THE importance of concentration of iron ores too low in grade to be smelted direct is shown by Table I, showing 1940 ship- [ ] ments from the Lake Superior district. Canadian ores are omitted. [ ] Only in Minnesota is concentrating, other than crushing and screening, practiced at present. Tonnage produced by various methods of concentration is shown in Table 2. The curves in Fig. I show the gradual increase in tonnage of concentrated ores shipped, compared with total shipments from Minnesota. Most of the concentration work is performed on the Mesabi Range. This range is about 100 miles long, and not over 3 miles wide from the line at which the formation tapers out to a feather edge on the north to the place on the south at which, some 600 ft. thick, it is overlain with slates. CLASSES OF ORE The Mesabi Range contains three classes of iron ore. First is the unaltered taconite, or banded iron-bearing chert. It is estimated that there are some 60 billion tons of this material, which contains, roughly, 25 to 30 per cent iron. This material is virtually untouched, since no commercially successful method has yet been found for concentrating it to a grade suitable for the blast furnace. Intensive experimental work is in progress, and the problem is gradually being solved. In 1922 the Mesabi Iron Co. spent several million dollars erecting a large-scale pilot plant for concentrating and sintering the magnetic taconites on the east end of the range. An important tonnage of high-grade sinter was shipped to lower lake furnaces, proving that the taconite can be concentrated to a satisfactory grade. 6.4-1. Principles of Operation. The jet-piercing process is a patented thermal process which depends upon a characteristic of the rock which is termed spallability. In its simplest terms, spalling is considered as decrepitation resulting from differential expansion of rock crystals due to thermally induced stresses. The number of individual properties influencing the spalling characteristics of rock are so numerous and their interaction so complex that the only truly reliable way to ascertain the spallability of rocks under thermal shock conditions is to expose them to these conditions. However, laboratory and field work have determined the principal thermal, physical, and mechanical properties of rock which affect spallability (10, 18). The approximate relationship between spallability and these characteristics is as follows: [ ] where To is the critical temperature at which, it is believed, a rock becomes elastic or sufficiently plastic to prevent further spalling action. Thermal diffusivity takes into account the amount of heat used in saturating the medium itself during the migration of a heat front. The rate and degree of dimensional changes which influence the spalling tendency of the rock will depend upon the characteristic of the heat gradient in the rock. The greater the spalling tendency, the higher the piercing rate. Those properties most favorable to a high degree of spallability are: 1. Large linear thermal expansion at temperatures below 700°C. 2. High thermal diffusivity at temperatures below 400°C. 3. Equigranular interlocking structure with little or no fine-grained clay or mica alteration products. 4. No significant amounts of soft, low-melting, or elastic mineral or materials which yield after thermal decomposition.

The principal events in the oil history of south Arkansas, north Louisiana and Mississippi in 1930 have been: In Arkansas, very little activity, except for discovery of deep oil production at Urbana, and completion of the first oil well in Miller County. In Louisiana, continued development of the Zwolle area, bringing production up to about 10,000 bbl. per day; practically complete development of the Carterville oil-producing area; discovery and drilling of the rather disappointing Holly area, and discovery of Trinity gas production at Sugar Creek, Claiborne Parish and Rodessa, Caddo Parish. In Mississippi, discovery of the Jackson gas field, in Hinds and Rankin counties. Proration of oil runs was not put in effect in these areas during 1930, because the natural decline of the older fields brought production below the demands of local markets. The only effect of the oversupply and low price of oil was the curtailment of some drilling which might otherwise have been done. Drilling in Arkansas reached the lowest stage since the discovery of oil, with less than 100 completions. Louisiana showed some increase in drilling over 1928 and 1929, but almost half of the wells were drilled primarily for gas rather than oil. As no review on north Louisiana production has been prepared since 1927, and there was none on south Arkansas for 1928, the developments of the three years, 1928, 1929 and 1930 are here briefly discussed.

It has been observed that where veins or other types of orebodies are intersected by cross faults, the continuation of the ore deposit below the fault is often of lower grade than that portion above the dislocation.' In some mines, the reverse of these conditions has been noted, and the richest ore is found to occur in that portion of the vein beneath the fault intersection. Such instances seem to be less frequent than those where the richest ore is above the offset. The important and widespread influence of fault and vein intersections upon the localization of ore shoots is well known,2 but the factors that govern the position of the ore shoot relative to the fault intersection seem to be less clearly understood. The richest ore may be above or below the fault, or it may occur at the point of intersection, or there may be no change. Recent observations made by the writer in mines in Idaho and Montana suggested a possible explanation for the changes in the richness of ore below certain types of fault intersections. These observations have been supplemented by a study of the literature containing detailed descriptions of ore deposits at a large number of mines in North America. The results of these studies are presented herewith in the hope that they may lead to further discussion of this important phase of ore deposition. Pure gold was deformed by wire drawing at room temperature and 78°K. After deformation at room temperature, the stored energy and the resistivity increment reached nearly constant levels at high strains, whereas the yield stress continued to increase with strain. After deformation at 78K, the stored energy, the reszstivity increment, and the yield stress were larger than after deformation at room temperature mzd increased continuously with strain. Annealing at THE stored energy and the changes in properties resulting from cold working of Au-Ag alloys by various processes have been the subject of a series of investigations in this laboratory.'-' The work reported here room temperature after deformation at 78°K did not affect the yield stress appreciably. The stored energy, resistivity increment, and Lncrease in yield stress after deformation at room te-lnperature can be explained primarily in lerrns of dislocations while point defects, as well as dislocations, contribute to the changes in these properties after deformalion at 78°K. extends this research to pure gold. The stored energy, the resistivity increment, and the tensile properties after deformation by wire drawing were measured as functions of the strain at room temperature and at 78°K. THE following notes were taken on a trip through northern Korea in the fall of 1910. We started with about 19 Korean ponies, and as many Koreans, from Shin Anju, on the railway from Seoul to Antung. We passed through the ancient walled city of Anju, and thence up the valley of the Anju river. We then crossed over to the north into the Kalsan drainage, thence over another divide to the Chasung river, and finally reached the old Korean copper-smelting camp of Tong Jom-in all a distance by trail of about 200 miles. The return trip was made with ponies to Mampochin on the Yalu river, and thence down the river in a junk to Antung. The route of travel is shown on the sketch map, Fig. 1.

The relation between the chemical composition and the refractoriness of fire-brick has long attracted the attention of manufacturers of fire-brick and others interested in their use, yet but little systematic work has been done along this line, especially in the United States. Analyses of fire-brick have been quoted for years, but fire-tests of brick, except those of durability in practical use, have usually been lacking. Although many tests and analyses of foreign fire-brick have been published, only a few have appeared in the United States; and even in the foreign literature, the references and facts are more or less scattered. The most elaborate foreign paper on the subject is that by Dr. Jochum.' One of the earliest, and perhaps the most detailed piece of work in the United States, is that of F. Platt, which was done for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, in 1876.2 His investigation consisted of the analysis and heat-tests of 21 bricks, the testing being made in an experimental shaft-furnace at Har-risburg, Pa. All the bricks were more or less affected at the temperature reached, which was considerably higher than the melting-point of steel. The exact temperature at which individual bricks fused was not ascertained, hence the comparisons quoted in the paper are of value only for the bricks used in the test. The next comprehensive investigation, made by the New Jersey Geological Survey,³ deals chiefly with fire-clays; analyses and refractory tests having been made of 123 clays, kaolins, feldspars and fire-sands. ONLY during the past few years, have the old-fashioned methods for treating ores and byproducts progressed to any marked degree. The advent of multiple-hearth roasting, blast roasting, the baghouse, and the Cottrell plant indicate this change. It is the ability to roast and smelt sulfide ores and concentrates that gave this later advance. Further investigations that will solve the problem of efficient handling of flotation concentrates and their attendant ills are of the utmost importance. With future developments, the metallurgist will be able to smelt more economically and to treat still more refractory ores, making the early methods appear small by comparison. GROWTH OF SMELTING Well within the memory of pioneer smeltermen, the ore was charged directly into the blast furnace as it came from the mine;, only the richer, ores were smelted, the lower grade and sulfide ores were undesirable. Matte was, at first, thrown away and only two products) were desired-slag and lead bullion. Scores of the early smelting companies failed because of improper reduction of ores, high costs, short- furnace campaigns, inability to treat sulfide ores, and ores containing-zinc. With the failure of weaker companies, consolidation eliminated many others, until today the field is dominated by a comparatively few organizations, each strong financially. Formerly, a few thousand dollars would erect a small plant, whereas the modern smelter costs over a million dollars. Ore and products to which formerly no attention was paid are now treated with comparative ease and at a good profit. Mechanical improvements have modernized smelting, furnace tonnages show an increase, and metal recoveries have made enormous strides. Even though costs have decreased, they have not dropped in proportion to the improvements, because of the higher wages, greater costs of fluxes and coke, more undesirable ores smelted, etc.

FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which. the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,000. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation', the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

AT THE end of the year 1914, the main North Star incline shaft had reached the 6300-ft. level, and encountered a vein dipping Southwest, or, exactly opposite to the North Star. Subsequent development failed to find the North Star vein continuing beyond this intersection, so the 6300-ft. level proved to be the bottom level of the North. Star vein, and very little ore was found below the 5300-ft. level. The new vein was called No. 1 vein. Development work carried on for the next 10 years discovered a third vein, called No. 2, branching off about 1200-ft. to the east, with a North-south strike and a west dip. No. 1 vein had about 900 ft. of backs above the 6300-ft. level before reaching the boundary line of the property, and No. 2 vein died out about 800 ft. above. During these 10 years, the money spent on development was increased from $54,000 in 1914 to $184,000 in 1924; the ore reserves steadily diminished until it was evident that the mine must close down unless by some means a large tonnage of ore could be developed quickly.

THE Western phosphate field, virtually ignored for 40 years, has been undergoing a rapid climb to economic importance. Until World War II there seemed to be no reason for developing the phosphate rock region of the Intermountain Empire. But the tremendously increased demand for food production and the needs of many branches of the chemical industry changed all that. Quite suddenly a report made by the U. S. Geological Survey at the turn of the century became important. The survey showed that 60 pet of the nation's phosphate reserves were in the western phosphate field. Simplot Fertilizer Co. was one of the first to become actively interested in the development of the area. In August, 1945 the company began exploration of the Phosphoria Formation on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The result was the Gay Mine, about 18 miles east of Indian Agency Headquarters at Fort Hall, Idaho, developed to supply high grade phosphate rock for processing into superphosphate fertilizer at the company's Pocatello plant. Six ft of high grade oolitic phosphate rock (ranging from 32.5 to 34.5 pet P2O5) were discovered at the base of the Phosphoria Formation by diamond drilling and dozer trenching. High quality and thickness, plus the fact that the formation lay flat and near the surface made strip and open pit mining possible. In one year of mining, starting June 1946, a total of 53,000 tons of main bed oolitic phosphate rock was hauled to Pocatello for processing into supersulphate. The first year's operation was in

Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type.1 Prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied.

The phosphate pebble-bearing matrix in the Florida Phosphate Pebble Field has physical properties which make it readily adaptable to hydraulic transportation methods employing solids-handling pumps and pipelines. The abundance of water available, a practically flat terrain, low costs per ton-mile, and beneficiation of the matrix by agitation while being pumped have contributed to the popular choice of hydraulic transportation. Phosphate pebble mining in Florida, begun in the 1860's, first used high pressure water and solids-handling pumps for overburden removal about 1900. Removal of the average 25 ft of overburden was followed by hydraulic mining of the matrix, with 6-in. and 8-in. pumps handling 50 to 100 cu yds per hour being moved along the floor of the pit as they were advanced toward the face being undercut and slurried by hydraulic guns.

This field in 1933 continued as in 1932, although to a much less extent, to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business. The 2466 producers completed in this field during the year are 28 per cent of such wells completed in the United States. The 2556 completions reported in the five counties within which the East Texas field lies are 21 per cent of all such wells reported in the United States. It follows that with such a command of the development situation, every other factor with regard to this field has an important bearing on the entire oil business. As a consequence, the important developments in the East Texas field are the important developments of the year. Very little new productive territory was added to the already known limits of this enormous field. On the other hand, drilling has shown that with a few very minor exceptions this field is a continuous productive area, with a regular outline and no "dry spots" other than that of a single well surrounded by producing wells. Drilling was confined to the already proven limits of the field. This consisted essentially of more adequate coverage of leases by wells, the meeting of required offsets and the drilling of a large number of small tracts which developed from subdivision of larger leases due to court action and other causes. The allowable throughout the year was, with minor variable factors, on a per-well basis. With the steady decline in per-well allowable after May, every operator was faced with declining

The Lead Smelting works of Metallurgie Hoboken S.A. are located on the banks of the river Scheldt a few miles South of Antwerp. Lead refining began at Hoboken in 1687, when it was restricted mainly to desilverizing lead bullion from Central America. Since then, various changes have been made to develop the works into a comprehensive and integrated custom smelter and refinery. Multiple hearth roasting furnaces, down-draft sinter machines and blast furnaces of standard design are used for the treatment of "complex" lead ores and secondary materials. A lead refinery based on the Harris process, with Parkes desilverizing followed by vacuum dezincing and Kroll Betterton debismuthizing was commissioned in 1967. Facilities for the recovery of precious metals, bismuth, antimony, arsenic and sulfuric acid are available. Special problems arise from the presence of large quantities of copper in the materials treated.

COMMON salt is mentioned in the most ancient writings as an impor-tant article of diet. It is fairly certain that it was used by men and animals long before the dawn of civilization. Its presence in natural springs has often been the determining factor in colonization; wars have been fought for possession of salt deposits; trade routes have been estab-lished expressly for the purpose of traffic in salt. Naturally this led men into adventures and discoveries that altered history and advanced civilization. In the early days the uses for salt were few and the methods of manu-facture were crude and the purity low when compared to salt of the pres-ent day. Then the salt came largely from springs, shallow wells or the ocean, while today deep wells must be drilled to the natural brines or beds of rock -salt and spacious shafts sunk so that the ancient deposits may be made to yield their supply of stored mineral.

The steel industry is facing an unprecedented challenge. I would like to point out the role that flotation technology could play in meeting this challenge by providing high quality raw materials to the steel industry. Of all the technology available to a blast furnace operator, raw material preparation is by far the most important. Raw material preparation has been a key to the success of the Japanese steel industry. The foremost proponent of better raw material preparation was Professor Joseph at Minnesota. He gave a Howe memorial lecture to the AIME audience in the early 1950s, prepared from the lecture notes that he gave in his classes. At about that time he was invited to Japan. It is ironic that the Japanese steel industry listened and made it a success. In order for our steel industry to be competitive, first we must supply high quality and uniform quality raw materials to improve the efficiencies of our blast furnaces. Where does flotation fit in to the iron ore industry then? First, as a primary means for concentrating for oxidized iron ores. Second, to touch up magnetite concentrates for the removal of the last few percent of silica. And third, in the preparation of super-concentrates for direct reduction.

The following notes are taken from results obtained on a standard 25-ft. Hancock jig1 tested during regular operation in the Bonne Terre mill of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The object of the tests was to determine the conditions for most effective work, and the nature of products that could be made. The material treated was sized between 9-mm. and 2-mm. round-hole screens, and was constant throughout the experiments. Three products were made, concentrates from the first three hutches, middlings from the fourth and fifth, and tailing from the sixth. The middlings were crushed in one pair of Allis-Chalmers Style B, 30 by 14-in. rolls, and elevated with the original ore to the 2-mm. screens, oversize of which formed the jig feed. While this arrangement was very simple, it gave rise to undesirable crowding of the circuit. Table 1 shows tonnage and assay values of the jig feed and products at the beginning of the experiments, and brings out the excessively large amount of middlings, comprising 63.3 per cent. of the total material fed to the jig. The rolls, being heavily overloaded, did very little crushing, a screen analysis of the product showing that only 27 per cent., or 128 tons, was crushed fine enough to pass to the tables. The remaining 347 tons returned to the jig with 400 tons of original ore. At .times, this overcrowding became much worse, and the tonnage in circuit grew to enormous proportions. THE mining .district is located in the northeasterly part of Nevada, between the Jarbidge River on the west and the East Fork of the Jarbidge on the east. The northern boundary of the district is but a few miles south of the Idaho state line-the gold-bearing area extending from this point south, for 5 or 6 miles. The Jarbidge Mountains, in which the ore deposits occur, range from 5000 to 11,000 ft. in elevation, the most important mines being situated about 7000 ft. or higher. The town of Jarbidge lies along the Jarbidge River and is reached by stage from Rogerson, Ida., the nearest railroad point. During the summer months, the camp may be entered from the south by way of Deeth, Nev., but no regular transportation facilities are available over this route. HISTORY The mineral deposits were not discovered until 1909, when D. A. Bourne, panning along the river bank, found gold in the gravel at the mouth of a small stream flowing into the Jarbidge. He prospected in the vicinity of this stream, later known as Bourne Gulch, and shortly after located the North Star claims. During the following spring and summer (1910), the camp of Jarbidge grew from nothing to a town of 2000 people and the hills surrounding it were practically all taken up by mining claims. Most of the work done during. the first year or two consisted of trenching and open-cut prospecting. Tunneling was started on a number of claims and many veins were uncovered. Mills were built and operated on a few properties, notably the Pavlak and the North Star. These ran only a few months, however, when they were closed down because of extraction and financial difficulties.
