Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. "Introduction In the course of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines into the various causes of coal-mine explosions, the fact that several gas explosions had occurred during or very soon after a mine was being un-watered, attracted the attention of the Bureau's engineers. The apparent coincidence was so marked that there appears to be an extra hazard present, whenever water, which has been standing against the face of the coal for some time, is suddenly removed either by natural drainage or by mechanical means.Actual Occurrences Case 1. - A typical illustration of this hazard is shown in a gas explosion which occurred in a mine in Central Pennsylvania. Four main entries, 50 feet apart with an average grade of 6 per cent, had been driven with the dip of the coal, and from these mains 7 pairs of entries, at intervals of 800 feet, had been turned at such an angle that their grade was slightly rising. Prom these latter pairs of entries, rooms were turned practically at right angles.The main entries had been driven for 4,500 feet and at the face there was 400 feet of cover. As far as could be observed, the roof was of sandstone and the floor of clay.The coal bed being mined was the Lower Kittanning, which has a thickness of about 4 feet. The recovery of phosphate rack from the ores in the land-pebble district of Florida is a simple washing and screening operation. In the gashing plants coarse phosphate only is saved. Log-Washer overflows and screen-undersize products containing an appreciable content of fine phosphate are discarded. The phosphate grains in the material discharged to waste are generally finer in size than the mesh--14 to 20 mesh or 0.346 to 0.03 inch--of the finest screen in the washer. The operators state that the washers ordinarily recover from 50 to 60 per cent of the phosphate content of the matrix mined. Any increase that can be effected in the recovery of phosphate would be of advantage to the industry and would conserve the mineral resources of the country. In considering possible methods that might increase the recovery obtained in phosphate-washing plants the application of flotation, if it could be successfully developed, seemed to warrant investigation.

Develop a training program to help mine workers effectively fight small fires in underground Goal mines. Training would enable miners to make rapid judgments on whether to attempt extinguishment, and how best to use the firefighting equipment on hand. Approach Fire reports were analyzed to define and delineate physical and behavioral variables which affect firefighting activities, and to determine effective procedures for extinguishing small fires. A course was then designed to train miners in such procedures. Finally, the course was reviewed by industry experts and administered to a group of miners to determine needed revisions and to validate the course. How It Works Analysis of fire data showed that six items should be emphasized in teaching proper fire response: 1. Alertness to fire potential. 2. Immediate power cutoff. 3. Internal, external communication. 4. Teamwork in fighting fires. 5. Role of ventilation and position of men inby the fresh air side. 6. Effective use of fire suppressant materials.

Provide an operator cab to assure protection, comfortable use of controls, and good visibility. Approach A cab which raises and lowers by pivoting about d horizontal axis was Installed on two S&S cleanup tractors and tested in two underground working mines. How It Works Hydraulic cylinders actuated by a lever inside the cab cause the cab to pivot about a horizontal axis. This action raises or lowers the cab height. The total cab excursion is 14 inches. A release valve in the hydraulic system allows the cab to lower automatically if struck by a roof load or overhead obstruction. The pivoting action of the cab is engineered so that the operator maintains comfortable use of all controls at all cab heights. The movement is such that the angular relationship of the operator's ankles With the tram and brake foot controls IS consistently within 90 to 100 degrees. Figure 1 outlines the approximate position of the operator at three cab elevations.

At the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers are pursuing this vision of safety and health through a fact-finding approach for reducing injury illness in various mineral sectors. Surveillance data from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been the source for such analyses. It helps to focus research efforts on key machinery, workers, and their tasks. The second installment of this two-part series follows last month's focus on crushed stone.

Bureau of Mines research to recover arsenic from mining industry waste material and process streams is reported. Batch and column approaches were investigated for adsorbing arsenic from acid leach solutions and ion-exchange eluate solutions with hydrated titanium dioxide granules. A method for producing hydrated titanium dioxide granules was devised to provide material suitable for use in a packed adsorption tower. Selective adsorption of arsenic from acidic leach solutions was achieved. The loading capacity of arsenic on the granules was 14 wt-pct when synthetic solutions were used, but lower when actual leach solutions were used. Other elements in the leach solution were Zn, Cd, and In. The granules were used in an attempt to lower the arsenic content in a solution containing 0.95 g/l W and 0.027 g/l As from a process devised by the Bureau of Mines to treat Searles Lake brine. The arsenic content was lowered to less than 0.001 g/l, but unacceptable amounts of tungsten also were adsorbed by the granules. Adsorbed tungsten was partially stripped with pH 11.5 NaOH, and both tungsten and arsenic were completely stripped with 5M NaOH solution. Repeated loading and stripping of the granules had no effect on the loading capacity for arsenic.

In laboratory tests and actual mining conditions, the shearer-clearer has proved to be an effective dust control technique. Recent field experience however, has indicated that not enough technical information is available on proper installation of the improved shearer-clearer. This Technology News will provide details of the Improvements made to the shearer-clearer and provide guidelines for installing the system. How It Works The shearer-clearer system consists of several strategically-mounted water sprays and one or more passive barriers. The sprays redirect the airflow around the shearer into both a clean and a contaminated split. The sprays confine the contaminated split or dust cloud to the coal face, allowing the shearer operators to remain in the clean split on the walkway

Provide mine safety personnel, MSHA inspectors, and original-equipment manufacturers with guidelines and a check list for inspecting rollover protection structures (ROPS) being used in mining operations. The Problem ROPS are provided on mobile surface mining equipment to protect operators from such safety hazards as machine rollovers, falling objects, and collisions. However, the protective capability of a ROPS can be greatly reduced if it is damaged. Certain kinds of damage, such as hair- line cracks, corrosion, and loosened bolts, may occur as a result of normal machine use but may not be recognized as unsafe by untrained personnel. Therefore, the Bureau of Mmes designed a manual which can be used by mine personnel when inspecting ROPS equipment. The Manual The manual was prepared to help acquaint mine safety personnel and MSHA inspectors with typical ROPS deficiencies and their causes. It provides a systematic means for inspecting ROPS so that the identified deficiencies and their causes can be corrected. It is suggested that an inspection of the ROPS be conducted after every 1,000 h of equipment operation, or sooner if the structure has been subjected to any unusual loads which could cause damage, such as a rollover, highwall caving, or collision. The manual also details common deficiencies in the structure and attachment hardware which may affect the service life. The checklist, when used as instructed in the manual, provides a means for systematically inspecting the structure to ensure maximum protective capability and conformance with applicable Federal regulations.

The Bureau of Mines is examining a variety of low-grade uranium ores because projections indicate that an appreciable percentage of future U.S. uranium production will be derived from resources containing 0.01 to 0.1 percent U308. One possible source is represented by a granitic material from Wyoming; the available samples contained 0.06 and 0.12 percent U308. Tests were conducted to explore the general leaching characteristics of this potential resource. The material responded to both acidic and alkaline leaching techniques. Conventional acid leaching extracted 93 percent of the uranium in 18 hours; the required acid addition was 50 to 100 pounds of H2S04 per ton of ore, and the oxidant addition was 3 pounds of NaCl03 per ton of ore. The acid consumption continues after maximum uranium recovery has been reached; this effect may complicate heap or in situ leaching with acidic solutions. Some variation in reagent requirements was noted between the two ore samples. Conventional carbonate leaching with strong solutions at 85° C extracted 94 percent of the uranium in 24 hours. These granitic materials also showed some response to dilute carbonate solutions, and the results suggest that the material may be chemically amenable to heap or in situ leaching with dilute carbonate solutions.

Thls report summarizes work done under Bureau of Mines contract H0357100, "Development of a Crimp Connector for Trailing Cable Splices." The purpose of this effort was to establish optimum connector design conditions to meet flex cycle, pullout and electrical resistance criteria on phase power conductors. Field testing of "optimum design" connectors is briefly discussed. One of the primary objectives of contract H0357100 was to enable one to design better performing phase conductor connectors. Illustrating the practical significance of this 1s a discussion on the development of a new splice kit for trailing cables. The connectors in this kit were designed in accordance with the design methods described in the contract final report. Kit components, test data, and a connector installation tool are also discussed. The successful effort on the phase connector has resulted in contract H0377042, entitled "Design and Testing of Joining Sleeves for Trailing Cable Ground and Pilot Wires." The purpose of this contract (currently in effect) is to improve ground-conductor and pilot-wire performance. Significant findings to date are discussed.

Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. Model Description The magnetic field intensity components generated by a magnetic dipole immersed in an infinite homogeneous medium can be expressed in spherical coordinates as: [ ] where N, I, and (p a ) are the transmitting antenna turns, current, and effective area, respectively, and r is the range from the loops circumference to the measurement point. A procedure is described for recovering both lead and sulfur from galena flotation concentrate, comprising the following steps: (1) Aqueous oxidation of the concentrate, using ferric sulfate to convert lead sulfide to sulfate and to give elemental sulfur; (2) regeneration of the ferric sulfate by electrolysis in a diaphragm cell; (3) treatment of the leach residue with ammonium carbonate solution to change the lead to an acid-soluble form and to produce ammonium sulfate as a byproduct; (4) solution of the lead carbonate in hydro-fluosilicic acid followed by electrolysis to recover the lead as metal and regenerate the acid; and (5) extraction of the elemental sulfur from the final residue with an organic solvent. About 90 percent of the lead can be recovered by the above method as 99.9-percent-pure metal, together with two-thirds of the sulfur--half in the elemental form and half as ammonium sulfate.

So far as the propagation of electromagnetic waves is concerned, an underground tunnel behaves like a pipe or hollowed waveguide. Waves propagate in this tunnel with a low attenuation only if their frequency is higher than a so-called critical frequency which depends on the shape and mostly on the cross -dimensions of the tunnel and which value is in the neighbourhood of several tenths of MHz. However, when a metallic conductor is stretched along the gallery the electromagnetic characteristics of the latter are considerably modified and the effect of the cut-off frequency disappears; this is due to the fact that the gallery equipped with such a conductor works like a coaxial cable where the conductor serves as the outward conductor and the wall of the gallery as the return conductor. This is the principle of the monofilar waveguide cable which has been perfectly studied by Gabillard. Two mean characteristics of the monofilar mode are as follows: first of all, when the cable is suspended in the middle of the cross section of the gallery, the electromagnetic field occupies all the space between the wire and the walls of the gallery. When the wire is close to the wall, the electromagnetic field tends to become concentrated between the wire and the wall, with the consequence that, with the given monofilar mode power, the aerial of a receiver standing somewhere in the tunnel will capture a weaker and weaker signal. Secondly, owing to the fact that the mode of monofilar propagation uses the ground as return conductor, its power of propagation is considerably diminished; the closer the wire is to the wall the higher the attenuation, for only a very small part of the wall is utilized as return conductor. To cover great distances, everything else being equal, two or more conductors must be placed in the gallery. Assist in controlling or extinguishing fires that occur in abandoned mine lands (AML) by providing a compilation of information on past fire control projects, the estimated extent of the current problem, and factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML tires. Conventional fire control methods and their probable effectiveness are evaluated. Background Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard from toxic fumes, deterioration of air quality, and subsidence. Although fires on AML occur in every coal-producing State, the severity of the problem varies, with most underground fires occurring in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. Surface fires are prevalent in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and scaling, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success (see figures 1 and 2). Bureau of Mines Study The Bureau compiled information from a variety of sources and found that the problem of AML fires is a serious one. Such fires can involve a high degree of hazard and can be difficult and costly to control. AML fires usually involve smoldering combustion in outcrops, waste banks, or abandoned mines. Given the nature of these fires, it is unlikely that the extent of the problem or the cost of solutions will decrease in the near future.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn't toxic to personnel

This Bureau of Mines work was performed to theoretically determine the effects of specimen radius and specimen boundary conditions on the stress state in the rock near the anchor for rock specimens used to investigate expansion anchor behavior. Finite element analyses were performed on mathematical models of varying radius and boundary conditions. A review of the results of these analyses revealed a definite convergence of all stress measures considered as the specimen radius increased. There was, however, a significant variation in all stress measures as the specimen diameter increased from 8 to 12 inches.

Measure dangerously high concentrations (20 to 500 g/m3) of flammable, airborne dust. Approach Development of high concentration dust monitor (HCDM) which will measure mass concentrations of air borne dust by the principle of beta-ray attenuation. How It Works The HCDM is a battery powered, portable instrument that weighs 10.5 kg. It is capable of making continual (10 sec. time resolution) measurements of high concentrations of airborne dust and can record up to 8 hours of data in an internal memory. The data can be read out later on an analog or digital recorder. An internal pump pulls airborne dust into the sampling section, which contains a low-energy beta-ray source and a Geiger counter detector. No beta radiation escapes from the instrument, and no license is required for the operator. The mass concentration measurement is made while the dust is still airborne. Beta-ray attentuation is independent of particle size and composition of the dust, so the HCDM can he used with many types of dusts which may be airborne in flammable concentrations. Develop a method for recovering phosphate from a wide variety of complex western phosphate materials, including low-grade ores, tailings, and unused fines. Approach A flotation technique is used for this broad type of extraction. The method includes depression of phosphate minerals and anionic flotation of carbonate minerals, followed by cationic flotation of silicate minerals. How It Works A slurry is prepared for flotation by sizing to remove a low-grade, high-impurity slime fraction. Depending on the material, further sizing and/or grinding steps may be used to produce a size concentrate or to remove gangue. The flotation feed is conditioned with H2SiF6 and a fatty acid emulsion. The H2SiF6 is absorbed chemically to the phosphate mineral surface, making it strongly attracted to water and preventing adsorption of the fatty acid. Under these conditions, the fatty acid is a selective collector for carbonate minerals, which are removed as a froth product. Next, the silicates are floated with an amine reagent added directly to the slurry without additional pulp preparation.

Develop new technology to encourage domestic processing of automobile catalytic converters for recovering platinum -group metals. Background Automobile catalytic converters are used to convert pollutants in automobile exhaust into water vapor, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen, About 1 million troy ounces of platinum-group metals arc used each year in the. United Slates to manufacture catalytic converters. It has been estimated that about 60 pct of the used catalytic converters arc being collected. Most of these used catalytic converters were not processed in the United States but were exported to Japan or Europe for processing. In 1991, about 250,000 troy ounces of platinum-group metals were recovered from scrap catalytic converters collected in the United States. Each short ton of decanned catalyst may contain 30 troy ounces of platinum-group metals valued at over $15,000. Development of an economic process for the recovery of platinum-group metals that can be operated on a small or large scale may increase, the percentage of catalytic converters collected and encourage domestic processing to recover a platinum-group metal concentrate. This would significantly decrease the dependence of the United States on imports for these critical and strategic metals.
