Study on Mineral Processing Technology for a Refractory Iron Ore

Drill blasting is a widely used method for rock fragmentation in mining, quarrying and construction industries. Environmental effects such as air shocks, dust, flying rocks and ground vibration are unavoidable results and undesired effects of blasting. Among these ground vibrations can have a damaging effect and may influence on long distances. Therefore various researchers have developed mathematical models to predict ground vibration after blasting. These models take into account the amount of explosive, distance and several coefficients related to the field under investigation. The developed models to predict ground vibration may yield different results for the same case. Selection of the most suitable model requires engineering judgment and evaluation of models. At this point, a computerised system helps the engineer to evaluate and select the most suitable model in order to design and plan a blasting pattern. The safe charge of explosive and magnitude of vibration after blasting should be predicted beforehand. Therefore a computer program namely 'prediction of blast induced vibration' (P-BIV) has been developed. This paper introduces and presents a computer program (P-BIV) which includes the set of models developed to estimate ground vibration to provide blasting engineers a tool to determine the amount of explosive for safe blasting.

In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. The Winton Basin is one of three Southland sub-basins. The oldest known sediments are Early Oligocene terrestrial shales, sands and lignites deposited in half grabens formed as a result of oblique extension. A marine transgression in the Oligocene deposited mid-outer shelf to upper bathyal mudstones. Shallowing of the basin and tectonic quiessence lead to limestone deposition in the Early Miocene. Regional tilting led to uplift in the north and east and deposition of terrestrial lignites and gravels across the basin and the basement high to the south.

With the continued implementation of stricter limitations on the discharge of excess process water from all existing and future mining and metallurgical operations, the design and operation of the entire process water circuit must form an integral part of any total operational package. It is far better to æanticipate and circumvent the problemÆ rather than be forced into an expensive remediation program after the event. By far the greatest problem relates to the treatment and disposal of what is generically known as acid drainage. In simple terms, an acidic metal sulfate solution is generated by a series of chemical and biological reactions as soon as most sulfide minerals are exposed to air and water. Treatment of this solution by one or more of a wide range of chemical and physical options can involve substantial capital and operating costs, although there are recent processing options that yield saleable by-products, thereby reducing the financial liability of what is effectively a waste stream. This presentation provides an overview of the Australian situation compared with the rest of the world and outlines the basic features of a number of the more advanced passive and active acid drainage options.

In this study, 23 samples of leached ash (LA) were collected from an ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station and geotechnically characterised. The samples were collected at various depths and locations within the ash pond on two separate occasions in order to account for the full variability. The LA within the ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station (LYPS) was found to vary in texture from silt to sand, depending on the location from where the sample was collected. Samples collected near the ash pond inlet discharge point, for instance, contained more than 50 per cent sand sized particles and were subsequently classified under the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as silty sand (SM). Further downstream of the inlet discharge, the LA became progressively finer and was classified accordingly as elastic silt (MH) when the sand content became less than 50 per cent. Basic geotechnical testing revealed that the LA from Loy Yang Power Station was generally acceptable as a landfill cover material. The permeability of LA, however, was generally too high for prescriptive covers, (ie resistive covers that generally rely on the impervious nature of the material to control percolation). Alternative covers, generally rely on the store/release function of a capillary or monolithic barrier to prevent percolation into the landfill. Subsequently, a material that can maintain a high water storage capacity while at the same time, readily allow infiltration and evapotranspiration is required for an alternative cover. Sandy silt and silty sand are optimal soils for alternative covers, as they do not yield water to gravity forces, but do give up most of the water in their pores when subjected to high-matric suction (Kavazanjian, 2001). The effectiveness of alternative covers is ultimately assessed using computer models, such as UNSAT-H and HYDRUS-2D, to rigorously perform water balance calculations. Prior to using a computer model to determine the highest possible percolation in the worst climatic conditions, it is necessary to select the most appropriate materials. This paper suggests a method to screen available materials for use as an alternative cover material on the basis of the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC).

The role of government and the community has changed significantly over the last two decades in relation to environment protection, particularly in the mining sector. Increased community expectations have moved well ahead of regulatory requirements, and there is now a much greater appreciation generally of the concepts of ecologically sustainable development and intergenerational equity, and the gap between current practice and practices which would be in harmony with these concepts. Besides providing a `safety net' through regulations to ensure that basic environmental performance standards are met, government is now working proactively with the mining industry to encourage higher levels of environmental performance. This paper describes some initiatives between the Commonwealth government and the industry designed to achieve these higher levels of environmental performance, through programs aimed at the paradigms of best practice environmental management and continual improvement.

In the roast-leach-electrolysis process for the production of zinc, iron contained in zinc concentrates is converted to zinc ferrite during roasting. At Canadian Electrolytic Zinc (CEZinc), the Outokumpu Conversion process is used to simultaneously leach zinc ferrite and precipitate the iron as jarosite. Amorphous silica deposits have been identified at Tikitere and Taheke near Rotorua. Two areas at Tikitere have been surface sampled and drilled to establish a resource of amorphous silica in excess of one million tonnes. A pilot plant was established to develop a process to manufacture a high quality super pozzolanic material. This development process took two years before a commercial product was introduced to the construction industry in 1996. The amorphous silica product, marketed as Microsilica 600, is used as a pozzolanic material to produce high quality strong and durable concrete, sprayed tunnel linings, mortars and grouts. Microsilica 600 has been used locally and exported to 11 countries.

The shallow soils and hostility of the environment dictate that choices of plant species should focus on persistence rather than high productivity, choices that are made easier by observing the vegetation patterns that have developed naturally within the area, by recontouring landforms to integrate with the surrounding countryside and the use of appropriate plants and establishment techniques.

THE object that the writer has mainly in view in presenting this paper is to draw the attention of those connected with the technical side of the industry to the unsatisfactory and by no means up-to-date methods employed in estimating the tin contents of an ore. At the same time, what is regarded, from the writer's personal experience, as a satisfactory and reliable method is explained in detail. It is a curious fact that for the last 25 years tin·assay methods have made little or no advance, while those now in general use ill connection with copper and lead ores can scarcely be compared with those then obtaining, so greatly have they been improved upon. At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. The granite porphyry dyke has a thickness of up to 40 m, extends discontinuously for about 8 km, and intrudes thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The granite dyke and gold-bearing sulphide and quartz-siderite veins within it have been deformed and recrystallised during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous.   The unaltered granite porphyry is composed of phenocrysts of perthite, arfvedsonite, aegerine and quartz in a groundmass of the same minerals, with accessory ilmenite, rutile and fluorite. K-Ar dates of amphibole from the granite gave ages of 226 and 246 Ma, but these ages may be a minimum due to resetting during the thermal and deformation events that have affected the area. Unpublished Ar-Ar data on amphibole from the granite show disturbed spectra with high temperature steps around 300-315 Ma, which is consistent with the age of A-type granites in the Buller region. Further age dating of primary and hydrothermal minerals in the granite is continuing. At least three stages of hydrothermal alteration have been identified in the granite. Stage I alteration is characterised by high fO2 magnetite-siderite ¦ biotite, which is cut by thin quartz-pyrite veinlets (Stage II). These are cut by Stage III sulphide, quartz and siderite veins, and pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile ¦ pyrite-siderite-sericite assemblages overprints the earlier alteration stages. Lamprophyre is altered to a siderite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. Stage III sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, deposited by low fO2 H2S fluids. The gold contains 18-30 wt% Ag and up to 1 wt% Bi. Temperature of vein formation was estimated from vein quartz fluid inclusion homogenisation temperatures (Th 260-355oC, average 330oC), arsenopyrite-sphalerite thermometry (310-365oC) and quartz-albite stable isotope thermometry (340oC). The altered granite and the veins have been deformed, and recrystallised and competent sulphide minerals are fractured and brecciated. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre.

In a modern economy there is a compelling case why governments should not own property rights to mineral deposits. Assuming they do, however, governments will use these constitutional rights to raise revenue. They have two basic instruments to achieve this; a royalty charge on price or a rent tax on income/profits. On the one hand, a royalty charge creates a 'deadweight loss' to society by increasing cut-off grades and decreasing the life-of-mine. They are also regressive. However, they are easy to administer. On the other hand, a rent tax avoids the problem of 'deadweight loss'; it does not impact on the life-of-mine because the tax structure is neutral. But, they are difficult to administer correctly, particularly in the determination of rents and the definition of mining per se. If rents are incorrectly determined capital markets are distorted. And, if mining activities are incorrectly defined, downstream activities could be adversely affected.
