Earlier this year, Simplot Phosphates achieved a safety milestone at its Vernal, UT phosphate operations. In March, the entire operation reached achieved seven years without a lost time accident. And the mine operations at Vernal reached the 1 million hours benchmark without a lost time accident. This million hour achievement has been 19 years in the making. This achievement reflects the mine’s strong attitude towards safety, the company said. Safety is an integral part of its culture and requires diligence and considerable work. Attention to even the smallest of details cannot be allowed to slip. This is a record Simplot Phosphates said it hopes to improve on every day.

The La Colosa, Colombia porphyry gold deposit is currently in the pre-feasibility stage. This large deposit has many types of gold mineralization: native gold, electrum, and tellurides. These variations in the gold mineralization lead to variability in the gold recovery. The final process flowsheet may include gravity concentration with cyanide leaching. Metallurgical testwork is utilized to identify the zones of ore that may be problematic to recover. To help select the samples that represent the fluctuating variability zones, geometallurgical models are constructed using mineralogy and geology data. These zones are then wireframed and compared to the geological and structural models for spatial correlation. Samples for the variability testwork will be selected from these different zones to identify and analyse the effect the different gold mineralization types have on the recovery. By using geometallurgy to aid in the sample selection for metallurgical testwork, the variability in the ore body can be understood and constrained to aid in process optimization.

The extraction and processing of minerals from surface mines and quarries can produce significant fugitive emissions as a result of site activities such as blasting, unpaved road haulage, loading, primary crushing and stockpiling. Uncontrolled fugitive dust emissions can present serious environmental, health, safety and operational issues impacting both site personnel and the wider community. Simulation technology is finding increasing use for the purposes of advanced warning of potential problem emissions in addition to providing a basis for future planning applications where demonstrable compliance with regulatory requirements are necessary. The initial re-entrainment and subsequent dispersion of fugitive dust presents a process complicated by the combination of the in pit topography, the surrounding natural topography and the dynamic nature of emissions from these sites. These factors impact upon the accuracy and reliability of the conventional Gaussian plume based computational prediction methods employed for regulatory compliance and IPPC applications. This paper proposes that optimal modelling of open pit emissions may be more accurately achieved by the use of a multi-scale predictive modelling approach utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for high resolution near source dispersion and conventional Gaussian based methods for far field dispersion modeling. This paper presents a numerical based flow and dispersion analysis of a typical UK based open pit utilizing CFD in conjunction with a conventional Gaussian plume based methods. Typical operating emissions and meteorological conditions are obtained from long term data records collected at a large operating quarry extraction operation in the UK. Emissions are modelled using a Lagrangian framework within conventional atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) profiles expressed as functions of turbulence and velocity parameters under assumed neutral conditions. Results are presented in terms of the impact of site topography on in pit retention as compared to the Gaussian based method.

The Pipeline ore body was discovered in March 1991. The construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March of 1996. Upon completion of permitting and corporate project approval, the 289 million USD project was “fast tracked”. The commissioning began 11 months after start of construction and the project ended 40 million USD under the budget figure. The objective of this paper is to review and highlight the Pipeline Project history from discovery, design, lawsuits, permitting, and re-design through to current - 1998operating practices. Particular emphasis will review the process design, design mistakes, and design successes. The paper will review project history, feasibility, design concepts, operator training, construction, financial and the current operation. Additional discussion will review what design features worked and which did not work within the process plant.

Focus is on the sustainable use of the natural deposits in order to stay competitive. For this reason a raw material policy, both national and international, is necessary to ensure access to new mineable deposits which are still available in Germany. Further on, knowing market conditions is a must for sustainable development. At least sustainability and resource efficiency in potash and rock salt mining are achieved by constantly developing new technologies as well as optimizing the organization and improving qualification of workers."

Carbonaceous gold ores containing gold dispersed in sulfides are refractory to cyanidation because: (1 ) the carbonaceous materials adsorb gold during cyanidation; (2) a portion of the gold s so finely dispersed in the sulfide mineral lattice as to preclude contact with cyanide solution; and (3) a portion of the gold is chemically combined with carbonaceous material. Techniques which have been used to treat these ores are: (1) roasting or chemical oxidation to decompose sulfide and carbonaceous materials; (2) flotation to reject carbon; (3) the use of kerosene or other reagents to passivate the adsorptive carbon compounds; (4) carbon or resin in pulp; (5) flotation of a bulk concentrate which is treated by one of the above methods; and (6) the use of chelating agents which have a stronger affinity for gold than the activated carbon in the ore.

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

Attending the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting and exhibit has become an annual tradition for many in the mining industry. Similar to last year’s synopsis, this report is an overview of the 2003 conference from the eyes of a consulting mineralogist. It is supplemented by conversations with other participants. And it examines the conference handouts. Certain segments of the mining industry have seen improvement throughout the year in terms of metal prices, stronger demand and renewed interest by the investment community. Other segments continue their decline due to depressed commodity prices, higher oil prices, a continued weakness in the global economy and war uncertainties. SARS was known to the world, but it was not a Toronto epidemic during PDAC. In short, this year’s PDAC was permeated by an air of anxiety about the Middle East.

Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. Much of the scientific uncertainty and public concern over mineral fibers in Minnesota?s taconite industry remain today. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. An OCS Expert control system was implemented by Svedala Cisa at the Minera Maricunga Refugio Crush-Leach Operation near Copiapo, Chile. The purpose of the Expert system was to maximize production through the primary and secondary crushing circuits and help balance crusher usage between each stage to maximize total plant production. Interesting aspects of the control strategies are discussed. Benefits of the control were verified through a randomized On/Off test program. Tonnage increases ranged from 5% to approximately 20% at good confidence intervals. Benefits analysis results are discussed. The crushing plant at Refugio is very remote and is located at approximately 15,500 ft. This poses many challenges. The effect of altitude and remote location on plant operation are discussed.

More than 410,000 visitors from 171 countries helped bauma ’04 set new attendance records at the world’s largest construction machinery and mining technology show. The show, held in Munich, Germany March 29-April 4, marked bauma’s 50th anniversary. At the last bauma show in 2001, attendance was about 406,000 people from 157 countries. At bauma ’04, international attendance increased to 31 percent from 27 percent in 2001. In addition to record-setting attendance, bauma ’04also attracted 2,801 exhibitors, up from 2,341 in 2001. Exhibitors came from the United States, Europe, China, Japan and the Middle East. Exhibitor space topped 500,000m2 (5.4 million sq ft), another record. And, for the first time, there were more foreign exhibitors than German exhibitors, show organizers said.

Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have recently been installed at Mosaic?s South Fort Meade beneficiation plant for the purpose of improving phosphate recovery and throughput capacity. This technology was implemented after numerous laboratory, bench-scale and on-site, pilot-scale test campaigns. The results from this detailed test work provided sufficient justification for the complete retrofit of the existing coarse and ultra-coarse flotation cells. Data indicate that the metallurgical results obtained with the full-scale separators are consistent with that obtained during both the bench- and pilot-scale evaluations. The benefits, theory of operation and commissioning of the equipment are also discussed.

Mining has one of the highest annual average fatality rates among major US industries. Health and safety dangers have been inherent to mining since the early days of picks and shovels. Even though miners’ health and safety has improved over the years, mining is still one of the most dangerous occupations. Mining was traditionally a low tech industry. It is now driven by competitive pressures to go high-tech by using programmable electronics (PE) for machine control, atmospheric monitoring and material processing. The industry’s experience with the functional safety of PE is limited compared with other industries. Thus, PE is an emerging technology for mining that can potentially create or worsen hazards.

Understanding relationships between mineralogy, texture, microstructural features, and element distribution and residence in minerals, is critical for accurate modeling of mineral weathering in waste-rock piles. The morphology of minerals and deformation structures, such as veins and faults, are important factors that control: (1) fluid access to the mineral surface to initiate dissolution, (2) the distribution of trace elements, and (3) formation of secondary minerals. We characterized the mineralogy, textures, and chemical properties of waste-rock material at three sites at scales ranging from outcrop to micrometer scale. A comprehensive hand-sample to thin-section scale methodology utilizing light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe, and laser ablation ICP-MS was used to thoroughly characterize the waste-rock material.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) development continues to take on not only larger diameters, but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar have required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunneling machines that can safely excavate the tunnel in an efficient, cost-effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This article reviews the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied. The world?s growing population and rapidly proceeding urbanization are boosting an enormous demand for new and high-capacity infrastructures to secure the mobility of goods and people. Densely populated areas face the challenge of providing efficient traffic infrastructure such as a modern public transport system. At the same time, the maintenance and modernization of supply and disposal structures for water, sewage, energy and communication are essential. Last but not least, are supra-regional transportation routes such as long distance water diversion schemes. All of these projects are as demanding and are characterized by a tight time schedule. In this context, the demand for efficient tunnels for traffic and utility lines is increasing, as new infrastructures often leads underground because of limited space above ground. Also, tunnels are the obvious choice to cross natural barriers like mountain ranges. To handle the complex and variable geological conditions and other constraints, such as low overburden, high water pressure or long tunnel drives while facing increasing demand of a quick completion of a project, mechanized tunneling sets standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection in traffic tunneling projects as well as in the trenchless construction of utility tunnels. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to master various geological and hydrogeological requirements. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant improvement of the mechanized tunneling process.

INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. Ball Clay Four companies ? H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Lhoist Group), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys Group), Old Hickory Clay, and Unimin Corp. ? mined ball clay in four states in 2008. Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. That was a 10- percent decrease in tonnage from 1.07 Mt (1.2 mil-lion st) with a value of $49.2 million that was produced in 2007. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.
