INTRODUCTION In 1957, diamond drilling on a magnetic anomaly indicated an extensive zone of copper mineralization on what is now the Craigmont Mines property. By mid¬1958, drilling established a copper ore body. Milling commenced in September 1961 at 4536 t/d (5000 stpd) and by the end of October 1977 the mine had produced 339 662.04 t (374,363.9 st) of copper. At present, two-thirds of the mill feed is derived from underground operations and one-third from low-grade surface stockpiles. Craigmont Mines is situated 209 km (130 air miles) northeast of Vancouver (see Fig. 1), 16 km (10 miles) west of the town of Merritt, a logging, ranching, and mining community of about 7000 people. It is serviced by paved highways, Canadian Pacific Railway, British Columbia Hydro, and Inland Natural Gas Co. Water is pumped from the Nicola River, a distance of 6 km (4 miles) and a lift of 244 m (800 ft). In March 1967, the open pit mining operations at Craigmont Mines reached their economic limit and were suspended. Before this, it had been decided that a sub¬level caving method of underground mining would be used to supply ore to the concentrator after the cessation of open pit production. This chapter describes the fac¬tors influencing the choice of mining method, some of the problems encountered, mining practices, and results. GEOLOGY The ore bodies of upper Triassic age are located in a limy horizon striking east-west, closely paralleling the intrusive Guichon batholith, bounded on the south by rhyolites and on the north by graywackes, and dipping steeply to the south (Figs. 2a, b). The ore bodies are relatively narrow with a maxi¬mum width of 79 m (260 ft), a combined strike length of 853 m (2800 ft), and a vertical extent of 610 m (2000 ft). Chalcopyrite is virtually the only copper mineral, and 20% of the ore zone consists of acid solu¬ble magnetite and hematite. The area has been subjected to considerable faulting and brecciation, which is a major factor in the mining operation. Total geological reserves, at 0.7% Cu cutoff, for the deposit were 22 316 743 t (24,600,000 st) at 1.89% Cu. An additional 5 236 270 t (5,772,000 st) at 0.6% Cu were mined from the open pit. Ground Conditions The waste rocks-graywacke, andesites, and diorite -are relatively incompetent due to the high degree of fracturing and jointing, and all require varying degrees of support. The ore zones are somewhat less fractured; ground support is still required, however, although to a lesser extent than in the country rock. Ground conditions in the main ore body are better than in the smaller, nar¬rower ore bodies. Clayey fault gouge is present in most of the faults; gouge zones may be up to 6 or 9 m (20 or 30 ft) wide. The main ground problems are associated with local weakness rather than pressure. Shape of Ore Bodies (Figs. 2a, b and 3a, b) The main No. 1 ore body is approximately 244 m (800 ft) long and 46 m (150 ft) wide. It extends ver¬tically from the original top of the open pit at 4200 ele¬vation to just below the 3060 level. The No. 2 ore body is approximately 304 m (1000 ft) long, varies from stringer width at the extremities up to 79 m (260 ft) wide, and extends from 3060 level to 2400 level. Both these ore bodies have extensions re¬sulting in additional small irregular bodies. Ore bodies are mostly steep dipping, though part of the Wing ore body, an extension of No. 2 ore body, dips at 0.87 rad (50'). This ore body varies in size, but is approximately 122 m (400 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and about 213 m (700 ft) high. No. 1 Limb ore body is a narrow extension of the No. I Main with a vertical extent of 137 m (450 ft), average width of 18 ft (60 ft), a strike length of 152 m (500 ft), and dips steeply at 1.4 rad (80°). No. 1 East is an eastern extension of the No. 1 Main with a vertical extent of 183 m (600 ft), a strike length of 91 m (300 ft), an average width of 30 m (100 ft), and dips at 1.2 to 1.4 rad (70 to 80°). No. 1 South is at the upper west end of the open pit with a vertical extent of 76 m (250 ft), a strike length

INTRODUCTION Strassa lies in the central part of Bergslagen, a tradi¬tional mining district, on the eastern side of the Stora Valley at an elevation of about 200 m above sea level. A railway siding runs between the mine and the Stora railway station from which there are railway connections to the shipping port and iron and steel works in Oxelosund, about 224 km away. The distance to the provin¬cial capital Orebro is about 60 km. The climate is typi¬cal for this part of central Sweden and is illustrated by the diagram of monthly precipitation and temperatures for the years 1968-1975 (Fig. 1). HISTORY There is no certain information as to when the Strassa mine was first worked, but it is known from sur¬viving accounts of mine inspectors that there were smelt¬ing works in operation in nearby villages in the 12th century. An example is the Gusselhytta ore smelting works, 10 km south of Strassa, which dates from this period. Around the year 1540 there were two smelting works in Strassa, the Upper Karberg and Lower Karberg works. Ore for these smelters was probably taken from Strassa and from the adjacent Blanka mine. In the year 1624 Strassa is mentioned by the painter Jons Nils Krook in an account of the iron mines in the Linde mining district (Linde Bergslags Jarngruvor). Several mines were listed in the area, the deepest being about 30 m. An impressive power installation is mentioned in 1639, including a piston system of lashed poles for transmit¬ting power from the Stora River to the Strassa fields. Its length was 2670 m. Common ground comprising about 20.2 km2 (5000 acres) of forest was allocated in 1689 for the furtherance of mining operations. Until the beginning of this century only the rich cen¬tral parts of the ore body were mined and these yielded, after handpicking, lump ore suitable for smelter feed. An example of the ore grades from these early times is an analysis of ore from the "Big Mine" (Storgruvan) from the year 1873: 48.5% Fe, 0.008% P, and 0.06% S. This same year a total of about 18 000 t was ex¬tracted from the Strassa mine. OWNERSHIP The mine was owned and run until 1874 by a min¬ing association made up of 119 so-called "bergsman," who were homesteaders often engaged in agriculture and timber-cutting as well. In that year the Strossa Grufvebolag (Mining Co.) was founded. In 1906 it was con¬verted into a joint stock company, the Strossa Gruveaktiebolag. This was acquired in 1907 by Metallurgiska AB for the implementation of Gustav Grondal's beneficiating and briquetting methods, for which the Strassa ore was well suited. The same year saw the completion of a new ore dressing plant with an annual production of 46 000 t of ore concentrate. In 1911 the mine passed to new hands, and in 1913 it was purchased by an Austrian company. Extensive new installations were made and in 1915 a new dressing and briquetting plant was completed with twice the capacity of the old one. In 1917 the Strassa mine was acquired by Granges. Be¬cause of unfavorable business trends and technical diffi¬culties, mining operations were brought to a close in 1923. Pumping kept the mine free of water until 1933 but it was completely filled ten years later. Up to 1950 the surface buildings and installations remained intact but the large dressing and briquetting plant burned to the ground in that year. Today only the machine shop re¬mains from this earlier period of operation, now housing parts of the Mineral Processing Laboratory. The decision to take up mining operations again was made in 1955 and construction work began the follow¬ing year. Of the old installation, only the "southern shaft" could be used for some development drifting after it had been completed with a new headframe. Other¬wise, all the buildings and installations required for the operations had to be rebuilt. New installations ready by 1960 were office and personnel facilities, a new shaft and headframe, a sorting and concentrating plant, a macadam plant, settling basins, pump stations, and a railway and yard with transport equipment. 4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. Successful grouting depends to a large extent on the correct design of a grout for each specific case. It is impor-

INTRODUCTION Towards the end of the 1890s the attention of a prospector by the name of Thomas Cullinan was drawn to the occurrence of alluvial diamonds east of Pretoria. Persistent prospecting work by Cullinan led to the loca¬tion of the source of these diamonds-a kimberlite pipe on the Elandsfontein farm. Cullinan eventually acquired the property in 1902, and during an extensive evaluation program outlined the largest diamondiferous pipe in South Africa on which the Premier mine was established. Worldwide attention was drawn to this mine in 1905 when the Cullinan diamond, which weighed 3106 carats and is by far the largest gem diamond ever discovered, was recovered. Premier mine operated with varying success until 1932 when the worldwide depression forced it to close. In 1945 the mine was reopened and since then has been a major producer of gem and industrial diamonds. During the early 1950s exploratory drilling revealed that below the 370-m level the pipe had been completely cut off by a younger gabbro sill. This sill has created major mining and metallurgical problems but the existence of vast reserves of high grade ore below it justi¬fied the establishment of virtually a new mine below the sill. Detailed planning of below-the-sill mining is nearing completion and the development of the first mining block (the L1 block) is well advanced. A full discus¬sion of this block follows. GEOLOGY OF PREMIER MINE Pipe Morphology and Country-Rock Geology As can be seen in Fig. 1, Premier mine is an elon¬gated oval shape with a long axis of 900 m on the surface and a short axis of 450 m. The pipe has a surface area of 32 hectares which decreases progres¬sively with increasing depth, so that 500 m below the surface the area is reduced to 22 hectares. The contact between the kimberlite and the surrounding country rock is sharp, with an average angle of dip of 1.48 rad (85°). From the surface down to approximately 350 m, the country rock is a felsite which grades downwards into a norite. In general both rock types are hard and massive, the felsite in particular being poorly jointed. This characteristic combined with other factors results in an extremely stable open pit, and near-vertical side¬walls are currently being maintained. The norite in general is competent but is heavily jointed in some areas resulting in very blocky ground which creates localized tunnel support problems. In the southeastern area below the sill a zone of highly altered and very unstable norite, which has also created localized sup¬port and development difficulties, lies adjacent to the pipe contact. Kimberlite Geology The Premier pipe is a complex multiple intrusion which contains in the region of 15 separate types of kimberlite, most of which are volumetrically insignifi¬cant. On a simplified basis three major types can be identified which correspond to three separate phases of intrusion. They are: Brown Kimberlite: This represents the first phase of intrusion and now occupies the eastern part of the pipe. In plan the brown kimberlite has a crescentric shape resulting from the intrusive relationship with the younger gray kimberlite which lies to the west. The brown kimberlite increases in relative area with increas¬ing depth which is a favorable factor for future mining operations since this kimberlite is the richest area of the mine, having an average grade of 70 carats/ 100 t. Below the sill this rock disintegrates extremely rapidly when exposed to air or water, to form a fine gravel-like material. This characteristic is due to a high montmorilonite clay content. As is common with clay minerals of this type, water can be absorbed into the crystal lattice with a resultant increase in volume which causes the physical decomposition of the rock. The presence of this decomposing kimberlite was a major factor governing the choice of a mining method, as well as development and tunnel support techniques. Gray Kimberlite: This is the most abundant type and represents the second major phase of intrusion. The diamond content is variable depending on the amount of waste rock dilution, and in general the rock is stable and non-decomposing. At the time of formation of Premier, the surface rock type was Waterberg quartzite, a rock formation which has subsequently been removed from this area by erosion. The explosive extrusion of the gray kimberlite caused extensive brecciation of this rock and while the kimberlite was in a mobile state huge masses of quartz¬ite, amounting to tens of millions of tons, slumped into the pipe. This quartzite became concentrated in the central area of the mine and has been a major mining problem throughout the history of Premier since, due to the irregular distribution of the quartzite, effective selective mining has never been possible. The quartzite is therefore extracted with the ore and has a significant dilution effect on the overall grade. Black Kimberlite: In the western part of the pipe a circular, pluglike body of kimberlite is intruded into the gray kimberlite. This plug consists mainly of a hard, dark-colored rock known as black kimberlite, but also contains a number of minor kimberlite variet.ies as well as nonkimberlite carbonate dikes. The Gabbro Sill The sill averages 75 m in thickness and within the confines of the pipe consists of 52 million t of rock. On average the major dip is 0.34 rad (20°) to the northeast which is across the short axis of the pipe, the range of dip being from near horizontal up to 0.52 rad (30°). Due to the pronounced dip, the sill is encount¬ered over a vertical distance of 175 m with the highest upper contacts on the 355-m horizon and the lowest bottom contact on the 530-m horizon.

Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies in an electric field. Separation is effected by adjusting the electric and coacting forces, such as gravity or centrifugal force, and the time forces act on the particles, such that different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Separations made in air are called electrostatic separation even though there is always some flow of current. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high tension separations. Separations made in liquids are termed separation by dielectrophesis if motion is due to polariza¬tion effects in nonuniform electric fields and termed electrophoresis if motion is due to free charge on species in an electric field. There are no industrial applications of mineral concentration by electropho¬resis or dielectrophesis; thus this section is limited to concentration in air. Typical Industrial Separations Typical applications of electrostatic separation are: 1) Beneficiation of ores, such as the concentration of the minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, hematite, and many others. 2) Purification of foods, such as the removal of trash and rodent excrement from cereal seeds. 3) Sorting of reusable wastes, such as separating insulation from copper wire shreds. 4) Electrostatic sizing, namely, the sorting of solid particles ac¬cording to their size or shape. Table I is a partial list of industrial separations made by electrostat¬ics. The various types of electrostatic separators and the feasibility of commercial separations are most easily understood by reviewing pertinent basic electrostatic theory and the selected electrical proper¬ties of solids prior to describing the equipment and application. This is the sequence of presentation used in this section. Electrostatic Units One of the greatest sources of confusion and error is due to the multitude of units used in electrostatic literature. The system of units used throughout this section is the rationalized MKS, often called Systéme International (SI) units. In this system the mechanical units are the meter, kilogram, and the serond. The unit of force is the newton (N). This system is completed by the addition of the unit of charge, the coulomb (C). The fourth dimension, viz., the coulomb. could also be considered to be the ampere, since one ampere is the flow in a conductor of one coulomb per second. Sand and gravel has been, and will continue to be, our principal construction material. Most of us are familiar with the patterns of past growth. Today we will examine the present status of this vital industry. We shall also attempt to look into the future to see where it is going and to evaluate the constraints that are being imposed. Natural aggregates are among the lowest in value of all bulk industrial minerals. From the processing point of view, sand and gravel production is relatively simple since the products are sized materials obtained from a deposit of satisfactory physical soundness. They can be used either loose or bound to provide bulk, strength, or protection. One of the main uses of coarse aggregate is in concrete as a filling material. As a general rule, the coarse aggregate constitutes about three-quarters of the volume of concrete. The other main use for aggregate is as a roadstone or roadbase to provide protective and stabilizing bulk beneath the road surface. Also it is used in a mixture with petroleum products as the wearing course on top. The sand and gravel industry is geographically widespread. In general, the output of operations is directly proportional to the amount of construction in any area. A wide variety of other aggregates compete with sand and gravel, including crushed stone, blast-furnace slag, clinker, and artificial and natural lightweight materials.

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. Mining practices at the Sunnyside Mines, Sunnyside Coal Company, Sunnyside, UT, have been documented by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers to preserve the extensive history of yield pillar-based longwall gateroad system evolution on the property. An overview of the historical mining conditions, practices, and innovations that resulted in the evolution of the two-entry yield pillar gateroad system currently employed at Sunnyside was developed from interviews of 30 long-time Sunnyside employees. Employing yielding chain pillars at Sunnyside virtually eliminates tailgate pillar bumps and contributes to reducing face bumps. Limiting the overall width of the gateroad system benefits bump control and especially, roof and floor stability.

Choosing a mining method for an underground ore body is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology give the design team an overwhelming array of possibilities for methods and equipment. Hecla's recent discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body has given the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine the exciting challenge of determining the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization, including drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of information as the project progresses through exploration and development.

As part of the Bureau of Mines research on identification of asbestos fibers, a method was discovered for removing asbestos fibers from water. This report describes this process and its theory of operation. The surface charge of amphibole minerals in potable water was found to be negative, and in common with most other silicate minerals, the isoelectric point of amphibole asbestos fibers lies in the pH range 4 to 6. Magnesia is one of the rare oxides with a high isoelectric point of about 11. The surface of magnesium oxide will, therefore, be positively charged in water at pH 6 to 6, while the electric charge an. amphibole asbestos fibers is negative. Because of the electrical attraction of these oppositely charged solids, it was possible to remove negatively charged asbestos fibers from water by percolating water that contained suspended-asbestos through a porous bed of magnesium oxide particles. A bed of 100/200-mesh MgO was added to a glass tube with a cotton plug. Aqusous suspensions of 1 to 10 ppm cummingtonite asbestos (amosite), crocidolite, and chrysotile were percolated through this porous plug of MgO. Even though chrysotile is positively charged below pH 11, MgO is an effective filter medium for removing it. The highly basic MgO appears to cause the chrysotile to flocculate and attach to particles within the bed. Scanning electron photomicrographs indicated that essentially complete removal of the fibers from water was accomplished. Other materials tested as contact filter media and found to be ineffective or only partially effective were sand, calcite, carbon, diatomaceous earth, and cellulose. Acidic alumina collected amphibole fibers but not chrysotile fibers.

The use of activated carbon to improve the selectivity in the separation of base metal minerals from bulk concentrates played an important role in the development of separation techniques employed at Tsumeb Corporation's Tsumeb and Kombat mines. In this paper the Kornbat mill flowsheet and metallurgical data are given with particular reference made to the separation techniques using activated carbon. The mine's historical background, geology and mining methods are described briefly.

Coal-water slurry preparation requires fine grinding and cleaning of coal by flotation. Finer grinding leads to increased ball wear and its effect on the surface properties of coal becomes of concern. Marked ball wear tests were performed to study the effects of oxygen, pH, the soluble species of coal and the addition of pyrrhotite on ball wear. The synergistic action of coal and oxygen greatly enhanced the corrosion of mild steel balls during grinding. Electrochemical measurements on a mild steel electrode in coal slurries and SEM observations of grinding ball surfaces were carried out to explore the corrosive wear mechanism.

The wear behaviors of grinding media with different chemical compositions and microstructures in wet grinding of a quartz-pyrrhotite mixture was investigated under various environments. The marked ball wear tests showed that the wear rate could be minimized by a suitable combination of martensite and ferrite within the same ball. A ball composed solely of hard martensite exhibited increased wear under an oxygen environment, while balls composed of both soft ferrite together with hard martensite exhibited decreased wear due presumably to the difference in their passivation? behaviors. The galvanic interactions between the two phases as well as among these phases and an electroactive mineral were investigated through electrochemical measurements under abrasive conditions in a slurry. The rates of formation of passive films controlled the corrosion currents of the high chromium steel media. Corrosive wear and its effect on flotation are discussed using the passivation kinetics model thereby developed.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty, clay-rich carbonate residuum. Covering much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the early 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri-1/2/3 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural' geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1 000 parts per million (ppm) or more of Pb, Zn and Ba. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in figure 1 indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units--Bonneterre Dolomite, Potosi and Eminence Dolomites, Roubidoux Formation, and the Jefferson City, Powell and Cotter Dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade Dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. The successful application of factors limiting the? availability of coal in eastern Kentucky depends on ac-curate assessment of the original resources. Examination of several previous coal-resource estimates for the region reveals significant differences among the outcomes. These differences relate to methods of analysis, biases in data and their utilization, and the problem of defining the lateral continuity of mineable beds. Improvements in the methods of estimating the original resources would greatly enhance the reliability of the results of the Coal Availability Program.

The introduction of recent advances in molecular biology into the field of microbial ecology has made available a powerful set of analytical tools for dissecting the structure of microbial communities in natural environments. The use of these approaches, many of them based on DNA-DNA hybridization enables the researcher to assess the occurrence of specific DNA sequences among the natural bacterial flora (Ford and Olson 1987). These techniques promise to have wide application as tools for monitoring the spread of introduced microorganisms (Trevors, 198'): Ford and Olson. 1987) and have been used to examine the response of bacterial communities to environmental contaminants and stressors (Barkay and Olson. 1986. Olson and Ford. 1986. Olson. Ford and Lester 1987) The occurrence of heavy metal resistance among microorganisms has been discussed as a possible tool for the detection of pathfinder elements employed in mineral exploration (Olson and Barkay 1986). In addition, the occurrence of heavy metal resistant bacteria may be utilized in protocols for assessing the occurrence and biological impact of contamination occurring as a consequence of mining operations. In this context the use of DNA hybridization technology enables the investigator to directly quantify the number of heavy metal resistant bacteria by the use of genetic probes specific for those resistance genes. The implementation of a strategy for detection of heavy metal resistance genes by hybridization technology is dependent on the availability of data on the genetic systems which encode resistance The availability of extensive DNA sequence data on mercury resistance genes (Brown et a11986. Barrineau et al 1984) has lead us to use gene probes specific for mercury resistance within natural bacterial populations as a model system for investigating the response of these bacterial populations to the occurrence of mercury In the environment.

Brought on stream in 1975, the 10,000-tpd copper oxide processing plant of Anamax Mining Co. at Twin Buttes, Ariz., is now at design capacity. Based on acid agitation leaching, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning, the Anamax plant bridges an ore to metal gap by producing mine site copper cathodes from lime-bearing oxidized feed. Until recently, such material was considered submarginal because copper recovery was uneconomic using conventional methods. The new Twin Buttes oxide plant, the largest of its kind in North America, is one stage in the expansion of Anamax, a joint venture owned equally by The Anaconda Co. and Amax Inc. Other phases include an accelerated stripping program in the pit, an expansion of the sulfide concentrator from 32,000 to 40,000 tpd, and construction of a 57 MW diesel generating station for the oxide plant. Once the basic oxide flowsheet had been selected, Anamax awarded a contract to a joint venture of Arthur G. McKee and Co.' (Western Knapp Engineering Div.) and Davy Powergas' (a member of the Davy International group). The contract covered process design, engi¬neering, procurement, and construction. The property, identified by Banner Mining Co. in the 1950s and developed by Anaconda, was put into production in 1965 as an open pit mine equipped with a 32,000-tpd sulfide flotation concentrator. The Twin Buttes mine has since become one of the largest earth¬moving operations in the world, excavating some 10 tons of waste per ton of ore. At the original sulfide mill feed rate, the mining fleet moved 375,000 tpd of material (225,000 tpd alluvium and 150,000 tpd of rock). The most significant copper mineral in the ore body is chalcopyrite, which is scattered in pockets of weak mineralization. Cap oxidation has progressed to depths of several hundred feet, principally as chryso¬colla. Present estimates place minable reserves at 347 million tons of sulfide ore grading 0.6% copper and 55 million tons of oxide ore grading 0.9% recoverable copper from 1.25% total copper. The nonre¬coverable fraction is composed of native copper and insoluble copper oxides and sulfides. The oxide ore has been partially stripped, and 25 million tons having a copper content greater than 0.6% have been stockpiled. The stripping of oxide ore to expose sulfides will continue for several years. The copper oxide studies launched by Banner Mining in the 1950s were continued by Anaconda. Process routes investigated included: acid leaching; cyanide leaching; segregation roasting; chlorination, oxidation, and reduction; flotation in combination with leaching; cal¬cite flotation plus leaching; copper oxide flotation; and sulfidization flotation. By late 1968 test work favored a low temperature roast followed by an ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach of the ore. During this period, acid leaching had been discounted because of excessive con¬sumption of expensive acid by the high limestone ore matrix. Restric¬tive SO2 emission controls in 1971 suggested an increase in acid production and availability at a lower cost. Research then switched to acid leaching, resulting in development of the present flowsheet. Mechanically agitated leaching in a cascaded series of tanks was selected in preference to vat leaching after piloting a stirred-tank system. Preliminary testing of vat leaching indicated that inter-vat solution clarification problems could be caused by gas evolution from leaching of high limestone ore. Lack of research time for resolution of this problem, plus success of the pilot agitation system, dictated the final flowsheet selection. In 1973 Anamax decided to proceed with agitation acid leaching to produce liquor for a solvent ion exchange (SIX) and electrowinning (EW) installation. At that time, such systems were proving their eco¬nomic viability, and they allowed direct recovery of high quality cath odes while bypassing the smelting and refining of lower grade cement copper precipitates. The Anamax oxide plant processes a grade of about 1% recovera¬ble copper from stockpiled sources and new mine production. Unit operations include size reduction, agitation leaching, countercurrent decantation washing of residue, pH adjustment of solution, clarifica¬tion, solvent ion exchange, and electrowinning of copper, with a mini¬mum of environmental impact. The feed to the primary crushers is composed of: 1) -10-in. stockpiled oxide ore, which has passed through the mine crusher and has been grade-segregated to allow blending for a consistent feed material. 2) -4-ft ROM oxide ore stockpiled in the early mining operation. 3) -10-in. ore currently being mined. Ore is delivered in 100-ton mine trucks to a dump pocket, where an apron feeder transfers the ore to an inclined 6-in. fixed grizzly. The grizzly oversize passes through a 48 x 60-in. primary jaw crusher, where it is reduced to -6 in. The fixed grizzly undersize and the crusher product are conveyed to a 4-in. vibrating grizzly. Oversize from this grizzly reports to a 7-ft Standard cone crusher, where it is reduced to -1 in. The crusher product and the vibrating grizzly undersize are conveyed to two 8 x 20-ft double-deck vibrating screens that operate in closed circuit with two 7-ft short head cone crushers. Screen undersize (-1/2 in.) is delivered to a covered conical fine ore stockpile with a designed live capacity of 15,000 st. Beneath the stockpile are ten Pioche belt feeders feeding two conveyor belts that supply the milling circuits. Each group of five feeders has two variable speed and three fixed speed drives. Grinding to 95% -48 mesh is done in two parallel lines, each consisting of an 111/1 x 18S -ft rod mill and a 12' x 30-ft ball mill in open circuit. Water is added to maintain a pulp density of 72% solids in the mills. Further water additions are made to the ball mill discharge sumps to create a 60% solids slurry for transfer to the leaching reactors. The nominal grinding rate is 440 tph solids. A splitter box on the product from the mills separates the incoming slurry into two streams, one for the leaching reactors and the other for the pH adjustment reactors. This split is determined by the lime content of the feed material and the pH of solution entering the pH adjustment reactors. Five 30-ft diam by 31-ft high mechanically agitated, rubber-lined leach tanks are arranged in cascade, with gravity transfer from one to another by enclosed launders. Concentrated sulfuric acid (93.2%) from storage is added to the pulp principally at the first leach tank, and the reacted slurry leaving the cascade after a 5-hr residence time at 50% solids is pumped to countercurrent decantation (CCD) wash thickeners.' At this point, most of the soluble copper has been leached from the ore. Up to 250 lb of sulfuric acid is consumed per ton of ore, the acid being supplied in tank cars from a nearby smelter. Leached slurry at 50% solids is washed countercurrently with return raffinate from the SIX plant in a series of four Doff-Oliver center caisson, 400-ft diam thickeners. Solids advance from thickeners No. I through No. 4 to the tailings dam. SIX raffinate advances from thickener No. 4 to thickener No. l, where a pregnant solution overflows to pH adjustment. To optimize solvent extraction, the pH of the pregnant solution from CCD thickener No. I is adjusted from 1.5 to 2.5 by adding unreacted ground slurry (split from the grinding circuit) to the preg¬nant overflow of No. I CCD thickener. The resulting slurry is retained for 45 min in three mechanically agitated leach tanks. CO, generated during leach and pH adjustment is ducted to a demister, where entrained acid droplets are removed. The cleaned CO, and the No. 4 CCD underflow are the only effluents from the plant. The underflow of No. 4 thickener mixes with tailings from the sulfide concentrator and is neutralized. Slurry exits the pH adjustment vessels at about 10% solids and

Geologic and technical factors such as coal seam thickness, stripping ratios, roof conditions, partings, faults, and size and geometry of the reserve block greatly impact the availability of Illinois coal for mining. Residential and commercial developments also restrict access to coal reserves in some areas. Despite the collective effects of these factors, large blocks of bituminous coal reserves suitable for efficient, low-cost underground mining remain available in Illinois.

Geological remote sensing is, "....the study of the Earth utilizing electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) which is either reflected or emitted from the land surface in wavelengths ranging from ultra-violet (0.3 micrometre) to microwave (3 metre)."1 Selected examples which illustrate a variety of successful geologic applications include lithologic mapping, 2 engineering soils mapping,3 tectonic interpretation,4 and mineral and petroleum exploration.5 This report examines the applicability of remote sensing for bauxite exploration in northeastern Mississippi. Specific objectives were to map lithologies of northeastern Mississippi from LANDSAT imagery, to determine the utility of LANDSAT imagery for delineating and mapping known deposits of bauxite, and to discover and map new bauxite deposits.

Oxidation potentials have been measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH and related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are constructed and show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide in the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of many investigations (1,2,3,4,5,6), and from these studies several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved. Wark and Cox (7) and Gaudin(8) have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues (9,10,11) have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland (12) has shown that both of these theories describe accurately the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition but fail to describe the relationship, between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart(12) suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar(4,6) has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg/liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10; these results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface.
