A combination field and office study of mining districts in Southwestern U.S.A., conducted in 1949 - 1950 by United Geophysical Company, embraced all of the essentials for a successful exploration project including factors such as geology water, transportation and many more. Perhaps the best known of several high priority areas chosen from the study was the Twin Buttes or Pima District in Arizona, however, the Turquoise District also ranked very high on this priority schedule. Following the discovery of the Pima Mine in 1951 and 1952, United initiated additional preliminary geological, geophysical, drilling and claim location work in the Turquoise District, but stopped shortly thereafter, when ASARCO began adjoining competetive activity. During the summer of 1957, sometime after ASARCO abandoned their claims in the area, Minerals Exploration Company began intensive exploration in the Courtland-Gleeson part of the District. This program was terminated in 1958. Later Bear Creek Mining Company supplemented the discovery endeavor with their own program during the period 1960 through 1962. This paper summarizes most of the geophysical work done by all of the groups except ASARCO and is intended to complement the recent paper "General Geology and Some Structural Features of the Courtland-Gleeson Area, Cochise County, Arizona" by Mr. Otis McRae of Bear Creek Mining Company.

The mining industry is a major consumer of rock anchors in the United States. Due to the high humidity in the underground coal-mining environment, the rock anchors corrode and lose their load bearing capacity, which, in turn, reduces the life expectancy of the ground support. This creates operational difficulties and a number of safety concerns (Li and Linblad, 1999). Research on rock anchor corrosion has not been adequate in the past and the effects of several factors in the mine atmosphere and waters are not clearly understood. One of the probable reasons for this lack of research may be attributed to the time required for gathering meaningful data. Underground water samples from different mines in the Illinois coal basin were collected and the major chemical content was analyzed and used for laboratory testing. The corrosion performance of the different commercial rock anchors was investigated by techniques such as laboratory immersion tests in five different corrosion chambers and potentiodynamic polarization tests in simulated ground waters based on the Illinois coal basin. The tensile strengths were measured for the selected rock anchors taken every three months from the salt spray corrosion chambers maintained at different pH values and temperatures. The corrosion potential, corrosion current and the corresponding corrosion rates of the #5, #6, #6 epoxy-coated and #7 forged-head rebar steels, #6 and #7 threaded-head rebar steels were measured in the pHs of 5 and 8 at room temperature. The open circuit potential (OCP) readings of the different rock anchors were recorded in three selected underground coal mines (A, B & C) in the Illinois coal basin and the data compared with the laboratory electrochemical tests for analyzing the life of the rock anchors installed in the mines with respect to corrosion current measured.

Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. The mineral processing engineer must have some knowledge of mineral identification, and the greater his knowledge in this field, the greater will be his potential to do his own specialty well. Most metal-bearing ores and industrial minerals require processing of some kind to produce a salable product or a material suitable for further processing. The types of treatment are many, but each one is aimed at separating a mineral or family of minerals from others. Obviously, then, it is basic to all mineral processing to identify the minerals present in the raw material and in intermediate and final products resulting from processing. Very often the mineral processing engineer will enter planning while exploration of a mineral prospect is going on. He will examine hand specimens, drill cores and cuttings, bulk samples, and materials in place. He must identify the valuable minerals, their occurrence and associations with other minerals, and the identity of diluents or host rock. An exact and detailed knowledge of the raw material will usually suggest the treatment processes that should be investigated in the development of the most suitable scheme for that particular raw material in that particular location. Physical properties of a mineral often lead directly to a process for separating that mineral from others. Some well-known examples of these are: magnetic separations for such minerals as magnetite, rutile, ilmenite; gravity separations for gold, silver, galena. cassiterite; flotation separation for most sulfides; distillation of mercury from cinnabar; and selective dissolution in specific solvents such as halite or sylvite in water, gold and silver in cyanide solutions, copper oxides, carbonates, sulfates and silicates in dilute sulfuric acid. These processes and many others are described in detail elsewhere in the Hand¬book and so it is not appropriate to give details here, except to emphasize that processing is aided greatly by complete mineral identi¬fication. Developing a treatment scheme for a new mineral discovery is an exciting assignment fag the mineral processing engineer, but much more of the usual work relates to quality control in existing plants. Here too, mineral identification is important. Some processing is aimed toward producing an end product which will meet exacting specifica¬tions regarding purity or allowable diluents. INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines (The Bureau) remote sensing researchers at the Denver (CO) Research Center, have been investigating computerized methods to detect and map surface linear features called "lineaments" for ground hazard assessment in mines. Many of these lineaments at the test mine site were found to correlate to subsurface geologic discontinuities such as faults, fractures, and joints that intersect coal seams at depth. These features adverse1 y affect the roof and rib integrity in underground mines, thus contributing to rock failures that may result in injuries to mine workers and loss of production. Advance knowledge of the existence of such hazardous geologic features can aid in mine planning and development. Lineaments may be observed in a variety of images of the earth's surface. Linear features that can be observed using Landsat mu1ti spectral scanner data (MSS) images range from regional (greater than 3 miles in length) to an intermediate length of from 1 to 3 miles. These images are recorded in discrete radiation bands in the green, red, and near-infrared portions of the el ectromaynetic spectrum. These data are acquired from the EROS Data Center of the U.S Geological Survey, Sioux Falls, SD, in digital format on magnetic tapes that are suitable for processing on certain minicomputers. Shorter lineaments length (less than 1 mile) can be observed in high- to low-a1titude aerial photography, radar, and infrared images with image scale ratios of 1:1,000,000 or less. These linear features can correlate to smaller dimensioned faults, and to fracture and joint sets at the local geologic scale. Other informational sources can help substantiate 1ineament analyses, such as well logs, mine naps, topographic data, and geophysical data acquired over the study site. Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. Newmont mine geologists have added substantial economic value developing over 1,150 tonnes into quality surface and underground gold reserves since 1986. However, the recent 5-year gold price slump from $387 to $262 per ounce has shifted mine geologists focus to optimizing open pit profitability and developing high-grade, high cash flow and low capital development underground reserves. More than $65 million projected revenue has been added to the Gold Quarry south layback following multi-departmental model reconciliation investigations. Kriged mine polygon construction, controlled blast heave and high-quality geologic advice in selective mining will have multi-million dollar beneficial impacts.

Of the six forms of asbestos, only three have been used to any significant extent in commerce. These are chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite. Between 1870 and 1980, approximately 100 million tonnes of asbestos was mined worldwide, of which more than 90 million tonnes was the chrysotile variety, about 2.7 million tonnes the crocidolite variety, and about 2.2 million tonnes the amosite variety. The three principal diseases related to asbestos exposure are (1) lung cancer, (2) cancer of the pleural and peritoneal membranes (mesothelioma), and (3) asbestosis, a condition in which the lung tissue becomes fibrous and thus loses its ability to function. These diseases, however, are not equally prevalent in the various groups of asbestos workers that have been studied: the amount and type of disease depend on the duration of exposure, the intensity of exposure, and particularly, the type or types of asbestos to which the individual has been exposed. Lung cancer is caused by exposure to chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos; however, increased risk of this disease is usually found only in those who also smoke. Asbestosis is caused by prolonged exposure to all forms of asbestos, whereas mesothelioma is principally caused by exposure to crocidolite asbestos. There is good evidence that chrysotile asbestos does not cause any significant amount of mesothelioma mortality, even after very heavy exposure. The common nonasbestiform amphibole minerals, cummingtonite, grunerite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite, which are often defined as "asbestos" for regulatory purposes, have not been shown to cause disease in miners. Chrysotile asbestos, which accounts for about 95 percent of the asbestos used in the United States, has been shown by extensive Canadian studies to be safe when exposures do not exceed 1 fiber per cm3 for the working lifetime. Chrysotile dust levels found in buildings rarely exceed 0.001 fibers per cm3. Such dust concentrations will have no measurable health effect on the building occupants. Present and future controls of minerals defined as "asbestos" and removal of asbestos from buildings and homes may cost many billions of dollars. Much of this expense is unnecessary and even counterproductive. Asbestos abatement could in fact produce a health risk to those exposed to dusts during and after removal operations overly restrictive controls could force the use of poor or dangerous substitutes, and could greatly affect the hard-rock mining industry.

BRUCE CAVENDER, BHP Copper: Having worked in both places, I'd like to address the issue of the plant versus the corporate office. One thing to keep in mind is that we are all very engaged with the technical elegance of a lot of the work we do. There's some tremendous technical expertise in the plant. But remember, the guys in the corporate office are only thinking in one denomination, and that's dollars. So we'll see something like a spill, and for us it's a problem. At the end of the day, what the corporation cares about is the financial impact. So we've got to be careful to couch our solutions in dollar terms. JIM ARNOLD: Rebuttal? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Are you going to rebut this one, Andy? ANDY CARTER, Oxidor Gold Corporation: No, I don't think so. I'm not up to it. I'd just like to address a question both to our panel and the floor. Those of us who've been in this industry any length of time have seen these same mistakes made over and over again. Wherever you go, year after year, plant after plant, you see the same problems. I guarantee you, Doug, that if we have a similar conference down the road, you're going to see the same thing. My question to the panel and to the floor is what is it about our industry that stops us from learning from our mistakes? What characteristic is it that prevents us from learning and makes us repeat the same mistakes over and over again? DOUG HALBE: That's a great question. Someone said in a meeting 10 years ago that if the people who design plants designed airplanes, the planes would be falling out of the air all the time. GARY SIMMONS, Newmont Gold Company: I've got an answer to your question as to why many plants are poorly designed. It's that the minute anybody demonstrates any sort of competence in plant design, they're promoted to a higher-paying job, and the talent pool is left with people of lesser experience. Just think about it: The people who have the experience and have demonstrated it more than once have moved up. JIM ARNOLD: I think that there's another reason, too. The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. On my arrival in New York after the Russian examinations John D. Ryan, president of Anaconda, asked me what my plans were. I told him I wanted to be useful somehow in the World War that we had entered while I was away, but I did not know how. Ryan and Thayer told me that the new American Air Corps was gathering a group of executives, most of them young, to go to France as Army officers to help with the industrial side of our aviation activities. This would include construction of military airports, maintenance, and supply for our rapidly growing Air Corps. They thought I might be accepted in this group of about 30. It seemed to be just what I wanted, and I put in my application at once. My application was accepted about three weeks later and I was told to come to Washington to take physical and other tests and to meet others of the group. I liked them. They were a cross section of competent American manufacturers, bankers, automobile executives, and merchants. I was the only miner. I had many discussions in the days in Washington with members of our organization and others I knew who were going into war service. Attitudes were very different from those 55 years later. There was no discussion as to whether war was right or wrong. We were in it and must do all we could to help. At the same time there was a holdover from the days when, at least for the elite, war was high adventure. Even the most high-minded did not then realize that war is a horrible form of wholesale murder and, in 1917, it would have been treason to suggest this. I had two weeks before our industrial group was to start work which gave me time for a hurried trip to Berkeley where Dorothy and I announced our engagement.

In coal-bearing formations, seams are often bounded by sedimentary layers of mudstone, claystone or shale. When the electrical conductivity of the surrounding sediment layers is greater than the conductivity of the seam, a natural parallel plate waveguide forms in the strata. For frequencies below the AM broadcast band, the waveguide can be used for the transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. In a uniform seam, the primary wave travels in the coal layer along paths between a radiating antenna and a distant receiving antenna. The travel distance increases with seam height and the conductivity of the surrounding sediment layers. The distance decreases with increased coal conductivity. In Cretaceous western bituminous coal, the distance may exceed 549 m (1800 ft). Anomalous geologic disturbance zones such as faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the values of EM wave propagation constants (attenuation and phase) expected in a uniform seam. In the neighborhood of an anomaly, EM wave energy is scattered (reflected and diffracted). Scattering creates secondary waves in the seam wave guide. A receiving antenna at a remote location in the coal seam can be used to measure the magnitude and phase of the EM wave at the end of the path. The measured data can be processed to determine the average value of the propagation constants along each path. Paths with anomalous propagation constants are used to locate and image geologic disturbance zones. Radio Imaging Method (RIM) instrumentation, survey procedures and data processing (tomography) algorithms have been developed to image geologic structure in advance of mining. The survey is conducted between gate roads of a longwall panel. Data processing constructs contours of constant attenuation rate (phase constant) across the plan view of the panel. In anomalous zones, the contours rapidly change with distance. The shape of the contour lines generates a visual image of the anomaly and suggests the type of anomalous condition to be expected in the coal seam. This paper briefly discusses the depositional environment and the formation of the imperfect waveguide in coal-bearing strata. The linkage between sedimentary geology and EM wave theory establishes an understanding of how the propagation constants depend on the anomalous geologic conditions. A case study compares in-mine geologic mapping with the tomographic image of a longwall panel.

Glamorous, burgeoning biotechnology and mundane industrial minerals would at first glance seem to share little in common, but in truth, modern biotechnology depends on many minerals. Biotechnical processes also can be used in industrial mineral extraction and processing. Biotechnology is broadly defined as the application of biological organisms, systems, or processes to manufacturing and service industries. Genetic engineering has reinvigorated one of mankind's oldest sciences, biotechnology, into a booming business. Many modern processes depend on microorganisms cultivated under very stringent conditions in bioreactors. Minerals from carbonate, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate families are used to provide essential nutrients and to regulate growth conditions (such as pH) in order to assure optimal growth of organisms. Certain cells or enzymes perform better when immobilized upon or within solids, and minerals are often used to immobilize cells, especially in continuous process. Minerals are also used extensively in separating and purifying products of biotechnology. Diatomite, zeolites, and silica are especially useful in purification processes. Industrial minerals also are commonly used to clean up large volumes of process water that must be treated. Biotechnology can be employed in exploration, extraction, and processing of geologic materials and in reducing mining or other environmental problems through bioremediation. Microbes have been shown to solubilize certain elements and so promote extraction of heavy metals, phosphate, aluminum, potassium, and even rare earth elements. In a related technique, unwanted materials such as pyrite impurities can be leached microbially to produce cleaner products in sand and clay industries. Microbial actions can modify surface characteristics and so enhance certain ceramic properties. Certain organisms can accumulate useful elements from dilute sources; others can transform unusable chemical species to more useful forms. Deterioration of stone, concrete, and even glass or brick, can be accelerated by microorganisms. Control of such biodeterioration could improve long-term performance of industrial mineral products. Microbial processes have shown promise in improving several mine-related problems. Certain bacteria help remove clays from phosphate slimes and other suspensions. Others are used to degrade cyanide or other organic chemicals such as floatation aids. Cells immobilized on clays have been especially efficacious in bioremediation. Biotechnology industries, like the industrial minerals industries, encompass huge ranges of materials and processes. Costs of products from these industries range from pennies to thousands of dollars per unit, and their products are vital for maintaining modern life styles. Many biotechnical processes depend upon industrial minerals and certain biological processes can be harnessed to do useful tasks in the minerals field. The interplay of industrial minerals and biotechnology is important today, and as biotechnology advances, its interaction with the industrial minerals industry can only increase.

This paper presents an overview of the New Mississippi Tunnel Outfall for the Transportation Expansion Project (T-REX). The Outfall conveys highway and other urban drainage to the South Platte River as well as provides long needed relief from flooding problems in the southeastern portion of the Interstate 25 highway corridor. The Outfall tunnel incorporates a one-pass precast concrete segmented liner to convey storm water under I-25 then under Mississippi Avenue to the river. The Outfall crosses both the existing I-25 as well as the future improvements including under the Light Rail Transit, a new bridge abutment, widened lanes, and new retaining walls. The Outfall also crosses adjacent to several buildings and five bridges, under major traffic and utility intersections, and through difficult geology.

The integration of interactive computer graphics technology with data analysis tools can assist in the evaluation of deposit models: the super- imposition of mine openings on complex geology can be quickly perceived using dynamic visualisation, colour-coding and transparency control while analysis functions assist in quantifying displayed information. To illustrate the functionality of such integration a research prototype system is presented which allows the interactive visualisation and evaluation of deposit models comprising both structural boundaries and the distribution of continuous properties.

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. A research project supported by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Iron Ore Cooperative Research Committee was undertaken to reduce the dissolution of fluoride into process water during taconite processing. Leach tests were conducted using rod mill feed samples and water containing varying concentrations of calcium and sodium. Laboratory liberation grinds were performed to evaluate fluoride rejection during grinding and magnetic separation. Tube furnace tests were conducted to evaluate fluoride volatilization during pellet induration. The results indicate that fluoride concentration of process water is a function of both calcium and sodium concentration in process water. It appears that less than 1 percent of the fluoride present in rod mill feed will dissolve in process water during grinding. More than 90 percent of the fluoride present in rod mill feed is rejected with tailings during size reduction and magnetic separation. The furnace tests demonstrate that bentonite and fluxstone (calcite and dolomite) addition to taconite concentrate during pellet production increases the amount of fluoride that volatilizes during induration. Lime hydrate addition to pellets decreases the amount of fluoride that volatilizes during pellet induration. During acid pellet production approximately three times more fluoride enters the water during induration-off-gas scrubbing than during grinding. When fluxed pellets are produced three to eight times more fluoride enters the water during off-gas scrubbing than during taconite grinding.

This chapter outlines the nature, extent, and amelioration of secondary effects of mineral development. Since regulations are subject to frequent change, the chapter emphasizes basic factual and conceptual material, rather than specific regulations. The goal is to familiarize the reader with the general nature of environmental impacts and mitigation which arise in the minerals industry, and with the issues surrounding the regulation debate. The chapter is organized as a series of sub- chapters. The first of these is a discussion of the conceptual foundations of regulatory policy. The second section summarizes the principal federal environmental statutes, and the implementation of such regulation. Following that, the third section summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the types of environmental impacts associated with mineral development. This discussion, organized in a format similar to that used in environmental impact statements, can be thought of as a guide to reading and understanding such statements. Next, the fourth section surveys studies of the costs and benefits of environmental regulation. 'These empirical studies are evaluated in terms of the framework developed in the first section of the chapter. In the fifth section, the discussion turns to federal, state, and local approaches to land use control and siting, and the economic analysis of such conflicts. Included are discussions of the two principal forms of public lands mineral entry, the 1872 location patent system and the 1920 leasing approach. CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS OF REGULATORY POLICY David A. In a market society, the private sector is presumed to be the most appropriate economic agent. Given this presumption, regulation generally begins with a demonstration of persistent problems under laissez-faire in a given context. Environmental and related regulation occurs because the public believes the free market does not properly value environ- mental quality. In this section, concepts are advanced to aid the reader in understanding the government's role in this respect.

Selection of a plant site is becoming increasingly more difficult and important, mainly due to advances in technology, antipollution laws and changing economic, social and community conditions. Discussion falls naturally under three headings: economic considerations, terrain considerations and environmental considerations. Aside from acquisition of surface rights, problems having to do with terrain, or topography, usually can be dealt with by management alone. Economic considerations largely involve decision-making by management plus negotiations with government regulatory agencies acting under set rules. Environmental considerations, such as air and water pollution, townsites, housing, schools, noise abatement, appearance, surface rehabilitation and the like usually are under the control of federal, state or municipal bodies with a large degree of decision-making. Successful solution of environmental problems often requires lengthy negotiations, during which public relations by the mining company play an important part. Existing union regulations or customs may confine decision- making and the establishment of wage rates, working conditions and regulations. These usually require considerable planning and negotiation. Initial production often is delayed by formal negotiations involving environmental considerations. Surface facilities usually can be divided into two broad categories: those for concentrating ores--such as gold, silver, base metals, low-grade iron ore and potash-which should be close to the mine to reduce ore-transportation costs to a minimum, and those where the ore is shipped elsewhere for treatment, such as direct-shipping iron ores, complex high-value ores requiring specialized treatment and ores from which special products are derived for local markets. The long-term aspects of plant-site selection too often are given no or insufficient consideration because of immediate financial limitations. As a result, additional capital expenditures may be required later for relocation of townsites, roads, railroads and plants to provide additional room for extension of open-pit operations, tailings disposal, storage, or danger to foundations through underground subsidence or open-pit mining. In the past, hillside sites for concentrating plants were preferred to take advantage of gravity-feed methods The modern trend, however, is to place as much equipment as possible on approximately the same level. Some costs relating to plant sites are included in this section. They are ranges as of the year 1970, and are offered only as general guides. Such costs will vary widely with geographical location and, of course, are subject to escalation due to increases in wage rates and cost of materials. Items in the bibliography contain more detailed and comprehensive data on specific subjects. Most contain bibliographies of their own.

The mining industry is presently one of the most heavily capitalized industries in the U.S. (U.S. - Statistical Abstracts, 1979). U.S. sales of new mining equipment (not including environmental, preparation, or long distance transportation equipment) are projected to reach approximately $5 billion/year in 1980 (Frost and Sullivan, 1979). Of these new equipment sales approximately 30 to 40 percent of this equipment will be used to replace old equipment. Therefore, an increase of efficiency in the use of equipment replacement capital could have substantially positive effects for the U.S. mining industry. This is very critical in these times of restricted capital availability, double digit inflation, burdensome governmental regulation, and rising foreign competition in the mining industry. This paper examines the numerous factors that constitute the typical mine equipment replacement problem. A computerized, mathematical model is formulated to utilize historic cost and production information to predict equipment cost versus age for the existing and potential replacement machines. Another part of this computerized model determines the best equipment replacement strategy that accomplishes estimated production goals at a minimum discounted cost. This computerized model is an easily used, consistent method of determining the optimum replacement age for any equipment unit or fleet of equipment at a mining operation.
