The recognition that surface mining need not be viewed as a permanent dedication of the land but rather as a temporary non-renewable use in a series of land uses has caused greater emphasis on the re-use of surface-mined lands. In an effort to develop a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials, specific mines in various regions of the U.S. have been studied to determine the extent of current mined-land planning and to discover characteristics that are regional in nature. As part of this investigation, the Indian Head Mine, which is located in Mercer County, North Dakota, has been studied. The Indian Head Mine is presently operated by The North American Coal Corporation -Western Division and has been in operation since 1917 under various ownership. The status of current reclamation and postmining land use planning was reviewed. In addition, the relationship between mine planning and public planning in an area impacted by energy development was investigated. Finally, key factors affecting site potential realization for western surface mines have been identified.

The presence of dust and fume suspended in the freeboard region is a common feature of the operation of direct current (DC) plasma smelting furnaces. This occurs primarily as a result of the use of fine feed materials together with the open-arc, open-bath operation of such smelters, and is exacerbated by the high velocities and turbulent mixing of the gas in the vicinity of the arc jet. Dust and fume losses into the furnace off-gas system can be significant in some cases and may have economic, operational, and environmental impacts on the process. A computational modelling study is presented in which the concentration of dust material was considered as a continuous field subject to a governing partial differential equation. Settling behaviour was calculated as a function of particle size, local gas/plasma temperature, and other physical properties. Development of the coupling between the concentration field and a magnetohydrodynamic description of the arc is shown, and the resulting models were used to compute various aspects of the behaviour of the concentration field in the arc region for a variety of furnace conditions. Time-averaged as well as transient models of the arc were used to generate the results presented. Qualitative case studies produced several practical suggestions for furnace operation, including increased dust capture by the bath when feed ports are located closer to the electrode, and the possible effects of feed segregation in the furnace freeboard based on dust particle size and density.

A novel instrumentation and analysis technique, called GLOSTREXT method has recently been introduced for bored pile load tests in Malaysia. This technique provides an innovative and improved alternative for conventional bored pile instrumentation methods commonly practiced for the past few decades. Results for five case histories involving full scale static load tests for high capacity bored piles with both new and conventional instrumentation details placed in within the same instrumented piles are presented to demonstrate the advantages of this novel technique. Results show good agreement between the new and conventional instrumentation.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Extension to Woolwich Arsenal provides a much-needed public transport link to this area of London. The project includes construction of 5.3mID running tunnels under the River Thames, in ground conditions that proved challenging for the Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The project also includes cut and cover tunnel approaches, an underground station, and an emergency shaft on the bank of the river. Major challenges have included tunneling under sensitive infrastructure, and working adjacent to existing operational railways at Woolwich Arsenal. This paper will describe the design and construction of the project and how these challenges were overcome.

THE subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,1 Bolles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the sulphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply then to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic, sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and metallographic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

Piling work for modification to the Charles Grimes Bridge in Melbourne, Australia required piles to be installed through 15 to 20 m thickness of very soft to soft silty clay overlying 10 m of stiff clays and sands in turn overlying siltstone. The presence of an old sewer founded at depth in the soft clays demanded that vibrations be kept to a minimum. Two pile type were used by Vibro-pile (Australia) to provide the client with the most economical piling price. The two pile types were CFA piles of 750mm diameter founded in the weathered rock and a full displacement concrete injected screw pile developed by Vibro-pile called the "Z" pile, founded on the rock. The development and features of the "Z" pile are briefly discussed, including the perceived applications and advantages of the pile type. On board instrumentation comprising a computer was used to monitor all aspects of the construction. The rig instrumentation provided an important quality control measure that gave confidence in the pile installed. Pile performance was proved on the cast in situ piles by dynamic load testing methods. Initially tests performed with a 120 kN drop hammer, which was not capable of mobilising the required loads. The performance was then satisfactorily proved by using a drop hammer of 20 tonne mass delivering blows drop heights of 1.5m. Low strain integrity tests on a number of piles were also used to confirm the structural integrity of the piles.

The selective placement of coal stripmine overburden is examined. Physical and chemical properties of spoil detrimental to revegetation and groundwater are detailed. The United States is divided into regions or similar problems. Five mining methods already used in the industry, that are capable of selectively handling waste are examined in detail. Technical and economic comparisons are made for the systems when applied to realistic mine settings. The same analysis is conducted for five novel methods capable of selectively handling waste. Comparisons are made between novel and existing methods. Suggestions for new and modified equipment are outlined. Recommendations for further research are provided. This volume contains all Appendices to the report.

"Cluff Mining operates the Phase II uranium mine and mill at Cluff Lake, northern Saskatchewan. During the Phase I operation, uranium tailings were generated by acid leaching of a gravity concentrate and high-grade ore for uranium recovery. The pre-treatment gravity process, as well as the high-grade nature of the ore, led to a concentration of gold in the tailings which justified the installation of a small circuit to recover the contained gold. The operating circuit consists of tailings repulping, grinding, cyanidation, carbon-in-pulp, gold recovery, and cyanide destruction by acidification, volatilization and re-neutralization. The process is described and typical operating parameters are provided. 1.0 INTRODUCTIONCluff Mining, a Saskatchewan partnership, is owned 20 percent by Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) and 80 percent by Amok Ltd./Ltee. (Amok), manager and operator of the partnership.The current operation includes the Phase II uranium mining and milling facilities, located at Cluff Lake 700 km north of Saskatoon, capable of processing 300,000 tonnes of ore to produce about 4,000,000 lbs. U308 (1500 tonnes of uranium) per year.The Phase I operation was initially established to process the very high grade ""D"" uranium orebody from 1980 to 1983. The leach tailings from the operation Phase I mill operation were found to contain elevated levels of gold. These high gold values were partially due to the gravity pre-concentration step included in the uranium recovery circuit, and to the naturally high levels of gold associated with the uranium mineralization in the ""D"" orebody."

While it must be remembered that our engineering schools exemplify the British cult of the amateur, that cult which lets men who have never attended a lecture on "Education" or perhaps nevereven read a book on it, become enginering teachers by profession (and so educators by inference), the root of the matter is to be found in the fact that our educational aims, and consequently our educational practice, seem suited much better to the position engineering held in the community in 1900 than to the position it holds to-day. This civilization of ours has developed, !;loth for good and for ill, into one based largely on engineering achievement; technical progress is so continuous and so rapid that thevalue of descriptive knowledge of current practice is ever lessening; enough must be imparted to make the young graduate immediately employable, and this amount is sufficient for illustrating the principles on which practice is based and on which its advance depends, but the young graduate's technical progress depends much less on his having acquired additional knowledge than on his ability to acquire knowledge, so, paradoxically, the more useful knowledge there is availabJe the less of it the student should be taught.Less conspicuous but fully as important is the enlargement of the field of work of engineering graduates, especially its extension to the initiating of policies and to the broader problems of administration. In connection with the reduction of hematite or magnetite to metallic iron, it appeared desirable to study the rate of reduction of each oxide to the next lower oxide under conditions which excluded all other condensed phases. For this purpose, pellets of Fe,O,, Fe,O,, and oFeOo were prepared. A gas train for the preparation of Ar-Hz-H20 mixtures was employed to establish a continuous flow of a controlled atmosphere over a pellet suspended on a balance. In this manner the following individual reduction steps could be studied: For example, pellets of hematite were reduced solely to magnetite by adjusting the gas atmosphere such that it was oxidizing to wustite. In other words, the reaction was complete when the hematite pellet had been totally converted to magnetite. The pellets were prepared from Baker Chemical ferric oxide. The ferric oxide powder was moistened and handrolled. Air sintering at 950°C produced Fe,0, pellets with a density of 3.65 g per cm3. The pellets ranged in size from 0.6 to 1.2 cm diam. In a fully mechanized top coal caving mining process, the mechanical properties of the top coal deteriorate constantly, and the stability of the support is determined by the boundary position of the top coal entering the limit equilibrium state. Top coal flaking occurs more easily along the advancing direction owing to an increase in the distance of the boundary from the wall. Moreover, the strength of the coal seam is an important factor that determines the boundary position. The equation of the top coal limit equilibrium zone boundary, used in fully mechanized top coal caving mining, was determined based on the limit equilibrium theory, continuum damage mechanics, and the Hoek–Brown rock empirical strength criterion. Using the RFPA3D and UDEC numerical analysis methods, the effect of top coal strength on the mechanical behavior during the mining process was determined; and the space–time relationship between the top coal deformation failure, damage evolution, and boundary of the limit equilibrium zone was established. The results revealed that when the coal mass entered the limit equilibrium zone, accelerated crack development, accelerated damage, and axial unloading occurred. Moreover, an increase in the coal seam strength caused the boundary of the top coal limit equilibrium zone to be closer to the wall. By comparing the numerical results with the theoretical results, the overall trend was found to be consistent, allowing the verification of the rationality and reliability of the determination equation of the boundary position of the limit equilibrium zone.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the sixth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the loca.ion of holes, drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Environmental regulation is an ever growing cost to the mining industry. Requirements for such items as air quality modeling, hazardous waste disposal, selenium concentration in water and sagebrush planting consume more of the mining industry’s resources each year. The mining industry is willing to make the necessary financial commitments to assure that the air, land and water resources are adequately protected and restored. However, it is sometimes difficult to explain to management and stockholders why money should be spent on a specific issue when science and common sense indicate it is being wasted. Common sense and sound science should dictate how mining is regulated.

With most of the mining industry emerging from the deepest business recession in 50 years, primary attention must be given to surviving in a business climate where dominant foreign competition, depressed prices, and potential overcapacity hang heavy over much of the industry. While already shackled with regulatory constraints, restrictive work rules, and high labor costs, mine operators are faced with the difficult task of reducing costs and improving productivity while operating at less than full capacity. To counter these nearly over-whelming factors, the mining industry must continue at the national level to seek regulatory relief and a rational policy toward foreign competition from government-controlled mines. In addition, dialogue with labor organizations must continue to minimize the impact of labor costs, cost escalators, and antiquated work practices. Although national and international actions have a tremendous impact on the future of domestic mining operations, local actions by mine operators to dramatically improve mining productivity will strengthen the industry's competitive stance. Before any substantial progress can be made, however, mine operators must recognize and define areas that depress productivity and establish goals and measures for improvement. Once problem areas are defined, a combination of technological and motivational concepts can be applied to improve productivity. Timing of Improvements While there is an immediate need for productivity improvements, only certain concepts offer near-term improvement potential while others must, of necessity, fit into a mid-range or long-range time frame. Near-term solutions (immediate to one year) likely will involve motivational concepts - work incentives and training - coupled with available technological concepts that require little capitalized development or site testing. Mid-range solutions (one to three years), by contrast, will include technological improvements in mining equipment, techniques, and systems automation. These concepts require a longer period of capitalized development and site testing before use. Long-range solutions (three years or more), which include adoption of new mining methods and computerized control systems, will appear only after prolonged research and capitalized development programs. An oxide ore heap (80,000 ton assaying 2 per cent copper) and a sulphide ore heap (300,000 ton assaying 1·7 per cent copper) are being leached in series in a closed circuit system. The ore is friable and weatherseasily giving severe percolation problems. These were eased by applying liquors at 235 gal/min to trenches 2 ft wide and 6 ft deep along the full length of the heaps.Cementation recovery was improved from 20 per cent to over 80 per cent by regular intermittent agitation of the iron using a back hoe unit.Liquor pH is controlled by acid addition, and iron content is controlled by a bleed-off set according to predictions made from a pH-Eh diagram drawn for the liquor components. These controls, together with acyclic wetting and draining procedure, have raised production from 6 ton/week to 10 tdn/week of 80 per cent copper.

En este sentido, el presente texto describe los resultados del programa de exploración 2010-2011, donde se dio el descubrimiento del primer cuerpo mineralizado del yacimiento, el cuerpo Esperanza, entre otras ocurrencias. Asimismo, se muestra que los cuerpos mineralizados de la franja metalogenética de Pataz, se formarian en estructuras de primer orden con evidencias de reactivacion, cuyo sistema estructural funciona como entrampamiento y en varias etapas de mineralizacion.

In Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, two water jacket lead furnaces have been in operation for the past three years. The furnaces were erected in war time, and only absolute essentials were procurable. The water for the jackets was obtained from wells adjacent to the works, in a dolomite formation. There being no water-softening plant, except a small one capable of treating water for the power plant only, this water was found to make a heavy scale in the jacket. During 1917 several jackets were burnt through, resulting in serious trouble and loss of output. In order to avoid this, furnaces were stopped twice a month for 8 hours and scale was removed as far as possible. In addition to the scale trouble during the summer months, a green slime grew in the supply tanks and occasionally became detached from the tank and collected in the cocks near the jackets. This caused risk to the jackets and was difficult to remove without a stoppage of the furnace. In 1918, bundles of wattle bark were placed in the hot well at the rate of one ton per month. These extracted the tannin and added from 0.5 to one part of tannin per 100,000 to the circulating water. The hot water was cooled over a brushwood cooling tower and returned to the supply tanks. The well water required to, make up the wastage was estimated at 40,000 gal per day.

Since the introduction of "boxhole" drilling in South Africa in 1973, the concept of a blind raise, drilled upward from below, has become an accepted mining practice. A combination machine, capable of constructing raises to a mining level below, or blind raising upward from a single setup position adds a further dimension in versatility. A machine with these dual operating modes was designated by The Robbins Company as the 53R and was introduced into the Western Deep Level Mines, South Africa in 1984. The unit is powerful (200 hp) and compact (18,000 lbs., in a 10 ft x 4 ft 5 inch x 4 ft 6 inch package). This paper describes the design considerations for the new machine, provides field data from early trials, and looks briefly at its overall market and potential.

"The objective of this study was to demonstrate the application of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) to the continuous analysis of online monitoring of Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe in nickel ore limonite and saprolite slurry samples. Analysis was performed on slurry samples in air at atmospheric pressure. Two pure samples of limonite and saprolite were used. Mixtures of the two samples in varying proportions were used to build calibration curves, study the influence of solid/liquid ratio, and evaluate short and long term reproducibility. The LIBS measurement of these elements is independent of the water content (from 70-85%, the range allowed by our setup). Repeatability of the measurement and long term reproducibility (from day-to-day) were below 1.2 % and 2% respectively for all the elements studied in our conditions. The results obtained showed that an industrial LIBS analyzer could provide the chemical composition of the six elements Al, Mg, Ni, Mn, Si and Fe within 1-2 minutes.IntroductionThe metal-producing industry faces the major challenge of increasing productivity, reducing costs, and maximizing benefits from existing equipment. By pyrometallurgy, metal making involves the basic steps of charging the furnace, melting the charge and refining. By hydrometallurgy, the metal refining is carried out through the dissolution of the metal by chemical reaction and electrolysis. During refining either by pyrometallurgy or hydrometallurgy, it is critical that operating parameters be adjusted and controlled so that the chemistry of the melt or the solution is within predetermined limits. Presently, the complete turnaround time for sampling, sample transfer, analysis and communication of the results to the operators is often 30 minutes or more."

The goal of any business is to seek the maximum profitability for the organization through optimization the use of resources, processes and the application of new technologies. An analysis of various case studies demonstrate that blasting can have positive impacts on the crushing and milling processes resulting in increased profitability for the mining industry (Grundstrom, Kanchibotla, Jankovich & Thornton, 2001). This paper describes the case study of two copper mines in Peru producing Cu-Mo and Cu-Au concentrates, which together with their strategic partner, have implemented a project focused on the improvement of rock fragmentation. The project was based on techniques of pattern size reduction, the use of high energy explosives and the technology of electronic initiation. Combined, these techniques were shown to have significantly impacted the efficiency of downstream processes.
