In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

The state-of-the-art in cave seismic monitoring is reviewed, with the latest developments in active seismic monitoring included. Seismic monitoring systems are routinely used by most of the world’s block and panel caving mines to track the cave initiation and progression. The current best practice is to use the cloud of seismic event locations as a proxy for cave growth somewhere below. Problems with event location reliability due to seismic ray bending around the (unknown) cave are side-stepped by using sensors installed above the cave. However, the aseismic gap – the (unknown) distance between actual cave back and seismic event cloud – currently hinders reliable estimation of cave geometry.Velocity inversions using the passive seismic data are inexpensive and should be undertaken more routinely. The straight-ray methods should be used with caution, as the underlying assumptions are invalid in caving environments. The double-difference method is more correct for the caving situation, and there have been some promising results published. Constrained geometric inversions make a lot of sense, but have yet to be demonstrated successfully.Two active seismic source have recently been developed for use in the caving environment: a piezoelectric source for ranges up to a few hundred metres and a pneumatically-powered source for ranges up to a kilometre. These sources produce signals on standard mine seismic sensors that can be used to measure seismic velocity variations down to 0.01 per cent resolution. This allows the cave progression to be monitored by measuring tiny changes to seismic velocities as the rock above the cave is fractured and destressed.CITATION:Lynch, R A, 2016. "Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. The Great South Basin is located beneath the northwest part of the Campbell Plateau, a+broad, nearly level, triangular shaped submarine platform, southeast of the South Island of New Zealand. It encompasses an area of 77 700 square kilometres and contains a sequence of Cretaceous to Tertiary sedimentary rocks which are up to 6000 metres thick near the centre of the basin (Shirley, 1983). The western boundary of the basin is adjacent to the steep Aucklands Slope. In the+ north it merges with the Canterbury Basin and to the south onlaps against the Pukaki Rise, a basement high. The eastern margin of the basin is bounded by the northeast - southwest trending steep linear Antipodes Scarp. In the extreme south the Antipodes Scarp curves westward and joins the north trending Aucklands Slope. The Campbell Plateau is dominated by tensional tectonics. The Antipodes Scarp represents a major region of transcurrent faulting initiated by Cretaceous rotation within the Campbell Plateau. Later movements are associated with the Alpine Fault of the South Island (Sandford, 1980; Anderton, Holloway, Engstrom, Ahmad and Chong, 1982).

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. Resources and reserves are critical inputs into the determination of an operating mineÆs financial results and balance sheets, but how well understood is this fact. Do the investors, directors, accountants and geologists/engineers responsible for preparing or relying on relevant aspects of the end results properly understand the inputs and outputs and the associated risks that may be established. The first step is to understand how financial reports are impacted. The most obvious, and best known, impact is in the calculation of depreciation and amortisation charges against long term assets. In addition, however, there is a requirement to regularly determine whether asset book values are impaired û this is nearly always performed globally by the preparation of a discounted cashflow model for a mine which is usually based on a mine life as determined from the resource and reserve statement û the particular driver here is normally the short and long term production plans. A key aspect of the short term production plan is that it would normally not assume that the reserve and resource statement implies consistent grade, stripping ratios, etc. However, outside of the early years of a plan, more generic assumptions of these variables are often made in conjunction with the reserve and resource statement. Depending on the timeframe of the detailed production plans, this can have a large impact on a projectÆs net present value. Other financial balances that may also be impacted include restoration and rehabilitation provisions, retrenchment provisions and deferred or equalisation stripping accounts. The age old question of whether all reserves should be used or whether some or all of the resources should be included for financial reporting purposes has never been adequately resolved. It is our view that there should be no prescriptive answer to this question but judgement of all professionals involved in the process needs to be included. Furthermore, the company needs to be able to support their conclusions with well thought out and appropriate answers. This may not be in line with the approach that certain accounting standard setters may be proposing or taking, and this paper will outline the current status of global requirement and the likely future directions. Whether reserves or resources are utilised, does not change the key requirement that those preparing or using reserve and resource statements need to understand key aspects. For example: geologists/engineers do they know how reserves or resources will be used? have they imparted information on variability of key drivers such as grade or depth or dilution? do they know that major financial/business altering decisions may be made based on the analysis? accountants do they understand where the numbers have been derived from and the assumptions that may have been made in their determination? do they understand the degree of accuracy (or inaccuracy) that may exist particularly with resources)? do they understand the history of resource reconciliations and what it may mean for the future? directors do they understand the processes undertaken by the company to prepare the financial report and the interaction between the geologists/engineers and accountants? do they understand the potential sensitivity of results to the input variables? Financial reporting is extremely reliant on the use of the reserves and resources, however, the geologists/engineers, accountants and directors do not always understand the interactions between themselves which may lead to misleading public reporting. More education and communication between various parties is needed.

South Africa has joined the league of other major Western World countries by officially adopting its own code for public reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. The recently published South African Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code or Code) (SAIMM 2000) is presented here in its local and global context. The main aspects of the Code are listed and elaborated upon. The Code has been written with the participation of the major South African stakeholders in the field including Government institutions, the legal confraternity and the mining industry. Relevant foreign organisations, such as the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) and the United Nations contributed to its compilation, and supported it. The Code thus enjoys endorsement both locally and, to a large extent, overseas. The Code is modelled on, and is 90 per cent compliant with, the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) (AusIMM, 1999). The paper also elaborates on the duties and responsibilities of Competent Persons signing off resource and reserve reports and on the new listing requirements of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE), formerly the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, which has officially adopted the Code.

This paper describes the metallurgical processes at the 80 000tpd Ok Tedi Mining Limited concentrator, which treats copper- gold ore by single-stage crushing, SAG and ball milling and flotation to produce over 500 000tpa of concentrate. Plant and process developments, including installation of column cells, reduction of fluorine in concentrate, use of sulphidisation and process control improve- ments are also discussed.

The theme of this Conference is 'The Future of Mining in New Zealand' to be addressed at a time of deepening economic concern. To ensure the assessment and development of our mineral resources in a competitive, safe and environmentally acceptable way a modest supply of a rare commodity û the professional mining engineer û must be assured. This paper briefly' reviews the history of mining education in New Zealand, discusses relevant overseas academic concerns and actions and discusses recent local trends which have led to a most serious recruitment position in the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Auckland. Conclusions are drawn and proposals made which may remedy this situation which could have serious economic and sociological consequences for New Zealand.

Sulfide-rich scale occurs in steam and water lines at the Ohaaki geothennal field,Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand. Precious metals show very high concentrations around areas ofpressure reduction (Au 15500 ppm, Ag 68800 ppm). Pyrrhotite dominates at the orifice plate due to low PH2s1PH2 conditions. Sulfide mineralogy in the scales is consistent with alteration mineralogy of the reservoir rocks. Separated steam then produces a mainly pyrite/magnetite mineralogy, with lesser chalcopyrite, where textures reflect high flow rates and high levels of supersaturation. This study outlines the effect that pressure and subsequent temperature decreases have on the mineralogy, chemistry and textures of sulfide scales.

Education in Australia now has to respond to a very wide political and policy agenda. The political emphasis is upon increasing participation and retention rates with a view to greater graduation rates in `high-tech' disciplines. There is an implied linkage between `education' and `economic well-being'. Our argument is that equalitarianism in education tends towards mediocrity. In this context many Geoscience educators view the future with pessimism. The argument is that science has been `sold short' and needs revitalising. We contend that Geoscience coursework should be a feature of both secondary and tertiary education in Australia. To this end we propose six policy initiatives to increase the content of Geoscience in education programmes.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330 lb/sq. in. tension to 3,750 lb/sq. in. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock model mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a borehole extensometer and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face was advanced the roof movement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The majority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a radioactive isotope and a scintillation counter in a pair of parallel boreholes is a sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of strata stresses is required to understand the deformation of an underground opening and, in particular, the roof behaviour. It is the aim of investigations currently being conducted by Australian Coal Association (Research) Ltd. to determine the stress existing around mine openings and the location and magnitude of roof movement.STRATA PRESSURE MEASUREMENTMost measurements of strata stress are performed at the surface of underground openings and the majority measure the change of strain resulting from stress relief. The accuracy of the measured value of stress depends upon knowledge of the rock modulus of elasticity. The flat jack method has the advantage that strain relief is restored by a measured stress applied directly by the jack. The rock modulus of elasticity can also be determined.

The sulphide ores of the principal lodes of the Boulder Mines are mainly composed of a schistose guess with a varying proportion of silica and lime, containing tellurides of gold, silver and mercury, associated with iron pyrites. The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. The Greenland Group, Westland, can be characterised with respect to environmental issues by the application of a GIS database (DAME), and specific sampling campaigns. Waters draining gold mineralised areas have a distinctive chemistry characterised by neutral pH and arsenic as a trace element. The acid neutralising capacity (ANC) from carbonates usually exceeds the maximum potential acidity (MPA) from sulphides resulting in circum-neutral pH. These waters are readily distinguishable from waters draining coal mine related areas, which commonly have low pH (~4) and low As concentrations (~0.1 ppm). In contrast, dissolved arsenic mobilised from Greenland Group historic gold mining areas is up to 2.4 ppm. This As mobilisation is controlled by the secondary As mineral, scorodite (FeAsO2+2H2O). Maximum dissolved As concentrations increase with increasing pH, corresponding to the increasing solubility of scorodite with increasing pH. Dissolved As is attenuated by dilution, precipitation of scorodite, and/or adsorption to iron oxyhydroxide (HFO). Adsorption to HFO is an important attenuation mechanism in and adjacent to many mine sites. HFO is abundant at mine sites where pyrite was abundant in fresh rock, such as where the mineralised zone is dominated by disseminated pyrite. Pyrite, and resulting HFO, are relatively rare where mineralisation occurred as well-defined quartz veins. Localised HFO occurs also where ankerite oxidises in host rocks. Arsenic output flux (ca. 25 g/day) from historic gold mine sites is commonly less than the natural background flux from mineralised rocks (>5000 g/day).

In March 2002 Newcrest Mining Ltd commissioned a 4 Mtpa gold-copper concentrator at its Cadia Valley Operations in New South Wales. This paper presents the design and construction considerations, commissioning and ramp up issues related to start up of the concentrator as well as current performance and future expansion plans. Commissioning of the plant was the culmination of six years of project planning, from discovery of the resource during the Cadia Hill drill out campaign in November 1996 to project implementation and plant operation. Current resource estimates stand at around 50 Mt with an average grade of 2.4 g/t gold and 0.8 per cent copper. At current processing rates the project life is expected to exceed ten years. The processing plant comprises a 9.75 m (32 ft) diameter Fully Autogenous (AG) mill, a single 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter ball mill, pebble crushers, gravity gold recovery circuit and flotation plant. Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and manning requirements at Cadia will be discussed as well as the resultant impacts on operating costs for the operation. The processing plant was expected to deliver 290 000 ounces of gold and 30 000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in its first full year of operation and progress against that goal will be presented.
