Pioneering work with pilot scale autogenous grinding started in Boliden 1956. From 1961 to 1991 eleven fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuits have been installed at various concentrators within the Boliden company. A compact two-stage grinding system was de- signed in the beginning of 1970s. The system included a pebble extractor which feed the secondary grinding stage with grinding media. The APC grinding system (Autogenous/Pebble/Crusher) is a further development of the AG concept. A new design of the Boliden pebble extractor together with improved control strategy make the performance of the APC system suitable to almost any ore quality. The Boliden AG concept is probably the most cost efficient grinding system of today.

One of the primary areas of computer application in mine ventilation has been the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A variety of network analyzers that are aimed toward the solution of flows in a given network has been developed. These programs typically use the Hardy Cross or other iterative algorithm for solution of any network, even those that are complex. The computer software has become more efficient and sophisticated over time and has thus been widely adopted for ventilation network analysis. One of the shortcomings of these programs is that they have been developed with the idea of analyzing the ventilation requirements at a single point in the lifetime of a mine. This provides the ventilation engineer with an important tool for analysis but falls somewhat short of providing a convenient means to economically com- pare alternative methods for ventilating a mine. The program described in this paper provides such a tool. The principal concepts that were necessary for the completion of a computer program that analyzes ventilation alternatives is the capability of efficiently determining the ventilation requirements at a variety of times during the lifetime of the ventilation system and some method of analyzing the costs of the alternatives on a realistic comparative basis. To accomplish this task, the authors began using Penn State's mine ventilation simulator designated as PSU/MVS, Didyk et al. (1977a, 1977b) and added the necessary additional software to accommodate the need for multi-period, time-dependent analysis of the net- work. The software was then tested on a coal mine ventilation problem with a 23-year life. The problem points out the value of such a program for ventilation analysis.

In a recent issue of the Mining Congress Journal, J. L. Gilliland discussed the relationship of air quality criteria, standards, and regu¬lations (1). As he pointed out, The Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare is charged with issuing "Air Quality Criteria" which are statements concerning the concentration-effects relationship of an air pollutant. These "criteria" provide the states with a basis for their air quality "standards," which may lead in turn to emission "regulations." He further cites a list of major factors described by the National Air Pollution Control Administration, which must be considered in developing criteria. These are: properties of pollution; responses; measurement methods; exposure parameters; and characteristics of receptors. Although we briefly discuss the first two items, the principal concern of this paper is with the third item, the methods of measurements. In attempting to define responses, it has proven surprisingly difficult to establish a clear-cut cause-effect relationship between air pollutants and impairment of health. It is perhaps not too surprising that the ecological approach currently in fashion seems to be a much more powerful tool in defining cause-effects relationships. Without belaboring the point, we would like to point out that establishing such cause-effect relationships have tremendous legal and financial implications e.g., consider the possible establishment of such a relationship between pollution and inadvertent weather modification.

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. (A complete report on the project can be found in T&UC, December 2013, page 61.) Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.

Gypsum is the crystalline chemical compound CaS04?2H20. A close chemical relation - and frequently occurring with Gypsum ? is Anhydrite which is Cask. Gypsun has wide commercial use because relatively simple heat processing reduces it to Plaster of Paris. While Anhydrite can be converted to Gypsum and thence to Plaster of Paris, the procedure is not simple and is quite costly. Anhydrite, however does have use in the agricultural field and in the Portland Cement industry. Occurrence of Gypsum in the earth structure is usually near or at the surface. Most underground mining is at 60 to 100 feet although one mine in southwest Virginia reaches a depth of 1300 feet. Gypsum is one of our softest minerals, rating only 2.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Specific gravity is 2.3 to 2.4. It is soluble in water but only slightly so. Interestingly, it is more soluble in cold water than in hot. For example, one part Gypsum dissolves in 370 parts water at 106° Fahrenheit while at 212°F. the water requirement is 452 parts. Compressive strength of massive Gypsum runs about 3000 lbs. per square inch. Color ranges from grey and brownish-grey to white.

INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of useage is near 3 1/2 million units per year which is approximately 50 per cent of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry. Mr. Richard Hoppe, Senior Editor of Engineering & Mining Journal, in an article of the February, 1979, issue, entitled "Winning the Battle Against Bad Ground", said, "In hardrock mining operations in the western U.S., particularly underground uranium mines where exceedingly difficult ground is common, no roof support system has been accepted more quickly than the Split Set friction bolt invented by Dr. James J. Volumetric mass transfer coefficients and gas holdups were measured in a concentric tube airlift reactor designed for the microbial desulfurization of coal. The slurries were comprised of an acidified basal salts solution containing thirteen different weight percents of coal (74 µm Ohio #1) at three temperatures. An enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient, KLa, with respect to that measured in pure solution was found at weight percents of 5 (volume fraction solids, ES = 0.035) or less, the greatest enhancement being as great as 37% at approximately 2 weight percent (ES = J 0.014). At higher solids fractions, the mass transfer coefficient decreased with further solids additions, decreasing by as much as 91% at 40 weight percent coal (ES = 0.315). KLa increased with temperature at all solids concentrations, the greatest increase being 392% at 72°C vs that measured at 30°C. Gas holdup, EG decreased with all increases in solids loading by as much as 65% and increased by as much as 67% with temperature. KLa and EG were correlated with operating conditions separately, and the separate correlations combined to yield overall correlations for the mass transfer coefficient and for the gas holdup. The correlations are suitable for inclusion in system models devised earlier for microbial coal desulfurization processes, and may be used for design, operation and cost estimation for such systems.

INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC's stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast'' because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To com­pound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores had fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Therefore a special treatment process is needed in order to allow for the gold ore to be leached downstream in a conven­tional cyanidation process for a high gold recovery. There are several options available for this oxidation process like treat­ment of the gold bearing ore in pressure oxidation, in a biooxi­dation or in a roasting plant depending on the reason for the refractoriness. If organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the prima­ry reasons for the refractoriness, whole ore roasting is a pre­ferred method for the treatment of this type of ore. Since dry ore is to feed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill is advantageous. For the dry grinding system, the moisture content and the ore char­acteristic is of importance. Those parameters decide the mode of the grinding system. For autoclave systems common wet grind­ing systems can be applied. This paper deals with technical aspects for dry grinding plants and gives an outlook on and pos­sibilities for new grinding systems.

When the oxidized surface gold deposits are mined out, the underlying refractory gold ores become the challenge of treat­ment systems. The size and value ofrefractory gold ore reserves are a function of recovery efficiency and operating cost. The start-up of LURGI's gold roasters at NEWMONT's Carlin site has established whole ore gold roasters as a key to high gold recoveries. The ores from several deposits of the Carlin trend are roast­ed utilizing LURGI / NEWMONT technology, which has achieved gold recoveries approaching 95%. This is in dramatic contrast to the traditional perception that roasting is limited to gold recoveries in the mid 80's. Extensive investigation in pilot scale is required to achieve stable high gold recoveries for most variables in the ore body. The key question for all pilot tests is the classic question of (ROM) run of mine ore roasting or concentrate roasting. All variables are dominated by the leaching/ recovery char­acteristics of the natural ores. The degree ofrecovery improve­ment by roasting / calcining establishes the frame of the eco­nomical conditions. The full range of flexibility is required for the design of the plant to allow for ore variations in heat values, combustible con­tents, agglomeration behavior and off-gas composition. The variables in the ore body influence, therefore, the price of the plant proportionally to its flexibility. Concentrates are usually fairly stable in composition, com­bustion behavior, heat values and particle size since they are a product of the very selective flotation process. Flotation is not the successful process step when the tailings remain high in refractory gold contents.

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro NC treating crude Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade Zinc by a hydrometallurgical process, comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW), melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent a build-up of cadmium in the circuit. Silica, although not present at significant levels in the WOX feed material (approximately 0.3%), had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also impacted. The silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit in an attempt to identify the source of the silica issues. Adjustments including using PLS as feed to cementation, pH control in WOX leaching and neutralization have been introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit. INTRODUCTION Located in North Carolina, Horsehead Metal Products Inc. is a hydrometallurgical zinc refinery processing Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The flowsheet, known as the Modified Zincex® process, consists of leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment as illustrated in Figure 1. Cadmium cementation, part of the bleed treatment process, provides an essential bleed of cadmium from the circuit, as metallic cement. The Cadmium cementation circuit consists of agitated cementation reactors, a zinc dust addition system, filter presses, agitated purification (releach) reactors and a cadmium concentrate filter press Silica can be found in several forms in acid leaching. The first form is fine silicate particles. The size of the particles can vary from one to twenty microns (1). Fine silicate particles can lead to the formation of crud in solvent extraction circuits (2, 3). At Mooresboro, crud has been observed in Depletion, which is part of the solvent extraction circuit. Silica content in the solution in this section is high. The second form of silica is monosilicic acid Si(OH)4, which begins to polymerize almost immediately upon being leached into solution. Monosilicic acid polymerizes to silica gel or a silica precipitate dependent primarily on supersaturation (5). Factors that influence the rate of polymerization include temperature, sulfuric acid concentration / pH, hydrofluoric acid concentration, seeding, and dissolved salts concentration such as zinc and aluminum in the solution (4, 5, 6). In sulfate systems, silica solubility is reported in the range of 150 to 450 ppm of SiO2 (3, 5, 7)."

"With regard to the EU funded project ‘Real-Time Mining’ a sensor-based acquisition, collection and transmission of data for the resource extraction process will be developed. The key concept promotes the change in paradigm from a discontinuous to a continuous process monitoring. Especially concerning material characterization, machine performance and underground positioning ‘Real-Time Mining’ will provide sensor solutions as well as the interfaces for integration, management and visualization of the collected data for a permanent updating process of the resource model with the aim of near real-time optimization of decisions. On the basis of ‘Real-Time Mining’-Output a permanent monitoring of costs can be performed as well in both, the installation and the production process of a mine. Due to the collected data in terms of machine performance connected with the underground positioning information added with personnel tracking and mine surveys a comprehensive overview of process performance is available. By evaluating those information in a specific manner costs per unit will arise for monitoring and possibly controlling actions. INTRODUCTION By having a look into the future of mineral extraction projects, a new challenge for the Ore Mining Industry will arise in the short and medium term. Due to the depletion of currently mined mineral reserves in addition to the persistently high demand of mineral raw materials, the extraction of complex reserves will be necessary. By characterizing such deposits as not constantly graded and geometrically varying, the extraction process, especially concerning the requirement of a minimized zero-value material handling, will become economically ineffective by utilizing the traditional mineral resource management methods. Regarding the state-of-the-art mineral resource management process along the mining value chain, an intermitted, discontinuous sequence of actions is applied (Figure 1). Recently data will be collected from drill hole cores. These rock samples are analyzed in a laboratory. Based on those analyses a resource model is created whereby unknown data between drill holes is interpolated. This resource model is the basis for all mine planning actions including the selection of the mining method, extraction sequencing and the prediction of the expected performance. With the start of the production, real conditions (concentrations of elements, hardness, stability, etc.) can be observed and measured. As the production process is running accordingly to the above described mine plan, the verification of the initial assumptions happens at the earliest after processing of the extracted material. Even if deviations between the predicted and the actual performance are now recognized, the execution of corrective actions is not possible anymore."

The Woodsmith Project is located in north-eastern England within the North York Moors National Park. The strata contains the world’s largest known high-grade Polyhalite resource of around 2.66 billion tonnes. The Project was initiated by York Potash Limited (YPL), a subsidiary of Sirius Minerals plc., but in March 2020, a takeover was completed by Anglo American, one of the largest mining companies in the world. Polyhalite is an evaporite mineral and contains essential nutrients required for plant growth. The Polyhalite will be extracted via two deep mine shafts and transported underground from the mine site to a Materials Handling Facility on a Mineral Transport System (MTS), which comprises a high-capacity conveyor belt system located within a 4.9 m ID tunnel. In 2018, STRABAG were awarded with the design and construction of the MTS tunnel and associated infrastructure, including the high-capacity conveyor system. The scope of work consists of 300 m of open cut, 100 m SCL tunnel, 36.5 km TBM drive (originally anticipated as three separate TBM drives) along with a network of underground caverns at the Woodsmith Mine. The construction of two 380 m deep intermediate access shafts was later awarded as Amendments to the Contract. The tunnel is constructed using a Herrenknecht Single Shield TBM. As a result of how the various elements of the project have developed over time, the first TBM drive has been extended to ~29 km making it the worlds longest single heading TBM Tunnel when complete. The option of completing the entire tunnel length with a single heading TBM drive is currently being assessed by Anglo American and STRABAG. This unprecedented tunnel length requires two intermediate shafts to provide essential access and services, the first intermediate shaft is at Lockwood beck (LWB) and the second is at Ladycross (LDX). The LWB shaft has been constructed utilising the innovative Blind Boring technique never used before in the UK. This paper will explain the methodology and technical risk management associated with this technique. The authors believe that the collaborative approach between all contract partners is and continues to be the important contributor for the success of this project.

"This paper deals with an innovative mechanized method to bore and simultaneously line circular shafts, adopted in the Naples Metro project for the installation of 10 vertical shafts for ventilation purposes. With this method, excavation of shafts is carried out under a positive head of stabilizing fluid by a milling machine, temporarily set at the bottom of a permanent lining made of precast reinforced concrete segment rings. The debris is evacuated by inverse fluid circulation. The shafts in Naples are 4.5 m I.D., from 34 to 44 m deep and they are all located downtown in a highly urbanized area. They were bored and installed into volcanic soils under a hydrostatic head of up to 30 m. Displacements and groundwater level were constantly monitored to keep control of the effects on the surrounding buildings and utilities. INTRODUCTIONThe extension of Metro Line 1 in Naples (Italy) from the previous terminal of Piazza Dante to Piazza Garibaldi is also called the “low stretch”. Most of it runs along the coastline, encompassing the historical city center, the Greek-Roman Neapolis. The Metro Line crosses under densely urbanized areas for the whole way (Figure 1). It runs beneath Via Toledo, which follows the layout of the ancient Aragonese walls. The first station (Toledo) is located halfway along this street. Then, after a wide bend, the line reaches Piazza Municipio, where the second station is located. From there, the line moves along the axis of Via Depretis and Corso Umberto I, where the stations Università and Duomo are situated. The fifth station is in Piazza Garibaldi and the end of the stretch is located at the Naples Business Center. The twin single track tunnels were bored into volcanic tuff by TBM. This design choice simplified by far the construction of the tunnels and reduced to practically zero the interactions between tunnelling and surface buildings and utilities. Nevertheless, this choice entailed that the line had to be located at depths to the order of 35-45m below ground level and 30-35m below the water table. At each tunnel segment between stations, a pair of ventilation chambers were constructed (10 in total). Each ventilation chamber is connected to one TBM tunnel by a vertical shaft and a horizontal drift at the base of the shaft. The shafts, in addition to tunnel ventilation, provide a safety access/escape."

At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. Because jackleg rock drills are a potential source of hand vibration exposure, they can effectively produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This will affect operator efficiency and mine productivity. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles using new materials to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. In previous work developed by the authors (1991), a detailed study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicated that, for an elastomer-based handle design, the overall acceleration level experienced by the hand can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It was also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz. This paper presents an investigation of the long-term effectiveness of an elastomer-cushioned handle under different conditions underground. In this study, sponsored by the Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada (MIROC), a number of cushioned handles were quantitatively and qualitatively tested in five operating mines. The vibration testing program has indicated that the cushioned handle can reduce overall vibration levels by as much as a factor of three. The qualitative assessment program of the cushioned handles by the drill operators has indicated some degree of preference for the cushioned handles over the steel handles, if certain design modifications are performed. This research program indicated that cushioned handles have the potential to become the dominant method with regard to vibration reduction and operator performance.

In this work, a sample (of about 100kg) of an ore considered as smectitic, not yet industrialized, from Lages-SC-Brazil, was tested for evaluation of its industrial applications. First, we characterize them by XRD, DTA, FRX, and CEC analysis. After this, the smectitic clay was changed to sodium form by treatment with sodium carbonate. Then, the homoionic sodium clay was tested for iron ore pelletizing agent, as binder of foundry sands, and drilling mud with good results.

The sodium smectitic clays (bentonites), have more industrial applications in that class of mineral, a driving force to obtain this mineral. In Brazil, there are several occurrences of smectitic clays, unfortunately they are polycationic, with a distribution of several exchangeable cations, where the cation sodium occurs in minor quantity. In this work, the original polycationic smectitic clay was firstly proper characterized and then treated with sodium carbonate obtaining homoionic sodium smectitic clay. The rheological tests in the optimized sodium smectitic clay showed good results for drilling fluids, typical of a sodium bentonite ones.
