The Bureau of Mines has been investigating several techniques, including the use of horizontal and vertical boreholes, to remove gas from coal in advance of mining. Horizontal boreholes drilled from underground workings as part of the mining cycle have been shown (Finfinger, 1980; Hagwood, 1983; Perry, 1978; Prosser, 1981; Thakur, 1980; VonSchonfeldt, 1982) to be very effective in providing short-term, immediate relief from high methane emissions. This technique has been widely accepted in the coal mining industry, but it does require close coordination to integrate the drilling and subsequent gas drainage and disposal into the projected mine development plan. Vertical boreholes can be placed several years in advance of mining to predrain gas from coalbeds over relatively large areas (Dunn, 1984; Elder, 1975; Lambert, 1980; Steidl, 1978; Stubbs, 1979). The vertical borehole technique has the additional advantage over horizontal boreholes of allowing work to be performed on the surface instead of in the more restrictive underground environment. However, except for the relatively large scale vertical borehole programs for both mine safety and commercial production in the Black Warrior Basin of Alabama (Dunn, 1984; Lambert, 1980; Stubbs, 1979), the technique has been underutilized. The primary reason for this seems to be a combination of the current economic climate in the coal industry, legal questions as to the ownership of coalbed gas, and potential roof damage from the stimulation treatments required to increase the characteristically low permeability of coalbeds to enhance gas production. The question of potential roof damage is the subject of this paper.

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt. The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

Microcomputer technology has begun to revolutionize petroleum engineering. Petroleum engineers' use of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC's) is likely to continue expanding rapidly. Since 1982 SPE's Microcomputer Applications Committee has developed a Society-wide users group, a bi-monthly newsletter (MICROCOMP NEWS), an SPE Short Course, a hardware and software distribution program, and a world wide electronic network (SPE NET). The purpose of this paper is to share SPE's experience in creating a dynamic program for meeting the individual member's need in the application of microcomputers to petroleum engineering. My hope is that this will encourage other engineering and scientific organizations to provide similar programs for their members.

Projections of coal reserves in Central Appalachia are essential for long-term planning in the region. Annual production is declining in some states, such as Virginia, and mineable reserves for the Central Appalachian Coalfield are challenged by difficult geological, mining, and market conditions. In order to project coal mining longevity in this region, interviews with mining companies were conducted to assist in the determination and assessment of technical and economic factors that impact coal seam mineability. This information was applied to seam and coal reserve data developed by state and federal governments. The results were carefully analyzed to determine the effects of various factors on the overall mineable coal reserve base.

The continuous mining machine is a key piece of equipment used in underground coal mining operations. Over the past several decades these machines have been involved in a number of mine worker fatalities. Proximity detection systems have been developed to avert hazards associated with operating continuous mining machines. Incorporating intelligent design into proximity detection systems allows workers greater freedom to position themselves to see visual cues or avoid other hazards such as haulage equipment or unsupported roof or ribs. However, intelligent systems must be as safe as conventional proximity detection systems. An evaluation of the 39 fatal accidents for which the Mine Safety and Health Administration has published fatality investigation reports was conducted to determine whether the accident may have been prevented by conventional or intelligent proximity. Multiple zone configurations for the intelligent systems were studied to determine how system performance might be affected by the zone configuration. Researchers found that 32 of the 39 fatalities, or 82 percent, may have been prevented by both conventional and intelligent proximity systems. These results indicate that, by properly configuring the zones of an intelligent proximity detection system, equivalent protection to a conventional system is possible.

Bright-orange couplings adorning piping systems are a common sight in just about every underground mine in North America. Grooved mechanical piping, the pipe-joining system that utilizes these couplings, is the preferred method for joining underground and plant piping systems in the mining industry, due to the ease and speed of installation and maintenance. However, the applications for such systems have traditionally excluded high-pressure systems. Most grooved mechanical couplings have a moderate working-pressure limitation, so high-pressure systems have required the use of alternative joining methods, typically heavy-duty flanges. However, the introduction of high-pressure couplings (up to 4,000 psi) has made the grooved joining method viable, and even preferable, for backfill, deep-mine chilled water and dewatering lines and other high-pressure piping applications. As engineers explore the use of high-pressure couplings, questions will undoubtedly arise about the joining method?s capabilities. This article will address the capabilities and specifications of high-pressure couplings, and compare flanged and grooved mechanical pipe joining in traditional as well as high-pressure underground mining applications.

Degussa Corporation's peroxide-assisted leaching (PAL) process was evaluated in the batch concentrate leach circuit at Hecla Mining Company's Republic Unit. The product leached in this batch circuit is a high grade gold-silver sulfide (predominately pyrite) flotation concentrate. The primary objectives of the test program were to determine the effects of dilute hydrogen peroxide addition on leaching kinetics, sodium cyanide consumption and precious metals recovery. The results of the testing demonstrated that using dilute hydrogen peroxide produced the following benefits: - 1. Batch leach time requirements decreased by 80%. - 2. Sodium cyanide consumption in concentrate leach reduced by 55%, which translated to an overall plant reduction of 20%. - 3. In the concentrate leach process, gold recovery was increased by 1 to 2%. Because of the excellent metallurgical results achieved with the use of dilute hydrogen peroxide, as well as an economic incentive, PAL has become standard practice in the concentrate leach circuit operation. A complete description of the Republic PAL plant evaluation and performance is provided in this paper. In addition, process chemistry considerations in regard to the role of hydrogen peroxide are discussed.

For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydro-logic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with ground water following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. Prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with ground water is a critical aspect of assessing such long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical ground-water flow modeling prov1des a method that can be used to predict the rate at which pits will fill with ground water.

Smart defense: that?s what the industry needs to play for the next four years, according to panelists at the 118th Annual Meeting of the Northwest Mining Association (NWMA), which met December 2-7 in Spokane, WA. The conference was well attended, with approximately 2,200 attendees, 244 booths in the two packed exhibition halls, and a rich offering of short courses, field trips, social events and technical sessions. Speakers at the packed legislative session articulated many of the frustrations felt by members of the mining community after the U.S. elections in November, and offered words of advice. Matthew Ellsworth, the new Government Affairs hire at NWMA, stated it best: ?Elections are like Christmas: you find out who?s naughty and nice ? and it?s always going to come again.?

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

The importance of geology in ore reserve estimation has been stated by several authors. King et, a1 (1982) reported that the geological factor was the key deficiency where serious weaknesses in ore reserve estimation appeared, especially in grade. The foundation for a successful mining operation is an ore reserve estimate that neither overstates nor understates the true situation as to tonnage and grade. Overestimation of reserves can have devastating economic results. Overestimation of tonnage may lead to wasting money on an overbuilt plant or worse yet, if grade is seriously overestimated also, to undertaking an operation that is doomed to economic failure from the outset. Understated ore reserves can result in building a plant that is smaller than optimum which may result in higher unit costs. At worst, understated tonnage of ore reserves can result in a missed opportunity for a profitable operation. Failure of the ore reserve estimator to properly take into account all geologic and allied factors pertaining to the deposit can result in an ore reserve estimate that is overstated either as to tonnage or grade or both. This paper will focus on these factors and will not discuss rules about distances above or below a drift that should be given a classification of proven or probable, etc. Each deposit has its own particular characteristics which often require modification of general rules for defining limits of proven and probable ore blocks that work satisfactorily in another deposit. A number of references are included which discuss some of these problems. Definitions of ore reserve classifications and an illustration are given in the Appendix.

Highly stressed excavations in hard brittle rock may fail by self-initiated, triggered or dynamically loaded strainbursts (Moss and Kaiser 2021). The low-frequency part of seismic radiation associated with strainbursts is described by a crush-type seismic source mechanism with a significant negative (implosive) isotropic component and a ‘pancake-shape’ CLVD deviatoric component. The seismic source is co-located with the excavation damage site. For such strainbursts, the ejection velocity is primarily related to the depth of strainbursting, the rock mass bulking characteristics, the duration of the bulking process, and the effectiveness of the support system. For dynamically loaded strainbursts, the displacement and energy demand may be augmented by the impact of the stress wave from a distant seismic event. This article describes the failure process and factors contributing to rock deformation and energy demands for support design. Case examples are used to demonstrate the dependence of rock displacements, rock ejection and energy demand on the factors described above. A seismic source model is proposed to assess the depth of strainbursting and the duration of the related bulking process by using seismic monitoring data. The implications for support design are briefly discussed.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. As a result of the Farmington explosion, the U. S. Bureau of Mines commissioned the National Academy of Engineering to a determine what steps could be taken in a short time frame to significantly reduce fatalities as a result of underground fire and explosion in coal mines. Three areas were named by the Academy as having the greatest potential; survival, communications, and rescue. The Bureau subsequently awarded a $3-5 million contract to the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the development of prototype equipment and procedures. These were recently tested in a simulated emergency situation and will be delivered soon. Contractor recommendations for utilization and for further development effort will be studied and appropriate action taken.

This paper is written to convey the latest developments in compact bucket wheel excavators (BWE's) operating in medium-hard rock and will serve to indicate that BWE and compact machines in particular do in fact have application in materials other than loose sandy soils and soft rock. A recently run extensive three month field test in hard marl, which was previously considered too hard and difficult to be handled by a BWE, is used as an example to explain some of the design requirements and problems associated with digging harder materials.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is a heterocyclic-mercaptan and belongs to a group of molecules containing nitrogen and sulfur as electron donor atoms. MBT has been employed as a collector in flotation under names of MBT, Captax, and Flotagen. It is a major constituent of reagents in the 400 series of the American Cyanamid Co. Current applications of the reagent include flotation of copper minerals, tarnished or oxidized lead, copper activated sphalerite, and nickel ores. It has been used successfully in the flotation of pyrite in acid circuits in the range of 4 to 5.
