of the Silver Spot Mines Co. is in the Boston Hill area within and adjacent to the southwest corner of Silver City, N. Mex. The area was visited by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ in 1941 and 1942 during the investigation of possible sources of manganese. The area was visited again in November 1944 4/ to study the possibilities of geophysical exploration of the manganiferous-iron deposits. This geophysical work was performed in 1945 5/, confirmed the existence of known deposits of manganiferous-iron ores, and indicated the probable extent and situation of others.The Silver Spot property was churn-drilled from 1926 to 1929 during exploration for manganiferous-iron ores. The sludges from a number of the holes indicated low-grade lead-zinc mineralization. Lead and zinc minerals also were found on the dumps of some of the old shafts when the property was visited by D. H. Mullen, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines late in 1946. A diamond-drilling project was proposed. It was started in April 1947 with the intention of investigating the best of the known ore indications as shown by the old churn-drill holes and thus gathering new data upon which to base future work. Only one hole was drilled before the project was terminated because of lack of funds and time."

[This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining legislation of Bulgaria was prepared from a copy (in French) of the Mining Laws of Bulgaria, promulgated by Royal Decree No. 33 of I. arch. 31, 1910, and published in the "Journal Official," No. 83, April 14, 1910, and checked against a digest prepared by Maynard B. Barnes, First Secretary, American Legation, Sofia, Bulgaria, dated June 10, 1932, which was transmitted through the courtesy of the Department of State. CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL SUBSTANCES Mineral deposits are classed either as mines or quarries. (Art. l.) Tunes are deposits, the products from which must be processed. Under this class specific mention is made of the metals (gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron, chrome, titanium manganese, tungsten, tin, mercury, platinum, cobalt, nickel, cadmium, aluminum, molybdenum, bismith, uranium, antimony, arsenic), sulphur and other "analogous" mineral substances, phosphate rock, iron pyrites, sulphates, saltpeter, alum, boracic acid and its compounds, talc, asbestos, amber, graphite, merschaum and precious stories of all kinds, reek salt and other salt, peat, coal, petroleum, ozocerite, asphalt and all other bituminous substances. A new nonclogging water spray system for continuous-mining machines has been developed under contract with the Bureau of Mines. This paper presents installation and operating guidelines for the system, which consists of improved and easily maintained machine-mounted hardware, including an inline Y-strainer, a hydrocyclone, a backup filter, and two quick-opening valves for flushing particulates from the strainer and hydrocyclone. Underground tests with continuous-mining machines have shown that when properly installed and maintained, the new sys tern virtually eliminates nozzle clogging and thus greatly reduces spray maintenance. The sys tern is relatively inexpensive and has been installed on typical continuous-mining machines for a total cost under $1,000.

"In addition to the usual interpretation that is placed on the words ""thief"" and ""thieves"", the petroleum industry also uses these words when referring to an instrument that is used for taking samples of oil from a tank or reservoir. It is an abbreviation of the term ""thief-tube"". It is desirable in sampling volumes of oil in tanks or reservoirs to obtain samples at different intervals below the surface of the fluid, because of the variation in the character of the oil at different depths. It is for this purpose that the ""thief"" is used.The subject of oil thieves is probably as old as the oil industry itself. Opinions as to which is the most practical instrument for thieving oil in tanks, to obtain a true average sample, differ wherever oil is produced and is analyzed. Every district, and even many of the companies within the district, will have different appliances for ""grabbing"" oil samples. It is interesting to note in passing that though the thief has an apparently insignificant part in the handling of oil, yet the results depending on it are of paramount importance practically every branch of the transportation, refining, and marketing of petroleum. Determinations, particularly dependent on a representative sample, are made by the centrifuge, laboratory distillation tests, and the hydrometer.The purpose of this article is to discuss conditions found in the California fields. Only a general description of types of thieves and the methods of using them will be given. However, it is believed sufficient data are given to enable the reader to form his own opinion as to which of the devices is most practicable under the prevailing conditions. Thieves of all types have their good points, speaking broadly, and it is possible to get good results with any of them, provided they are operated according to instructions and with due care. In work of this kind the advantages or disadvantages reside in the person operating the instrument rather than in the instrument used."

As a part of the program of the Rare and. Precious Metals Experiment Station, Reno, Nev., in connection with investigations of treatment methods for precious and precious-base metal ores, to further conservation and recovery of precious and base metals, tests Were made on samples from the Buzzard Mine, located in the vicinity of Placerville, Calif. These samples represented ore exposed during previous development work, in tunnels and a shaft on the property, including highly oxidized material from the surface zone and sulfide ores from depths of 150 to 300 feet. The surface samples contained little base metal and only enough gold 80 that economic exploitation of them would depend on development of a large tonnage of ore, low-cost mining methods, and satisfactory treatment methods. The sulfide samples were valuable enough to warrant further exploration and development and, if present in suitable tonnage, the installation of a treatment plant for recovery of both precious and base metals. The oxidized surface-zone samples carried 0.11 to 0.14 ounce gold per ton. Standard amalgamation and flotation tests of these samples gave low recoveries. Standard cyanidation tests indicated high consumption of lime and cyanide and gold extraction of 79.4 and 82.7 percent. Water-leaching the ore after crushing to minus 10-mesh improved cyanidation considerably. Ex-tractions of 82.7 to 85.8 percent were obtainec1 with lime consumption of 6 to 7 pounds per ton of ore and cyanide consumptions of 1 to 4 pounds. Grinding the samples to minus 200-mesh followed by water-leaching and cyanidation gave improved extractions of 91-92 percent of the gold, but with slightly increased consumptions of lime and cyanide.

Economic solutions of problems of mine-ventilation improvement can be found by mathematical analyses of alternative methods of procedure, but, in the case of our older bituminous-coal mines, the airway network is usually so complex that mathematical solutions are too tedious to be practical. Recourse usually is made to extremely costly and uncertain trial-and-error procedures with the existing layout and equipment. The resulting errors often prove costly and sometimes create hazardous conditions. Both the economic and safely aspects of alternative methods of ventilation improvement may be rapidly and cheaply investigation with analogue computers. An electrical analogue computer, designed and built especially for analyzing mine-ventilation-distribution problems, has been placed in service by the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh, Pa., Experiment Station. It is a nonlinear, low-voltage, fluid network analyzer of a type developed by Malcolm S. Mcllroy, professor of electrical engineering at Cornell University. It was designed in close coopera¬tion with Professor Mcllroy and built by the Standard Electric Time Co., Springfield, Mass. It is the seventh unit of this type to be placed in service and the first designed for mine airflow problems. The other six were designed for either water- or gas-distribution analyses. Three are much larger and more expensive units. The largest unit has a capacity of 20 sources, 576 mains, and 180 loads, or regulated-flow paths. The Bureau unit has a capacity of 5 sources, 128 mains, and 48 loads.

The purpose of this work was to develop and field test improved knee protection for underground coal miners working in low seam mines. In a previous phase of this contract (Sanders, 1982), experimental knee pads were developed and field tested. The field test revealed several design deficiencies with the knee pads, and suggestions for improving the design were made. The work summarized in this report, therefore, consists of modifying the design and method of fabrication of the knee pads originally describes by Sanders (1982), and of field testing the improved design. The new prototype was shorter and wider than the original design, and used a neoprene pass-through strap design rather than a cloth strap molded into the pad itself. The new prototype was constructed by slush molding a hollow bladder that was then filled with foam. Initial reactions to the pads in the field test were very positive. However, after two months, the opinions about the new prototype became less positive. They were judged, generally, to be no better or worse than the pads usually worn by the field-test participants. Problems were encountered in the field with respect to durability. Water seeped into the inner cavity of many of the pads and caused the foam to deteriorate. It was concluded that it would not be cost-effective or feasible to significantly improve upon current commercially available knee pad designs.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on tunnel-driving methods. The practices described are those used at No. 11 mine of the Colony Coal Co., Denver, Colo. No. 11 Mine is situated at Dines, some 14 miles north of Rook Springs, in Sweetwater County, Wyo. It is served by a spur off the Winton branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Colony Coal Co.'s mines were opened in 1918, and since that time have been among the largest producers of coal for the railroad and domestic markets in the Rock Springs coal district.

This paper is one of a series describing methods and costs of recovering sand and gravel from alluvial deposits in the United States and deals directly with the methods employed by the Portland Gravel Co. in operating a clamshell dredge on the Willamette River near Portland, Oreg., and a pump dredge on the Columbia River near Vancouver, Wash. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs may in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

Ion elutriation was used to extract silver cyanide complexes and free cyanide from aqueous streams containing up to 10 ppm silver and 5 ppm free cyanide. Screening tests selected nine of 350 different surfactants for further, larger scale experiments. The screening procedure used 0.1 g of each of the surfactants in 300 mL of synthetic wastewater. Air was sparged into the test cell at 50 cc/min. The foam was refluxed during the tests and was not sampled. Samples of the solution were taken at specified intervals and analyzed by wet chemical methods for free cyanide and by atomic absorption for silver content. The most effective surfactants lowered the silver and free cyanide concentrations to less than 0.5 ppm in 1 h or less. These surfactants were quaternary amine salts with one long chain (C12-C18) organic group and three methyl groups. Experiments using 3 L batches of wastewater or an ion elutriation cell continuously fed with solution draining from an inactive heap leach operation confirmed the results from the screening tests.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated all previously approved gas masks to determine their ability to provide respiratory protection against each of the following six selected amines: ethylenediamine, diethylamine, n-butylamine, ethylamine, methylamine, and hydrazine. Minimum requirements were a 24-minute service life at a flow rate of 64 liters per minute (32 liters per minute for hydrazine) and an amine concentration of 1.0 volume-percent (0.5 volume-percent for hydrazine). The three masks meeting these requirements were the LG4, Willson Products Division, The Electric Storage Battery Co.; the GMD-SS, Mine Safety Appliances Co.; and the 084-PHOV-R, Acme Protection Equipment Co.

Investigations were conducted to develop spectrochemical methods capable of determining 0.01 to 100 micrograms of metals in 50 milliliters of solution. The use of gallium hydroxide (Ga(OH)3) as a carrier-precipitant to concentrate metallic ions is described. A porous-cup graphite electrode is used to collect the precipitate. A specially designed plunger permits the electrode assembly to serve as the sample-containing electrode in the subsequent spec-trographic analysis. Analytical curves are presented for antimony, arsenic, beryllium, and zinc. Sensitivities of detection are given for 13 elements. The techniques were applied to identify impurities separated from tungsten, to determine trace impurities in solutions containing high concentrations of magnesium, cobalt, or nickel, and to identify trace impurities in hydrofluoric acid. Laboratory glassware was a serious source of contamination when low levels of zinc were determined.

Researchers at the Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for re- generating chromic acid-sulfuric acid etching solutions used in metal surface treatment operations. The technique utilizes a diaphragm cell equipped with a cation-selective membrane to oxidize cr3+ to cr6+ at the anode and to remove copper, the major metallic contaminant, at the cathode. Normally, spent etchant is discarded after approximately 3 days of use. Using the electrolytic cell, the etchant can be used for a year without replacement, From data obtained from industrial-scale cells, the installation of a regeneration cell with a 1,000-gal catholyte- holding tank has been estimated to save at least $240 per day, The payback period for the investment is estimated to be about 10 mo or less. Because the magnitude of these cost savings will vary at different locations, several graphs are presented to aid in calculating payback for a specific site. Using these graphs and the capital costs presented in this study, the payback period can be determined for installing a regeneration cell with a 500- or a 1,000-gal catholyte-holding tank in an existing surface treatment plant.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation a device was developed that permits the determination of the modulus of elasticity of the stress-relief cores obtained in the process of making in situ stress measurements. This determination is made by hydraulically loading the external surface of the stress-relief cores and by measuring the corresponding borehole deformation. The theoretical relationship between the borehole deformation, the applied pressure, and the modulus of elasticity is presented. Also, experimental results obtained from measurements on a simulated stress-relief core made of aluminum and on a limestone stress-relief core are given. Because of the symmetrical loading obtained with this device, the isotropy of the core material can be evaluated. With this device it is also possible to study the effect of eccentricity, that is, the effect within cores in which the inner hole is not coincident with the long axis of the specimen.

Coal dust explosions are routinely conducted within the full-scale experimental mine at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory?s (PRL) Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) to meet the needs of numerous safety and health research programs. Many of these explosion tests over the years involved igniting different coal dust and limestone rock dust mixtures (up to 80% by volume rock dust). Following four more recent tests, floor dust samples have been collected and analyzed using the alcohol coking test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results compared to estimate the flame travel.

This paper is based largely on a study of experimental data obtained by the Bureau of Mines in its comprehensive 25-year survey of the carbonizing properties of American coals. Although the Bureau was interested in and conducted carbonization research-from time to time ever since it was organized in 1910 (1),4/ no systematic studies of the coke-, gas-, and byproduct-making properties of American coals were undertaken until 1927, when the American Gas Association appointed an advisory committee (2) to cooperate with the Bureau in developing equipment and techniques to obtain-data for the accurate assessment of the behavior of coals on carbonization. It was found, in general, that small-scale laboratory tests were unsuitable for the complete evaluation of the coking properties of coal; hence, larger pilot-plant-scale equipment was designed and used (3). It was decided that the scale of the test should be large enough to determine both the yield and quality of the products and yet small enough to maintain adequate control of the process variables (4). These considerations led to development of a carbonizing retort and furnace-of 80 to 200 pounds of coal capacity, suitable for operation at various temperatures up to 1,100° C. (2,0120 F.) and equipment for recovery and measurement of gas and byproducts. This apparatus and the standardized procedure for its operation became known as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (EM-AGA) method or retort (5).

This paper describing the mining methods employed and setting forth prevailing, costs at the property, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with properties in various mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Vipond mine is a gold property located at Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and operated by the Vipond Consolidated Mines (Ltd.). For the past fiscal year (ended July 31. 1930) ore was mined and milled at the rate of 310 tons per day, and the value of the bullion produced was $896,397.61.

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. Appreciation is expressed for the general spirit of helpful cooperation which was evidenced in the activities of all those who took part in the work. Video technology is becoming an important tool for many designers of industrial training programs. This report describes how trainers at the Minntac Mine, Mt. Iron, MN, have developed videocassettes of safe job procedures (SJP's) for training miners assigned to perform unfamiliar work tasks. All steps necessary for videocassette production, from idea to finished product, as well as the required equipment and prices, are listed and/or briefly explained. Minntac officials believe that the SJP videocassettes have contributed significantly to a reduction in mine accidents.

The canopy-air curtain was originally developed by the Bureau of Mines to surround the operator of a continuous mining machine with a zone of clean air. This report describes the application and testing of a canopy-air curtain on a gathering-arm loader, as well as some of the problems associated with providing a zone of clean air to a standing, semimobile operator. The area of air-curtain coverage and effects of air velocity are discussed. In its present form, the canopy-air curtain provides a 50 percent reduction in respirable dust to the operator.
