This paper presents a case history of design, prediction, probe and production pile driving monitoring, loading test, and installation of piles for a 22-story condominium tower in southwest Florida, U.S.A. ASC was commissioned to provide value engineering services in the proper selection of an economical and satisfactory foundation system. For the site-specific subsoil conditions, various types of foundations were considered and following an evaluation of high structural loads, site-specific constraints, and the production timeframe mandated by the project owner, a prestressed concrete pile-supported system was selected as an economical and effective foundation approach. The building foundations were designed for a compression capacity of 575 kN (65 tons) for the tower and 220 kN (25 tons) for the parking structure. The axial pile capacity and lengths were predicted using SPT91 software. The validation of these capacities was derived from driving 21 probe piles and performing static loading tests on selected probe piles (2 in compression and 1 in tension). The predicted pile capacities were evaluated with results from static loading tests on selected probe piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of an overall quality control program to install a total of over 920 prestressed concrete piles to lengths ranging from 11.5 to 16.5 m (37 to 54 ft) below existing ground elevation as part of the foundation support system.

ABSTRACT Testing the effects of bubble size (Db) in a Mo cleaning ?otation column at Highland Valley Copper mine indicated that increasing the proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles signi?cantly improved column metallurgical response, compared to typical operation. The results were a three- to four-fold Mo recovery increase and a 1 to 2% Mo (absolute) concentrate grade increase. The improvedcolumn operation produced a 4% Mo plant recovery increase. This study also showed that modelling the ?otation rate constant (k) as an inverse square function of Db was more accurate than considering k to be inversely proportional to Db.

The objective of this work was to provide process engineers with values of the physical properties of various slag systems involved in high-temperature processes. Software that calculates the thermo-physical properties of slags from chemical composition is available on the www.pyrometallurgy.co.za website. This paper outlines the principles underlying the various models available in the program. The software calculates the following properties of crystalline, glassy, and liquid slags (where appropriate) as a function of temperature: heat capacity, enthalpy, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and surface tension. We hope, in the future, to update the program to (i) add new models as they become available, (ii) remove any ?bugs? discovered in existing programs, and (iii) provide guidance on the limitations of individual programs.

A description is given of an investigation into the feasibility of using controlled recirculation of warm exhaust air into the cold intake air of underground mines during winter. Canadian mines can experience inlet air temperatures of minus 30 ¦C and less, requiring them to pre-heat their intake air. The use of controlled recirculation would reduce the inlet air quantity and thus reduce heating costs which exceed $1M on some mines.

ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

The comminution circuit at Tarkwa Gold Mine was commissioned as a Single Stage SAG mill operated in closed circuit with hydrocyclones designed to process 4Mtpa. The circuit was later expanded by adding a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones with a view to treat 12Mtpa. The change in the circuit configuration and assigning the low aspect ratio SAG mill for primary grinding application makes the Tarkwa experience unique in terms the optimisation strategy and operating philosophy. This paper reports the findings from a series of surveys performed on this plant. The surveys reported include data obtained when the SAG mill was operated as a single stage mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones and also SABC mode under two different feed conditions. The differences in operating philosophy between the initial single stage SAG circuit and the current SAG/Ball mill circuit are discussed.

SEQUACHEE Valley includes portions of the counties of Marion, Sequachee, Bledsoe and Cumberland. It extends in a general direction parallel with the Great Valley of East Tennessee, some 75 miles northward from the Alabama state line. The genesis of the valley, geologically speaking, is simple. It is an erosion-valley along the axis of an anticlinal. "An experiment (mixture) design was created to optimize the process parameters of the electrochemical reduction of CaW04 to W in molten CaCl2-NaCl eutectic mixture. Temperature, applied voltage and the length of Kanthal wire winding of the CaW04 pellets were selected as the process parameters that were allowed to vary between the predetermined minimum and maximum values. The rates of the electrochemical reductions were interpreted from the variations of current and total charge vs. time graphs under different conditions. The analysis pointed out that 640°C and 2.81 V resulted in the fastest reduction. Itwas seen that the effect of Kanthal wire winding on the output current was less pronounced when compared to the other two parameters.IntroductionFFC Cambridge Process [1] has been applied to a number of metal oxides in laboratory experiments to produce metals. The study done in Dofia In&s de Collahuasi aims to improve the fragmentation in one of the most difficult rocks to deal with in an operation, It is the Ignimbrita. In order to avoid ejections and to increase the efficiency of the explosive it has been obtained an improvement in the stemming quality by using the Blasting Optimisation Program in Ignimbrita. Different materials were used in the stemming. In 1997 it was used soil material (Paleorrelleno), then in 1999 started the use of crushed gravel and during this year it is being implemented the utilisation of Stemtite only loaded with drill cutting. The first improvement was obtained with the utilisation of gravel, yielding good fragmentation results in comparison with the stemming with detritus material. The stemtite has made easier the blasting operation and it has signiticantly improved the fragmentation.

A number of standard tests are conventionally carried out to characterise strength properties of rock. The values of the parameters obtained are often affected by planes of weakness or defects in rock structure. For the purpose of mine design, the range in values or the class of the strength (obtained from a number of tests) is generally more important than a precise value (obtained from a single or limited number of tests). Research has been conducted to establish a relationship between an indentation index and the strength of the intact rock material from the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The Tamrock Raise Boring Index (RB-i) test, which is quick and easy to perform, was selected as the indentation test. The results show that, for heterogeneous, strong to very strong rock, there is a good correlation between the indentation index and the uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere&apos;s obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. This precludes the user from having to deal in absolute delay times. The connecting system enables benches to be hooked-up speedily by multiple users who have differing levels of experience. This paper provides details of how, after 33 months, the system has been embraced by the project by aiding in maximised advances, improved cycle times and meeting the required environmental constraints.

Development of the process from the pilot stage to the current operation of the Capel, W.A. plant is briefly described. The design criteria for a larger sized plant are discussed together with factors that relate suitable feedstocks and coal types to the capital cost, capacity and product grade of future plants at locations other than Capel. The application of the process to the direct reduction of iron ores is briefly discussed including its commercial application at Rockwood, Tennessee.

Ore fragmentation at the DOZ block cave mine is highly variable, both as a function of rock type and column height of draw. Initially, the mine was constructed and equipped with limited capability to handle drawpoint oversize material. Significant issues with drawpoint availability and achieving overall mine production targets resulted. A suite of secondary sizing tools was added to the mine equipment fleet over a one-year time frame. Although significant oversize continues to be experienced, use of the correct secondary breakage tool for each particular oversize or hang-up occurrence has resulted in increased drawpoint availability, production rate, draw compliance, and operator safety. Currently, a range of secondary breakage techniques is being utilised to size material for delivery to the primary crusher. Run-of-mine material (3) is directly mucked to ore passes fitted with grizzlys that have one-metre square openings. Ore containing small boulders (>1 m3, 3) is loader-trammed to ore passes fitted with rockbreakers. Medium-sized boulders (>2 m3) accessible from the drawpoint are drilled with Sandvik Tamrock Commando drills. Boulders hung-up within the drawbell are drilled and charged with a Sandvik Tamrock Secondary Breakage Unit. Compacted, fine-grained muck is blasted utilising 55 mm cartridge powder concussion bombs.

A review is given of progress made to- wards the development of personal gravimetric dust sampling for risk assessment on South African gold mines. The present strategy is critically examined on the basis of principles for assessing health hazard from dust exposure. Reasons are advanced for replacing the konimeter with a gravimetric system based on full shift personal sampling. Constraints imposed by local characteristics of gold mines are used to illustrate the difficulty in finding suitable instrumentation for measuring personal exposure to respirable silica.
