Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. High groundwater levels combined with variable soil and rock profiles present challenges to the design and construction of deep excavation support systems. Increasingly, secant piling techniques are the preferred technical solution for shoring in these cases. Recent developments in drilling equipment, tooling and procedures allow cost-effective construction of deep, overlapped pile systems to tight tolerances in extremely difficult ground conditions. This paper summarizes critical design considerations for secant pile shoring systems, detailing recent advances in installation procedures and verification techniques that allow secant piles to be used for an expanding range of project conditions. Technically- and commercially-viable secant pile shoring designs require that stringent drilling tolerances be achieved in order to successfully provide combined structural support and groundwater cutoff systems, particularly for unreinforced circular secant pile shafts acting in ring compression. Modern drill rigs and tooling can advance fully cased shafts in geotechnical conditions which range from cohesionless soils below the groundwater table to hard rock, within a single drillhole. Down-hole instrumentation provides verification that tolerance requirements are met and allow secant pile shoring to be used at sites previously considered unacceptably risky. In California, secant pile shoring systems are being used for excavation depths of over 100 ft (30 m) on projects with challenging site conditions. Two case studies are presented detailing severe geotechnical conditions and excavation depths which represent the regional state of practice in secant piled excavation support. These projects provide real world examples of the design, construction and construction verification techniques that permit secant pile shoring to be used in more demanding geotechnical conditions and to greater depths than ever before.

THE object of the air-tight stopping is either to prevent a current of fresh air from getting into the fire area, or to prevent an escape of fumes and gases from the fire area into the workings of the mine. In the former case all is "plain sailing," but in the latter case there are certain difficulties to be overcome.In the Broken Hill Proprietary mine there were two styles of stopping used during the last fire-brick and bag and the following were the chief points that determined the use of one in preference to the other:-If the required stopping were to be more or less permanent, bricks were used, also if the area to be blocked were large-bricks being so much lighter and easier to handle than bags filled with -skimps. If, however, the air contained much gas, a bag stopping was put up. Great difficulty was experienced in getting essentially surface men, such as bricklayers, to work where there was the; slightest trace of gas; miners, however, would willingly do the work, and a bag stopping could be built without skilled labour.In old drives and gangways, where there was the liability of settlement, the bag stoppings were preferable to brick. The slightest movement around the sides or foundations of the latter would cause cracks, thus rendering the brick stopping useless;whereas, in the former, there was a certain amount of elasticity.

Background: A cross-sectional study was conducted in November2001 to establish the prevalence rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea) in a coalmining town in Mpumalanga. Methods: 155 adults were recruited (79 males and 76 females), by holding community meetings, and by door-to-door recruitment. Saliva and urine specimens were collected for the analysis of HIV and STI prevalence, respectively. Results: The mean age for males was 31.35 years (min = 19 yrs and max = 50 yrs) and the mean age of the female participants was31.90 years (min = 17 yrs, max = 49 yrs). The prevalence of HIV was found to be 22.78% [95% CI (14.09?33.59)] in the males vs. 47.37%[95% CI (35.79?55.16)] in the females, [p = 0.001, OR = 3.05, 95%CI(1.49?6.26)]. The prevalence of C. trachomatis was 7.90% [95% CI(2.95?16.39)] in the males vs. 12.86% [95% CI (6.05?23.00)] in the females, p = 0.324. The prevalence of N. gonorrhoea was 3.79%[95% CI (0.79?1.08)] in the males vs. 9.86% [95% CI (4.06?19.26)]in the females, p = 0.137. HIV was significantly associated with C. trachomatis, [p = 0.032, OR = 3.18, 95% CI (1.04?9.72)], but was not significant when stratified by gender. HIV was not significantly associated with N. gonorrhoea (p = 0.072) but it was significantly associated when stratified by gender, p = 0.001 for females. There were no significant associations between HIV and age (p = 0.408), even upon stratification by gender. Conclusions: HIV prevalence in this community is high, and corresponds to national figures. However, the prevalence of STIs is surprisingly low as it would be expected to be high in a migrant population. Although communities are exposed to expanding peer-education activities that encourage behaviour change, the prevalence of HIV in this group. The mining industry occasionally blasts near pressurized transmission pipelines and has requested guidance of safe vibration levels and setback distances. the Bureau of Mines and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources cooperated with AMAX Coal Company on a study of coal mine overburden blasting. Five buried and pressurized 250-ft pipeline sections were specifically installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN for testing to failure. Four welded steel pipes ranging from 6- to 20- in diameter and one 8- PVC water supply pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and internal pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale blasting representing construction activities, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 2100 lb per delay in 12-l/4-in diameter holes.

The design philosophies for piles in unfrozen and frozen soils are compared, and their similarities and differences are underlined. It is shown that in frozen soils, the long term behavior of a pile is difficult to predict, because of inadequate knowledge on the behavior of adfreeze bond with time, and on the value and variation of the lateral normal stress acting on the pile. Both of these problems are discussed in the paper on the basis of laboratory tests and theoretical analyses.

Mientras que el segundo aspecto,muestra las causasdel déficit (causas mecánicas, temperatura, composición de la mena), en la planta de Lixiviación N. 2 de la Vanadium Corporation of America en Jumasha, Cerro de Pasco. Para ello, se propone aplicar el tostado clorurante, seguido de una lixiviación con ácido sulfúrico en hornos de reverbero, que mantenga una recuperación aceptable y permita una mejor producción del metal.

Some crystal chemical properties of several apatites from Brazilian deposits and occurrences were determined; the samples had different origins (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary). The aim was to establish relationships to their froth flotabilities behaviour. Detailed X-ray diffraction studies were carried out, to determine precisely the unit cell parameters and the degrees of crystallinity of the apatite samples. A thorough chemical analysis of these minerals was also conducted. Microflotation studies were carried out, using sodium oleate and dodecylammonium chloride as collectors. The crystallinity levels were determined for all samples studied, with the establishment of a crystallinity index, which varied from 10.0 to 4.5, on a normalised scale. A marked dependence was observed between this crystallinity sequence and flotability; for both collectors, flotability dropped drastically for crystallinity indices lower than 8.0. Also, the low crystallinity apatites showed a decrease in floatability, for longer conditioning times.

The authors consider the features and advantages of a new promising trend in mineral processing - column flotation. Design aerohydrodynamic and process characteristics of pilot-scale columns are studied. Optimum process parameters for various ores and operations are studied. Flow patterns in cells of various cross-sections are investigated and the relationship between Peclet criterion and specific capacity of cell is determined. On this basis options were developed for optimisation of hydrodynamic characteristics of large capacity cells, including longitudinal sectionalising of the collection zone. It is shown that advantages of high column cells (10 - 13 m) produced in the West can be implemented in a sectionalised machine of smaller height (5 - 6 m). Investigations on the influence of slurry and air bubbles flow patterns indicated that to increase flotation rate of particles of various flotabilities it is expedient to combine co- and counter-current flows of phases in a single column. The proposed designs allow tailings to repeatedly return tailings to the collection zone and alternate co- and counter-current slurry and air flows. For the first time columns with alternating slurry flows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) are developed and commercialised. Unique multi-sectional cells having a number of essential advantages compared to monocells are developed. Design features of the cell allow: implementation of different flotation process flowsheets in a single unit, improved beneficiation process results, reduced specific power requirement, and elimination of sludging of the aerator and cell bottom part. Operational problems restricting introduction of column cells are connected with the aeration unit. The new cells are supplied with pneumohydraulic and stepped airlift spargers, allowing control of bubble size distribution with a service life of not less than three years. Successful operation of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 15, 25, 40, and 80 cu m and the height of 5 - 6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants in this country illustrated their considerable process and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. A simulation technique of the flotation process and models for the solution of various problems are developed. A modular model of column flotation is constructed taking into account the kinetic relationship of the process and the hydrodynamic regime in the cell. Based on this, a technique of calculating the column parameters based on laboratory tests is developed (scaling-up), and applied for calculating the design of commercial-scale columns is developed.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

"The development of high capacity adsorbents with uniform porosity denoted, MP-HMS (Mercaptopropyl – Hexagonal Mesoporous Structure) using nanotechnology, and their ability to extract gold from solution, is presented. The preparation of highly effective heavy metal ion adsorbents by the incorporation of thiol moieties into the pore channels of mesoporous silica molecular sieves has been the subject of many nanotechnology research investigations. The unique feature of these nanoporous adsorbents is their ability to adsorb gold ions from ultra-low concentration solutions like mine effluent as well as from leached solutions in gold mills. The preliminary studies from laboratory simulated gold solutions show that the adsorption capacities of these materials are also among the highest reported. MP-HMS has shown the capability to adsorb 370 mg gold per one gram of the nanomaterials from Tetrachloroaurate solution (up to 37% of their weight). Experimental studies indicated that the maximum adsorption of gold (as high as 99.9% recovery). The current studies will be extended to investigate the interaction of ionic gold complexes with nanomaterials. Future development of this work may lead to either to replace the conventional CIP/CIL processes or use nanomaterials in tandem with the former, suggesting plausible use of mesoporous material in pulp, MIP or in leach, MIL, as a novel gold extraction process.INTRODUCTIONGold typically occurs at very low concentrations in ores less than 10 g/t or 0.001% (mass basis). At these concentrations the use of aqueous chemical (hydrometallurgical) extraction processes is the only economically viable method of extracting the gold from the ore. Typical hydrometallurgical gold recovery involves a leaching step followed by the separation of the gold bearing solution from the residues, or adsorption of the gold onto activated carbon adsorbent. After elution from the activated carbon the gold is further concentrated by precipitation or electrodeposition."

This paper presents the results of a study using computer human modeling to examine machine appendage speed. The objective was to determine the impact of roof bolter machine appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator coming in contact with. A contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., appendage makes contact with the operator?s hand, arm, head or leg. Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem and laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. As an alternative, researchers developed a computer model approach as the primary means to gather data. By simulating an operator?s random behavior and machine?s appendage velocity, researchers can study potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Analysis information is helpful to the mining industry in terms of making recommendations that reduce the likelihood that roof-bolter operators experience injury due to contact with a moving boom. Data analysis of roof bolter simulations show that the virtual-operator?s response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. Based on frequency and cross-tabulation, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, were always greater on the palm, and were always greater for the boom part of the machine. Also, regardless of boom speed, the 25th-percentile-sized operators experienced more contacts than did other operator sizes. Furthermore, regardless of boom speed, the 152-cm mine seam experienced more contacts than did other seam heights tested. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Based on the data collected, boom speed greater than 41 cm/s results in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator and should probably be avoided. At speeds less than or equal to 25 cm/s are associated with a more modest relative risk, which represents an acceptable level of risk. Also, at speeds between 25 and 41 cm/s, there could be a particular boom speed in this range at which a significant inflection point in the relative risk estimates occurs. Based on the results, this issue needs to be addressed by future research.

IN the underground department of a mine, we may fairly say that "good management is based upon three elementals: first, sound engineering; second, proper coordination and efficiency of every human unit; third, economy in the purchase and consumption: of supplies.This paper is practically an analysis of the second element; which stands out prominently as the most important in the winning of successful results. The human units are divided into officers and men. The officers intermesh. One man takes responsibility where another throws it down; incessantly new conditions are arising where they may be doubtful of their powers; and always, on account of the three shifts, varying methods of work are coming into conflict. This very often results in disorganization. What is most necessary to guard against this is an esprit de corps, which would influence officers to stifle personal feelings for the general welfare of the department, To secure co-operation and loyalty of the staff, the writer recommends for the mines of the field a system of profit-sharing. Distributed on a salary basis, together with liberal holidays (not less than three weeks in each year) on full pay...

"The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior for the promotion of safety in mines and quarries, has just been closed for seventeenth consecutive year. Enrollment covered more plants than in any previous contest. Moreover, a larger volume of employment was represented than in the contests of previous years, and several new plants were enrolled for the first time. Six safety trophies are awarded annually in these competitions one to the leading plant in each of six groups. An anthracite, mine in Pennsylvania, a bituminous-coal mine in West Virginia, a metal mine in Tennessee, a nonmetal mine in Virginia an open-cut mine in Minnesota, and a quarry in Alabama won the 1941 trophies.To be eligible to win a trophy, a mine or quarry must have had at least least 25 men working under ground or in the pit for not loss than 100 days. The number of man-hours worked must total 30,000 or more. Mines or quarries having no accidents during the year are rated according to the number of man-hours worked. If there are no plants with accident-free records, the mines and quarries in each of the six groups are rated according to their accident-severity rates; the plant having, the lowest rate is declared the winner.The Sentinls of safety trophies presented to the winning mines and quarries in the six groups were donated by the Explosives Engineer magazine to promote safety in the mineral industry. They are held by the winning companies for 1 year or until won by other mines and quarries."

Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts, The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10-7 atm. The concentration of CU2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10-7 atm at 1300 °C. The activities of CuO0.5 and AsO1.5 in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of SiO2 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2x 103 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol. Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300°C. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags. The mechanism of resulfurization in the desulfurization process with magnesium vapor produced in situ by aluminothermic reduction of magnesium oxide was clarified in the present work. The influences of various operating parameters on the resulfurization were studied and the methods that could prevent resulfurization were proposed. There are two kinds of mechanisms of resulfurization in the desulfurization process with magnesium. One is decomposition of the desulfurization product of MgS under the inert atmosphere. The other is oxidation of MgS under the oxidative atmosphere. Under the present experimental conditions, lowering operating temperature and oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere could effectively prevent the resulfurization. Adding CaO onto the melt surface was an effective method for preventing the resulfurization due to transformation of the desulfurization product of MgS into the more stable compound of CaS. Since addition of the activated charcoal powders greatly decreased the transfer rate of oxygen in the atmosphere to the melt surface, it also reduced the resulfurization remarkably.

A President, soon after he is appointed, sees looming ahead of him the Presidential Address; and in something approaching despair wonders what he can possibly talk about which might hold the interest of his audience. After various casts about, it occurred to me that perhaps prospecting, and more particularly prospecting in Australia, might provide a subject. This is because, 'in the first place, 'prospecting is passing from the stage of chance surface discovery to that of systematic search applying scientific methods to theproblems involved, and in the second, it is the section of the industry with which I have been concerned through much of my: working life. As it makes an address of this sort more interesting if it includes specific reference to actual experience, I hope you will bear with me in such references to actual prospecting as I may use to illustrate the argument. Prospecting has always carried the glamour of sudden wealth. The picture of the prospector engaged, perhaps for years, in fruitless search suddenly coming on riches beyondhis hopes is, deeply etched in the Australian imagination. In few other places has the fervour of prospecting run higher than it did in Victoria in the generation beginning little more than a century ago following the discovery of gold.People arrived from overseas in great numbers. Most of them proceeded to: the goldfields. They moved in thousands from new find to new find. In 'so doing' they determined much of the course of the State's development. The experience of prospectors led them to formulate all sorts of theories little impeded by awkward facts, to account for the apparently unpredictable occurrence of gold.The ideas which men followed, occasionally to success, and which they were prepared to back with all they had were strange and, various, many stories are told of them.
