Turkish iron and steel sector, the base of which was established in the 1930?s, plays an important role in the industrialization and development of the country?s economy. In Türkiye this sector is the major consumer of ferroalloys. There had been a great improvement in Turkish Iron and Steel industry, especially after the 1980?sand as a result, 20.9 million tons of yearly crude steel production placed Türkiye 11th in the global steel output and 3rd in Europe. 15 % of steel produced in Türkiye is flat products, while the long products make the rest. The product composition and the general characteristics of steel production process led to an increase in ferroalloy consumption. Domestically consumed ferroalloys are especially ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon. As of today, ferroalloy production capacity of Türkiye is 173,800 tons/year; 161,500 tons of which is ferrochrome with high and low carbon grades, 7,300 tons of ferrosilicochrome and the rest is ferrosilicon (5,000 tons/year). Türkiye is one of leading ferrochrome producers in the world considering the above mentioned production figures. However, this production is mainly exported since Türkiye?s stainless steel production level is modest requiring low amounts of ferrochrome. The products of iron and steel industry in Türkiye require large quantities of other ferroalloys, which make Türkiye a major importer and exporter of ferroalloys. The aim of this work is to present production, consumption, import and export quantities of: ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, ferrotitanium and ferrovanadium of Türkiye, between 1990 and 2006.

The paper presents problems resulting from the mobile mining machines functioning and requirements concerning a machine control system, which controls successive operation stages of such machines. The problem is presenting on the example of a mobile hydraulic support to remove residual pillars in copper ore mines. The paper describes an algorithm and a flow chart to be followed when designing a supports control system. Design of control systems to ensure machine function under given circumstances is also presented.

This study analyses the results of a pilot trial of a newly developed armed-chained stone-cutting machine. The machine was developed in Turkey and trialed at the Kaklik/Kocaba travertine quarries in the Denizli District. An armed-chained cutting machine is an alternative to the diamond wire cutting method more frequently used in the production of natural stone quarry blocks, and increases production efficiency and quality. Since there is no need to collapse the blocks using the armed-chained cutting production process, there is no risk of the block developing cracks. This results in a considerable increase in the efficiency of natural stone block production. The armed-chained cutting machine is easier both to assemble and run when compared to other block cutting methods. This process resulted in the production of a larger number of blocks at a lower cost within the same time frame, particularly in travertine quarries and in all other natural stone quarries. The block efficiency in travertine quarries was calculated as 65?80%using the armed-chained cutting machine, compared with 7?14% using the normal diamond wire cutting method.

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

The Akanvaara intrusion (surface area 50-55 km2) in Savukoski, Northern Finland, hosts 23 distinct monocumulate layers of small euhedral chromite crystals enclosed in a silicate matrix. These chromitite layers have been divided into four groups; UC (upper chromitite), ULC (uppermost lower chromitite) LC (lower chromitite) and LLC (lowermost lower chromitite). The driving force for investigating the Akanvaara chromites and their reduction behaviour originated from their very low MgO content and relatively low Al2O3 content, giving them a unique quality which based on thermodynamics should facilitate the reduction. Another interesting feature is the high amount of V2O3 present especially in the upper chromitite. The chromites included in this study are from the UC and ULC layers (24.9 and 22.7 per cent Cr2O3 respectively). To obtain a better understanding of the reduction behaviour of Akanvaara samples in comparison to MgO-bearing chromitites, Kemi chromite from the ferrochrome works in Tornio, Finland, was included in the study as a reference sample. The reduction experiments were isothermal in a temperature range of 1000-1400°C in CO atmosphere. Experiments were also conducted with coke addition in pellets and briquettes in CO/Ar/H2 atmospheres. The results of the reduction experiments complemented with microanalytical research indicate that the Akanvaara chromites do reduce to a higher degree than the Kemi chromite. Although the aim was to characterize the mechanisms of reduction focusing on gas-solid reactions, the nature and amount of the gangue minerals was such that a considerable amount of slag phase was formed, which affected the reduction mechanisms extensively. The structural features together with low MgO and high FeO content in both Akanvaara chromites are important factors resulting in better reducibility than in the Kemi chromite.

3D seismic surveys have become a well-accepted method of imaging sub-surface geology in the Bushveld Basin. Because both the seismic sources and receivers are placed at surface, most surveys are limited to imaging faults with >=7 m throw. However, some areas such as shaft infrastructure can benefit from the ability to detect smaller structures prior to shaft sinking. Borehole radar and logs such as the acoustic televiewer can identify these structures in the shaft barrel, but not within -200 m from the shaft. Therefore, Anglo Platinum has developed the method of high-resolution 3D vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) for structural sterilization of shaft sites prior to shaft sinking. VSPs utilize a surface source and sub-surface receivers deployed down a borehole. This means that seismic energy goes through the near surface only once, and therefore suffers less frequency loss than when both source and receivers are on surface. Furthermore, VSPs can record 3 component (3C) data which comprises P wave, Sh (horizontal) and Sv (vertical) wavemodes. Because S waves travel at about 0.6 of the velocity of a P wave, shorter wavelengths and therefore higher resolutions are possible using S wave data. VSPs were first used in their one dimensional, zero offset, mode to correlate borehole geology with seismic stratigraphy within seismic surveys. This showed that VSPs record -30% higher frequencies than surface seismic surveys. The program then applied two dimensional VSPs to the problem of imaging geological structure close to a borehole. 2D VSPs confirmed that high frequency results could be achieved, and that this enabled a more accurate image of the Merensky Reef than could be achieved by surface seismic data. Finally, the program has achieved the successful recording and processing of 3D VSP data, with both compressional and shear wavemodes giving a high resolution structural result. Although P wave data gives -30% frequency improvement over surface seismic surveys, S wave data can give as much as 80% improvement, further improving the structural image achieved. The high fixed costs of VSP surveys mean that they should ideally be run in multi-client batches, which can reduce the per borehole cost by up to 50%. Their application is anticipated to be on high value capital infrastructure with a geological risk from faults which are not imaged by surface seismics-generally in the sub-7 m range. ABSTRACT: An evaluation of the importance of the thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings (THM) on the performance assessment of a deep underground storage design has been made as part of the international DECOVALEX III project. It is a numerical study that simulates a generic repository configuration in the near field in a granite medium. The thermo-hydro-mechanical evolution of the whole configuration is simulated over a period of 100 years. The model used to represent the unsaturated behaviour of the various porous media makes allowance for moisture transfers through the effect of thermal and water gradients. The paper presents a comparison of the temperature, water pressure and stress fields obtained by TM, TH, HM and THM coupled calculations. The results demonstrate that temperature is hardly affected by the couplings. In contrast the influence of the couplings on the mechanical stresses is considerable. This is attributed to the key role that water has on bentonite swelling or shrinkage effects that are dependent on its saturation level variations. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Im Rahmen des internationalen Projekts DECOVALEX III wurde untersucht, wie groß der Einfluss thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischer Kopplungen (THM) auf die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Konzeptes zur Lagerung hoch radioaktiver Abfälle zu bewerten ist. Bei dieser numerischen Behandlung wird eine generelle Lagerungskonfiguration in granitartigem Milieu simuliert. Die thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischen Prozesse werden für eine Dauer von 100 Jahren simuliert. Bei dem Modell, mit dem das Verhalten der verschiedenen, unterschiedlich porösen Milieus in ungesättigtem Zustand dargestellt werden soll, werden die Feuchtigkeitstransporte infolge thermischer und hydraulischer Vorgänge berücksichtigt. Verglichen werden in diesem Artikel verschiedene Temperatur-, Wasserdruck- und Beanspruchungsfelder, die sich aus TM-, TH-, HM- und THM gekoppelten Berechnungen ergaben. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass die Temperatur nur gering von den Kopplungen berührt wird. Die Einflüsse der Kopplungen auf die Mechanik sind hingegen bedeutend; ausschlaggebend dafür ist der Faktor Wasser, der den Bentonit je nach Sättigungsgrad quellen oder trocknen lässt. RESUME : Dans le cadre du projet international DECOVALEX III, une évaluation de l’importance des couplages thermo-hydro-mécaniques (THM) sur les performances d’un concept de stockage de déchets fortement radioactifs a été menée. Il s’agit d’une étude numérique simulant une configuration générique de stockage en champ proche dans un milieu granitique. L’évolution thermo-hydro-mécanique de l’ensemble est simulée sur une période de 100 ans. Le modèle utilisé pour représenter le comportement non saturé des différents milieux poreux prend en compte les transferts d’humidité sous l’effet de gradients thermiques et hydriques. L'article présente une comparaison des champs de température, de pression d’eau et de contraintes obtenues par des calculs couplés TM, TH, HM et THM. Les résultats montrent que la température est peu affectée par les couplages. En revanche, l’incidence des couplages sur la mécanique est importante; ce qui est attribué au rôle majeur joué par l’eau à travers les effets de gonflement ou de retrait de la bentonite selon la variation de son degré de saturation. The Q-coda method for estimating the quality factor Q(f)= Qo(f)n was used to characterize seismic wave attenuation in a region of the Kaapvaal Craton that includes the mining areas of the Bushveld Complex and Witwatersrand Basin. Seismic waveform data, collected by locally distant stations of the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), consisted of mining-related events with magnitudes ranging from ML 1.8 to ML 4. Q was calculated for nine different source-receiver pairs spanning the study region. A weighted average Q based on the number of available data gave an estimated attenuation relation for the study region of Q(f) = 327 f 0.81.

In mining the method of statistical tests is used by solving of problems, exposing to influence of random factors. Such problems are: rational selection of equipment set; co-ordination in time of different processes; interaction between some processes and kinds of works. Usually it is considered that Monte Carlo method proves its value in the first place in that problems, which allow theoretical-probabilistic description. Analysis of numerical solution of mining-economic problems shows that the method of statistical tests may be used successfully by solving of determinate problems, which are solved usually analytically or by the methods of mathematical programming. We are talking about the problems of optimal use of resources, expedient placing of equipment, effective use of investments, rational planning of stripping and extracting works, groups of mining enterprises and about different variants of transport problem. In the report possibility of the method use is studied at an example of typical technical-economic problems solving. By solving of these problems the variant of the method with uniform distribution of random quantity had been applied and built-in random number generator of visual modelling system VisSim had been used. By algorithms elaboration it seems very perspective to use combination of the Monte Carlo method with traditional methods of numerical solving of the problems (methods of linear, nonlinear and dynamic programming and so on). High-pressure waterjet technology is proposed as an alternative tool for selective underground mining of high-grade ore sections in stratiform orebodies showing a preferred ?bottom? or ?top? enrichment such as the Witwatersrand reefs and the Bushveld Complex platiniferous reefs. This technique, utilizing known mining technology together with more advanced machinery and additives as used in industrial and cleaning applications, may lead to an increased life-of-mine (LOM) for mining operations. A series of experiments was successfully carried out in a laboratory on Witwatersrand quartzite material, indicating acceptable cutting performance. Mining volumes by selectively cutting of reef portions are considered to be comparable to traditional drilling and blasting. Economic advantages of waterjet mining include energy savings due to the lower quantity of gangue rock to be hoisted to surface, as well as savings by a decrease in the usage of blasting materials. Capital expenditure of waterjet cutting, if applied on a broad scale, could be lower in the long term than that of conventional drilling and blasting methods. Mining by the application of high-pressure waterjet technology could become a competitive ?green technology? improving the economics and safety of labour-intensive mining operations. This paper suggests that waterjet cutting at an industrial scale can become a routine hard-rock mining technique in the future. A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control, and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

A numerical approach for modeling coupled Hydro-Mechanical fracture behavior in 2D is presented in this paper. This approach accounts for the strong dependence of the flow characteristics on fracture apertures and offers an anisotropic description of the flow propagation in the fracture. An interface finite element and a constitutive model are developed . In order to validate the applicability of the model to general geomechanic problems, 2D simulations were performed. Results show the good application of the mathematical model and the fundamental hydraulic role played by the fractures. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Stoffgesetz vorgeschlagen um hydromechanisches Kluftverhalten numerisch zu Modellieren. Dieser Vorgang nimmt die starke Abhängigkeit der Fliesseigenschaften von der Kluftöffnung mit in Anbetracht. Ein Interfaceelement und ein Stoffgesetz wurden entwickelt. Zum validieren der Anwendbarkeit dieses Modells wurden 2D Simulationen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse haben gezeigt dass das mathematische Model anwendbar ist und dass Klüfte eine fundamentale hydraulische Rolle spielen. Une approche numérique pour la modélisation du comportement couplé hydro-mécanique des fractures en 2D est présentée dans ce papier. Cette approche prend en compte la forte dépendance des caractéristiques du flux de fluide sur les ouvertures des fractures et présente une description anisotrope de la propagation du flux dans la fracture. Un élément fini d'interface et un modèle constitutif sont développés. Dans le but de valider l'applicabilité du modèle à des problèmes généraux de géomécanique, des simulations 2D ont été réalisées. Les résultats montrent la bonne application du modèle mathématique et le rôle hydraulique fondamental joué par les fractures.

"In July of 2016 and June 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA submerged arc furnaces producing ferrochromium in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Subsequent thermodynamic calculations allowed for the quantification of the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag or alloy contributing to wear in the tap-hole area. Results from both wear profiling and thermodynamic calculations are reported here. IntroductionFerrochrome (FeCr) is an essential alloy in the production of stainless steel (Gasik, 2013). In 2017, 11.7 Mt of FeCr was produced (Pariser et al., 2018.). The main producers were China (39%), South Africa (29%), Kazakstan (12%), and India (8%).A number of grades of FeCr are available to producers of stainless steel, including high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr) (Gasik, 2013). HCFeCr typically contains 60–70% Cr and 4–6% C (Basson and Daavittila, 2013). When the chromium content is lower (50–55% Cr) and the carbon content higher (6–8% C), it is referred to as charge chrome. Charge chrome is typically produced in South Africa due to the grades of ore available.FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and in open arc furnaces (Mc Dougall, 2013) by carbothermic reduction of oxide raw materials. In a SAF the electrode tips are submerged in a porous charge mix. In FeCr production, the electrical energy is mainly liberated by resistive heating of the wet coke bed (Barker et al., 2007; Steenkamp et al., 2017). Thermally conductive lining design philosophies are typically applied in SAFs producing FeCr (Steenkamp, Denton, and Hayman, 2017; Coetzee, Duncanson, and Sylven, 2010; Coetzee et al., 2010).In July of 2016 and June of 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA SAFs producing FeCr in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Both SAFs were operated on the same site, by two different operating crews, using the same raw materials. The major difference between them was that the SAF excavated in 2016 was an open SAF (referred to as Furnace A) and the one excavated in 2017 was a closed SAF (referred to as Furnace B). In an open SAF, a gap exists between the top of the steel shell and the roof, with the top of the burden being open to the atmosphere and the CO-rich off-gas being combusted as it escapes. In a closed SAF, the roof is attached to the steel shell and the CO-rich off-gas is collected from an offtake on the roof for further treatment and used in downstream processes.The paper presented here reports the macro-scale observations on refractory wear for the two SAFs, and studies the potential for chemical wear of refractory by slag and alloy as a potential contributing factor to the tap-hole wear observed."

Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

A variety of carbonaceous reducing materials are being used for the production of ferroalloys. Reductant materials include not just carbons such as coke, coal, char but also bio-carbons in form of charcoal produced from different types of wood. This paper discusses critical properties and reactions of carbonaceous materials and their significance in dictating reductant performance. Main considerations include among others, gasification of reductant, dissolution of carbon into molten metal, and direct reduction of slag by solid carbon. These are discussed in relation to material properties such as structural order, mineral matter content, composition, physical characteristics etc. A brief review of both conventional and novel approaches towards characterisation of carbonaceous materials has been included. Due to complexity and heterogeneity of carbonaceous reducing materials and a wide range of process requirements, the selection of the most appropriate reducing agent will depend on a number of considerations such as the availability of raw material and associated costs, product and process requirements and environmental aspects of waste gas emissions.

This paper presents an overview of work conducted over several years to investigate the continuous stope closure profiles recorded in tabular excavations and the use of this data as a hazard indicator. In spite of the brittle nature of the rock, measurements in gold mines and intermediate depth platinum mines revealed a significant time-dependent closure component. Various approaches to simulate the time-dependent closure have been investigated. Viscoelastic theory is able to simulate the time-dependent closure behaviour, but there are subtle problems with the use of this theory as it cannot simulate the failure processes in the rock. To overcome these problems, continuum and discontinuum elasto-viscoplastic models were developed by the authors. Discontinuum models have the advantage of being able to simulate the creep behaviour of prominent discontinuities. Development of these models has led to useful insights into rock mass deformation and has made the numerical simulation of parameters, such as rate of mining, possible for the first time. A number of practical applications for the mining industry have been developed from this study. Among these are the delineation of geotechnical areas using closure data, use of the data as a hazard indicator and to give warning of large collapses in the platinum mines, identification of areas to be preconditioned in the gold mines, measurement of the effectiveness of preconditioning and improved da

Heavy metals and sulphates in acid mine drainage (AMD) can beadsorbed onto bentonite clay, leaving clean water and a heavy metal loaded clay precipitate as products. Due to the toxicity of heavy metals, the clay could not be disposed of safely in the past. A method was thus required to remove the heavy metal content from the clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the heavy metals from the loaded clay. Sulphuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid were considered as lixiviants. Loaded clay samples were leached over a range of pH values from 1 to 3.5 to identify an optimum leaching condition. From the results it was found that metals can berecovered from loaded bentonite clay by means of acid leaching and the optimum pH for heavy metal liberation was found to be 2.5, with uranium as an exception, being optimally leached at a pH of 3. This allows for the possibility of selective leaching. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that the clay structure did not deteriorate significantly during acid leaching, suggesting that the bentonite could be reused. The treatment of AMD with bentonite clay, and subsequent acid leaching of the clay, is a sustainable solution, and current outcomes could possibly lead to industrial implementation of the process during water purifying and metal recovery from waste streams. The northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coastal dune cordon, South Africa, extends from north of Durban into Mozambique. The Quaternary dune cordon, which can be up to 2 km wide, comprises a series of stacked, unconsolidated dunes that in places attain a height of over 100 m. Mining of the dunes produces much of the world’s supply of ilmenite, rutile and zircon. This paper documents the age of zircon grains separated from dune units, identifies likely source rocks and presents an evolutionary history for the dune cordon. Between 30 and 60 detrital zircon grains from three distinct units from the northern KZN coastal dunes were analysed for U/Pb isotopic ages using the SHRIMP II at the Australian National University. The samples represent units from the base (ca. 250 ka; luminescence age1),middle (ca. 190 ka2) and upper (ca. 20 ka2) portions of the coastal dune cordon. Zircon grain ages identify three source populations: (1) a 1 000 to 1 200 Ma group correlated to the Natal Metamorphic Province, (2) a 500 to 650 Ma group representing a Pan-African belt, which may correlate to the Mozambique Belt and (3) a ca. 650 to 800 Ma group of unknown provenance. Surprisingly, the presently exposed basement, comprising the Kaapvaal Craton and Archaean volcano-sedimentary sequences, has not supplied a significant amount of zircon grains (< 5%).This suggests that unroofing of basement rocks in the region has only occurred during the last 20ka. In addition, the absence of zircon grains younger than 500 Ma indicates that the bulk of zirconis not reworked from the Karoo Supergroup cover succession, but may be sourced by reworking of the Natal Group sandstones.
