Native asphalt was produced in 1981 by five companies in three States, Alabama, Texas, and Utah. Texas was the leading State in production of native asphalt. Total production increased in 1981 to 1.26 million tons, while value increased 10.5% to $27.7 million. Bituminous limestone, used primarily for street and road repair, was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co., both in Uvalde County, Tex., and Southern Stone Co., Colbert County, Ala. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co., Uinta County, Utah, and Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp., Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

Five lignites from the northern Great Plains province were carbonized at temperatures from 500° to 1,000° C in a bench-scale unit. A replicated Greco-Latin square experimental design was employed to allow testing of four independent variables at five levels. Independent variables investigated were temperature, source of lignite (mine), weight of charge, and moisture content of charge. Dependent variables were char yield, tar yield, light-oil yield, tar plus light-oil yield, carbonization gas yield, and carbonization gas heat yield. An analysis of variance indicated that, at the 99-percent confidence level, the independent variables of carbonization temperature, source of lignite, and weight of charge were significant for yields of char, tar plus light oil, and carbonization gas, whereas moisture content was only significant for carbonization gas yields. At the 95-percent confidence level, moisture content significantly influenced the carbonization gas heat yield per pound of lignite charge and the yields of dry tar plus light oil. All dependent variables were determined on a moisture- and ash-free basis. Multiple regression equations for predicting seven different factors of carbonization yields as functions of carbonization temperature and initial composition were developed using computer techniques. Equations for yields of char, tar plus light oil, and carbonization gas were compared with equations previously developed by others at the 500° C level.

The Ashanti mine, located in Obusai, Ghana, West Africa, has been in production for over 100 years, and is currently the second largest single gold producer in Africa. The mine covers a concession area of 434 square kilometers with four main ore types: the quartz vein type, disseminated sulphide type, supergene sulphides and transition ore, and granitoids stock works (visible gold and quartz veinlets). Various mining strategies and methods have been employed for the mining of the narrow-vein ore at Ashanti. In recent years, the mine owner: Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. has embarked on a mine-wide expansion program to boost production to a target of one million ounces per annum. With the rapid depletion of its high-grade ore, a suitable mining method was required to produce a high tonnage at low cost to meet production objectives. This paper discusses how the Ashanti mine applied Canada experiences in mining technology to boost production, and the impact that the differing geological settings between the two countries had on the stope performance at the Ashanti operations. Experience developed at the Ashanti mine led to innovative modifications for stope layout and design methods in relatively poor ground conditions.

Two DFI committees independently organized two complimentary panel sessions for the recent American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Geo- Risk 2023 "Advances in Theory and Innovation in Practice" Conference in Arlington, Virginia, July 23-26. The Geo- Institute (GI) specialty conference welcomed more than 200 professionals and students interested in risk from around the world to the Washington, D.C., area for three full days of plenary keynote lectures, papers and no-paper sessions. The GI Risk Assessment and Management Technical Committee organized the event, which is the third in a series planned on a 6-year cycle. The previous two events were in 2011 in Atlanta and 2017 in Denver.

The susceptibility of a low-alloy steel that has been hardened and tempered-826 M40 (EN26)-to embrittlement by strain aging during service was simulated by artificial aging of specimens at 100°C. It was found that the brittle transition temperature of both monotonic and cyclically strained material was increased by only about 25°C as a result of strain aging. It is concluded that the susceptibility of low-alloy steels in the hardened, tempered condition is less than that of low-carbon steel, and that such steels qualify for exemption of the periodic 'annealing' required by the Mines and Works Act.

The Republic of Monte Negro (a member of the Serbia and Monte Negro federation) has 26 different mineral raw materials, 4 of which are recoverable and 22 unrecoverable. At present, 12 types of mineral raw materials are exploited. Based on these resources more than 80 facilities were built for the production and processing of mineral raw materials. The most significant of them are coal, bauxite and decorative and technical stone. Bearing in mind that all the mentioned mining facilities have significant impact on the living environment, and that Monte Negro was declared the ecological state, the objective of this paper is to present the experience acquired from this field of science.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by The Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township-is given with the discussion covering that area.

Introduction Situated in the district of South Lorrain, some 16 miles southeast of Cobalt, Ontario, and reached from that centre either by branch line of the T. & N. O. railway or by what, for a mining camp, is a reasonably good road, the Keeley mine, owned by the Keeley Silver Mines,' Ltd., has had its history recorded by C. W. Knight (1). Silver was first discovered in South Lorrain, in Woods' vein, on Keeley property, in 1907, and the Keeley mine has been described by Knight (2) and Bell (3). The total production to February 28th, 1930, has been 10,760,107 ounces of silver and 1,285. 434 pounds (weight) of cobalt.

Vallourec was world pioneer in the deployment, development and consolidation of technology for the use of pulverized charcoal as the main energy source on the first Grate-kiln pelletizing plant in Brazil. The objective of this work was to delve into the subject and to bring more information about this innovative practice of Vallourec that has been attracting the attention of other companies in the steel industry. Industrial tests confirmed the technical feasibility, taking Vallourec ahead in the project of adaptation and investment. With consolidated data of two years and five months from the beginning of the implementation, the main benefits are the average reduction of CO₂e emissions by 50%, cost reduction higher than expected and return on investment in just 19 months.

Electric Arc Furnaces keep evolving into highly powerful melting units, shrinking taptotap times by increasing the effectiveness of the energy sources and the material fluxes used in the process. Steelmakers are targeting to increase the efficiency of their injection package in order to reduce the overall conversion costs, seeking for technologies specifically designed to promote the metallurgical reactions in a predictable and reproducible process automatically controlled at the correct timing. Many technological enhancements have focused in the gas management, improving the burner design and the penetration capacity of oxygen injectors, dedicated to decarburization and the other exothermic reactions. Instead, lower evolution efforts have been addressed to engineered solutions for managing the addition of solid materials required in slag forming, although they are playing a key role in EAF process optimization, as well. The paper describes the latest solutions designed to manage efficiently the injection of fuel, oxygen and powdered materials in several EAFs and presents the operational results achieved. Accurate control of reliable additions of coal, lime and magnesia proved crucial for the control of the slag FeO and viscosity, generating stable foamy slag and producing cleaner steel.

In this Bureau of Mines study, an equation is derived for the limit burning velocity for divergent, spherical propagation from an ignition kernel of radius, r: (Su)e = ( ) . For flame propagation into a preexisting, stretching velocity gradient of magnitude dv/dx, the limit velocity is (Su)e = (a dv/dx)1/2. These formulations are shown to be equivalent to the fluid dynamic concepts of Damkoh1er, Kar10-vitz, and Markstein. Existing data for the b10woff limits of flames are shown to give excellent agreement with those concepts provided that proper account is taken of two dilution effects: composition dilution caused by entrainment and velocity gradient dilution caused by flow expansion. Approximate flow-field solutions are also derived for the unburned gas motion above an upward propagating, spherical flame kernel in buoyancy-induced flows. It is shown that;, the upward hemisphere propagates toward a stagnation plane in a counterflow configuration involving the balance between the combustion force, which accelerates the cold gas upward, and the buoyancy force that accelerates the cold gas downward. The position of the stagnation plane above the upward propagating hemisphere is related to the ratio of the buoyant velocity, vb, to the burning velocity, Suo Extinction of the upward propagating wave occurs by flame stretch in that counterflow configuration when n = Vb/Su begins to exceed the expansion ratio, Pu/Pb' and the wave is blown off by its own buoyancy-induced flow field.

Policies for reducing NOx emissions have led power plants to restrict O2, resulting in high-carbon fly ash production. Therefore, some potentially useful fly ash, such as the economizer fly ash, is discarded without a thorough knowledge of its composition. In order to characterize this type of fly ash, samples were collected from the economizer of a Portuguese power plant burning two low-sulfur bituminous coals. Characterization was also performed on economizer fly ash subsamples after wet sieving, density and magnetic separation. Analysis included atomic absorption spectroscopy, loss-on-ignition, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of nee' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gal¬lons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain this high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ore near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand for new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements ill the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.
