As the time allotted is short, we can present only a general idea of the oil laws in the Latin-American republics, as a supplement to Bulletin 206 of the Department of the Interior compiled under the direction of J. W. Thompson of the Bureau of Mines and entitled "Petroleum Laws of All America." We shall not discuss the European colonies in Latin-America nor the island republics. As to the countries discussed, we shall attempt to give the main features of such special petroleum legislation as has been adopted prior to the early part of this year; where no special petroleum laws exist, we must look to the mining codes for light on the petroleum policy. As the laws and regulations for the extraction of the metals are often difficult of application to, and are lacking in many essentials for, the petroleum industry, it is best for persons or companies desiring to enter, on a large scale, into the petroleum exploration and development of countries not having special petroleum legislation, to obtain a concession contract from the executive of the country under consideration, and to have the concession approved by the congress. If this concession, which would then be a special law, contains nothing contrary to the constitution of that country and does not infringe on vested rights of third parties, it should be reasonably safe. If in such country there is some doubt as to whether the petroleum subsoil is owned by the nation or the private surface owner, only public lands should be covered with the concession. Guatemala is the only republic in the group that discriminates directly against foreigners. Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela require waivers of diplomatic protection.' Colombia requires foreigners to agree to be bound by its alien law. In addition,Mexico makes it unlawful for foreigners to acquire direct ownership of real estate, including mines, within a zone of 50 km. along the coasts and one of 100 km. alongitsland

In any line of human activity logical handling requires an amount of attention to each phase that is in keeping with the importance of that phase. In the complex and rapidly changing field of modern ferrous metallurgy it is difficult to allot the proper degree of attention to the various subjects, and it is not surprising that one or more subjects of major importance should for a time be neglected. Bessemer steel is a good example of a neglected subject. It is largely taken for granted, inferior physical quality is assumed for it, and there is a • lack of interest in its technical development and commercial application. Availability of supply is limited. In spite of this technical indifference, limited source and lack of commercial exploitation, bessemer steel constitutes a large volume of tonnage in daily use. There is a fairly prevalent idea even among technical people that bessemer steel survives mostly because of low cost and by reason of a dwindling residue of applications sufficiently common to permit of its use. The difference in cost between bessemer and open-hearth steel is governed largely by the relative cost of manufacture of pig iron and the market price of steel scrap. During the past four years there have been long periods of time during which the price of steel scrap was low enough so that open-hearth steel was considerably lower in manufacturing cost than bessemer. As to application, it may be pointed out that thousands of tons of this material in the form of bessemer screw steel are applied for moving parts in automotive and other equipment. Some forging work and considerable heat-treating, particularly carburizing, is performed on this grade. Before the world-wide depression, the primary purpose of most blast-furnace operators was to produce a maximum tonnage of pig iron per day for each furnace in blast. Some attention was paid to the conservation of labor and raw materials, but the idea was well established that low-cost pig iron was attainable only when each furnace was producing a high tonnage. After the depression had set in, the picture changed considerably. Each blast-furnace operator was forced to run his plant in a manner that best fitted the economical set-up of his company. A great deal of thought was expended on the different methods of operation, always with the idea of making each product in a way that would best serve his company financially. Because of this abnormal condition, the blast-furnace man was compelled to indulge in various practices of which many had been believed to be next to impossible up to that time. The ultimate purpose of these innovations was either one or a combination of the following: 1. To produce only enough pig iron for immediate consumption at a minimum cost. 2. To produce gas for boiler or mill use to supplant some higher priced fuel. 3. To consume the coke produced at the coke plant, which was often viewed as a byproduct. 4. To protect the cash position of the company. These conditions were met by diverse methods, some of which were: 1. Slow or decreased wind. In some instances the blast blown was held as low as 25 per cent of the normal volume. 2. Intermittent operation, in which the furnaces were shut down or "fanned" at frequent intervals.

A previous publication1§ has described the effect of quenching stresses on the lattice parameter values of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys particularly with reference to the solution and precipitation of CuAl². A similar study has been made of the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Attention has been directed in the present investigation to the magnitude of the quenching stresses as affected by the specimen size and shape, the number of solute atoms and the quenching rate. The effect of cooling stresses in causing plastic defomation or cracking has been considered in relation to the physical properties of the alloy On reheating alloys in the two-phase field, the time required for precipitation to occur has been observed in connection with the degrec of supersaturation, the rate of diffusion of the solute atoms as a function of the comparative atomic radii, degree of strain, temperature of reheating and grain size. A few qualitative comparisons on the relative effect of these factors have been drawn between the aluminum-copper alloys and the aluminum-magnesium alloys. Strain in Solid-solution Alloys A 10 per cent magnesium alloy ill the form of chill-cast bars was furnished by the Aluminum Company of America through the courtesy of L. W. Kempf. Additional alloys were prepared using alllminum (99.95 per cent Al) and high-grade magnesium. The alloys listed in Table 1 were melted in an Acheson graphite crucible under a flux of fused MgCl², CaC12, NaCI. Chill-cast rods were sealed under vacuum in Pyrex glass, homogenized several days at 450' C., air-cooled and machined to rods of from 1/8 to ¾-in. dia. Sodium sulfide is used extensively to increase the recovery of oxidized copper and lead minerals by flotation, particularly when using xanthates as collectors. It is generally assumed that the sodium sulfide converts a film of the oxidized mineral to the sulfide, and that the xanthate, while not a very effective collector for the oxidized minerals, is a good collector for the sulfide. On the other hand, Taggart and his collaborators1 claim that unless sulfide minerals are oxidized they cannot adsorb xanthates and do not float. Gaudin2 states that amyl xanthate, used in conjunction with sodium sulfide, gives better results than ethyl xanthate. Rabone3 and Mayer-Schranz4 agree that excess of sulfide functions as a depressant. Owing to the greater solubilities of the oxidized minerals than of the sulfides, the consumption of sodium sulfide is greater than that of most other flotation reagents, up to 10 lb. per ton of ore being used in some plants. Luyken and Bierbrauer5 recommend a water washing to remove soluble heavy metal salts; by this means sulfide consumption may be reduced. It was desirable to determine the limits of the sulfide concentrations between which contact is possible at surfaces of anglesite and cerussite in xanthate solutions. Similar determinations were desirable for the sulfide minerals with which the oxidized minerals are usually associated, since conditions should be chosen, if possible, so that the two types of mineral will float together. Because of the formation, especially in acid solutions, of hydrogen sulfide and of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-), the permissible limits of sulfide addition are obviously dependent upon the pH value. Sphalerite responds to ethyl xanthate only in the presence of an activator; for example, copper sulfate. It was necessary, therefore, to determine whether sodium sulfide interferes with the activation of sphalerite by copper sulfate. The combined effect of sulfide and copper sulfate was determined also for galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite.

Measurements of the rate of decomposition of austenite at constant temperature are commonly represented by plotting the percentage transformed on linear coordinates against time on either a linear or a logarithmic scale, a method that yields a curve that in shape resembles an integral sign (Fig. 1). A graph of this kind is not always convenient because extrapolation to the beginning or end of the transformation, or even intebrpolation, may be uncertain unless there are a large number of observations, which seldom happens; furthermore, the degree of consistency of a set of measurements is difficult to judge from such a curve. It is desirable therefore to find some mode of plotting, or even better to find a standard variety of graph paper, that gives a straight line instead of the integral shape. The straight line has many advantages; the number of readings required to fix the position of the curve is greatly reduced, interpolatiorr is easy and rapid, extrapolation can be carried out with greater confidence and, finally, the consistency of the measurements is readily estimated from the scatter of the points. The last advantage is particularly valuable when the data are obtained by direct microscopic examination alone, because they are influenced by the skill of the observer in estimating the relative size of areas, possibly also by undetected inhomogeneity of the specimen. A search for ways of representing the observations as a straight line yielded two methods which are described in this paper. The paper also includes an account of some interesting relations brought to light in applying these methods to the available experimental data. Usually the best way to derive such a method of plotting is to base it on established principles of chemistry and physics, as has been done, for example, for the temperature variation of the equilibrium constant of a chemical reaction. But so little is known of the mechanism of the decomposition of austenite, and so little is available in the way of well established background for changes of this kind, that it is simpler to rely upon purely empirical means. The observations presented in this paper were recorded during a study of the spheroidizing process. Spheroidization of cementite in steel is either brought about to develop a set of desirable mechanical properties or is an incidental result of mechanical and heat-treating manipulations. Physical properties of steel are materially influenced by the state of the cementite. Conversion of cementite from the lamellar to the spheroidal state is usually accompanied by a decrease of hardness and of strength and by an increase in ductility. The spheroidized structure is usually considered as an ultimate step in the process of the softening of steel. The unorthodox hardening of a 3.5 per cent Ni steel (SAE No. 2330) after a heat-treatment that previously proved entirely suitable for a complete spheroidization of cementite in carbon steels led to the observations that constitute the subject of the present paper. Experimental Procedure The steels used for the experiments described were bought on the market. All were in the form of 3/4-in. round bars. Their chemical compositions are given in Table 1. The spheroidization of cementite in steels can be obtained in several ways. The method used in the present work is, perhaps, the least known. In a previous paper Burwell and Wulff1 have shown by electron diffraction studies that allotropic transformations can be induced in 18-8 stainless steel by polishing to a depth of about 5 X 10-5 cm. The development of a successful etching technique, which removes accountable amounts of metal from the surface without pitting and without changing the root-mean-square profile as measured with an Abbot pro-filometer, led to the application of the whole technique and material to an investigation of various mechanical methods of surface preparation, such as grinding, lapping, superfinishing and cold-rolling. Ideally suited to such a study is 18-8 of low carbon and nitrogen content. The material can be heat-treated to produce a coarse-grained single-phase structure. On cold deformation there occurs not only a reduction in grain size but, at regions of maximum stress, a change of face-centered material to body-centered material, provided the metal is worked below about 200°C. When worked between 200"about and 415°C., diffraction studies evidence a reduction in grain size without the appearance of any new body-centered ferrite. Ferrite, which can be referred also to strains induced by carbide precipitation, is evident when the material is worked at temperatures between 4150 and 800°C. Stainless steel is advantageous because the usual surface-finishing operations do not readily oxidize it to any appreciable depth. In order to produce detectable oxide films on the surface of austenitic 18-8 in a time equivalent to that required to produce, for example, a fine ground finish on 1/2 sq. in., the sample must be held in a furnace or oxygen stream above 600°C. By using longer heating times, it is possible to achieve measurable oxide films on samples , whose surface temperatures exceed only about 250°C. Experimental Procedure The apparatus, material, and technique described in the previous paper1 were employed in this investigation. Samples of 18-8, I by I cm. by 4 mm., were carefully annealed in the austenitic range to produce a coarse-grained structure. They were then quenched and pickled to remove scale, On a lapping machine of the Graton2 type, both sides of each sample were polished to a a of 1/6 a wave length of sodium D light. Thereafter they were electrolytically etched to remove at least 1 X 10-3 cm. of the surface, a depth that is well below that of any defermations induced by surface preparation. samples of this material, carefully mounted in steel holders, were then sent to various industrial organizations known for special finishing techniques. In the instrue ment shops at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology check samples were finished by the same methods, as far as they were available. Abbot profilometer3 readings Were made on all the samples, which were then carefully degreased in double distilled benzine and alcohol, dried in a hot-filtered air blast, and kept in a desiccator. IN 1929 one of the authors1 determined the constitution of copper-silicon-manganese alloys contailling over go per cent copper. Through a combination of circumstances the presence of the copper-silicon kappa phase was overlooked in both binary and ternary systems. In the binary system the omission has already been rectified.2,3 To establish the limits of this phase in the ternary system, the samples that had been heat-treated at the time of the original research have now been re-examined, using more careful technique. Full details of the compositions used and the temperatures and times of heat-treatment are to be found in the earlier paper.2 The etching reagent now used to distinguish the kappa phase had the following composition: hydrogen peroxide (30 vol.), 2o c.c.; water, 25 c.c.; 20 per cent potassium hydroxide solution, 5 c.c.; ammonium hydroxide (0.90 sp. gr.), 50 c.c. 'I'able I lists the newly observed structures. In virtually every case the constituents are the same as those previously recorded, except where kappa is now shown to be present as a result of the improved etching technique. X few other changes will be noted (No. 138 at 450°C., No. 147 at 550°C., Nos. 153 and 149 at 75o°C.). The change from liquid to beta in equilibrium with kappa in No. 137 at 800°C. is based upon newly heat-treated samples. The alloy is very near the solidus at 800°C. and probably there was a slight error in the old heat-treatment temperature. The isothermal phase diagrams shown in Figs. I to 6 were reconstructed on the basis of the new studies. The presence of manganese does not greatly change the composition limits of the kappa phase or cause the K-a + Y change to occur at a markedly different temperature. There is some uncertainty regarding the range of existence of beta, for alloys were not spaced very closely in composition. The proposed diagrams, however, are in accordance with the available experimental data and with the dictates of the phase rule. Theoretically necessary fields with no experimental points are delineated by dotted lines. The alpha boundaries at all temperatures are shown together in Fig. 7. This includes also some additional points on the alpha boundary at 300' and 350°C., which were obtained as a result of electrical-conductivity measurements. Two series of seven alloys with increasing manganese content but with silicon constant at 1.90 + 0.03 per cent or 2.42 ±. 0.05 per cent were cast in ingots of 3-in: diameter. These were hot-rolled, homogenized and drawn to wire, finished at 0.08-in. diameter with a 61 per cent reduction of area following annealing at 700°C. Conductivity determinations were made before and after annealing for 30 days at 300°C. or 21 days at 350°C. The high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as tcrne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys. 1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. Apparatus and Method The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from M to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.† After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been clamped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. + 0.1". Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge. Fully a decade ago, demand for ground mica began to exceed supplies of scrap mica from manufacturing operations and of waste block from feldspar and sheet mica mining in the United States, with the result that in recent years the market has absorbed larger and larger quantities of mica recovered as a by-product from clay washing,1 as a joint product with kyanite12 and by grinding schists. So far, only schists that contain a large percentage of mica have been utilized for making ground mica, but already there has been a good deal of wishful thinking with regard to recovering mica as an aid to the prospective working of low-grade gold ores and ores of certain base metals. With wet-ground mica selling at $60 to $100 a ton and even dry-ground mica worth over $20 a ton, many ores that could not be considered as otherwise workable under present conditions will show commercial possibilities if they can be made to yield even a relatively small percentage of salable mica. An interesting paper might be written on the coming role of industrial minerals as joint products of metal mines. It is largely a matter of markets. Many years ago I watched the mess left behind the gold dredges in the mountains of Colorado and thought of the Denver sand and gravel operators who prided themselves upon their canniness in providing devices for catching gold merely as an incident to their regular business of selling what we miners classed as "tailings." Nowadays almost every milling or mining operation near settled communities finds use for at least part of its waste for road material or concrete aggregate and several eastern iron mines have gone into the crushed-stone business. Promoters now mention fertilizer "filler" as potentially salable at all the way from $1 to $10 a ton, or whatever is needed to cover costs of mining and treating the "ore" and leave the metal values as "clear profit." The North Texas district, as' herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wilbarger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, usually are modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting those in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsyl-vanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1942 Approximately 500 wells were drilled in the district during 1942, in contrast with some 1600 wells drilled during 1941, and only some goo oil wells were completed, a decrease from 1941 of more than 10 per cent in the number of successful drilling operations of the total wells drilled. Production increased slightly over the previous year in spite of a decrease in the number of producing wells. The average depth of discovery wells was some 600 ft. deeper than in 1941. Although more discoveries produced from horizons above the base of the Strawn series than those below the Strawn, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone, and the Simpson and Ellenburger of the Ordovician, furnished most of the addition to oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was again in the Ellenburger formation in the K. M. A. field. During the year 47 wells were completed, bringing the total developed acreage in this horizon to some 5450 acres. The most active area was Montague County, in which eight fields, or potential fields, were discovered although only 39 oil wells were completed. K. M. A: Pressure Maintenance Satisfactory progress was made by the K. M. A. Pressure Maintenance Association in 1942, At the end of the year, 100 wells were being used for input and total monthly volume of gas returned to the reservoir reached a high of 430,971 M cu. ft. in December, with an input ratio of 587 cu. ft. of gas returned for each barrel of oil produced during the month. Explanations of the basic procedure for making earth-conductivity studies by the Eltran method have already appeared in several placeS. 1,2,3 In its essentials, this method consists of applying step functions of voltage to one pair of earth grounds and measuring the transient potential resulting at a separate pair of ground points. As previously pointed out,' the transient potential resulting from a suddenly applied steady voltage is the indicia1 transfer function of Carson1 6 which has been extensively studied in network theory. The discussion here, with one special exception, will ignore the problem of how the physical configuration of the earth affects the transient response voltage; it appears that this phase of the problem has been solved in only a few special cases having any direct bearing on the prospecting problem. Entirely distinct from the potential-theory aspect of the conductivity problem is the interesting material that can be had from studying the well-known network relations between cause and effect in linear circuits, and thus deducing criteria for the application of the several experimental methods available. To do this, only one assumption need be made about the nature of the earth. The earth is to be considered a linear conductor within the tolerance of ordinary measurements. The discussion will be restricted to collinear electrode configuration like that of Fig. I, since this is the only type of spread practical for use with driving currents that vary with time. Here one pair of grounds carries the driving current, and in line with these and external to them is a RECORDING Fair of potential probes. The problem will be to consider the relation between the different voltages appearing between the potential circuit terminals when various types of driving voltage sources are inserted in the current circuit. Suppose that the grounding points G, and G2 make good contact with the earth, and that a battery of sufficient voltage to produce one ampere of direct current is introduced into the current circuit by the closing of a switch. The potential transient response to such a voltage can be measured by taking an oscillogram at the potential Directors terminals, giving the time function that has been called A(l).4 This time function has been solved for analytically in the case of a homogeneous earth,"' and the

The conditions affecting the supply of casinghead gas, the different degrees of productivity, the difficulty of determining the quantities utilized, and the evaluation of the gas in casinghead-gasoline units and related data, having an economic bearing on the industry as a whole, are important questions and offer an interesting field for study. Casinghead-gas data have been gathered in some of the oil fields of Oklahoma where testing work has been done regularly and the volumes of casinghead gas were available. The area covered embraces 219 scattered leases in 29 townships, with a total of 18,039 acres and 1921 wells. The accompanying table gives specific locations of the areas under consideration, number of leases, range depth of wells, average age of production, sand depths and oil production data. The results of this investigation are set forth in the accompanying charts, showing volumes of casinghead gas in 6-month periods from Jan. 1, 1918, to June 30, 1921, when full record was available, production of casinghead gasoline, average productivity of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet, average price of the gas and the market price of the casinghead gasoline. The cases enumerated in the table and the data shown in the graphs do not represent the greater part of oil or casinghead gas production from any one township, nor are the leases contiguous. The properties in each township, however, may be considered as typical of general conditions, such as the date of completion of wells, depth, character, and thickness of oil sand, time of pumping, present oil production, Vacuum carried on wells, and usual operating practices. It was deemed advisable to subdivide the time into 6-mo. periods, as it was impracticable to make the tests more frequently, furthermore 6 mo. is probably the minimum period within which there would occur a noticeable increase in the productivity of the gas. It must be remembered that the figures on volumes are subject to the usual irregularities and relative inaccuracies of meter measurenlents of gas under varying degrees

Experimental results are given for the rate 0.f solution of nitrogen in y iron in the temperature range 1000° to 1200°C. It is shown that, when purified reacting gas is used, the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The difhsiuity of nitrogen in y iron is calculated from the results and the equation logD = —(8800/T) — 0.04 is recommended to represent the temperature dependence of the diffusivity. In some experiments using unpurified nitrogen, solution rates are found to be slower than those attributable to a solely solid-state diffusion process. Indications are that in the presence of impurities in the gas, e.g., H,O, chemisorption of nitrogen at the surface is hindered and becomes a rate-controlling process for the transfer of nitrogen across the gas -metal interface. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in y iron at known nitrogen activities has been well-established,'-a the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in iron are not known. The work of Darken, Smith, and Filer' indicates that at temperatures below about 1300°C the rate of solution of nitrogen in y iron is controlled by a chemical reaction at the metal surface, while at temperatures above about 1300°C the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. Fast and verrijps studied the denitro-genization of y iron using wet hydrogen at 950°C and their results clearly indicate that the rate of nitrogen removal is controlled by diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. In Part I of this series of papers, the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in y iron are discussed in the light of the present experimental work. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. The reaction chamber consisted of a platinum wire-wound resistance furnace with a re-crystallized alumina reaction tube. The temoerature of the furnace, which was automatically controlled to approximately 1°C, was measured with a Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and a potentiometer. The temperature distribution in the working zone of the furnace was determined using a calibrated Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and the hot zone was found to be approximately 3 in. long with a temperature variation of * 3°C. A series of experiments was also carried out at 1000°C and pressures above atmospheric using a pressure vessel which was similar in construction to that described elsewhere.1° Materials. The ultimate objectives of comminution should be to reduce material to some specified size while producing a minimum of undersize or fines, with less power, higher throughputs, and with more compact machinery. Attempts to achieve these objectives have been only partially successful, since gains in some areas are achieved at the cost of concessions in other areas. An example of some of these trade-offs can be found in the closed circuit crushing operations of the anthracite and crushed stone industry where, in order to produce a minimum of unprofitable fines, unfavorable concessions must be made in the size of the crushing facility where 2 or more crushing stages are interphased by 2 or more screening operations. This paper discusses experiments with a new process which attempts to achieve some, if not all, of the comminution objectives in a single pass operation without undesirable concessions; or, at the very least, to achieve more than is possible with systems in use today. These objectives are sought by use of water-flushing to enhance comminution. The crushing of coal and other minerals is a mature technology that is long overdue for a careful re-examination. Crushing of coal is generally achieved through the use of rotary breakers and roll crushers. Water-flushing, as envisioned here, appears to have potential application in the following areas: 1) For primary raw coal crushing or for secondary crushing of rotary breaker products. 2) For use as a size reduction and/or concentrating step for crushing coal mine refuse from present production or from existing refuse dumps. 3) For possible future application in underground preparation interphased with continuous mining machinery. Size reduction with conventional methods is known to be an inefficient operation when the increase in surface energy of the material crushed is compared with the input energy. A simple breakdown of the energy consumption in size reduction, given by Orr, is shown in [Fig. 1]. It is believed that most of the energy supplied is lost in the form of interparticle friction.2 Hence, the removal of fines immediately after their formation or the implementation of steps to prevent their formation, based on reduced friction, will reduce the energy requirements of the communition operation.3 A detailed discussion of the mechanism of size reduction is available in other literature.3-5 Even though the closed circuit crushing operation is designed to carry the fines away from the crushing zone, it is still inadequate for instantaneous removal of fines. The present investigation advocates the use of a flowing liquid medium to remove the crushed product immediately after size reduction. Unlike the wet-grinding methods, no constraints are required for the liquid flow rate, and, also, the liquid medium can be used in primary crushers like jaw crushers, hammer mills,

THE diffusion of metals plays an important role in many metallurgical processes, 1,2 as, for example, the formation of alloys by the annealing of mixed powders, the homogenization of segregated alloys, and the carburization of steel. Other equally important phenomena, such as recrystallization and creep, are based on the movement of like atoms. Although much is known concerning the effects of diffusion in metals, very little is known concerning the details of the physical processes involved.1,3-5 The data that should give most information concerning the processes involved in diffusion are those on the diffusion of like atoms-self-diffusion. Very little is known concerning the rates of self-diffusion of metals because before the discovery of artificial radio-activity in 1934 there was no means of detecting the movement of the diffusing atoms through the solvent metal except in the elements possessing natural radioactive isotopes-lead, thallium and bismuth. Using the induced radioactivity of the element as an indicator, atoms can now be "tagged" so that the rate of diffusion of the radioactive isotopes of an element (tagged atoms) into the stable isotopes of the same element can be measured. As the radioactive and stable isotopes of an element differ only in nuclear structure, it is quite certain that all isotopes of an element diffuse at the same rate. Two techniques have been used to measure self-diffusion. In one, a thin layer of radioactive metal is deposited on the face of the solvent metal, and the decrease in the surface activity as the radioactive atoms diffuse into the solvent metal is measured. This method has been used to determine the coefficients of self-diffusion of lead6-10 and bismuth10 using natural radioactive isotopes, and of gold11 and copper12 using artificial radioactive isotopes. In the other technique a thin layer of the radioactive metal is deposited on one face of the solvent metal, and after diffusion has occurred the specimen is cut in thin sections to obtain the concentration-penetration curve. This method has been used to determine the coefficients of self-diffusion of gold,13 zinc, 14-16 silver,17 and copper.18 The second method was used for the work described in this paper. MATERIALS The coefficients of self-diffusion were determined in two grades of polycrystalline copper and in single crystals of copper. Commercial OFHC copper was used in the form of disks I in. in diameter by 1/8 in. thick. Samples of high-purity copper described by Phillips and Skinner19 were supplied through the courtesy of the American Smelting and Refining Co. The high-purity copper rod was used without remelting by cross-rolling to a thickness of 0.075 in., from which disks 7/8 in. in diameter were cut. A good grade of bus-bar copper was used to make the single crystals.

This paper is a progress report on a study of the distribution of the banded ingredients (Figs. 1 and 2) in Illinois screenings and the method of determining their distribution. Proximate analyses and screen tests1 have been reported and a further report on the washability characteristics of the screenings is in preparation. The microscopic study of the screenings is not yet far enough advanced to permit a conclusive report on the effect of mining, screening and washing on the distribution of the banded ingredients in the coals of Illinois. However, considerable fundamental data have been collected as a background for the screenings investigation and for a proposed study of fuels composed of known quantities of vitrain, clarain and fusain, the three common banded ingredients of Illinois coals. These fundamental data and the preliminary information now available from the microscopic study of screenings are broadly indicative of the reaction of the coals to the physical processes affecting them in mining and preparation. Proximate analyses of samples of vitrain, clarain, and fusain from several Illinois mines have been published2, but those given in Table 1 serve to show the differences that are apparent in proximate analyses. The vitrain samples are consistently low in ash, and the unit-coal value is uniformly lower than in clarain. The average fuel ratio (F.C./V.M.) of the vitrain samples in the table is 1.57 whereas the clarain average is 1.42. The fusain analyses vary considerably in ash and moisture. In the two samples from this mine the moisture values range from 8.99 to 22.80 and the ash from 4.86 to 16.91 per cent. Fusain has higher fixed carbon than either vitrain or clarain but the percentage is erratic from sample to sample. The mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are situated in the Morenci-Metcalf copper district in southeastern Arizona. This copper-bearing district covers a triangular mountainous area of about 3 square miles, rising abruptly from the gravel plateau of the surrounding country. In this area, an immense intrusion of porphyry lias displaced, shattered, and engulfed the shales, limestones, and quartzites formerly bedded on the basal granite. Outcrops of oxide ore were discovered in 1873, and these surface ores were found to connect in depth with large bodies of high-grade oxide ores in the limestones and shales. The mining of these high-grade ores continued until about 1893, when their rapid exhaustion led to the discovery and exploitation of the low-grade sulphide ores in the adjoining porphyry. Methods of concentration were then devised and the low-grade ores finally rendered profitable. The Arizona Copper Co. and the Detroit Copper Mining Co., operating in the same district, were the pioneers in the successful development of the low-grade "porphyry" properties of to-day. The largest mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are the Humboldt and Clay at Morenci, and the Coronado, Metcalf, and King at Metcalf. These mines produce about 4,000 tons daily of concentrating ore containing from 2.5 to 2.8 per cent. copper. The topography of the country is very rugged and mining operations are conducted principally through adit levels. A few of the mines are opened by shafts, the deepest being 1,100 ft., in the Coronado mine. Ore Occurrence The low-grade sulphide ore occurs as: (1) disseminated deposits in the main stock of quartz porphyry; (2) lode deposits in fault fissures in granite. The high-grade oxide ores were found as tabular deposits in limestone and shale close to contacts with porphyry dikes. Low-grade oxide ore formed the outcrop of some of the sulphide orebodies; the majority of the outcrops, however, were barren.

The original Dorrance breaker of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. was erected in 1883. The coal beds were clean and dry, consequently a dry preparation system was used, consisting of revolving cylindrical screens for sizing and hand-picking, to remove the few impurities from the run of mine coal. The picking or cleaning room contained long parallel rows of chutes with seats mounted on them, for the use of the breaker boy, who bent over the chute and picked out the refuse material from the coal as it gravitated down the chute. The introduction of dry mechanical pickers, of, the sliding frictional type, in the early nineties lessened the number of boys, but hand-cleaning on the coal and refuse discharge ends of the mechanical picker was necessary. The Pardee spiral pickers, which were brought out about 1900, were better than the gravity pickers and gradually replaced them. In 1912 the breaker was entirely remodeled, although the original frame was retained. The revolving screens were replaced by shaking screens, and Pardee spirals were installed on all sizes of coal from egg to pea coal, inclusive. Hand-picking still was necessary on the coal and refuse ends of the spirals, although the changes did result in a reduction of the former breaker force. As mining advanced, and the thick clean bed became exhausted, it was necessary to mine veins containing a high percentage of impurities, which complicated the preparation problem. The most serious difficulty was the increase in the quantity of damp or wet run of mine, which could not be fully cleaned on the spirals. When this quantity exceeded approximately 5 per cent. of the feed, it was necessary to send the excess of the wet coal to the company's Prospect colliery for wet washing. This plan worked well for a time, but as the amount approached 15 per cent., with the prospect of a further increase, the company considered the building of a wet-washing plant. The Dorrance breaker was the only dry-cleaning plant operated by the company. At the seventeen other collieries, wet washing was employed, and jigs, both plunger and pan, were used. All the practical methods used in the anthracite fields were investigated, and it was finally decided to adopt the Rheolaveur system.
