THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic industries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. The nickel-chromium alloys form the base f for many industrial heating alloys, so that this system is of considerable practical importance. The literature on these alloys, however, contains much conflicting evi-dence, not only regarding the solubility limits of the terminal solid solu-tions at different temperatures but even regarding, the number of phases existing in the system. Part of the difficulty undoubtedly arises from the fact that chromium of sufficiently high purity has been available only during the last few years. A second and possibly even more impor-tant difficulty arises from the ease with which chromium reacts with silicon and carbon compounds and the atmosphere to form silicides, carbides, nitrides and oxides. Pilling and kihlgren1 in 1929 reviewed the existing scanty information. They did not consider the diagram by which they summarized the various bits of information to be entirely satisfactory. Matsunaga2 investigated the system by thermal analysis, microscopic examination and other means. Electrolytic nickel of 99.9 per cent purity and thermit chromium containing 0.30 per cent al, 0.40 per cent fe, 0.25 per cent si and 0.04 per cent c were used. Longwall Technology has a potential of resulting in safety and productivity improvements of U.S. underground coal mining similar to those experienced by the introduction of continuous miner systems. The study presents a comprehensive national evaluation of longwall technology to assess the potential of longwalls to improve health and safety and coal productivity. The study was conducted by the authors during the spring of 1980 as part of MSHA New Technology Coordination activities and with a view to examine the factors that may limit the acceptance of longwall technology in the U.S. coal mining operations. The study points out areas where adjustments need to be made in MSHA regulations and enforcement to help Longwalls. A two-entry longwall system appears to offer a practical method of improving underground coal productivity and safety. Applying regulations that are primarily designed for room and pillar methods to longwall mining, in some instances, reduces the effectiveness and productivity benefits feasible by new technology application. Controlling dust is the single predominant problem in the design and operation of longwalls in the United States. The results of this study points out a need for a coordinated program between government and industries on dust control technologies for examining acceptable technological options to control dust in longwalls without restraining the production capability of the system.

It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in common rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modeled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

Quantification in recording geologic phenomena and application of well-known geologic principles to engineering works continued at an increasing rate during the year. Highway departments, water resources agencies, private firms and governmental agencies involved in tunnel excavations, dam site locations and construction, consultants and government experts in subsurface liquid-waste disposal, designers of underground storage facilities and city and regional planners all confirmed greater use of applied geology in their planning and implementation of plans. Applications of quantified geologic data to highway locations, slope control of cuts, raw material sources, water sources and water run- off showed a striking increase in number. Environmental geology and geologic hazards became part of the jargon of the geologic profession, and the American public began to realize more fully the significance of where they live, and on what and near what geologic phenomena which might effect their well-being. Tunnel work for water projects of almost dream-like magnitude kept geologic engineers busily engaged in predicting and testing local geologic conditions for construction projects. Disposal of industrial and radioactive liquid wastes continued as problems, but use of stratigraphic data, fluid flow rates and direction of flow helped solve some critical waste disposal problems. Unusual applications of seismic networks, remote sensing methods and X-ray techniques in geological engineering applications added other tools to this increasingly important profession.

INTRODUCTION The Northern Great Plains has 16 billion tons of strippable lignite (1). Presently, 15 million tons per year are mined; essentially all is used for generation of electrical power. In the future, additional large quantities will be consumed in the production of gaseous and liquid fuels. A major consideration in design and operability of power stations and conversion plants is the nature of the ash or inorganic constituents of the lignite used. These inorganic components cause fireside fouling in boilers, exert a catalytic effect in liquefaction and gasification, and contribute to particulate and SO2 emissions. Ash fouling on fireside boiler tubes cause reduced heat transfer and gas flow which limits boiler performance. Severe fouling can result in shutdown of the boiler. A comprehensive test program in both pilot plant and field studies at the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center (GFETC) has shown that ash fouling increases with increased sodium content of low-rank coals (2). GOODALE,* Butte, Mont.-I notice Mr. Newton refers very briefly to the carbonate ores of manganese, rhodochrosite, but he does not go into any special description of the treatment of that material. In some of the veins in Butte, Mont., there is a large amount of rhodo-chrosite, and a large tonnage of that material has been shipped to the East for making ferromanganese. At the works of the Anaconda company at Great Falls they treated several thousand tons of this manganese ore, running about 37 to 38 per cent. manganese, in electric furnaces, giving a product of about 78 per cent. of manganese. But just at that time the demand for ferromanganese from the West was discontinued and the material, about 1000 tons of 78 per cent. manganese, is on hand at the works at Great Falls. With the higher-grade manganese ore, running, we will say, 37 or 38 per cent., there are large bodies of ore perhaps 20 or 25 per cent., but containing too much silica to be valuable in their present condition. Some efforts have been made for water concentration of that material, but owing to. there being only a difference of about 1 in the specific gravity of the quartz gangue and the manganese mineral, water concentration has offered some difficulties, I have been told, however, that some very satisfactory experiments have been made with magnetic concentration of this material. I think it is a new idea that this manganese ore can be treated successfully by magnetic concentration.

Feldspar has been separated from silica by cationic collector using hydrofluoric acid as an activator of feldspar (1,2). Recently, one of the authors developed a new flotation process separating feldspar from quartz without using hydrofluoric acid. Presently, some silica sand mills are operating to introduce this process in Japan (3). In this flotation, feldspar is floated from silica using normal alkyltri-methylene diamine acetate together with sodium petroleum sulfonate as collectors in a hydrochloric or sulfuric acid circuit of about pH 2. From fundamental studies, it was found that, though the aliphatic diamine by itself did not adsorb on feldspar sufficiently to give a satisfying flotation in acidic circuit., the adsorption of collector was promoted by the simultaneous use of petroleum sulfonate and resulted in sufficient flotation of feldspar. On the other hand, quartz did not float in this flotation process. The application of this flotation was attempted for some types of natural samples and satisfying results were obtained. Further, an example of practical plant was introduced and the advantages in the process are emphasized.

The influence of reduction roasting and thermal shock on the grindability of a refractory low-grade Michigan iron ore was examined in bench-scale tests. The quantitative effects of the various treatments were evaluated at three sieve levels, 48, 100, and 400 mesh, with ball-mill-grindability and work-index parameters as response indicators. Data from the testing program were statistically analyzed to isolate the effects of cooling rate, roasting temperature, mesh level, and ore chemical condition. All four variables were found to have an important influence on the grindability of the treated ore. Ore chemical condition and roasting temperature had the most pronounced effects.

Rotary percussive drilling, vibro-drilling, vibro-rotation drilling, rotary pulsating drilling-all names that mean the same thing-are gradually appearing in mining literature. What is rotary percussive drilling? It is a combined system superimposing a rapid percussive impact on a continuous rotary action in an attempt to utilize the most desirable features of both methods. At present single and multiple carriage-mounted rotary percussion units are being used in the European coal mining regions. One well engineered unit is the Hausherr "Albo" rotary percussive drill, utilizing two alternately operating percussion pistons, and another is the multiple-unit, jumbo-mounted Salzgitter machine. Niisse & Grafer also manufacture rotary percussion drills.

(written discussion?).-To many members of the Institute, papers like this one by Prof. Jeffries, and that on "Reversal of Inheritance" by Prof. Howe, may seem highly academic. Aside from their direct application to all heat-treating processes, to my mind, the establishment of a physical fact and the correlation of facts into a definite law are in themselves ample justification for immense effort. A law, once established, cannot be ignored by those who carry the work along to practical ends. In studying both papers, it seems to me that each author is more concerned with defending a theory than with explaining the individual results as published by various investigators. Take, for example, my sample of pressed electrolytic iron, frequently referred to by both. Prof. Howe, defending inheritance, says that the grains on the second (1300° C.) heating inherited their size from the mother austenite. Prof. Jeffries, defending reversed inheritance, elabor-.

The news pages of MINING ENGINEERING and other trade publications have for the past two years carried a great many items about new developments in phosphate and potash, reflecting the surge in world consumption of these products as fertilizer. Today the question often arises concerning how much growth can be further anticipated by the phosphate and potash industries. To answer this question, a 15-year projection of world fertilizer consumption in terms of the three basic plant food nutrients-nitrogen, phosphate and potash-has been prepared. Two of these, phosphate and potash, are basic products of the mining industry. Nitrogen, once an important product of mining, is now mainly a chemical product. Another mineral, sulfur, although not a primary nutrient, depends on the fertilizer manufacturing industry for the bulk of its market. In crop year 1962-63, there began a startling in- crease in world fertilizer consumption. In that year, consumption increased by about 10% and in the following year by 10-12%.

In 1970, the federal Clean Air Act was passed, promulgating limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The brunt of this regulation was felt by the electric utility industry, especially those units generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), which is composed of three major segments: the electric utility, the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo's experience suggested the equipment end of the business, but market analysis recommended investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO2 gas. This resulted in the formation of Dravo Lime Co. to manufacture and market reagents to the FGD industry. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review Dravo's innovative mine and calcining facility.

Discussion of the paper of WALTER 0. SNELLING, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 695 to 704. A. F. LUCAS, Washington, D. C.-Are the results of the experiments in practical operation? WALTER 0. SNELLING.-There have been no large-scale operations up to the present. The necessary conditions of temperature are easily arranged for, but the required condition of pressure, 800 lb., is not so simple a matter. The company has been working on this problem, and at the refinery in Oklahoma work of this kind is now being carried on. The way in which an ordinary still will leak at 50 lb., and more at 100 lb., leaves some doubt in the mind of many as to what can be clone at a continuous working pressure of 800 lb. On the other hand, the fact that they are making ammonia abroad by a method which employs higher pressures and temperatures than anything involved in this method, leads me to believe that the difficulties, which will undoubtedly arise when this is attempted on a commercial scale, can be overcome. [The following notes of observations made during a visit of a few days in the month of October, 1886, which was cut short by a sudden summons East, are offered, in spite of their incomplete and tentative character, in the hope that they may aid the members of the Institute, in their coming visit to this region, to a clearer understanding of the general geological conditions under which the ore-bodies occur.] The Butte mining region lies in a sort of a depression in the mountains which is drained by Silver Bow creek and its various tributaries. On the east it is bounded by high north and south ridges of granite, and on the west by lower ridges, also running north and south, which, as far as examined, were found to consist of rhyolite. High mountains also inclose the depression on the north and south, but at a greater distance than the more immediate bounding ridges on the east and west, the distance between which is hardly more than six miles.

Experiments were conducted on magnesium monocrystals in order to collect quantitative information on the mechanisms which limit the rate of basal slip. Using critical shear stress and creep data, activation energies for creep at low aid at high temperatures were derived. The activation energy at low temperatures is the same as that for jog formation and the activation energy at high temperatures agrees with that for climb. COTTRELL has suggested that at low temperatures, the expansion of dislocation loops under stresses near the yield strength is limited by the rate at____ which the expanding loops can cut the "forest" of dislocations passing through the glide planes.' On the basis of this mechanism, seeger2 has derived expressions for low-temperature creep and for the relation of flow stress of single crystals to temperature. In the work reported here, the authors have performed experiments designed to obtain quantitative data on the physical properties of the dislocation intersection mechanisms operating during basal slip in pure magnesium monocrystals. Rare earth element (REE) analyses of cumulus plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma cannot be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data are more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE-bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a reappearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultra- mafic zone of the complex.

The discovery of rhenium on the ion exchange resin used at the uraniun in-situ leach operations at Palangana, TX, led to a laborabory study of possible recovery methods. Rhenium was present in small amounts in the ammonium carbonate leach liquors as the perrhenate anion, ReO4-. It concentrated on the anion exchange resin, which was a factor of 10 more selective for rhenium than for uranium. Various elution systems were investigated for stripping the rhenium from the columns after the uranium had been eluted with chloride or nitrate solutions. Although the per-chlorate ion was most efficient on a molar basis, nitrate ion combined the benefits of efficiency and low cost. A 3N or stronger concentration of nitrate containing up to 0. 5N H + was found to be the system of choice. A rhenium sulfide concentrate containing up to 14010 Re was obtained from these effluents by hydrogen sulfide precipitation. Preliminary experiments were run to produce rhenium metal powder by oxidation of the concentrate to NH4ReO4 followed by hydrogen reduction at elevated temperature.
