In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

Serious exploration for carbonate-hosted lead/zinc deposits in the Pillara district commenced in 1971 when Trend Exploration acquired exploration tenements covering stream sediment anomalies in the Limestone Billy Hills area. Shell Minerals managed the project from 1974 to 1976, and BHP Minerals Limited assumed management during 1976. Carbonate-hosted 'Mississippi-Valley- type' Pb-Zn deposits most commonly occur in Palaeozoic shallow marine carbonate complexes. At Pillara upper Devonian (Givetian/Frasnian) reef complexes are preserved on the flanks of Precambrian basement 'highs'. Within platform and atoll facies limestones sphalerite-galena- marcasite-calcite mineralisation occurs as disseminations, veins and breccia matrix, mostly associated with fractures and fault zones. Early exploration concentrated on detailed surface geochemistry and IP geophysical surveys, with geological mapping and shallow target percussion and diamond drilling. Results were discouraging and did not indicate potential for a shallow base metal resource. During 1976-77 BHP adopted a grid diamond drilling exploration technique and commenced testing an area of approximately 50 sq. km, initially using an 800 m square grid. In 1978 high grade mineralisation was intersected in an area subsequently named Blendevale. This was in the seventh diamond drill hole in the 800 m grid drilling programme, and to date more than 400 holes have been cored in the Pillara area. Detailed drilling at Blendevale has defined a number of mineralised breccia zones within an area of 2.4 km x 0.5 km, at depths of 100 m to 600 m below surface. The breccia bodies are associated with a series of north-south trending normal fault zones, forming a graben structure. Proceeding from statistical data on the development of waste volume, an endeavour was made to characterise waste materials with regard to the applicability of treatments based on mineral processing. Many types of waste are characterised by a high heterogeneity. The separation processes used for processing raw minerals can also be used for separation of various waste mixtures. For some waste mixtures, differences in properties can be utilised for separation which are mostly less distinctive for raw minerals. State-of-the-art technology is illustrated with selected Examples.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. I The South Platform of the Gippsland Basin is an extensive area of shallow basement covered by a relatively-thin Late Mesozoic-Cainozoic section. Although the sporadic exploration to-date has not resulted in any hydrocarbon discoveries, the area is under-explored and its taste potential has not yet been fully evaluated. The best potential appears to be in areas underlain by the Golden Beach Megasequence where structures are mainly related to basement fault blocks.

Manganese nodules cover great areas of deep ocean floor far from land, and have long been considered a major potential resource of nickel, copper, cobalt and perhaps manganese. A decade ago there was a period of intense evaluation of nodule fields, especially those lying between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones in international waters southeast of Hawaii. There, nodules are abundant and of high grade (average of 2.4% Ni+Cu+Co). The evaluation activity has since declined, but a recent agreement on lease boundaries among all interested parties may lead to a resurgence of work. Indeed, French and Japanese groups have pushed ahead with field and economic assessments.The Southwest Pacific, where there are large nodule fields in the waters of the Cook Islands and Kiribati, has seen considerable assessment of resources in the last ten years, especially through a major field programme of the Japanese Metal Mining Agency. The best prospect appears to be in the South Penrhyn Basin, in Cook Islands waters, where nodules are very abundant but of only moderate grade (1% Ni+Cu+Co). Using a cut-off of 5 kg of wet nodules per m2, Cronan (1989) and Cronan et al. (1989) have estimated the total resource to be a huge 110 million tonnes of Ni+Cu+Co.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine is being developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km northeast of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners, road-headers and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumped down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.   PRCL faces significant challenges to achieving the goal of cost effective production. The remoteness, high rainfall (greater then 6 metres per year on average), temperature variation and restrictions on access to this subalpine environment have driven the project to develop some distinctive solutions. These include the establishment of survey control in such a difficult environment with vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, significant vegetation and steep slopes by using helicopter survey, aerial photography and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerial survey. PRCL has also commenced designing the placement of the main ventilation fans in an underground chamber in the stone drive.

The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.

The Hilton Mine, 20 km north of Mount Isa was discovered in 1947. The underground mine has been a significant producer from 1989. The long development history is the result of complex orebody geometry, difficult metallurgy, dewatering problems and competition for development funds from the then expanding Isa Mine at Mount Isa. At present it produces 1.4 million tonnes annually. Its 21 million tonnes of reserves are necessary to supplement Isa Mine production.Hilton Mine is located in the Urquhart Shale formation of the Mount Isa Group, within the Mid Proterozoic Mount Isa Inlier. The seven developed orebodies have suffered strong structural deformation. Each orebody has a unique mixture of mineralogy and texture which effects ore value and metallurgical performance. These characteristics have proven useful for correlation purposes.The faulting and folding have caused difficulties with orebody interpretation, geomechanical complexities and has influenced the choice of mining methods: Initial cut and fill and open scope designs have given way to bench mining methods in response to better understanding of the eedloav and economic constraints.

Slow seismotectonic movements along the in-clined deep fault zone under the compressional horizontal stresses are supposed to be the prin-cipal mechanism controlling the structure and processes in the active ocean margins. Within the scope of the plane strain problem a simple 2-D geomechanical model for the evolution of an island arc system is investigated. We consider a homogeneous elastic half-plane with a shea-ring surface crack. The key element of the model is viscous interaction between the crack sides, the viscisity varying with depth. The model dif-fers from the classical steady-state mode of subduction by nonstationary creep processes on deep faults and by possibly cyclical development of the transition zone.A numerical modeling of the stress-strain state within the island arc system through time was carried out using a semianalytical approach. The results of simulation are in good agreement with geological, geophysical, and seismological data.

Geostatistics - a tool used by geologists and mine planning engineers to estimate grades and rapidly evaluate alternative mining strategies has reached an advanced stage of development for the silver-lead-zinc orebodies at Isa and Hilton Mines. Geostatistics has been used for over a decade in the massive copper orebodies but the stratiform lead-zinc orebodies are much more complex and provided a completely different set of challenges. Recent increases in computer processing speed and power provided by the Integrated Mine Planning System (IMPS) has aided the development of the geostatistics package. Also the formation of a project team and the subsequent in-house development which has drawn together the expertise of geologists, engineers and system analysts has contributed significantly to the success of the project.The most important feature of any approach to modelling the lead-zinc orebodies is that the kriging search must consider estimate and sample points according to their positions relative to bedding surfaces. By transforming co-ordinates as perpendicular offsets from a plane representing the local strike and dip, it is possible to elongate the ellipsoidal influence to parallel bedding. By interactively modelling surfaces using CAD facilities and then specifying these surfaces as 'hard' or 'soft' boundaries, the geologist has complete control over the kriging process.

Mount Isa Mines' Hilton Mine was brought into large-scale production in 1990/91 at a time of sharply falling metal prices. To ensure the operation's survival and eventual prosperity there was an urgent need to reduce operating costs and increase revenue. A target of a 40 per cent increase in productivity over five years was set. Strategies to obtain the required improvements were developed on the basis of greater involvement and increased contribution from the workforce, major changes to the mining methods and the development and application of new technology. This paper describes the organisational, operational and technological changes that have been implemented at Hilton and presents the results achieved to-date.

The development of a process for the extraction of antimony from materials produced by Greenbushes Tin Limited has been carried out based on theoretical and laboratory studies. The materials treated have included concentrates of tantalite and cassiterite containing antimony at levels ranging from 0.3% to 2%. Roasting under controlled atmospheres is required to stabilise Sb203 rather than the low vapour pressure metal or higher oxide. Sulphidising additives such as pyrite, pyrrhotite or sulphur give enhanced antimony removal from tantalite and cassiterite at roasting temperatures of 900¦ to 1100¦C. Substantial elimination of antimony to levels of 0.1% or less was Achieved.

This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

Tectonic subsidence plots have been calculated for well, extrapolated-well and significant off-well (seismically-based) locations in the Vulcan Sub-basin and adjacent highs (western Timor Sea). The subsidence curves have been normalized to a common datum, the distinctive "near top Permian" marker, and corrected for sediment compaction, palaeobathymetry, eustatic sea-level change and loading effects.Four principal phases of post-Permian basin development are recognised and quantitatively described by integrating the results of the sub-sidence analysis into the regional (e.g. recent Ocean Drilling Program-derived) framework of the tectonic evolution of the North West Shelf. They are1. the Triassic-mid Jurassic Westralian Superbasin intracratonic phase,2. the late Jurassic-early Cretaceous North West Shelf rift phase,3. the mid Cretaceous-Palaeogene North West Shelf subsidence phase, and4. the Neogene-present Timor collision phase. Rapid Triassic tectonic subsidence occurred in an intracratonic setting, possibly subsequent to aborted late Palaeozoic rifting. Intracratonic sub-sidence mechanisms such as deep crustal metamorphism and/or intrustion and regional tectonic compression are invoked in addition to any post-rift thermal subsidence which may have occurred.

Following the success of calcrete sampling at Challenger, calcrete sampling has been widely adopted as the primary exploration technique for gold exploration, in the Gawler Craton. Calcrete is uniformly distributed over large areas and produces discrete gold anomalies. This allows drilling to focus on specific gold anomalous targets. However, despite widespread use of calcrete sampling, very little is known of the origin of calcrete in the Gawler Craton, and the link between calcrete gold anomalies and primary mineralisation. In an attempt to understand this association Lisa Gibbons recently completed an honours project at the Old Well Prospect approximately 45 km SSE of Tarcoola. Her work is part of a collaboration between CRCLEME, MESA and MIM Exploration. At Old Well, a calcrete anomaly (>10 ppb Au)covers an area approximately 7 km x 2 km with a peak value of 97 ppb Au. The study looked at the regolith as a whole, processes of its formation and nature of mineralisation within it. She was able to combine previous calcrete and drilling results with her own observations. The results from this study highlighted problems in relating surface calcrete anomalies to in situ gold mineralisation.

The Gameta Gold Deposit is located on the north-eastern corner of Fergusson Island in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands of Milne Bay Province, PNG, at lat. 9¦ 25' 5, long. 150¦ 47' E or AMG co- ordinate 256740 E/8959000 N (Figure 1). The area is covered by the Fergusson (SC56-05) 1:250,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet and the Koitabu (9079)1:100,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet. The property is held 100% by Union Mining NL (UMG) and lies 105 km NNE of Alotau and 33 km to the ESE of UMGs recently developed Wapolu Gold Mine, a Joint Venture between UMO (51%) and Macmin NL (49%). The inferred resource estimated from surface results and 105 RC drill holes, currently stands at 1.89 million tonnes at 2.6 git gold (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) or 155,000 oz. Evaluation of the property is currently proceeding. To date 111 RC holes have been drilled for a total of 4611 m.
