The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

Assuming that a gold ore has been effectively ground to ensure maximum economic liberation of gold, the circuits that will have the most effect on the successful operation of a gold plant will be that of the leaching and carbon-in-pulp circuit (CIP). The reagent and utilities operating costs associated with leaching, adsorption, elution and regeneration would typically make up some 15% of total operating cost, whilst the capital costs associated with these areas is about 16% of the total. Although not largest (capital and operating costs associated with comminution are generally dominant) these items represent a significant proportion of capital and operating cost. Much more importantly, these plant areas represent the primary gold recovery process and their technical and operational efficiencies will have a significant impact on overall plant efficiency. The objective during process design of these sections is thus to develop a design which provides maximum technical and economic efficiency and which is robust to potential changes in ore throughput, mineralogical characteristics and head-grade. Experience has shown that, particularly for longer life and higher-grade projects typical of the South African underground gold mining industry, small changes in recovery and efficiency have a significant value over the life of the project.

Dicho enfoque evidencia no solo lo malo, sino también todas las consecuencias que esto conlleva. Por ello, la base de dicho programa es la detección anticipada de los actos y condiciones que nos puedan generar pérdidas.

The 2,408 meter (7,900-foot) long Middle Rouge Parkway Interceptor Extension varies in size from 1.52-meter (5-foot) to 2.36 meter (7-foot 9-inch) inside diameter. Most of the sewer was constructed in tunnel through fine sands and silts. Piping of these soils through the concrete liner eventually resulted in a loss of soil support, settlement and/or severe distress of the sewer, and the formation of several sinkholes. The repair and restoration was generally performed in the sewer and included cast-in-place concrete, shotcrete, cured in place pipe, soil stabilization, cement grouting, dewatering, and chemical grouting. As a part of the work, temporary pump stations and flow diversions were required to perform the work while minimizing discharges to the adjacent Rouge River.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigations for suitable sources of high-aluminum clay for the production of alumina, the Whiteware clay deposit was examined in August 1942 by G.N. Bennett, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Montana District Office. This report presents the factual data obtained by the investigation, which also includes data on trenching and drilling, and the results of some refractory tests and chemical analyses of representative samples of the clay later taken from some of the best trench exposures and from adit dumps.

This Bureau of Mines report delineates the coal reserve base of anthracite, bituminous and subbituminous coals, and lignite, by mining method and sulfur content, for coal-bearing States west of the Mississippi River. The parameters used to establish the reserve base definition are the result of a joint agreement by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. The reserve base of low-sulfur coal, =10 percent sulfur, is 167,324.5 million tons; medium-sulfur coal, 1.1-3.0 percent sulfur, is 37,531.5 million tons; and high-sulfur coal, >3.0 percent sulfur, is 11,244.1 million tons. The reserve base of coal with an unknown sulfur level is 18,323.0 million tons. The percentages of deep and strippable coal are 56 percent and 44 percent, respectively. The basis for reserve base estimates and analytical data for this report was the Fuels Availability System, a Bureau of Mines data bank containing numerous data tin fossil fuels. Information contained in the system was obtained from publications of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Geological Survey, State agencies, private publications, and company data.

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.

Durability risks for underground facilities can be underestimated during design phase as compared to well-known geological risks. However, unclear durability requirements can result in construction schedule delay and change orders. Unlike bridges or buildings, a unified underground durability code or standard does not exist. This paper will provide a durability approach for underground facilities, including degradation modes, mitigations, and compliance measures during construction. In addition, this paper will address how to clearly specify durability requirements in a contract document to reduce disputes during construction and discuss key durability tests that are time consuming and will impact construction schedule if not timely planned.

Decisions made during a response to a mine fire or an explosion greatly affect the final outcome. The safety of miners should be the primary concern with accounting for all of the miners the first issue for resolution. If miners have not safely evacuated from the mine, the last known location of the miners at the time of the event and anticipated travel routes are primary exploration areas. After the mine is evacuated, there are many very important decisions that must be made quickly and often under great stress. It is critical that the mine operator establish an orderly method to direct the mine emergency response. Designation of a Command Center, staffed with personnel charged with developing plans, is a common method of establishing control. Scheduling of key mine managers will be critical, since decisions must be made 24 hours a day and people working for extended periods with little or no sleep do not always make clear or cognizant decisions. Internal communications, passing information on to subsequent shifts, and external communications with families and media must be accurate and timely. Assembling resources for responding to the mine emergency is critical for an effective response, and pre-planning can pave the way to a successful recovery. Sampling mine gasses and accurately determining the composition of gas mixtures is a common tool used to develop response plans in all fires and explosions. It is essential that preparations for emergency situations are made well in advance of a disaster. Effective communications are essential for mine management to successfully respond to a mine emergency. This paper discusses some considerations which need to be addressed in directing a response to a mine fire or explosion.

Based on fundamental process performance objectives, a standard system for base-level control of most ball mill installations is presented. This system is simple, inexpensive, and provides the major economic benefits available from contemporary automatic control technology.Value Analysis of Grinding OperationsValue analysis (or engineering, or management), originally developed by Lawrence D. Miles of the General Electric Company (1), focuses on the identification of value (product or process worth versus cost) and provides a systematic procedure for its improvement. A recent research and development project involving the application of the principles of value engineering to grinding operations has provided a basic technoeconomic model of grinding processes (2). The functional objectives of the ball milling process and the means to achieve value based grinding circuit control originate from this study.The Need for Grinding Circuit ControlThe economic effectiveness of a process is determined by the quality or value of the product and the related processing costs. If the inputs (both the raw feed and the applied processing work) are absolutely constant, the product characteristics and the process efficiency will be determined only by the engineering design. The need for and degree of process control is therefore determined by the nature of variations or upsets in the process inputs, and the extent to which these effect product value and operating costs."

Introduction The Pinto Valley open-pit copper mine is located in southern Arizona, 11 km (7 miles) west of Miami. Production at Pinto Valley began in 1974. About 350 Mt (386 million st) of ore and waste was removed by the end of June 1982. At that time, the mine was using more than 90 major equipment items with a total mobile fleet numbering 320. Some of the major equipment consisted of four Marion M4 rotary drills; six P&H 15, 11.5- and 19.1-m3 (15- and 25-cu yd) shovels; and 24,136- and 154-t (150¬and 170-st) Wabco haulage trucks. This equipment was used to move more than 139 kt/d (154,000 stpd) of ore and waste. The mill was processing more than 50 kt/d (55,000 stpd) of mine ore. Shutdown A two-week vacation shutdown began in July 1982. Maintenance jobs were scheduled, and most employees left for the vacation. During the vacation period, copper prices fell below $1.32/kg ($0.60 per lb). Inventories remained at alarmingly high levels. At this point the mine was losing more money operating than it would by being shut down. The vacation shutdown was first extended to five weeks. But, after further evaluation, the mine was shut down indefinitely. In Dec. 1982, Cities Services Co., owner of Miami Operations (which included the Pinto Valley mine and mill), was acquired by the Occidental Petroleum Corp. On March 1, 1983, Occidental sold the operations to Newmont Mining Corp., and Newmont created Pinto Valley Copper Corp., as a wholly owned subsidiary. Copper continued to be produced by the Pinto Valley solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX- EW) plant because of its low cost per pound of production. To ensure proper equipment care during the shutdown, maintenance management was given three goals; • maintain the SX-EW plant; • maintain the environmental and pollution control systems such as domestic water pumps and mine dewatering; and

The Waimumu area, 12 km southwest of Gore, is underlain by the Gore Lignite Measures, an early Tertiary fluvial sequence approximately 500 m thick resting on Triassic-Jurassic argillitic basement. The Waimumu Quartz Gravels (Pliocene) have been deposited locally and are in part due to the localised reworking of the Gore Lignite Measures. Structurally the area is dominated by the Dunsdale Fault System, a steeply dipping series of NE trending reverse faults (Isaac and Lindqvist, 1990). The Belle-Brook, Hedgehope and Parker Road sites sampled are adjacent to the downthrown (east) side of the Hedgehope Fault.The authigenic gold-sulphide association at Belle-Brook was discovered in 1987 (Falconer, 1987: Clough and Craw, 1989). Despite a very limited amount of alluvial mining a significant quantity of authigenic marcasite has developed. Authigenic sulphide trace element analysis has shown anomalous amounts of As, Ni, Cr and to a lesser extent Zn, Pb and eu (Table 1). It has been established that the nickel occurs as a colloform banded Ni sulphide, possibly bravoite, within the marcasite (Figures 1 & 2). Arsenic and nickel (re)mobilisation are well documented in the literature. Generally As and heavy metals are mobilised in the groundwater as a result of the oxidation of sulphides (ie as a result of mining). At Belle-Brook it is reasonable to assume the authigenic sulphide trace element composition reflects either localised groundwater contamination or hydrothermal mineralisation. This poster presents some preliminary findings.

"INTRODUCTION North Carolina has been the leading producer of mica in the United States, accounting for roughly 50 percent of the Nation's output. The producing area is a belt some 100 miles in width lying in the Mountain and Piedmont sections in the western part of the State. Ashe, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Transylvania, Rutherford, Cleveland, and Lincoln Counties supply the bulk of production, while small amounts have been produced in Gaston, Catawba, Burke, Wilkes, Yadkin, Stokes, and Person Counties.To assist the operators and expedite the production of mica during the recent emergency, the Bureau of Mines drilled four of the more promising mica properties in this State. The results of this exploratory program are recorded in this report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. LARGE copper whiskers (-100 p) of 11111 orientation were tested in a floor-model Instron testing machine, at liquid nitrogen temperature. (Testing methods will appear elsewhere.) Whiskers deformed by twinning after some initial deformation. A load-elongation curve at the onset of twinning is reproduced in Fig. 1. Twinning was confirmed by taking a back-reflection Laue picture, using a slit colli-mator, which showed distinct splitting of reflections. The tensile stress reached just before twinning is about 1.4 x 107 g per sq cm (-7.0 x106 g per sq cm—resolved shear stress) which drops to 1.2 x107 g per sq cm (-6 x 106 g per sq cm—resolved). This twinning stress is about five to ten times larger than the value for bulk single crystals of copper deformed at 77°K (-106 g per sq cm—resolved). Twinning models based on Cottrell-Bilby's pole mechanism are discussed in detail by Venables.' In the present work a mechanism based on the idea of failure of a Lomer-Cottrell barrier by recombination will be proposed. An L-C barrier may fail either by recombination or by dissociation.3 Fig. 2 provides the necessary information. It shows that the stress necessary to break such a barrier is about 1.8 x 107 g per sq cm by recombination and 4 x 107 g per sq cm by dissociation at 77°K. The twinning stress reached by whiskers is comparable to the stress level required for failure of an L-C barrier by recombination. (Stroh himself points out that his calculations should not be taken too literally.) An industrial port complex was constructed on the west coast of Leyte Island The work was started in December 1981 and completed in May 1984. This port complex includes a 665 m long wharf and can accommodate vessels ranging from a 60,000 DWT ore carrier to a 4 000 DWT general cargo ship. It now handles materials for and products from a copper smelter with an annual capacity of 130,000 t and a fertilizer plant with an annual capacity of 900,000 t. The Wharf structures consist mainly of interlocked steel pipe piles, steel sheet piles and steel pipe Piles. Material handling equipment such as unloaders, shiploaders, etc. were installed on the wharf. Site survey, planning, engineering design and construction aspects of the port development are discussed in this paper with particular emphasis on the wharf structure.

The evolution of thermodynamic models of molten salts and slags, starting with Temkin in 1948, has culminated in today?s sublattice models. These modern models have permitted the development of large thermodynamic databases of model parameters, which can be used to calculate and predict accurately the properties of multicomponent solutions. The model parameters are mainly obtained by the critical evaluation and optimization of available thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data for binary and ternary subsystems. The models are then used to estimate the properties of multi component slags and salts from these assessed binary and ternary parameters. When used in conjunction with thermodynamic databases for solids and solid solutions (salts, oxides, sulphides, metals, etc.), other liquid solutions (such as liquid metals),and gases, these databases permit the calculation of complex multiphase equilibria in multicomponent systems, with applications in a wide variety of industries. These calculations can be performed with general commercial software for Gibbs energy minimization, which can also be incorporated into process simulation software packages. In recent years, there is an increasing demand on manganese consumption which stems from the important role of manganese in carbon steel production. And the growing need for manganese ores makes the beneficiation of low-grade manganese ores more economical. In this study, the characterization and beneficiation studies were carried out to propose a flow sheet for typical low-grade Turkish manganese ores. For this aim, different gravity separation methods were applied. According to the mineralogical analysis, the major mineral phases are pyrolusite (MnO2) and psilomelane (MnO2) while the major gangue mineral is radiolarite. Gravity separation tests were accomplished by using jigs, shaking table, MGS (Multi Gravity Separator) and in order to obtain products with high Mn ratio, high intensity magnetic separation was also performed. As a result, different combinations of flow sheets were utilized and a concentrate assaying 56.5% Mn with 85 % recovery was obtained.

The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 um. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

In this paper the link between process metallurgy, classical minerals processing, product centric recycling and urban/landfill mining is discussed. The depth that has to be achieved in urban mining and recycling must glean from the wealth of theoretical knowledge and insight that have been developed in the past in minerals and metallurgical processing. This background learns that recycling demands a product centric approach, which considers simultaneously the multi-material interactions in man-made complex ‘minerals’. Fast innovation in recycling and urban mining can be achieved by further evolving from this well developed basis, evolving the techniques and tools that have been developed over the years. This basis has already been used for many years to design, operate and control industrial plants for metal production. This has been the basis for Design for Recycling rules for End-of-Life products. Using, among others, the UNEP Metal Recycling report as a basis (authors are respectively Lead and Main authors of report), it is demonstrated that a common theoretical basis as developed in metallurgy and minerals processing can help much to level the playing field between primary processing, secondary processing, recycling, and urban/landfill mining and product design hence enhancing resource efficiency. Thus various scales of detail link product design with metallurgical process design and its fundamentals.
