Although the main features of the transformations occurring in 18-8 have been published already, certain conclusions merit questioning and discussion. The questions may be summarized as follows : 1. If ferrite is formed by cold-working austenite, what happens to the carbon with which the ferrite and austenitc are both presumably supersaturated? 2. What is the nature of the alpha-ferrite formed at grain boundarices by chromium-carbide precipitation at these boundaries?

About six years ago the writer had occasion to visit a large magnetic iron-ore concentrating-plant, and then saw for the first time rubber belts employed for conveying-purposes. These belts were from 20 inches to 30 inches in width, and some of them were as long as 500 feet between centers. When I spoke of the enormous amount of material they handled with a small expenditure of power, the superintendent assented, but at the same time complained that although he bought the best quality of belts, the abrasion of the ore wore them out very rapidly, causing continually very large bills for repairs and renewals. On close examination several interesting points were discovered :

Ten small and intermediate-sized (4.5 Mg/hr to 113 Mg/hr steam--10,000 to 250,000 lb per hr) coal-fired boilers in the upper Midwest have each been tested on both a bituminous eastern coal and a subbituminous western coal. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of substituting western subbituminous coal for eastern bituminous coal as a means of reducing the SO, emissions from this class of boiler and to demonstrate the feasibility of greatly expanded western coal utilization as a means of reducing the use of oil and gas. The scope of this study was such that the representative boiler types were tested on both eastern and western coal for a period of time sufficient to completely characterize their individual emission and operational characteristics.

INTRODUCTION A technique is needed to apply the flotation method successfully to apply the flotation method successfully to low grade and complex ore bearing hard-to-float oxide minerals. Thus it is necessary to find a new selective, powerful collector or to develop a new flotation process. Some attempts to use two or more kinds of collectors combined in flotation have been made but the principle of the reaction between the collectors used and the surface of mineral as well as the effect of combined collectors on flotation has not yet been fully understood. As part of the study on the improvement of selective collection in flotation, we have been investigating the flotation of minerals using two kinds of organic reagents, one of which is a conventional collector. We found xanthates were able to adsorb even onto the surface of oxide mineral, with the help of another organic reagent, e.g. a chelate compound (1). Furthermore, a notable effect of combined reagents such as the xanthate-amino acid combination (2) was found on the reagent adsorption phenomena and the collection phenomena, depending on the combination of reagents. The present study was carried out to clarify the effects of adding two kinds of collectors to the collection of mineral in flotation in the following two cases: (1) joint use of xanthate and di-alkyl dithiophosphate for galena collection and (2) joint use of a cationic collector with xanthate for scheelite collection.

THE Searles Lake orebody is located in the north- west corner of San Bernardino County. It is a dry lake bed with an exposed salt surface covering an area of 12 square miles. Recoverable mineral values are contained in the mother liquor below the surface of the lake. Stratification in the lake bed has separated the brine into two bodies which differ in composition. Although liquor is processed from both bodies, this paper will discuss only the upper structure brine. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical cross-section of the two commercial orebodies. The orebody is composed of a porous salt deposit 70 to 90 ft deep. The upper structure is separated from the lower orebody by a 12 to 16-ft thick impervious mud seam, as shown in Fig. 1. These salt structures are composed of 55 pct solid-phase salts and 45 pct voids which are filled with the original mother liquor.

Only within the past few years have chemists recognized the importance of the fact, that comparatively large amounts of phosphorus may occur in the siliceous residue left from the acid treatment of iron-ores. We know of one case in which an ore contained about three times as much phosphorus in the insoluble, as in the soluble, form. It was disposed of at a premium, as an exceptionally high-grade Bessemer ore containing 0.010 per cent. of soluble phosphorus, while the insoluble phosphorus brought the total amount up to 0.040 per cent. The magnetite and specular hematite of the Lake Superior districts and the fine ores of the Mesabi range, as a rule, contain very small amounts of insoluble phosphorus. But the mining of the soft hematites and the progressive lowering of the phosphorus-limit in a strictly Bessemer ore, have combined to make the determination of insoluble phosphorus one of the routine-requirements in all analyses of Bessemer ores. The insoluble phosphorus is understood to be that pbosphorus which cannot be extracted by boiling hydrochloric acid of 1.1 specific gravity. The time given for the extraction of the soluble phosphorus will vary, of course, according to the nature of the ore. In ordinary practice the boiling is continued until the residue is white or only very slightly tinged with ferric oxide. This ordinarily takes from half an hour to an hour. The prolonged boiling of ores known to contain considerable quantities of insoluble phosphorus has failed to extract any appreciable amount of additional phosphorus. The presence of geothite in a hematite ore has been shown to strongly affect the time of heating to the firing temperature. The investigation of spalling of single pellets and of packed beds has enabled free water and goethite spalling to be identified as separate phenomena. In addition, it has been shown that even for an 18-in. deep bed of green balls, the free water and goethite drying periods can be considered separately. Based on this observation, a method of predicting production rate and hood temperature profile is presented. The method required knowledge of the ore goethite content, ore grind, and the green pellet bulk density. Laboratory results were found to be in good agreement with actual plant practice and have led to improved process performance.

One phase of Bureau of Mines research deals with reduction of primly respirable dust generated by bit cutting action at a coal seam face. This paper presents a summary of coal cutting technology addressing this problem. All aspects of the cutting system affecting miner health and safety are discussed. Cutting design concepts are considered that minimize dust generation, energy used, and Ignitions, while maintaining production. With present equipment, an operator can maintain production and minimize dust energy and conditions by cutting at maximum depth (maximum sumping or advance rate) at all times, at minimum rpm with fewest possible bits, and with lowest possible included bit tip angle, i.e., minimum bit wear.

Mines are interesting by reason of what they have done for man, or of what has been done for them by nature. Not all are interesting on both scores. Many profitable mines are commonplace to the geologist; and many presenting unique gcological conditions have been sad failures commercially. The Standard group at Bodie has produced in 25 years, $14,500,000, paying $5,000,000 in dividends.' On the other hand, this output has beeu mined (almost wholly above the 1,000-ft. level) from a system of more than 100 veins, ranging in thickness from 0.5 in. of ('specimen rock" to 30 ft, of clay and quartz; distributed through a zone about 2,000 ft, in width, and representing from three to five distinct periods of formation. This group, therefore, by reason of its industrial record as well as its geological features, may fairly be regarded as doubly interesting. The Bodie district occupies an island of recent (Tertiary) hornblende-andesite, surrounded by a complex of igneous rocks and breccias. The rapid advances on the mechanical side of blast-furnace practice have not always been accompanied by a proper appreciation of the metallurgical requirements. This is illustrated occasionally by the improper use of automatic barrow chargingdevices and bins (introduced at the expense of accuracy in weight), with ores of irregular composition or ores that have been poorly graded. The 100-ft. blast-furnace has not always been advantageous, and in many instances the increase in the number of tuyeres, from 8 or 12 to 20, has resulted in decreased output. The data pertaining to this division of blast-furnace practice are now sufficiently complete to allow inferences to be made. The use of fine ores has indicated the manner in which large outputs could be obtained, as it has emphasized the fact that intimacy of contact. between gases and ore, and coke and air, were more important than the time of exposnre. It was reasonable to suppose that if more points of contact were made between the air and the coke, their union would occur in a shorter period of time, and the coke would be burned more rapidly in the same-sized hearth, and an increased output thereby obtained. In consequence of this theory, many furnace men upon relining a furnace increased the number of tuyeres from 8 or 12 to 20, or even more, frequently with unfortunate results. The wire saw is a tool not less than 60 years old, probably nearer 100 years old. It was developed in Europe and is reputed to have originated in Belgium. Frombold is said to be the original patentee. Wire sawing equipment, as indicated in Fig. I, is very simple. It consists of a three-strand wire cable, usually pis or 1/4 in. in diameter, or a single flat ribbon of medium hard, tough, alloy steel twisted into a helix of those diameters, made to form an endless belt of any length up to several thousand feet. The wire is guided into the cut by sheaves mounted in slides on steel columns situated close to either end of the cut. The feed motion usually is controlled either by gravity or by hand-operated feed screws. The steel columns or "standards" range from 15 to 30 ft. in length. At the top is a swiveled arm supporting a sheave similar to the traveling sheave below. Immediately under the swivel-mounted sheave is a guy plate or collar with shackles attaching four chain or wire-rope guys with suitable tightening devices, or with two guys and two jack legs for supporting the standard vertically or at any desired anale. The usual drive is by a 10-hp. motor through a gear reducer, on which are Insti- two grooved sheaves, One of which is keyed and the other free running On the shaft. In the summer of 1961, the Anaconda Research staff and Kilborn Engineering Ltd. began a study to investigate the possibilities of using some form of autogenous grinding in the new concentrator which Anaconda was planning to erect at Butte, adjacent to their Berkeley pit. The following criteria applied to the project: 1) The Butte mill was to be able to handle 36,000 to 42,000 tpd of copper ore, taken from the Berkeley pit and adjacent underground mines. 2) The plant was to be built in six units. 3) It would be started up two units at a time. 4) Equipment from the Anaconda mill was available for use in the new location. 5) Tonnage would be maintained at Butte and Anaconda, with equipment being moved down as required. 6) The ore from the Berkeley pit was known to vary widely from place to place in the pit and to be generally soft and friable.

The apparatus described in this paper was designed by the writer, in the year 1869, for use in the laboratory of the " American Silver Steel Works," at Bridgeport, Conn., where only the vacuum-pump was erected ; but on two subsequent occasions I have had the combined vacuum-pump and table-blowpipe constructed as represented in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a general elevation of the apparatus, the air-chamber being sectioned vertically; Fig. 2, a plan of the air-chamber; Fig. 3, a vertical sectiotnal elevation of the vacuum-pump, the section being on line C L), of Fig. 4, which is a horizontal section on line A B, of Fig. 3. The vacuum-pump is constructed of copper, and consists of a vacuum-chamber, E, supported upon the upper expanded end of a vertical pipe, Q. The vacuum-chamber is provided with four nozzles, C, F, I, D (Fig. 4), two of which are shown in section at A, B (Fig. 3). Passing vertically through the centre of the vacuum-chamber E, is seen the water-supply pipe P, whose lower extremity incloses an internal pipe p, which is supported, and placed in communication with the vacuum-chamber E, by means of the two elliptical nozzles n, n. The upper part of the pipe p is closed by a conical cap, and its lower end is in the same plane with the extremity of the watersupply pipe P, within which it is placed. THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic indus-tries in the United, States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines1 in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. The United States produces about 40 per cent of the world's fluorspar, of which about 90 per cent comes from the Illinois and Kentucky deposits along the Ohio River.2 Further detailed information on the fluorspar industry in the United States is given by Hatmaker and Davis.28 Fluorspar is marketed according to the following relative quantities and specifications: Consump- Specifications, Per Cent Use Form tion in 1936, Per Cent CaF2 SiO2 Fe2O3 Metallurgical Gravel 79 +85 -5 or lump Ceramic.. Faulty rock dusting of the New Orient Mine at West Frankfort, Ill. was declared to have been the primary cause of the extent of the blast that killed 119 men on December 21. Walter Eadie, state director of mines and minerals, ascribed the explosion to the ignition of methane in a working place about a mile northwest of the shaft of the mine. The initiation of the combustion was either by a spark from electrical machinery or from men smoking in the mine. It was surmised that a train of empty cars stalled in a ventilation door, had caused sufficient disturbance in the ventilation system to permit accumulation of gases. The Federal Bureau of Mines said that the Illinois explosion was caused by an electrical spark that touched off the clouds of gas present because of the faulty ventilation equipment. The bureau report listed three conditions as primarily responsible: An inadequate ventilating system, operation of faulty electrical equipment and the presence of large accumulations of fine coal dust capable of exploding. "This coal dust, principally along roadways, was not removed from the mine or rendered inert by the application of sufficient rock dust," the report stated. Investigations showed that an even more disastrous blast was averted because the explosion eventually reached areas where it could expand into open workings and where enough rock dust had been applied to retard it.

AT the symposium on gases in metals held at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York in February, 1933, a suggestion was made1 that the term "gases in metals" as now employed is unsuitable as descriptive of the substances usually involved in that term. The Executive Committee of the Iron and Steel Division thereupon appointed a subcommittee, composed of the authors of this paper, to study the "nomenclature involved in the general subject of gases in metals, including the name itself" and to report its findings to the Executive Committee. The subcommittee decided at once to discuss the subject with an "Advisory Council" composed of representative metallurgists, metallographers and analytical and physical chemists in the Pittsburgh district.2 As a result of conferences held by the subcommittee and with the Council, a report with recommendations was submitted to the Executive Committee at an open meeting on Oct. 5, 1933, during the National Metals Congress in Detroit. The report and recommendations were accepted, and the subcommittee was instructed to proceed with the dissemination of the report for the purpose of having its recommendation generally adopted either as it was or in a modified form as a result of further discussion.

Greater, emphasis is being placed on recovering nickel from laterite ores by ammonia leaching techniques. New methods are required for lower cost, non-polluting techniques to separate more efficiently the metals of interest. Liquid ion exchange techniques meet these requirements with the added advantage of producing salable electrowon nickel cathodes at the plantsite. A complete solvent extraction- electrowinning process is described, including preliminary engineering and cost data for a typical plant producing 50 million pounds of nickel per year.

During the design phases of a conveyor system, the question arises regarding the type of drive required for each application. The paper shows that the correct drive for any particular application is the one that satisfies the criteria established for that application in the most economical manner consistent with such considerations as site location, availability of spare parts, area environmental conditions, power supplies available, etc. Following discussions of various mechanical arrangements for the drives, motor types and their characteristics are considered along with the control means of modifying these characteristics to satisfy individual requirements. These characteristics are all illustrated graphically. After selecting the motor and its starter, control accessories and interlocking arrangements as applied to material handling systems are discussed.
