Fine coal is substantially more costly to process than coarse coal because of technical difficulties associated with separating fine particles and removing process water from both clean coal and refuse. Therefore, companies are often forced to discard coal fines to waste impoundments. According to a recent report published by National Research Council, the U.S. coal industry is discarding 70-90 million tons of coal fines annually to 713 active impoundments, most of which are located in Central Appalachia. On October 11, 2000, a 72-acre impoundment near Inez, Kentucky, accidentally released 250 million gallons of coal slurry into nearby underground mines, creeks, rivers, and schoolyards, thereby creating serious environ-mental concerns. Fortunately, recent advances in separation technologies make it possible to recover fine coal more efficiently from existing coal preparation plants and from waste streams previously discarded to impoundments. The availability of these new technologies allows companies to increase profitability and minimize environmental risks, which are conducive for achieving sustainable mining.

he Broken Aro coal mine is located at the Woodbury Wildlife Preserve 11 km (7 miles) west of Coshocton, OH on State Route 541. Underground min¬ing at the 16-hm2 (40-acre) site took place during the 1910s. During the past five years, surface mining has occurred along the western and northern perimeters of the underground region. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), R&F Coal and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved in a project to remine the abandoned underground complex. The program also includes installing a mine seal made of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. Previous mining activity in this area has resulted in an acid mine drainage (AMD) problem on portions of the reserve. In particular, a prominent AMD source is present in the Simmons Run drainage. The project goal is to eliminate or reduce the AMD that is discharging into the watershed. It was initially hoped that the Simmons Run drainage area could be economically mined. Accordingly, this area was included in the mine permit. However, experience with other previously mined areas on this reserve showed that the old mine workings were more extensive than originally thought. Old mine workings present several problems. The most significant are reduced coal recovery, poor coal quality and AMD liability. All of these problems increase mining costs. And the more extensive the old workings, the more significant the increase in cost. Based on R&F's experience with old mine workings in this area, it was decided that economic recovery of the Simmons Run drainage reserve was not possible. As a result, R&F excluded the Simmons Run drainage area from its early mine plans. Some time after it was decided not to affect the Simmons Run drainage area, R&F and ODNR's Division of Mining and Reclamation discussed the possibility of removing this area from the permit and attempting to correct the AMD problem as an Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) project. Specifically, the discussion centered around mining through a portion of the old mine workings to expose the mine openings in the highwall. Once exposed, the mine openings would be sealed using FGD material from the nearby Conesville power plant operated by AEP. In addition, there was interest in reclaiming the old tipple and associated gob pile located adjacent to Coshocton County Road 17 on the opposite side of Simmons Run. R&F attempted to eliminate the AMD problem by sealing the mine openings with FGD material. Once the seals were installed, they were covered with overburden. Monitoring wells were installed to determine the effectiveness of the seal and the inundation progress in the old mine workings as well as monitoring the quality of ground water. The project was jointly funded by revenue from the sale of the coal recovered during the project and AML funds. The FGD seal is expected to cause well water levels to increase above preseal elevations. However, the additional head pressure due to increased water depths in the underground mine may cause seepage through the bottom of the mine or out through the perimeter. The in¬creased water depth in the underground mine is expected to cause lower oxygen concentrations in the underground mine water. Since acidity is produced by oxidation of iron pyrites, less oxygen should result in better quality water. Monitoring wells will be installed before seal installation so that pre- and postseal water levels and well water quality can be determined. Surface sampling locations will be identified. These will be monitored before and after seal placement.

One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The Indications of Rock Mass Pressure Individual Dog Heading Individual dog headings are set wide apart from each other in the unmined ore deposit area where there is no interaction of headings. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. Voluminous deposits of commercial-grade phosphate occur in sedimentary strata in a 350,000 km2 (135,000 mi2) area of the middle Rocky Mountains of North America known as the Western Phosphate Field. The Permian marine strata that host the phosphate were deposited on the western margin of the North American craton and subsequently deformed, first by folding and thrust faulting of the Laramide orogeny, and then by Cenozoic Basin and Range block faulting. Carbonate fluorapatite is the primary phosphorus-bearing mineral. Organic matter is abundant in some strata, and both biogenic and non-biogenic pyrite are also present. Certain strata are enriched in several trace elements, especially in arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), uranium (U), and zinc (Zn). Phosphate has been mined from the Western Phosphate Field for nearly 100 years. Phosphate mining and processing constitutes the largest mineral industry of Idaho, producing more than $600 million in processed mineral value in 1997. Resource management agencies, phosphate producers, and others are concerned about the release of Se from phosphate mine wastes, especially at Maybe Canyon, and the potential effects that Se and other trace elements may have on the environment and on human health. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Team scientists initiated a multidisciplinary study of the Permian Phosphoria Formation and related rocks in the south- eastern Idaho sector of the Western Phosphate Field in response to a request by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Studies to date reveal that Se is present in several phases, including native Se, and in an as yet unidentified form, possibly an organo-Se compound. Selenium is also present in pyrite and sphalerite. Selenium concentrations range from 1.2 to greater than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) in samples collected from exposures of the Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Phosphoria Formation (Meade Peake) at Enoch Valley. The results suggest that Se concentrations vary spatially across strata and with depth, perhaps comparable to spatial variations of phosphate and organic carbon concentrations throughout the Western Phosphate Field demonstrated in previous studies. Some Se-enriched strata may be of adequate dimension to allow selective extraction during mining. Such units could be handled separately from the main ore process or waste streams and isolated in order to reduce the potential for release of Se to the environment

For small precious metals mining to show a comeback a different perspective must be taken than that of larger mining companies. This perspective must be much the same as that of past successful smaller mining enterprises such as when the US had a need for Uranium. Abandoned mines and environmental concerns in older mining districts have discouraged many from entering with the attitudes of why try there if so many unsuccessful mines exist. A small mining venture can be successful there but must have a "think smart'' attitude. There must be a thorough understanding of deposits, utilization of advanced technology and a properly managed mining operation. "THINK SMART" MINING The small mine operator is usually looking for small high grade deposits, consequently, long term success depends on a series of small successful mining operations. The small miner must succeed right-off or credibility and future project funding will suffer. No veteran of even a few years in the mining industry needs to be told that a dollar spent on production today fails to yield as much as it once did. More efficient equipment and techniques have helped soften the problem, but there is little likelihood that a mining company can do much to control inflation, wages, regulations, or grade. That leaves the small miner to "think smart" as one area where operating dollars can still be stretched to produce more than they presently do (Gardner. 1981). In the planning stage of a mining venture, when most options are still open, the main controllable elements are market timing, deposit selection, cutoff grade, mining method, mine design, mining sequence, rate of production build up, process design, project financing structure, project management, and project ownership structure. During planning, optimum criteria can be established for each of these. Once a mine is in production, these options are foreclosed or at least severely constrained. The more thought given to a mining program using all information available the less the risk of encountering disabling surprises. Thus the intent of this paper is to suggest the "think smart" attitude most small mine operations use for long term success. If one looks at a number of successful mining ventures, whether large or small, there is a general logic most have followed to be successful. They have used proven exploration, mining and processing techniques along with economic evaluation and experienced personnel to improve their odds. LOGIC IN DEVELOPING A FEASIBLE VENTURE Most successful small mine ventures achieve positive cash flow as quickly as possible by seeking out those deposits which require the least time and expense on activities leading up to production. To do this they look for deposits that are the most accessible, easily investigated, mined and processed with the cheapest fundamental methods. The general sequence of events starting with district selection are deposit selection, preliminary feasibility, exploration, detailed economic feasibility, mine planning, development and production. Each successive step becomes more costly requiring intermediate decisions along the way. District Selection Small operations should look for known deposits which favor the occurrence of the type deposit sought rather than efforts in unproductive areas. Known deposits in developed areas have some advantages over remote areas: 1. More alternative methods of transportation are available. 2. A larger stable work force is available. 3. The area is usually more pro-mining. 4. Power, water, housing, technical services, skilled services, schools, recreation and shopping are available.

This work is concerned with the extraction of refractory metals using an electro-reduction process, in which a molten oxide melt, instead of halide, is used as the electrolyte. The process may provide an alternative method of producing refractory metals from their ores through use of a reverse-polarity direct current (DC) plasma arc heating process. In such a process, the plasma torch itself acts as an anode, and resulting liquid or solid product metals work as a cathode, whereas the molten oxide melt plays the role of an electron transfer layer. The focus of this study is: the electro-reduction of scheelite; vanadium pentoxide; and chromite. For the vanadium pentoxide, the proposed melt is mainly composed of CaO-V2O5/Li2O-B2O3-V2O5or FeO-CaO-SiO2-V2O5-Li2O with the addition of other alkali and alkaline metal oxides. In the case of scheelite ore, the SiO2-CaO-Li2O-WO3system is used as melt and metal aluminum or nickel could be used as a collecting media. As for the reduction of chromite ore, SiO2-CaO-Cr2O3-Li2O system with trace amount of CaF2is used as the melt. As a demonstration, chromium was successfully produced at a laboratory scale through the plasma driven electro-reduction process. One of the studied slags had a composition of 13.8% CaO; 4.9%CaF2; 36.4% Cr2O3; 6.9% Li2O; and 38.0% SiO2. Two observations are significant in this laboratory scale study. The first one was that the amount of Cr2O3and FeO, which were predominantly electronic conductors in the oxide melt, greatly affected the conducting mechanism of the melt. With high concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the melt, the current efficiency was fairly low. In this case, chromium was found to be barely reduced because of electronic conducting mechanism. For example, with initial slag of 60% Cr2O3, no chromium was found reduced. With low concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the studied melt, typically no more than 30% Cr2O3, it was observed that chromium was readily reduced due to the dominant ionic conducting mechanism. The second observation was that the addition of SiO2tothe melt helped to make the oxide melt more ionic, which was apparently desirable to the molten oxide electrolysis. However, high content of silica had a negative effect on the fluidity of the melt. This was resolved by adding trace amounts of CaF2to the melt. Therefore, by judicious selection of oxide melt, refractory metal oxides might be dissolved into it and yet the melt itself retains the required ionicity. A reverse-polarity DC plasma driven molten oxide electrolysis may prove to be a viable alternative route for the extractive metallurgy of refractory metals.

"Shale gas has become an increasingly important clean energy, which has been explored worldwide in recent decades. Supercritical CO2 acts as fracturing fluid for shale gas production. The safety monitoring is essential to prevent any kinds of leakage from the reservoir as the supercritical CO2 physically stored hundred kilometres underground. Seismic tomography is an imaging technique that uses induced seismic waves to create three dimensional images of the subsurface. It is an effective monitoring method to evaluate the caprock integrity in the carbon dioxide sequestration storage (CCS). In this experimental research, a simulated uniaxial compressive load is applied on a granite sample to analyze the stress redistribution for long-term in-situ caprock integrity during CO2 injection. The induced seismic waves are recorded and seismic events are traced based on the Geiger algorithm. The frequency of seismic events correlates with the caprock failure evolution. The acquired seismic data is divided into four regimes based on the frequency of seismic events and the failure process to examine the failure evolution. Furthermore, the travel time and distance is plotted to analyze the variation of velocity. Finally, the double difference tomography (TomoDD) algorithm using arrival time is adopted to recalculate the locations of seismic events and velocity structure in each regime. The results indicate that the passive seismic system can map the caprock stress distribution and allow for imaging of the caprock integrity. TomoDD exhibits sound improvements to relocate seismic events both in relative and absolute locations as well as to characterize the local velocity structure. The study further reveals that seismic monitoring along with TomoDD could evaluate the caprock failure accurately in the CCS.Introduction To reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) has been suggested to as a means of continuing to use fossil fuel resources while offsetting their negative environmental impacts (Eiken et al 2011). A positive CCS project should retain 99% of the injected supercritical CO2 (pressure is greater than 7.38 MPa and temperature is above 31.04? and a density is of about 700 kg/m3) over at least 100 years (Davidson et al 2005). As large quantities of supercritical carbon dioxide are being injected into full scale storage projects, caprock stress is redistributing and the leakage could occur anywhere over a wide storage area (Hou et al 2012). Acoustic waves are emitted from the caprock, as it fractures due to the CO2 injection, which can be detected by passive seismic sensors (Shitashima et al 2013). Tomography techniques are advantageous for imaging the integrity of the caprock in the CCS projects. Velocity tomography uses waves to model entities based on the arrival time of waves (Westman et al 2001, Westman 2004, Luxbacher et al 2008). Seismic tomography is a data inference technique that exploits information contained in seismic records to constrain 2D or 3D models of the Earth's interior. It generally requires the solution of a large inverse problem to obtain a heterogeneous seismic model that is consistent with field observations (Kudryavtsev et al 2012)."

Introduction There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices . •The time value of invested money was not considered to be important under these "stable" prices, and inflation was assumed to be nonexistent in the planned economy. •An overestimation of the value of social and economic factors such as keeping the local population employed and providing the country with strategic minerals biased the economic evaluations of projects. Sequence of exploration Geological exploration in the CIS countries typically includes two major phases: prospecting and exploration. Prospecting consists of the following: •Regional geological studies. •General prospecting. •Prospecting. •Prospect evaluation. Regional geological studies are conducted within large territories and utilize satellite images, deep seismic zoning and other state-of-the-art methods. Geological and geophysical maps on a scale of from 1:200000 to 1:1000000 are developed to help identify regional anomalies and mineral prospective areas. The areas of primary interest are then subjected to general prospecting, beginning with geological mapping of the area at 1:50000 (1:25000) scale. The prospecting phase determines mineral potential based on further geological mapping (mostly 1:10000 scale), surface geophysics and geochemistry. Finally, the most attractive targets are subjected to further detailed evaluation (prospect evaluation) to help identify "possible" projects by means of trenching and wide-spaced drilling. The results of the prospect evaluation are analyzed and conclusions regarding the economical potential of the project are drawn. If the initial-prospecting phase results are positive and the prospect is recognized as economical, it then moves into preliminary exploration, which is followed by detailed exploration. Preliminary exploration determines the feasibility of the project on the basis of limited data. For example, in some underground projects, the initial exploration drilling and tunneling is done at two or three times wider spacing than would be required by the assumed mining method. Detailed exploration focuses on preparing the project for mining development, such as completing drilling and tunneling, particularly in the portion of the ore body to be first mined. During the project's mining phase, further exploration is usually conducted along the flanks of the mineralized structures and deeper sections of the ore body. Finally, during exploitation, it is sometimes necessary to delineate the ore body within the mining-block limits. A comparison between the United States (US) sequence of exploration activities and the CIS system is given in the Table 1. There is no "additional" and "exploitation" exploration shown in the US system, but it is common knowledge that all mineral projects are subjected to "additional" and "exploitation" exploration while being mined. INTRODUCTION Mining of uranium does not differ, in many respects, from the mining of other metals; the ore must be drilled, blasted and transported in an underground or surface mine. Underground mining proceeds by the continuous development and advancement of a network of passages and rooms or stopes from which ore is excavated. As in most mines, rock conditions and ore grades in uranium deposits vary from area to area and between different mines. For mineral benefications of this ore in the mills, use is made of various chemicals, often with toxic or hazardous properties.1 As well as the need to control the more conventional hazards associated with any mining and milling operation, special care needs to be exercised in the mining and milling of uranium because of the radioactive nature of the ore. This requires that we examine closely the radiation hazard areas encountered in the mining and milling of uranium, with the broad overview of some of the basic facts in the radiation hazard control programme. To place the hazard in its proper perspective, we require recognition, evaluation and control of those factors arising in and from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health and affect the well being among workers or citizens of the community. The radiation environment in uranium mine is complex and variable. Although uranium ore is only mildly radioactive, it naturally contains a complex mixture of radioactive isotopes. Workers are exposed to external gamma radiation, to some beta radiation and to airborne radon, radon daughters and ore dust. All of these types of exposures warrant considerations in formulating control procedures but, in general, radon daughters are known to present the dominant risk. The basis of dose limitation in radiological protection is risk limitation. Long-term epidemiologic studies of United States uranium miners and that of miners in Czechoslovakia indicate that the incidence of lung cancer can be accounted for by a linear relationship with exposure to radon decay products.2 On the basis of this proportional exposure-risk relationship, a risk coefficient for lung cancer in the range of 1-5.10-4 WLM-1 during the total lifetime, has been estimated by UNSCEAR3 and other researchers. It should be noted that this risk coefficient includes the excess lung cancer risk from external gamma radiation in mines and from other carcinogenic chemical effects, if any, to which the miners are normally exposed during their underground work. It also takes into regard the possible synergistic influences. This paper reviews the occurrence of radiation and its control factors and the development of engineering design features for the environmental control at Denison Mine. NATURAL URANIUM SERIES Uranium is the most common element in the Earth's crust. It is widely distributed in nature in all rocks and is readily measurable in the sea. Hence, radon gas is universally produced in every part of the globe. Mining is patently confined to ores containing more than half a kilogram, or so, per tonne of uranium unless it is combined with other marketable metals. Uranium-238 is the first element in the uranium series. In all, there are 13 radioactive decay products of 238U (Fig. 1), ending up as a stable isotope of Lead-206. The whole basis of the radiological hazards associated with the mining and milling of uranium is dependent on the behaviour of these isotopes during each phase of the process.

INTRODUCTION Production of chrysotile asbestos from the northern Appalachians has been going on for 100 years and, on the basis of known reserves and the present rates of mining, appears assured of continued production for at least another 25 to 30 years. In spite of this, mining companies and government agencies are showing an increasing interest in exploring for chrysotile asbestos throughout this region and elsewhere in the world, implying that increases in the rate of consumption are envisioned. This chapter describes the geologic and tectonic settings surrounding these important chrysotile deposits, with emphasis on those in southern Quebec that yield about 90% of the total production from the northern Appala- chians. Detailed descriptions of a few individual deposits are also given, along with exploration guidelines aimed at facilitating the discovery of additional chrysotile deposits. One section of this chapter deals with the origin and mode of formation of the chrysotile deposits in the light of modern day concepts of plate tectonics. The objectives of this chapter are to give a brief description of the geologic and tectonic settings of the ultramafic rocks in which the numerous chrysotile deposits of the northern Appalachians are found; to describe a few of the individual deposits; to give a few exploration guidelines for those interested in exploring for new asbestos deposits in similar geologic environments; and to propose a new model for asbestos genesis in light of the recently developed theories of global tectonics. As this chapter is based almost entirely on field and laboratory observations, rather than on the study of experimental laboratory models, most of our deductions and suggestions are empirical in nature and may be interpreted in more than one way. The interpretations we have selected seem to offer, we feel, the best explanation of observed geological phenomena (Lamarche and Wicks, 1975). This region had a production capability in 1979 of close to p.5 Mt of chrysotile asbestos with 92% of this tonnage being derived from the deposits of the Eastern Townships of Quebec. With known resources, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fibers, this production capability seems assured for the next few decades. In spite of all known reserves of chrysotile asbestos, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fiber in this region alone, mining companies and government agencies are still showing a good deal of interest in exploring for new sources throughout the world. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The asbestos deposits at Baie Verte in eastern Newfoundland, Thetford Mines, Black Lake, Asbestos in southern Quebec, and Belvidere Mountain in Vermont, all occur in partly serpentinized ultramafic rocks that are part of the Lower Paleozoic ophiolite complexes of the northern Appalachians [Cady, Albee, Chidester, 1963, Chidester, Albee, Cady, 1978, Lamarche, 1972,1973, Laurent, 1973,1975, Williams, Hibbard, Bursnall, 1977, Norman and Strong, 1975). The deposits to the northeast of Thetford Mines, on the other hand, are found in a more highly serpentinized ultramafic body known as the Pennington dike, whose spatial, genetic, and chronological links with the ophiolite masses proper have not as yet been adequately resolved. The Appalachian ophiolites are part of an ultramafic belt (or belts), that extends from northwestern Newfoundland, through Quebec and Vermont. Fig. 1, and southwestward as far as the

INTRODUCTION The attempt to interprete lung cancer incidence caused by inhaled radon decay products in items of radiation dose raises the question of the relevant dose. The various dosimetric approaches published by now are characterized by an increasing complexity in the structure of the models used. Ranging from organ doses to microdosimetric specific energy distributions in the cells at risk, a significant trend from the macroscopic to the microscopic scale can be observed. Since tumors originate preferentially in the basal cells of the lobar and segmental bronchial epithelium, these cells are regarded as the critical target for inhalation carcinogenesis. The evaluation of basal cell doses is, therefore, the main objective of lung dose assessments. Various dosimetric models have been published in the past (Altshuler, Nelson and Kuschner, 1964; Haque and Collinson, 1967; Harley and Pasternack, 1972; Hofmann, Steinhäusler and Pohl, 1979, 1980; Jacobi, 1964; Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James , Greenhalge and Birchall, 1980). Due to incertainties of physical and biological parameters involved and the application of different anatomical and physiological models the claculated doses are varying up to one order of mangitude. Independent of the choice of these dosimetric models applied to the calculation of lung doses, deposition, clearance and resulting dose are affected essentially by the properties of the inhaled aerosol as well as by personal characteristics. Both the properties of the exposed individual as well as of the inhaled environmental atmosphere have to be considered in radiation protection. It is the main objective of this paper to illustrate the influence of both parameter sets on basal cell doses by varying the above parameters. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Though it might be more convenient for radiation protection calculations, the biological "man" cannot be represented by a uniform standard man. In Tab. 1 these personal characteristics which cause the variability of man are listed together with the region of their effectiveness. In the following the influence of these parameters will be discussed with regard to lung dose assessments. Besides these factors the great biological variability of all anatomical and physiological parameters involved as well as pathological alterations due to lung diseases cause additional variations in lung dosimetry. [ ] Age Age can be considered as the most important personal factor influencing the anatomical structure of the lung between birth and about 15 years of life. This period is characterized not only by an enlargement of already existing respiratory units but also by structural changes. Besides these anatomical alterations deposition is strongly dependent also on respiration parameters, such as tidal volume (TV) and respiratory frequency (RF). Whereas RF decreases with progressing age in an exponential manner, TV increases significantly resulting finally in a growth of the respiratory minute volume (RMV). Also mucus clearance in the infant might be more effective than in the adult, though no reliable experimental data are available. Superposing all these age-dependent changes mean basal cell doses are higher for children by about a factor of 2 than for adults living in the same radioactive environment (Hofmann, 1981). In the adult the following alterations of respiration standards with age are reported: total lung capacity diminishes with age, functional residual capacity is unchanged or increases with age and the dead space rises slightly with age (ICRP, 1975). The influence of these lung capacities on deposition, however, can be regarded as insignificant. Due to the ageing process mucus velocities my be considerably smaller in older people. This effect can also be superposed by the simultaneous influence of ciliatoxic effects of cigarette smoke and air pollutants or other bronchial diseases. Since the lower age limit for occupational exposure is about 18 years, age can be disregarded in the uranium mining industry for the determination of radiation doses, though lung cancer induction is significantly dependent on age.

INTRODUCTION Some of the most famous and graphic environmental incidents have arisen from mineral extraction, including oil spills, the Reserve Mining asbestos tailings case, Kaiparowitts surface mining and coal combustion, and other environmental causes celebre. The remote location of much of the mining industry to some extent reduces the human health hazards from pollution, but often times the pristine locale in which mining is conducted provides a sharp contrast to the impacting industry. This prompts questions as to what the research literature says about the true costs and benefits of environmental compliance. We survey the state of this knowledge. Where possible, we discuss studies focused on mining and related industries, such as primary metals production. In many cases, how- ever, the studies pertain to the economy as a whole. For present purposes, the mining industry is defined as companies engaged in the production and refinement of minerals, including metals, fuels, and nonmetallics (e.g., phosphate, sand and gravel). There are several stages in mining, with environmental effects occuring at every stage. The exploration stage comprises the period from initial prospecting to the point where the deposit has been located and delineated in sufficient detail to permit development decisions to be made. Geophysical and geochemical surveys, diamond drilling programs, and exploratory stripping and excavation are activities that may be employed during this stage. Some forms of prospecting are relatively benign, al- though even airborne surveys and motor vehicles generate noise pollution. Roads and the passage of vehicles and equipment affect land surfaces and vegetation, and attract heavier backcountry use. Clearings, stream crossings, and borrow pits can lead to increased erosion and sedimentation of streams. Geological survey grids disrupt vegetation and appearance. Moreover, prospecting can involve the excavation and stripping of overburden, resulting in soil and vegetation disruption as well as in- creased sedimentation of streams and lakes. The effects of exploration are often temporary, and frequently less severe than for other activities. Nevertheless, exploration-related impacts vary with the intensity and type of exploration effort, and can be significant. During the development stage of mining, shafts are sunk, pits excavated, buildings erected, and transportation facilities established. Dust, noise, and other socioeconomic and environmental impacts are generated by the relatively large and sudden influx of people, equipment, and activity. Surface disturbance and solid waste are generated by development, and liquid wastes form when mines are dewatered. The extraction phase is associated with a variety of environmental impacts. These impacts may differ for surface and underground mines. In surface mining, surface disturbance is obviously a major consequence. Piles of overburden and waste accumulation mar land surfaces. Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

INTRODUCTION According to a recent analysis by Schiager et al.(1981), inhalation of radon daughters continues to contribute the largest risk from exposure to radioactive materials in underground uranium mines. The American National Standards Institute (1973) has published a concensus standard for radiation protection in uranium mines. According to this standard, a monitoring system for radon daughters must be capable of measuring the annual accumulated exposure in working level months within an uncertainty interval of 50% at the 95% confidence level. To satisfy this criterion, uranium mining companies in the USA have adopted a procedure consisting of single or periodic measurements of the air concentration of radon daughters. All of the measurement methods sample a known volume of air through a filter. After a specified delay interval, the filter is analyzed for radioactivity. The exposure rate from total airborne potential alpha energy in units of working level (WL) is estimated from the measured activity on the filter. For control purposes, this measurement establishes whether or not a work area is safe for occupancy by miners. For routine dosimetry, the concentration estimated from the grab sample is assigned to the appropriate work area. It is then assumed that the concentration of radon progeny is equal to the average of the two measurements at the beginning and end of the specified interval. Meanwhile, the work locations and exposure times of each miner are recorded on the daily time card and verified by the shift supervisor. Most cards provide space for 15-minute time intervals. The exposure in working-level hours (WL-hr) for each shift is obtained by summing the time spent in a given location multiplied by the exposure rate (WL) assigned to that location.The exposure of an individual miner to radon progeny is summarized on a weekly basis and commonly reviewed each month. These values are then accumulated in units of working level- months (WLM) during the calendar year. EVALUATION TECHNIQUE AND RESULTS The evaluation of grab sampling methods for monitoring exposure to radon progeny is presented in two sections. The first section examines each method individually according to accuracy, precision, and uncertainties attributed to human errors. The second section includes an analysis of procedures which are common to all measurement methods. The ultimate goal is to determine whether a specific measurement method, or grab sampling in general, can fulfill the criterion that the annual accumulated exposure of each miner be known to within ± 50% at the 95% confidence level. In addition it is essential that the above criterion be satisfied at an acceptable cost to the mining company. The results of each testing procedure are presented in terms of the contribution of the relative uncertainty in the estimates of cumulative WLM. Each of these are then combined to form a figure of merit for the complete monitoring system. The method of combining statistical uncertainties and interpretation of the results is subject to some debate. However, since all of the tested parameters enter into the final computation of WLM multiplicatively, we have used the commonly accepted procedure of combining the squares of the relative uncertainties. We have also assumed that each of the uncertainties is derived from independent random variables and the covariance of any two variables is zero. A description of each grab sampling measuring method is given in Table 1. Also included is the equation used to compute WL from the measured quantities. Accuracy (U A) Our definition of accuracy is based on the uncertainty inherent in any method which attempts to estimate potential alpha energy without unambiguously determining the concentration of the three unknown radioisotopes, RaA, RaB and RaC. (For simplicity, the RaC and RaC' nuclides are referred to in combination as RaC.) The inherent uncertainty strongly depends on the mixture of these three components at the time of measurement.

INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Froth flotation is a physico-chemical process for separating finely ground minerals from their associated gangue material. The process involves chemical treatment of a finely divided (ground) ore in a water pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain of the mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles then carry the selected minerals, called valuable, to the surface of the pulp to form a stabilized froth which is removed and recovered. The unattached gangue material remains submerged in the pulp and is either discarded or reprocessed. To obtain the adherence of the desired mineral particles to the air bubbles, at least two specific steps must occur: a hydrophobic (water hating) surface film must be formed on the particles to be floated along with a hydrophillic (water wetting) film on all other particles; and a controlled bubble surface tension interface must be maintained, allowing for high particlelbubble collision frequency and efficient attachment or sticking of the particle to the bubble once collision has taken place. In most flotation applications, the above two steps are controlled by chemical flotation reagents. The collector is a chemical reagent which produces the hydrophobic film on the valuable mineral particle and is the primary driving force that initiates the flotation process. The frother is a chemical reagent which influences the collision frequency and attachment efficiency of hydrophobic particles and air bubbles. Thousands of research papers and books have been published on the chemical theory behind sulfide mineral collectors, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Fuerstenau, et. al. (1985), King (1982), Leja (1982) and Moudgil and Somasundaran (1987), This article will only address and summarize some of the more practical aspects of collector usage. The industrial scale practice of froth flotation in sulfide mineral concentration has changed little since the 1950's. For example, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of sulfide mineral collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. A very interesting and informative history of collector development has been given by Crozier (1984). In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years. As a result of the above environment which makes reagent cost/performance analysis difficult for new reagents, there is a strong tendency for the flotation operation to use, and reagent companies to supply, as cheap as possible raw materials and manufactured products that are quite general in application. In the last 20 years or so, there has been increasing technical effort to tailor make reagents for specific applications, but to date such work has had little commercial impact. It is clearly the hope of this author and others that this situation will change in future years as technology improves and pressure for improved flotation performance intensifies. This article is a condensation of collector usage trends quantified as part of a comprehensive industrially oriented applications program on froth flotation organized by Klimpel and coworkers (1979-1987) and as reported in various countries that participated in the program from 1978-1983. Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. Appalachian coalfield production declined 1.4% from 1981 output and 3.9% from 1980 output. The interior region of the US showed an increase of 7.8% in production. This was primarily because of a

Introduction The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of such scale is: "A hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water." The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem. The problem of scale in carbon strip circuits Carbon strip circuits present a particularly challenging scale inhibition problem. Many of the factors that tend to promote scaling are present in these systems. For example, carbon strip circuits are run at high temperatures and high pH levels and require long batch cycle times. Tortuous paths are encountered by the strip solution circulating through heat exchangers, pipes and elbows, causing transient pressure drops throughout the system. Severe conditions such as these cause the water to possess a high scaling potential and may lead to the breakdown of some of common types of scale inhibitors. Formation of scale Natural waters contain dissolved minerals and gases that promote scaling. One of the contained gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), is an important factor in scale deposition. Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to yield carbonic acid according to the following reaction: [CO2 + H2O - H2CO3 (carbonic acid)] Carbonic acid rapidly dissociates to yield bicarbonate and carbonate ions depending on the pH of the system: [H2CO3 -s H+ + HCO-3 (pH range 6-10) HCO3 -a H+ + COO (pH range > 9)] In gold cyanidation processes, lime is added to raise the pH of the mill solution to 10 or above to promote cyanidation of the gold and to eliminate the possibility of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) formation. Lime contributes both hydroxyl ions (OH--) and calcium ions (Ca++) to the solution. The normal scale forming reactions in mill water systems were described by Beasley (1973) as: [HCO-3 + OH -s C03 + H2O Ca++ + C03 -a CaCO3] Factor affecting scale deposition According to Linke's (1958) solubility tables, the solubility of calcium carbonate in carbon-dioxide free water is only 13 mg/dm3 (13 mg/L) at 25° C (77° F). Scale deposition occurs when the concentration of calcium and carbonate ions in the solution exceeds the solubility of calcium carbonate. This occurs, in most cases, when the water has undergone some chemical or physical change. Some typical changes that might occur that lead to scale deposition are discussed below. Temperature An increase in temperature can greatly increase the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Studies by Miller (1952) have indicated that calcium carbonate is less soluble at higher temperatures. Hence, high temperatures promote scaling. For this reason, scale is often noticed on heat exchangers, autoclaves and other high temperature surfaces. Pressure A decrease in pressure may lead to an increase in the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Fulford's (1967) work has shown that scale is more soluble at high pressures. Hence, scale is likely to be prevalent in pump suction lines, elbows, baffles and other areas that produce turbulence and subsequent pressure drops. Change in pH Calcium carbonate scale is pH dependent and tends to form more readily at high pH. Any event that causes an increase in pH, such as the introduction of lime or caustic, would tend to initiate scale formation. Since most gold recovery operations are run at a pH above 10, the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale is always great. The use of scale inhibitors to prevent calcium carbonate scale Many products are commercially available to inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate scale. Some of the more effective types include phosphonates, as well as acrylate and maleate-based polymers and copolymers. Many of these products function by means of threshold

Metal production has traditionally been a cyclical industry. 1977 in the base metals industry has highlighted that fact with a steady decline in the market place for base metals. Corporate aggregate planning is based on good forecasting and when changing conditions make that forecasting inaccurate, alternate analysis of schedules must be accomplished quickly. The computer is the only medium powerful enough to answer management's questions within an acceptable time frame. Worldwide communications networks now make it possible for the many multinational mining companies to arrive at coordinated corporate production plans based on similar basic data from several producing divisions. The Ontario Div. of Inco Metals Co., a unit of Inco Ltd., encompassed during 1977 14 producing mines, 2 nonproducing mines, 1 nonproducing open pit, 5 flotation mills, I smelter, 2 nickel refineries, 1 copper refinery, and an iron ore recovery plant. Several new mines are under development. Mine production approximates 63 500 tpd (70,000 stpd) from some 1000 workplaces. The need for longrange mine planning and scheduling is obvious and until recently has been satisfied by manual methods. However, while manual methods are often quite practical for a small number of mines, or for mines with relatively short lives, or for mines with only one mining method, the situation in the Ontario Div. is too complex and long-term to allow effective, timely planning by such methods. In 1967, a year after the first computer was installed in the division, work was begun on the computerization of the more than 30,000 borehole logs kept in the mines exploration files with a view to speeding up the assessment of mineral resources. Also in 1967 one of the first substantial systems developed on the main business systems computer was the monthly scheduling of development and production for all mines. This system encompassed tons productions per workplace, feet development per workplace, auxiliary and service activities and the requisite labor for each of these. These two dates are mentioned to show that concurrently with the acquisition of computers in the division there was an early understanding of the importance of automating mine scheduling and planning and of the potential for effective and useful computerization of such activities. In 1970, a pilot program was developed in one of the mines containing a large number of workplaces (350) to schedule the production on a network basis. Varying degrees of interest were shown by the individual mine engineers based on the complexity of the production planning problem at each mine. In an evolutionary process, mines were added to the system as its value became obvious in terms of time saving, flexibility, and accuracy. In 1975, the central mine engineering department decided that the system should be extended to all mines so that a complete division-wide long-range scheduling system would be available upon which to base development and production planning. This system would use basic ore data, allow the addition of scheduling commands, and calculate a schedule for the life of the mine. Many reports could be produced for each mine and all-mine summaries would also be available. The significance of the system can be stated in one phrase-speed, accuracy, and flexibility. Whereas in the past a long-range all mines schedule might have been done once a year, taking from two to three months, now it can be done in a day. The chief mines engineer can incorporate changes in input data and external constraints and call for a "new look" at the long-range schedule to assist him and mines production management in their decision-making processes. Using previous manual methods this could not be done quickly enough to be useful.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes operational procedures and instrumentation which were developed to implement a patented method of detecting and locating uranium ore bodies. All equipment was designed for accurate and reliable use under difficult field conditions. Data resulting from these developments, some of which are incorporated in a companion paper for this conference*, have contributed to our understanding, of the nature and significance of naturally-occurring radon exposures. Further applications of these techniques may prove useful in studying anthropogenic radon in evaluating the significance of variability in radon flux, or in taking proper account of the contribution of natural radon to ambient radon concentrations, particularly in mineralized regions. OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES The uranium search technique employed by GEOMET begins with a [reconnaissance mode], which utilizes a series of ambient air filter samples taken from a moving or standing vehicle to detect anamalous concentrations of radon. These samples are normally taken at night under stable (temperature inversion) or neutral atmospheric conditions, to avoid the rapid dispersion of the radon clouds typical of daytime turbulent conditions. Radon daughters formed by the decay of radon quickly attach to ambient aerosol particles and are captured on the surface of a membrane filter during a five-minute sampling period. The filter is placed in a portable alpha scintillation counter, and a five-minute count is started at a preset time after the completion of the sampling period. This count is followed immediately by a second five-minute count to enable determination of the cloud age, based on consideration of the relative half-lives of the initial radon daughters. With the use of tables computed from the mathematics of the uranium decay process, and with the measured radon background accounted for, the first and second counts are used to estimate the time which has elapsed since the pure radon initially emanated from the earth's surface. This cloud age, combined with wind speed and direction measurements made at the beginning and end of each sample, as well as with an understanding of the effects of local terrain features on wind trajectory, provides an estimate of the Probable location of the source. In practice the reconnaissance mode involves one vehicle with a single operator to take the five-minute samples, moving or standing, along any available roads or trails in the area to be covered. Under the usual nighttime stable conditions the cool air flows downslope and downvalley, and the operator will pay special attention to locations along the axes and confluences of the natural downflow patterns. These facilitate sampling of large air drainage areas. Successful detection of sources of radon based on high concentrations of radon daughters, and substantiated by evidence of "fresh" clouds, are frequently made on the basis of a relatively few samples taken judiciously by an experienced operator during a reconnaissance. At this point he has a choice: he can continue to cover the designated reconnaissance area, leaving the localization of any anomalous radon detections to await the ranking of detections by priority, or he can continue with localization of the detected source, either alone or by radioing for another vehicle to assist in triangulation operations. Localization of a source involves skillful and experienced use of the continuously collected data on concentration, age, and wind speed and direction, together with knowledge of the terrain from observation and contour maps, and exploitation of the available roads. Since age ratios are dependent solely on proximity of the source and wind speed, decreasing [cloud ages] based on statistically significant increasing age ratios represent the most useful. information in localization. The [magnitude of the concentration] of radon daughter products is also useful; however, it may vary widely for a variety of reasons during sampling for a localization, thus making this a secondary parameter for localization. Large values of concentration are of course useful; typical results for successful detection of a strong anomaly would yield alpha counts ranging from 10 to 25 times background values. These counts are convertible to ambient radon concentrations by appropriate consideration of the decay process. Successful localizations of radon sources using this procedure with ambient atmospheric measurements normally will narrow a source location to within an area ranging in size from less than a quarter of a square mile to at most a square mile, and frequently give information on the probable shape of the source (in plan view) on the earth's surface. Judicious use of this procedure could undoubtedly provide finer localization, but the coarser results just described are adequate for this Phase of GEOMET's uranium exploration procedures.
