Eveleth Taconite Co. was chartered on July 29, 1963, and is 85% owned by Ford Motor Co. and 15% by Oglebay Norton Co. The latter also serves as managing agent. The location of the company's facilities is depicted in Fig. 1. The Thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minn. (Fig. 2). The Fairlane plant and General Office are located approximately 10 miles south on the St. Louis River near the community of Forbes (Figs. 3 and 4). The crude ore and the finished pellets are transported by a common carrier railroad, the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. The facilities are also serviced by the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Railway Co. Pellets are hauled year around by the DM&IR to its docks 60 miles south in Duluth, Minn. Ford Motor Co. consumes its share of the high grade pellets at its Rouge plant in Dearborn, Mich., and Oglebay Norton Co. sells its share in the open market. HISTORY Following six months of preliminary engineering by the initial staff of Eveleth Taconite Co. and the Western Knapp Engineering Div. of Arthur G. McKee & Co., the project was approved by Eveleth's board of directors on Apr. 17, 1964. On May 1, 1964, contracts were awarded to McKee for the mine, coarse and fine crushing and concentrating facilities, and to Allis-Chalmer for the pelletizing facilities. When a new type of equipment revolutionizes methods of quarrying one kind of stone, producers of other kinds focus their attention on its potentialities in their particular fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accomplishments of the wire saw in slate, to show its more limited attainments in other kinds of stone, and to point out the possibilities of much wider application. A wire saw consists of a 3/16-in. or ji-in. three-strand wire cable that runs as a belt and cuts the rock by abrasion. (Fig. 1. The teeth of the saw are sand grains carried in the grooves between the strands. Accomplishments in Slate† Initial experiments with wire saws by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in the Colonial Slate Quarry, Wind Gap, Pa., in 1926, attained success so immediate and pronounced that within two years in virtually every quarry in the neighborhood of Wind Gap, Pen Argyl and Bangor, the most productive slate area in the United States, wire saws were substituted for channeling machines. An 80-ft. cut in slate is shown in Fig. 2. The technique of operation has been described in several reports (references at the end of the paper). The present purpose is to summarize the accomplishments in a large, typical slate quarry after nine. years of experience. Parsons Bros. Slate Co., at Pen Argyl, Pa., substituted two wire saws for six channeling machines in 1927. The following comparisons are made between the present method with wire saws and the former channel-ing-machine method. Rate of Sawing.—The average rate of cutting with a wire saw in the early days of its operation, as determined by the Bureau of Mines', wits 14 to 17 sq. ft. per hour. Parsons Bros. For various reasons I have not specified the locality where the research indicated in the following pages was undertaken. It will suffice to say that it was on the grounds of a villa once remote from, but now completely surrounded by, its neighboring city, and in close proximity to an industrial establishment of great extent and importance manufacturing many kinds of steel articles and employing upwards of thirty chimney-stacks for power and process work. The problem was to discover the cause or causes of the mortality to trees and plants on the place, and to trace these causes to their origin. Before undertaking this experimental work, the bibliography accompanying this paper was compiled and studied. It appears from an examination of the careful scientific work performed by the ablest French, German, and English chemists during the last 25 years that they are unanimous in assigning the principal—in fact, the overwhelmingly predominant— cause of the destruction of vegetation to sulphur oxides, resulting either from direct oxidation of sulphur in oil of vitriol works, etc., or from the oxidation of the sulphur from the minerals associated with commercial coal. Schroder and Schertel showed in 1884 that the sulphates deposited upon the leaves are not injurious to the plants; and Freytag proved that free sulphuric acid could not be found

The year 1928 has been marked by scattered but considerable wildcat drilling considering the overproduction prevalent in the oil industry. This wildcatting has resulted in the discovery of oil in one interior salt dome, several small fields producing from serpentine, Taylor marl, and Austin chalk, and two new fields producing from the Edwards limestone, one of which in the Bruner or Salt Flat area of Caldwell County promises to be of major importance if not quite as large as the Luling field. Fig. 1 shows production by fields for 1928, compared in the case of the older fields, with that for 1927. New Production From Salt Domes Boggy Creek Dome This salt dome was discovered in 1927 by core drilling and deep tests recommended on the evidence of surface geology. A large block of acreage controlled by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. covers the dome. Since the discovery of the deep-lying salt plug and oil on the flank of this dome in 1927, development has proceeded slowly. Since most of the acreage is controlled in a large block by one company there has been no intensive competitive drilling. Approximately 8 producers and 16 dry holes have been drilled. Production is from the eastern equivalent of the Woodbine and Eagleford horizons of the Mexia district, and has been found extending in a northeast-southnlest direction across the River Neches on the southeast flank of the dome. One of the best wells, the T. H. Jones No. 2, had an initial production of 90 bbl. per hr., and others have made from 100 bbl. per day to 50 bbl. per hr., but production of the better wells has either been shut in or choked down to less than 2000 bbl. per day. At the end of the year the daily average, production was about 2500 bbl. from 8 wells. Considerable gas pressure is present and one well, the Elliot Clark No. 2, drilled in 1927, was shut in with an estimated wet gas production of over 5,000,000 cubic feet.

It is proposed in this paper to discuss some of the chemical and physical principles involved in the manufacture and use of this important by-product obtained in the manufacture of steel by the basic process. The name, " phosphate slag," is adopted as a sort of compromise between "Thomas slag" and "tetrabasic phosphate." By the first of these latter names, viz., " Thomas slag," it is known in Germany, Austria, France, and the other continental countries, and in England, and is more easily apprehended by those who have no special Knowledge of chemistry, while the name " tetrabasic phosphate," being descriptive of the nature of the slag, is perhaps the best. It is but seldom that a discovery of such moment to two great industries is to be chronicled in the history of technical science. On the one hand, the manufacture of iron and steel has been greatly benefited, while on the other hand, the effects already noticed, and still to follow, to the agriculturalist, are of scarcely less conseqnence. The great majority of iron ores in the world, perhaps 90 per cent. of then), are now available for the steel manufacturer, while the manufacturer, and more especially the consumer, of artificial manures is relieved from the fear of the exhaustion of the crude phosphates. We have in phosphate slag, therefore, a product of the highest importance to those who make and we steel and fertilizers. Two great industries, which heretofore have had but little in common, are thus brought into close connection with each other, and the results sure to follow, if one may judge from the history of the past ten years, cannot fail to be of great and increasing value. These results may be compared with those which followed the introduction of the cupriferous Spanish pyrites into England for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The copper extracted greatly reduced the cost of the acid, hence that of artificial manures. Cheap manures meant better farming and cheaper farm products, and these meant better and cheaper living to nearly all classes of society. AT most mines where large tonnages are handled, "bulldozing" or secondary blasting is an important and costly operation. To reduce the large blocks from primary blasting operations or stoping so that they will be small enough to pass through the chutes into the cars at the haulage level, and not too large for the crushing plant, requires blasting. Often this is done by placing a few sticks of dynamite on top of a block with or without a capping of mud, but to consume less dynamite and to promote safety, most secondary blasting is now done by blockholing, or the drilling of holes 6 to 12 in. long in the blocks, using only a part of a stick of dynamite per hole. Regardless of the method of blasting, however, the term "bulldozing chamber" is applied to the room where this work is done. Bulldozing chambers permit secondary blasting at all times in a safe place without disturbance to the other mining operations. The chambers are usually high above the haulage level and well below the stope level or open-pit floor. In most instances the material is passed through a grizzly in the bulldozing chamber, but sometimes no grizzlies are used. One to four raises extend from the chamber to the stope floor and one or two from the haulage level to the chamber floor. Occasionally large slabs of ore or rock choke the raises above the bull-dozing chamber, and these have to be blasted by attaching a bundle of dynamite sticks on the end of a long pole and placing them up in the raise between the pieces causing the choke. This is called "chute-blasting." To give a picture of the progressive developments in the use of the bulldozing chamber, a few typical mines that show the application of this method to both metal and limestone mines have been selected for description here. Limestone mines have been included because many metal miners do not realize to what extent the nonmetallic, or rock, miners are now applying metal-mining methods successfully in their operations. The bulldozing chamber is the "neck of the bottle" for some mines.

The attention which this process has attracted, especially in Europe, has led me to believe that members of the Institute would be interested in a report of the progress which has been made in the year and a half that has elapsed since my paper on the subject was read at the Colorado Meeting of this Institute. As already described in that paper (Duns., xxvi., 380), this process is a modificatioii of the open-hearth steel manufacture, whether acid or basic, collsistillg essentially in the division of the charge between two furnaces, one of which is charged about two hours earlier than the other, and tapped into the other after the charge in the latter has become fluid, the slag of the first bath being removed from it during the transfer. This description still remains true as far as it goes, but further experience has demonstrated that circumstances will very materially modify the relation of the two furnaces to each other, and the character of the work done in each of them. The function of the primary furnace has become more clearly and entirely that of doing the rough work of desiliconiziug and dephosphorizing, while that of the second or finishing-furnace has become almost entirely that of decarburizing and finighing the heat. To indicate these developments and their results is the object of this paper. In order to avoid needless repetition, I shall try to accomplish part of this object by giving a short resume' of what has been published elsewhere on this subject since my former paper was read. This will at least enable those interested to study the matter for themselves from original sources. In 1839, Gerard Troost,1 the first State Geologist of Tennessee, reported the occurrence of zinc ores in east Tennessee, in connection with the iron ores at Embreeville; in 1844,2 he refers to the zinc deposits of east Tennessee, especially the apparently rich deposits occurring in Jefferson and Claiborne Counties, while his ninth annual report 3 s a description of the zinc deposits of Jefferson County and a description of the most improved processes by which zinc is extracted from its ores. Yet, only during the last few years have these ores been successfully worked. As far as can be learned, prior to the systematic development of the Mascot district in 1911, no large-scale or successful operation of any of the zinc deposits was carried on. But in that year, after several companies had made considerable progress in developing the Mascot area and had proved a relatively extensive body of low-grade sulfide ore, the American Zinc Co. entered the field. It introduced modern methods of prospecting and mining and from the first was successful. Too great credit cannot be given this company for its pioneer work in a previously unimportant field. Throughout the history of its operations, the American Zinc Co. has confined its efforts to underground mining of the sulfide ore, sphalerite. This company has found that successful results in zinc mining in east Tennessee can be achieved only by expending large sums in prospecting and blocking out bodies of pay ore in sufficient magnitude for large-scale operations. At Mascot are located the mines of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, the mines being situated along the Southern Railway in the Ilolston River Valley, Knox County, about 13 miles northeast of Knox-ville. At first only open pits, which were worked for oxidized ores, were operated and the production was small. In 1900, the Roseberry Zinc Co. was organized and sank to a depth of 187 ft. what is now known as No. 3 shaft of the American Zinc Co. The upper 30 ft. was in residual clay,

THE stratigraphical geology of the vicinity of Buffalo has always been of great interest on account of its bearing on the origin and history of the Niagara-river gorge, between the Falls and Lake Ontario. Recently, however, the character and thickness of the strata which underlie Buffalo have acquired more practical and economic importance on account of their relation to the possible occurrence of natural gas in commercial quantity near the Niagara river. In a paper presented at the Duluth meeting (l887), on " Petroleum and Natural Gas in New york State" (Trans., xvi., 906), I gave a brief description of the four wells which had been drilled by the Buffalo Cement Company between 1883 and that time. One of these wells is 1305 fret deep; and, at the time that my paper was finally revised for the Transactions (June, 1888), it was still an open question whether the drill in this well had reached the Niagara limestone, or had penetrated the Medina sandstones and shales, which latter are boldly exposed in a number of localities in the district, hut more particularly along the Niagara river in the vicinity of Lewiston and Qneenstown. The difficulty in this geological question at Buffalo has lain in the fact that no reliable determination could be made of the thickness of the strata included between the Corniferous limestone, immediately below which the drilling of the Buffalo gas-wells was commenced, and the Niagara limestone. On the other hand, the strata included between the latter limestone and the middle portion of the Medina sandstones and shales, have been minutely measured and studied in the Niagara gorge below the Falls by many American and European geologists. The first reliable section of these strata was constructed by Professor Eaton, and published in 1824 in his report on the Geological and Agricultural Survey of the District adjoining the Erie Canal. This section, extending from Lake Erie to Lewiston, is complete, with the exception that no thickness is given to the Salina or Onoudaga salt group,

It is with sincere regret that the members of the Institute will have heard of the death, on March 17th last, at Terre Haute, Ind., of Professor Charles 0. Thompson, A.M., Ph.D., President of the Rose Polytechnic Institute of that city, and for many years pre viously the head of the Worcester County (Mass.) Free Institute of Industrial Science, and in 1881 and 1882 one of the managers of this society. To us he was chiefly known by the excellent character of the work which he had performed, as a recognized leader among the technical educators of the country. He was a constant, and interested atten dant at our meetings, seeking to acquaint himself not less with all that was noteworthy in the practical attainments and developments of the branches of industry represented by our membership, than with such such facts as would be of service to him in shaping or guiding a wise course of instruction in the institutions of which he had charge. We shall not soon forget him, or the genial courtesy of his manner, or his ready words and thoughtful comments. Charles Oliver Thompson was born September 25th, 1836, at East Windsor Hill, Conn., where his father, Rev. William Thomp son, D.D., was professor in the Connecticut Theological Seminary, since removed to Hartford. The son was fitted for college under the late Paul A. Chadbourne, and entered Dartmouth College in 1854. He was graduated in 1858 with honors. In all the studies of his course he had maintained a high rank, but showed marked proficiency in chemistry and mechanical philosophy. In 1861 he received the degree of A.M., followed by that of Ph.D. from his own college in 1879, and from Williams in 1880. In September, 1858, the year of his graduation, he became principal of the Peacham Academy, Vt., remaining in that position until November of 1864, though during that period he devoted several months to practical work as a surveyor and civil engineer. Thus his experiences were developing the qualities which, later on, fitted him to carry out so successfully the plans of the thoughtful projectors of a new system of technical education, along a path before untrodden, but which the test of time and the indisputable proof of success have shown to be both wise and fruitful.

IN CIRCLES where mining men are wont to fraternize, a statement often heard is: "Yes, I spent six (or two, or ten, or thirty) years down at 'Chuqui.' " This means Chuquicamata, the site in Chile of what in all probability is the world's largest deposit of copper ore. One hears similar remarks regarding Braden and Andes, and, in fact, regarding a score of other big mines in South America, Africa, and elsewhere, but Chuqui seems to lead the others as the locale of engineers who have done a stint in foreign countries. One reason probably is that it is the Anaconda Company's premier foreign operation. Because of its unusual size and the diversity of its operations a great many men are needed. It is a sort of training school for young engineers; but, also, Anaconda has sent down a great many mature members of its big organization for special assignments like metallurgical research or plant construction. Chuquicamata is about 150 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at an elevation of 9,500 ft. It is in an almost rainless desert country where the wind (it is alleged by some) blows most of the time. However, the copper mining entrepreneurs have done their best to make up for what nature has neglected to do in creating a pleasant environment for the people who operate the mines. These include about 160 "foreigners" of whom 86 are from the United States, most of them accompanied by their families. There are 165 Chileans on the staff. Comforts, conveniences, and many luxuries are provided to offset in some measure the disagreeable features of the climate. Nevertheless, as I have implied, engineers at Chuqui generally jump at the chance to become "alumni" when opportunity offers. At the same time, they appear to take pride in their alma mater.

The application of chemical thermodynamic theory to high temperature aqueous systems is discussed as a basis for the explanation of thermal precipitation. The derivation of high temperature potential/ pH diagrams is briefly outlined in order to show a temperature/pH relationship for hydrolytic precipitation, which is an effect that is caused simply by heating an aqueous solution. Various examples of thermal precipitation are given, with particular reference to separation of metal values from leach solutions. Metal sulphate solutions are shown to precipitate basic sulphates, hydrated sulphates , oxides, hydroxides, and oxydroxides of the metal depending largely on the pH, the concentration of metal ion, and the concentration of sulphate or bisulphate. The CuS04-H2S04-H20 system is treated in some detail, and the separation of copper from other metal ions is investigated. Other separations involving Fe, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Cr are considered. Other advantages of thermal precipitation, such as the formation of high purity, large particle size and easily filterable materials, are presented. The kinetics of thermal precipitation are also briefly examined.

Austenite is often defined as a solid solution of carbon or carbide in a nonmagnetic form of iron. Conversely, magnetic measurements are often used by investigators for the purpose of detecting the degree of austenite decomposition after an iron alloy has been subjected to certain thermal or mechanical treatments. Association of the magnetic state with the gamma-phase decomposition is often extended to the alloys of iron with elements other than carbon. Definition of austenite as a nonmagnetic solid solution cannot be accepted in the light of available information without certain reservations. The relation of magnetic transformations with the gamma-phase decomposition in the complex alloys of iron has never been rigorously proved. The present investigation deals primarily with the magnetic transformation that occurs in carbon steels during the quenching process. The work was further limited to a study of magnetic transformation in carbon steels quenched at such rates as are necessary to retain the product of austenite decomposition in a martensitic state. Peevious Work Considerable information has accumulated in the literature with respect to the magnetic transformation in alloys of iron, but nearly all of it relates to transformations under the conditions of equilibrium between the phases of the alloy. ALTHOUGH the exclusion of foreigners and private owners from participation in the development of the. Russian oil fields prevents first-hand information being obtained, both official and private news indicate a growing appreciation of the value of the country's oil resources. Notwithstanding the suppression of that initiative and energy which only ambition can adequately stimulate, the industry is progressing and exports of products are assuming an importance that cannot be disregarded as an economic factor in the world's oil business. The following notes and observations must be regarded mainly as the views of one who has closely followed the fortunes of Russian oil, when considering the changes that have taken place in geological knowledge and oil-field technique, which have so profoundly modified oil-fields methods. Russia is fortunate in having retained the services of. a few scientists and technologists whose devotion to science has superseded their personal inclinations, and to these few men must be attributed the slow, but nevertheless striking, progress that has been made. The productive oil fields of Russia are centered around the Caspian Sea which, with its connected river system, constitutes such an ideal means of internal distribution for products. From the group of oilfields of which the. city of Baku forms a center, oil is pumped to Black-town, a suburb of Baku, where all the refineries are situated. The next important group of oil fields is located in the Terek district near Grosny, where refineries are erected and the products are piped or carried by tank cars to Petrovsk for the internal Russian market, or sent to the Black Sea by rail. A third oil field is spread over the province of Uralsk, north of the Caspian, Sea, the main port of outlet being Gourief, at the mouth of the River Ural. In Trans-Caspia there are two oil-field centers, one near Krasnovodsk on Chelekan Island, and one in Central Asia at Ferghana. The product of the former fields is transported to Baku for treatment, while the output of the Turkestan field is refined and consumed locally, mainly by the railway.

Recently modernized, the surface plant of the Outokumpu mine in Finland incorporates a number of ideas meriting close scrutiny from this side of the Atlantic. The mining methods make extensive use of concrete in some unusual ways. Design of the headframe and surface plant represents the latest thinking of European engineers and includes an integral Koepe hoist. The deposit is in eastern Finland, province of North Karelia, 30 miles west northwest of Joensuu and at 60'44' N, latitude. Pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite mineralization occurs in a shear zone in quartzite near a body of serpentinite. Two lenses have a total length over 12.000 ft, with remaining reserves of the 3 to 4 pct Cu ore estimated at about 15 million metric tons.

The mines of southeast Missouri's Lead Belt have been in operation since 1864, almost 100 years. During this period about 10 pct of the total ore available has been left in place as pillars, and this now represents the best ore reserve left to the older mines. St. Joseph Lead Co. has been investigating various plans of pillar recovery for several years. The example to be described is only one possible approach under a specific set of conditions. Conditions vary greatly in the different areas within the Lead Belt, and the same approach would be entirely inadequate in certain other areas, but there are important sections where this system is clearly applicable. Horizon mining is practiced in the Lead Belt, and stopes may vary from 10 ft to well over 100 ft high. Fig. 1 is a plan view of 6100 stope, the area to be discussed. For these mines this is a small stope, only 10 to 12 ft high. Before any plans were drawn up for pillar recovery, three independent estimates of the pillar grades were made by the mine superintendent, the mine captain, and the mine geologist. After these results were averaged, pillars indicated to be of economic grade were marked for removal as shown. At this stage several alternatives were considered: 1) retreat with caving, 2) concrete replacement pillars, and 3) systematic bolting and retreat. A retreating system with caving was not chosen because the roof was known to be too bad even to permit loading a blasted pillar before caving would begin. Concrete replacement pillars would have been too costly and would have required a large crew, bulky materials, and unwieldy equipment. Systematic bolting was chosen as being most acceptable for the following reasons: 1) Limited area and spans were involved. 2) Only minor modifications to the jumbo would be required for bolting. 3) Only a two-man bolting crew would be needed. 4) Only compact bolting materials would be required. 5) The bolting plan could be modified to allow

The application of hydrocarbon equilibrium data to various problems encountered in refining and in natural gasoline recovery is an old and well established practice. Both generalized data and data on specific hydrocarbon systems have been made available by a number of investigators. More recently such data have been applied to the relations governing the separation of oil and gas both in the reservoir and at the surface. Most of the applications to production problems, however, have been based upon examinations of surface samples of oil and gas. This paper describes a technique that has been used satisfactorily in a number of cases to calculate directly from the hydrocarbon analysis of and auxiliary laboratory data on a subsurface sample of the reservoir fluid the behavior of the oil and gas during the various stages of separation at the surface incident to production. Types of Information Calculated The system of calculations is not designed to supplant field data, but rather to correlate with them laboratory data obtained under controlled conditions in order to obtain a more complete and exact picture than usually is possible through the use of field data alone. The chief advantage of the calculations is the possibility of their use at a minimum of both time and expense to determine completely the effect of any possible operating technique upon each of the following: (1) The gas-oil ratio resulting from liberation of the dissolved gas; (2) the composition and gasoline content of the liberated gas; (3) the composition and gravity of the residual oil; (4) the amount and composition of the gas liberated upon flashing the oil from the separator to the stock tank; (5) the shrinkage of the oil in passing from the reservoir to the stock tank. This information is frequently essential to the correct determination of the advisability of installing a natural gasoline plant, to design such a plant to take care of seasonal production, and to determine the optimum separator pressures to carry in various parts of a field.

The economics of pressure tunnel design emphasize the utmost utilization of the least expensive pressure-resisting material available, namely, the rock surrounding the tunnel. A major difficulty in the design is the problem of transferring internal hydraulic pressure to the rock through a tunnel lining or membrane provided to maintain watertight conditions. The lining is necessary not only to prevent water loss, but to prevent the diffusion of water at high pressure through joints and fractures beyond the confines of the tunnel, an occurrence which could ultimately affect the stability of the rock mass through which the tunnel passes. Because of its toughness and ability to bridge localized areas of weakness, steel is used for a lining material whenever high internal pressures are involved. The steel lining is coupled to the surrounding rock mass through an annular ring of concrete backfill. It is paradoxical that the steel lining, needed primarily to assure water tightness, must of necessity be incorporated into the structure as a major pressure-resisting component, not to augment the bearing capacity of the concrete and rock, but to limit the strain for the safety and preservation of the steel lining itself. With the deformation modulus of the steel so much greater than that of the rock, the liner approaches its yield strength before the load capacity of the rock can be fully mobilized. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior of oil securities during the six-year period January 1932 through December 1937. This period was selected because of its varied character. It includes the depths of the depression, the broad and spasmodic recovery, and the recession collapse. The first part of the analysis is devoted to the correlation of a number of economic factors with an index of 13 oil stocks. The second part is a comparison of the different,ial behavior of 6 oil stocks. The relationships developed here are only a few of many that might be considered in a complete analysis. The stock market is regarded as a barometer of business confidence and as such exerts an important influence upon corporate policies, particularly upon industrial expansion. The complex and continuously changing nature of its price structure, the ebb and flow of influences and the effects of impacts require dynamic rather than static analysis. When treated in this way, many of the important fluctuations in market prices and changes in the relationships between securities appear quite logical. The market for oil securities has varied widely in recent years. The Standard Statistics index of 13 oil stocks made a bull market peak of 166.7 in September 1929. The collapse of the boom and the ensuing bear market finally carried the index down to a low of 36.4 in June 1932. From this point oil stocks made an irregular recovery; they reached a top at 139.7 in March 1937, and after maintaining this approximate level through August, declined precipitously to 93.3 in December 1937. The prices of these 13 oil stocks have gone up and down under the influence of numberless variables. These variables are of two kinds, those external to the industry, and those that are solely due to its internal condition. The external factors are political, social, and economic, both domestic and foreign. These are the influences that induce the ebb and flow of all prices in general and security prices in particular. Among the internal factors are the regulation of industry, the development of new reserves and processes, and the disequilibrium due to lack of balance between supply and demand. Some of the simpler relationships are examined in this paper.

Definition The term mineral inventory is a relatively new designation, born of the computer age and grown to common usage with the development of computer techniques for extending drill-hole sample values to regularly gridded data blocks representing in situ mineral values. The term has been generally accepted by geologists and engineers because it has a precise meaning which avoids many of the ambiguities of ore reserve. A mineral inventory is an estimated inventory of mineral in place and is usually achieved by dividing the deposit into regularly spaced gridded blocks to which are assigned estimated values using various extension techniques. A mineral Inventory makes no presumptions about the minability of the blocks or their cutoff grade. A mineral inventory estimate may be good or poor according to how much is known about the deposit, how extensively it has been sampled, and what techniques have been employed to assign estimated grade to the blocks Such an inventory, however, does not change with time, economic conditions, or mining technology, but only with new and better data and methods. Thus, the mineral Inventory is an excellent designation for describing mineral value distributron within a deposit's geological setting
