Pull-off forces were measured for 8-9 pm diameter polystyrene (PSI particles on smooth spin- coated polystyrene films and hexadecanethiol (HDT) self-assemble monolayer surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three parameters were controlled during experimentation: (i) the maximum applied load pressing the particle onto the substrate was varied from 50 to 4,000 nN, (ii) loading/unloading rate for the particle to attach and separate from the substrate varied from 0.01 to 9.3 Hz, and (iii) contact time for particle to reside on the substrate surface before retracting the particle to separate it from the surface changed from I µsecond to 200 seconds. the pull-off forces increased with increasing applied loading, increasing loading/unloading rate, and increasing contact time for the PS particle on PS film and on HDT monolayer. The PS particles experience elastic and plastic deformations duringpull-08 force measurements. Plastic deformation is primarily associated with flattening of surface irregularities. The results obtained in this research suggest that the particle-substrate contact areas of the magnitude comparable to those predicted by the JKR contact mechanical model can be reached in the AFM experiments by using high applied loads and long particle-substrate contact times. This result re-opens the prospect of' using AFM for studying surface energies of deformable micro-particles, even if the micro-particles have small irregularities on the surface.

INTRODUCTION The accomplishment of a well engineered design, and the realization of efficient plant operation cannot be achieved without weaving a web of safety consciousness from the beginning of the project. When the plant becomes operational, and throughout its life, responsibility safety will rest with the client or operator. Recognition of this understanding does not reduce the importance of the engineering and construction contractor's role, but merely puts the responsibility where it belongs. A project which has had little or no operator input during the early stages of design is almost certain to have serious work place safety, health, and environmental problems in spite of the fact that all MSHA and OSHA design requirements were met and the engineering was performed using accepted practices. DEFINITIONS The author has a personal preference in safety definitions that begins and ends with simplicity. If the safety criteria, program, and rules are confusing or complex, the results will soon become obvious. Confusing and complex are the key elements in the avoidance of responsibility and if punitive is added to the list, a brew exists which breeds accidents, illness, and poor performance. A safely designed and operated plant is one that a worker can journey to each day; leaving that person and his or her family with the above average expectation that the person will return healthy, emotionally intact, and hopefully a little wealthier. INTRODUCTION Spent household dry cell batteries are frequently disposed of with metropolitan wastestream (MSW) in landfills where they can leak due to handling or aging. Frequent rain and sun cycles, especially in tropical environments, coupled to the action of leachate, dissolve their metal constituents which will eventually reach rivers, lakes and underground water. It is well known that some of these metals are fundamental to sustain life and that is why living organisms concentrate them through their metabolism, but it has been also recognized that beyond specific limits they can definitely be deleterious to the environment. In other words, high concentration of heavy metals are proven to cause chronic or acute diseases and toxic reactions, by acting on mammals' kidneys, liver and nervous system. In addition, some metals frequently used in household batteries, as mercury and cadmium, are said to be carcinogenic (Landis et al. 1995, Silva et al. 1988). Occasionally, plants to treat MSW are coupled to compost production. Household batteries present in MSW can be dragged into these plants, contaminating their products and eventually reaching vegetables making them not proper to consume by people and animals. Alternatively, batteries are also conveyed to incinerators and burned, throwing into the atmosphere volatile species. These can either act as contaminants as toxic vapor species or be delivered by winds and scavenged by rains contaminating soils and water far away from their source. In conclusion, despite the treatment applied to MSW, one can say that battery residues are potentially environmentally hazardous. The careful assessment of the environmental impact caused by residues of household batteries it is not an easy task and it can be referred as a multivariable problem. First, many different household batteries are produced by industry and the potential environmental hazard associated to their disposal depends primarily on the type of battery and manufacturer's technology. The Colorado Geological Survey completed an inventory of environmental degradation associated with abandoned and inactive mines on National Forest System lands in Colorado. In the course of the inventory, areas with naturally occurring acid rock drainage were also noted. Approximately 18,000 abandoned mine- related features were inventoried, including about 900 features that are considered significant enough environmental problems to warrant further investigation. Water quality data, such as pH and conductivity were gathered at all features where water was present, such as draining adits, seepage at the toe of dumps and tailings, and standing water in shafts. Samples were taken where field tests indicated low pH andlor high conductivity, including several areas with naturally occurring acid rock drainage. Samples were analyzed for dissolved and total metals, and for selected anions. All mine locations and data collected by the field geologists were entered on field forms and, subsequently, into a computer database and GIS format. With the information provided by the inventory, the Forest Service, in cooperation with other agencies, has been able to prioritize abandoned mines for reclamation. In most cases, cleanup is approached on a watershed basis. Mines in priority watersheds have been selected for reclamation first. Watersheds where studies prerequisite to cleanup are occurring include the upper Anirnas River, Willow Creek (tributary to the upper Rio Grande), Chalk Creek (tributary to the upper Arkansas River), the Uncompahgre River, and the Alamosa River. During the inventory, evidence of naturally occurring water quality degradation was found in areas where little or no evidence of mining activity exists. These areas include the upper Alamosa River, the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek, Peekaboo Gulch, and Handcart Gulch. Water from these natural sources has been found to significantly exceed Colorado water quality standards for several metals.

The world-famous beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain, northwest of Delta, Utah, are the principal resource of beryllium in the United States. Beryllium metal, beryllium-metal alloys, and beryllium oxide ceramics have a long history of specialty applications. Beryllium is used in X-ray windows, nuclear reactors: and a wide variety of industrial and electronic products. The Spor Mountain deposits are located on the western rim of the Thomas caldera, one of at least three volcanic depressions that subsided during voluminous eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuff in early Oligocene time. Beginning in early Miocene time, the caldera rim and its volcanic fill were cut extensively by basin-and-range faults. Basin-and-range faulting was accompanied by local eruption of high-silica rhyolite. High-silica topaz rhyolites at Spor Mountain (21 Ma) and Topaz Mountain (6 to 7 Ma) are especially rich in fluorine and lithophile trace elements such as beryllium. Topaz rhyolite of the Miocene Spor Mountain Formation, or its magma was the source of the Spor Mountain beryllium deposits. At Spor Mountain, deposits of beryllium, as submicroscopic bertrandite, Be4Si207(OH)2, occur in rhyolite tuff beneath flows and domes of topaz rhyolite. The beryllium deposits also contain minor disseminated fluorite, lithium, uranium, and anomalous traces of other lithophile elements. The host tuff, originally composed of glass, zeolite, and abundant clasts of carbonate rock, has been altered to clay and potassium feldspar. Fluorite, quartz, and opal replaced carbonate clasts in the tuff. Beryllium was deposited with fluorite in altered clasts and in the matrix of altered tuff. Fluorspar and uranium deposits are spatially and genetically associated with the beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain. Fluorspar deposits at Spor Mountain occur mostly in breccia pipes. Some fluorspar pipes contain uranium, thought to be dispersed in the structure of fluorite. Secondary uranium minerals are dispersed throughout the tuff that hosts beryllium deposits and comprise lenses of ore-grade uranium at the Yellow Chief mine.

The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45' to 50' toward the northwest. Since it has been demonstrated that silica caused phagocytic cells to activate lipoxygenase metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids we thought selective inhibition of this metabolic pathway might be helpful in treatment of silicosis. It is known that lipoxygenase metabolism plays a role in the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory and hypersensitivity conditions. Further, it is believed that the alveolar phagocytic cells which engulf silica begin the inflammatory cycle which produces the metabolic products, cytokines and growth factors which causes fibrosis in the lung. There have been indications that drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase can inhibit fibrosis from other causes. Previously, we developed a method which detects the activity of lipoxygenase metabolism by measuring free radical oxidation via light production or chemiluminescence (CL). We decided to apply this method to phagocytic cells that would be found in the lung in the presence of silica with and without newly developed inhibitors of the lipoxygenase reaction. We used drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase directly including AA861 (TAKEDA), A63162 (Abbott), and an inhibitor that scavenges free radicals produced from the lipoxygenase reaction, nordihydroguairetic acid. In addition we used an indirect inhibitor, tetrandrine. We found drug inhibition of silica activated CL from alveolar macrophages, neutrophils and human leukemia (HL-60) cells differentiated with DMSO. Nordihydroguairetic acid 2x10-5M produced almost complete inhibition in all three cell types. In human leukemia cells (HL-60) A63162 and tetrandrine were equally inhibitory at 42% while in human neutrophils A63162 and tetrandrine were less active 22 and 10% respectively. In macrophages A63162 and AA861 were less than 50% inhibitory to cellular CL at 2xl0-5M. Direct assay of tetrandrine (2x10-5M) with sodium arachidonate and soybean lipoxygenase reveals no inhibition. All antilipoxygenase drugs regardless of mechanism were inhibitory to cellular chemiluminescence from all three types of phagocytic cells. These drugs alone or in mixtures could prove useful in treatment of silicosis.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

The subject of quartz occurrences in respirable coal mine dusts has been of increasing concern in recent years. The primary impetus for this concern has been provided by better measurement technology that has detected an increased number of mines with high quartz content in their respirable dusts. This paper presents the results of statistical analyses of quartz levels in multi-stage impactor samples from eighteen different coal mining sections located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado and Utah. The quartz and kaolinite determinations were then determined by combining impactor stage loadings to provide larger dust masses and applying the infrared spectrometry procedure outlined in Bureau of Mines/MSHA Method P7. The results will be presented using two categories of data collected during two separate phases of the research: (1) quartz concentration data from mines where quartz was known to be present in relatively high concentrations, and (2) quartz concentration data from mines chosen at random. The aspects of the occurrence of quartz in coal mine airborne dusts that will be reported include the size dependence of the quartz content, quartz variations with location in the mining section, and variations due to mining region. The results of the study show a strong pattern of size dependence of the quartz content in mines for which high quartz concentrations exist. A similar, though less pronounced, pattern exists in mines chosen at random. Quartz levels appear to have a varying relationship to section location and strong geographical patterns do not appear to exist in the data collected. Kaolinite content was found to be similar to that of quartz with patterns that are somewhat more consistent.

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

INTRODUCTION It is now 21 years since Wiegel and Li published their paper on a random version of Gaudin's model for the mineral liberation phenomenon (Wiegel and Li, 1967). This paper was to revitalise interest in North America in one of the most fascinating, difficult and important problems in the field of theoretical mineral processing. Gaudin had many years previously (Gaudin, 1939) already presented a penetrating analysis of the problem and Wiegel and Li based their analysis very closely on the Gaudin model but they realised that the indeterminate geometrical structure of mineralogical materials demanded that only probabilistic models could provide the necessary quantitative information when working with real materials. They proposed and solved a randomised version of the Gaudin model but retained the essential geometrical simplicity of cubic mineral grains and a cubic fracture pattern. Although their model met with some limited success it was to be superseded in due course. During the 1940's and 1950's the classical field of geometrical probability spawned the mathematical discipline of integral geometry and as early as 1965, Bodziony (1965, a,b) showed that the techniques of integral geometry could accommodate the problems associated with the indeterminate nature of the geometrical mineralogical structure, provided that these were couched in probabilistic terms. In particular he showed that the quantitative description of the comminution process and that of liberation could be decoupled with the resulting economy of effort. This idea has profoundly influenced the course of research in liberation theory and has greatly facilitated its application and the measurement of liberation in a practical way. "INTRODUCTION In recent years, the development of tunnel boring machines has revolutionized the tunneling industry. The general structure of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be described as a multi-component system. To achieve high performance rates, machine elements have to perform reliably. Performance losses and interruptions of the construction process should be prevented or at least, reduced to a minimum. In order to achieve high advancing rates, cutting tools must be in good condition at any time. Furthermore, failure of individual tools might result in increased and faster wear of remaining structural components. For this reason, maintaining and replacing cutting tools is crucial to prevent project delays due to insufficient boring performance. Precise prognoses concerning the prevailing geology are infeasible and thus, efficient scheduling of maintenance actions is challenging. The intention of this work is to analyze different approaches of TBM maintenance in soft ground. Different strategies are analyzed by the use of a simulation approach. Cutting tool condition is regarded as performance limiting factor. The maximum operation time of the cutting tools is determined using the “Soil Abrasivity Index”. A case study serves to show the effects of different maintenance strategies on total project duration. SCHEDULING OF MAINTENANCE ACTIONS Scheduling maintenance actions of single and multi-component systems concerns numerous fields of industrial production. Concentrating on mechanized tunneling in soft ground, cutting tool maintenance represents the most common reason for intermission of advance (Köppl 2014). In literature, time-based and condition-based maintaining techniques are widely discussed. The following section outlines the principles of time- and condition-based policies. Furthermore, examples for their applications in recent research are given. Time-Based Maintenance In general, the time-based maintenance approach assumes that the failure behavior of the system components is predictable. Maintenance actions are scheduled according to predefined intervals (e.g., hours, days, weeks). A detailed analysis of preventive repair times or interval forms the basis for maintenance decisions. For this approach, an adequate quantity and quality of data is fundamental. Numerous studies deal with the analysis of time-based maintenance for production equipment. In fields of mechanized tunneling, unplanned machine downtimes restrict the applicability of time-based maintenance approaches. Thus, this paper mainly focuses on condition-based maintenance."

The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher's boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. Several of the teachers at Belmont remained good friends as long as we were on the same side of the continent. The finest was C.H. In the mining industry and in new and expanding fields, such as electronics, nucleonics, and astronautics, a new type of manager has evolved. The name most generally used is project manager. His business is to create a product and the principal means through which he accomplishes this is project management. In this chapter, new information is the product of the project manager; as such the products, for which the computer methods described throughout this volume are designed, fall in the domain of project management. It has been the author's experience that project management is the management tool to effectively direct the information technology function within an organization. The purpose of this chapter is to describe project management and to identify and present a solution to the problems associated with project management in the development and application of computer methods in a minerals environment. Specifically, the problems to be addressed will center around: (1) recognition of the need for project management in terms of business-environmental factors and product characteristics, (2) formulation of a method of operation in terms of organization and implementation, and (3) application of project management to the minerals industry.

INTRODUCTION Historical mining activities in the Robinson Mining District, in the Egan Range of east-central Nevada (White Pine County), resulted in five open pits (Veteran, Tripp, Liberty, Ruth, and Kimbley Pits), several large mine-waste dumps, and numerous underground workings developed for copper, zinc, gold, lead-silver, and manganese (Figure 1). Groundwater percolating downward through the copper sulfide ores produced a blanket-like supergene zone enriched in copper, which has been one of the primary objectives of mining since the early part of this century. To obtain permits for future operation, an EIS was conducted that evaluated future pit- lake chemistry, groundwater quantity and quality issues, transport of water and solutes subjacent to a proposed tailings impoundment, and the potential for waste dump acidification. AREA HYDROGEOLOGY The mine area is on a ridgeline draining to the Steptoe Valley to the east and to the White River Valley to the West. Precipitation in the Robinson Mining District ranges from a low of 15 cm (6 in.) per year in the valley to more than 50 cm (20 in.) per year in the surrounding mountains. Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation, leading to a net loss of water from the basin as either surface flow or underflow to the north at Currie, Nevada (Eakin et al. 1967). The White River Valley, which lies to the south and west of the mine area, includes approximately 4,200 km2 (1,620 mi2) of the upper part of the Colorado River Basin. This valley is 112 km (70 mi) long, 32-48 km (20-30 mi) wide, and like Steptoe Valley, evaporation and transpiration exceed precipitation (Maxey and Eakin 1949). The local groundwater flow system in the Robinson Mining District and the proposed mine area is dominated by two main components: (1) a groundwater mound or high between the Ruth Pit and Murry Springs, and (2) a shallow groundwater flow divide that follows the ridge crest south of Ruth, which contains the Veteran and Tripp pits. Besides the alluvium, the main hydrostratigraphic units controlling groundwater flow are limestones, shales, and sandstones, along with the intrusive quartz monzonite stocks. The production of soda ash from trona (sodium sesquicarbonate, Na2CO3•NaHCO3•2H2O) resources has completely displaced the production of synthetic soda ash in the USA. Further, the utilization of other trona resources is under consideration in China, Turkey, etc. Recent research has been concerned with the development of flotation technology for the trona industry. In this regard studies on the flotation behavior of sodium carbonate salts: trona, sodium carbonate monohydrate and decahydrate, as well as the flotation behavior of sodium bicarbonate, are reported for both cationic (dodecyl ammonium hydrochloride) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) collectors. It has been found that strong flotation of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be achieved with 100% recovery, while the other sodium carbonate salts do not float well. These results have been explained by FTIR analysis of aqueous solutions of Na2CO3and NaHCO3in a range of concentrations from very dilute to saturated conditions. The changes in the shape of the O-H stretching band of water are correlated with the flotation behavior of Na2CO3salts and NaHCO3. In addition, the absorption band of the carbonate ion at ca. 1385 cm-1is used to monitor its interactions with water and/or other ions in solution. The infrared results demonstrate thatNa2CO3acts as a water structure maker, leading to an extensively hydrated surface that accounts for the poor flotation of most sodium carbonate salts. In contrast, NaHCO3does not have this characteristic and consequently complete flotation is possible with both cationic and anionic collectors. These results support the previous water structure analysis for soluble salt flotation of alkali halides and other oxyanion salts.

Steady-state flowsheet simulators for mineral processing plants have evolved to a current high level of utility and accuracy. Reliable, general-purpose, semi-empirical models now exist in nearly all unit operations categories particularly in the areas of comminution and classification. .These models, installed as user-selectable functions within the integrated frame- work of flowsheet balance-solver software systems, can be strung together to represent any plant configuration. In addition, CAD-like graphics, data reconciliation and model parameterization functions have become standard features of the current generation of integrated plant simulators. These advances have given engineers the capability to investigate many different plant scenarios while requiring a minimum of actual plant testwork. This paper describes a methodology and an integrated software package which are being successfully applied in a number of operating plants worldwide to predict plant performance under changing conditions. Those conditions which can be changed include effect-of ore type, feed size, water addition rates, equipment geometries and flowsheet modifications. By using data from actual plant optimization exercises in real mills, the paper illustrates and out- lines a technique which includes plant data collection, ore breakage testing, flowsheet simulation, model-fitting (parameterization), data adjustment and model experimentation. Brief descriptions of some unit operations models, such as autogenous mills and cyclones, are provided as examples of the current state of such models. Ore breakage testing and its relation to certain models is also discussed. Computer- generated size-distribution graphs, along with tabular data generated by the simulator, round out the presentation and serve to demonstrate the real- ism and accuracy of the models. The paper concludes with a partial list of cases where this technology has been successfully applied.

Sand-and-gravel aggregates have become the number-one, nonmetallic-mineral resource in the world. Surficial aggregate deposits of economic size are becoming increasingly rare in most parts of Canada. In southern Saskatchewan, this is especially true, and detection and delineation of intertill sand-and-gravel deposits with airborne electromagnetic (EM) surveys have proven very successful. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys detect such deposits by their resistivity contrast relative to the surrounding clay-rich soils. Dighem helicopter-borne electromagnetic surveys map soil variations over a large area quickly and cost effectively, greatly reducing the cost of detecting and mapping deposits compared with traditional methods (air-photo interpretation, ground EM, and drilling.). The multiple-frequency EM system used by Dighem can map variations both horizontally and vertically. Magnetic data collected simultaneously are useful in mapping bedrock geology. Both resistivity and bedrock maps aid in the important task of reducing drilling costs and person-hours in the field. The results of the survey are presented as maps of ground resistivity, which are relatively easy to interpret. These maps are produced in the field at the time of the survey, making quick follow-up of the survey possible. Airborne EM surveys can map the extent and depth of aggregate deposits more effectively than is practical from the ground. Since aggregate deposits can vary tremendously in a very short distance (<300 m) large-area EM maps can show both local area variability and also help develop intertill trends. A test survey for the Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation Department over a 3-km by 5-km area mapped all the known deposits as well as some unknown deposits, subsequently proven by drilling. The test-survey data show that the method not only detected the deposits, but also gave an estimate of the shape (volume) of each of the deposits. Comparison of the data to drill sections shows excellent correlation. Theoretical modelling demonstrates that the multifrequency system can discriminate sand and gravel from bedrock ridges. Since the successful test work, about 725 km2 of ground have been surveyed, resulting in the discovery of four new deposits, which can be used immediately, resulting in significant savings for the Saskatchewan government and taxpayer.

The ability to link geological sections on a graphics screen to form three dimensional geology representation was implemented at Kidd Creek in 1987. This technique affords an opportunity to optimize metal estimation in ore at the Kidd Creek copper, zinc and silver mine, by applying enhanced interpretation methods. On a series of geological sections varieties of ore are outlined. These are linked from section to section to form polyhedra which closely simulate the three dimensional shapes of the different ore types referred to as mintypes. The orebodies are divided into zones, referred to as domains, that approximate the function of variograrns, for which&apos; preferential continuity of mineralization has been estimated for distances in the width, strike and dip directions. These distances define ellipsoidal volumes of influence. The domains are also linked into polyhedra. Both types, coded by ore variety and zone, are mapped into the block model. Tonnage and metal values are calculated for ten-foot cubical cells of the block model by any of several estimation methods under domain control. In estimating the metal grades for a cell the predetermined search ellipse is applied to select only those drill hole assays of the same mintype as the cell designation. Once grade estimations have been determined for the cubical cells comprising the model, a wide range of stored information can be viewed. For example, in plan at any row elevation or on vertical section at any azimuth, as either printed values for the cells or as contoured data. This flexibility is of particular value in checking and refining the geological interpretation to better conform to ore types and grades actually mined. Combined with three dimensional geological modelling, and correctly chosen domains, the use of mintypes implants essential geological control into the system and prevents assays for one ore type from affecting grade estimation in adjacent ore types. The three dimensional geological modelling and block model segments provide information which is effectively applied to the stope design, production, planning and control parts of the system.
