Bentonites are clay materials composed principally of minerals in the montmorillonite group. Distinctive physical properties of the montmorillonite minerals are responsible for selected bentonite deposits having become the raw materials source of industrial clay products which are virtually essential to the maintenance of high production standards in the petroleum, foundry, taconite and other basic industries. These versatile materials have no suitable substitutes in either their major applications or in hundreds of speciality products, The economics of the bentonite mining industry follows closely the established pattern of other non-metallic raw materials. Aggressive competition, advanced technologies, progressive marketing techniques, substantial reserves, and vast unmeasured resources insure the continued supply of high quality bentonite to industry at bargain prices. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the geology and economics of bentonite deposits, summarize both major domestic mining districts and foreign deposits, and report significant results of research and development.

In underground mining operations, the over- riding issue has to be protection of worker health and safety. The employees underground, making a living in a dangerous occupation, know these are major issues. These men bargain their lives and health on the presumption that the operating management knows its business, and they, the underground employees, can pursue their occupation with the assurance that management has provided a safe and healthy ambient underground environment. When management assumes the mantle of protection of underground workers, it has to be positive that qualified engineers have designed the project, and that capable operating personnel are in charge and always available. Those persons with these responsibilities must be knowledgeable in the engineering and occupational health aspects of sine ventilation. The ultimate function of a mine ventilation system is to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe ambient environment for the underground workers. The attainment of these objectives has been complicated with the increased application of electrical equipment and diesel-powered mechanized mining equipment underground (discharging toxic diesel emissions); increased production rates with the attendant increased production of airborne dust; and mine development in increasingly hostile mineral formations containing combustible strata gases, radon gas emissions, along with high heat and humidity. In general, the modern mechanization of present mining operations has resulted in a sore complex set of problems for the engineer planning the underground ambient environment.

Swelling ground is one of the most feared problem in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and long- lasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners of up to 1 m that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at a rate of 0.1 m per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This author (Einstein (1979). Einstein et al. (1972) (1975)) and others (Huller (19761, Grob (1972) (1976). Golta (1967), tienke (19761, Krause (1976). Lee et al. (1976)) have described many cases of swelling tunnels that illustrate the significance and magnitude of the problem. This paper intends to show that tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. . For this purpose the tunnel builder needs to know how to determine the existence and specific behavior of swelling ground, how to select appropriate structural characteristics of the tunnel and predict its performance under the specific ground conditions, and finally how to construct the tunnel such that the anticipated performance will be achieved. This concept of a design-construction procedure is the same as that for tunneling in general; it is mentioned here for NO reasons: 1. To point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way in which the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. 2. This paper will be structured corresponding to the procedural concept.

The Environmental Session will consist of five papers dealing with various aspects of trace elements associated with coal. Analytical procedures to determine the amounts of trace elements will be discussed. Other papers will deal with trace elements in streams downstream from coal mines, potential pollution from wastes from coal preparation plants, potential recovery of trace elements, and potential pollution from trace elements as a result of the combustion of coal.

The primary use of coal in the US is for electric generation. The problems associated with the use of this vast amount of coal is the central theme of these sessions. The problems discussed include: production capacity, mining problems, coal cleaning, transportation, combustion, and various environmental problems, such as health effects of coal combustion, water and air pollution, and solid waste disposal.

In spite of potential theoretical and economic advantages of large-diameter ball mills, many manufacturers elect not to build these mills owing to what is perceived as an excessively large design risk. This risk results from the fact that traditional predictions for mill-scale-up to large diameters are not always accurate. It is apparent that alternative methods of analysis and scale-up are required. Recent studies have shown that detailed population balance models which account for important grinding subprocesses, i.e., grinding kinetics, material transport, and classification, are capable of predicting the performance of small- and intermediate diameter mills (up to 4.3 m (14 ft)) from small-scale batch tests. These same models are used in the current study to predict the performance of a "borderline" large ball mill (4.7x5.5 m) at Asarco's Sacaton operation, a ball mill (5.0x5.8 m) at Kennecott's Chino operation, and one of the world's largest ball mills (5.5x6.1 m), at Cities Service Pinto Valley operation. Model parameters required for scale-up have been estimated in a 380-mm diameter batch mill. Predictions are compared with the results of detailed plant sampling in the three plants. For the Sacaton and Chino operations, the error of the predictions was found to be less than 2.5%, while the corresponding error for the Pinto Valley operation was less than 2.7%. It is concluded that proper representation of the major subprocesses of grinding in the model equation is the key to achieving accurate scale-up. Of special importance is the need to account for the size distribution of the grinding media and the influence of the size distribution environment in the mill on grinding kinetics.

The subject of surface mine development is large. This section covers the fundamental concepts involved in both the open pit mining of thick or steeply dipping deposits as well as the strip mining of thin, shallow, and relatively flat-lying seams or beds. Design involves the marrying of geometries, ore and waste characteristics, equipment, and economics so that the desired result is achieved. Generally, there are many possible combinations from which to choose. For example, extraction over a short time period requires one strategy while quite another is applied for longer times. Variations in supply and demand require some flexibility of operation. Customer requirements impose certain constraints regarding the set of possible designs. Over recent years, planning and operating considerations for surface mining imposed by environmental requirements have increased markedly. There have, at the same time, been enormous advances made in the design aids available to the mine planner. Computer simulation of the various options, whether it be for mine design or equipment selection, provides detailed information for decision making in real time. A significant challenge to the engineer/planner is how to best use the aids avail-able. Because of the widespread use of commercially available and in-house computer software by industry, this section does not deal with the details of planning (for basic coverage of mine development, see Section 7). Rather, some of the basic concepts are stressed. The principles involved in equipment sizing and selection are discussed. A highly important but sometimes over-looked aspect of planning, haul road design, is also covered. For surface mining operations of the future, in-pit crushing and conveying will become even more important. Some of the considerations for application evaluation are included. The section concludes with some future concepts for surface mining.

This section deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of mining the evaluation of mine investment opportunities. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.
