Japan's contact with the mining industry of British Columbia began as far back as 1952 with the first shipment of iron ore from the Texada mine. Five years later, the Big Three steel mills of Japan-that is, Nihon Kokan Kaisha, together with Yawata and Fuji Steel Mills-dispatched a coal survey mission to inspect coal mines in British Columbia. This resulted in 100,000 tons of coking coal being initially imported by Japan from western Canada in 1959. Also in 1959, Yawata, Fuji, NKK, Kawasaki and Sumitomo sent an iron ore survey group to Alaska and Canada. During the preceding year, Nippon Mining Company and Sumitomo Metal Mining Company initiated a project whereby they would assist in the development of Cowichan Copper on Vancouver Island. As a net result of this activity Japanese mining groups, who had heretofore concentrated on Southeast Asia and South America, finally turned their eyes toward Canada. It was in the fall of 1960 that the government of Japan, in order to keep pace with Japan's rapid economic development, announced a long-range economic plan whereby her gross national income would be doubled by 1970. This had the effect of further propelling Japan's desire to develop sources of raw material supplies abroad. With the development of Craigmont Mines and the signing of a long-term contract to export copper concentrates to Japan, and with the Sumitomo group's extending financial assistance to develop Bethlehem Copper, Canada itself began to realize that Japan was indeed a very important market for British Columbia. A number of surveys to develop mines in British Columbia was begun with an eye on Japan as the major market, and the activity has continued to this day.

THE word temperature has both a colloquial and a technical use. For everyday purposes of abusing the weather man, no very exact definition is necessary, but for the purpose of giving a simple summary of the physical laws that form the basis of practical pyrometry, something more precise is required. Beginning, therefore, with the common concept of "hotness" and "coldness," we must agree on a method of measuring differences in "hotness," on the unit to be used, and on the point from which measurements are to be taken. We shall then have a definite "scale of temperature," which can be used in all methods of pyrometry. But, as in many similar cases, it is much easier to define or describe something than it is to make practical application and use of the definition; so that much of our attention will be taken up with practical methods of realizing or applying the scale agreed upon. It was early observed that changes in temperature produced large and easily measurable changes in gases, which may be most simply separated into changes in volume (expansion and contraction) under conditions of constant pressure, and changes in pressure under conditions of constant volume. These changes are much the same in magnitude for the common gases oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen and also for the rarer helium and argon. This relative uniformity in behavior led to the suggestion of "the gas thermometer" and "the gas scale" as the basis for all temperature measurements. However, as methods were refined, differences appeared between different gases and different ways of using gases, so that Lord Kelvin introduced his more fundamental notion of the "absolute thermodynamic scale" of temperature, which he defined as follows: Given two bodies, say two tanks of water, at different temperatures to determine these temperatures on the "absolute thermodynamic," or Kelvin, scale, operate a thermal engine between these two temperatures, letting it take in heat from the hot body and give out heat to the cold, which therefore corresponds to the boiler and the condenser of a steam engine. RECENTLY there has been a considerable revival of interest in the effects of the various elements commonly added to brass for the purpose of increasing its strength. For many years the work of Guillet2? alone gave reliable information in this regard. Even today his determination's of the coefficients of equivalence of the various elements relative to zinc in brass are those universally employed in industry. This is so because these coefficients have stood the test of time-their substantial correctness has been proved in almost universal practice. It is not our intention to discuss here these coefficients or their use. Rather do we wish to emphasize the need for further systematic studies of the mechanical properties of the ternary systems of copper, zinc, and other individual elements. Since Guillet published the results of his first investigations Millington,16 Smalley33 and Thibaud45 have added somewhat to our information. In general they have confirmed the findings of Guillet, which may be stated in the following rather general terms: 1. The addition of aluminum to the 70:30 and 60:40 brasses progressively increases their hardness and strength and reduces their ductility and resistance to shock. 2. The addition of small amounts of iron to a 60:40 brass improves its strength without affecting its ductility. 3. The addition of small amounts of manganese to a 60:40 brass causes a progressive increase in its strength and reduction in its ductility. A considerable amount of information has been amassed in regard to the effect of nickel on brass (9, 22, 41) which it is unnecessary to refer to here, in view of the scope of this paper.

There is much comment at present in the ranks of the oil industry regarding unit operation of oil fields and the benefit that would accrue if it could be extensively applied. It seems certain that, as an immediate corrective of the present situation, overproduction could be effectively curtailed with all the advantages of proper conservation of petroleum resources and with no important loss to anyone connected with the industry. Unit Operation in Certain Foreign Fields Many an oil operator in America would doubtless like to have exclusive control of one or more oil-bearing structures for development in accordance with the economic position of the industry and especially in accordance with the best production practice known. A few operators now have this privilege, particularly in certain foreign fields, and are following lines of procedure which show that they are aware of the great opportunity that is theirs. We find in an article by Professor Strigeoff,1 and in a paper read by Captain Comins2 before the American Petroleum Institute, the outlines of procedure adopted, respectively, by the Soviet Government for the nationalized Russian oil fields and by the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. for its fields in Persia. Comprehensive plans for the unit operation of other oil fields may have been described publicly but no such descriptions have come to the attention of the writer. New fields are coming more and more into the hands of single operators or of a few who control large activities and who appreciate fully the need for cooperative action and are willing to forego the lure of a large quick profit from high flush production in order to secure the advantage of better stabilization in the industry and a larger though more deferred profit by operating the field as a unit. Much can be done toward efficient development of an oil field controlled by a few operators who are willing to cooperate for that purpose, but the best result can be obtained only by pooling their interests in the field

The constitution and mechanical properties of heat-treated alloys containing up to 10 pct* Ni in Ti have been investigated. The effects of quenching and of various isothermal treatments ale described, and C-curves are presented. The production of the precipitated and the martensitic hexagonal phases on quenching is discussed. MARGOLIN, Ence, and Nielsenl have determined the titanium-nickel phase diagram. A study of the transformations in gas-quenched and tempered powder specimens was made by Polonis and Parr.' Some isothermal transformation work was carried out by Margolin and ~unshah, who determined transformation curves for 4 and 6 wt pct alloys, while Robinson et al.investigated the formation of the w phase in a quenched and tempered alloy, Margolin and Bunshah showed that while a martensitic transformation could be obtained on quench- ing thin sections of a 4 wt pct alloy, a 6 wt pct alloy precipitated a nonmartensitic phase. The present investigation was undertaken to obtain more information on the transformations in quenched, quenched and tempered, and isothermally transformed lump specimens of alloys containing up to 10 pct Ni. Isothermal transformation curves have been determined for 7 and 10 pct alloys and cooling curves have been obtained for quenched alloys containing up to 7 pct Ni. The mechanical properties of 2, 5, and 10 pct alloys were studied, with the object of relating properties to microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Alloys containing up to 10 pct Ni were prepared from sponge titanium and spectrographic standard nickel by levitation-melting and chill-casting in a split copper mold. THE mine blacksmith and drill-steel sharpening shop at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. is on the surface, adjoining the main shaft. It is a brick building, 51 by 30 ft. inside dimensions, with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. About two-thirds of the steels used are brought up through the main shaft; the remainder through two auxiliary shafts. The latter are carried to the shop by team or truck. At each shaft sufficiently large stocks of sharp drills of various types are kept to replace all the dull steels that may be sent up; while at the shop enough sharp drills are kept to replace the dull steels in the stocks kept at the auxiliary shafts. Though this entails keeping a larger number of drill steels in service than might be required by other methods, there is less hurry in the sharpening shop and the steels have a longer period of rest. If a rest from use enables steel to recover from fatigue strains, this method secures that rest. The forms shown in Fig. 1 are supplied to each shift boss in books of 100. These are used to requisition sharp drills from the shaft stocks and enable the men at the tops of the shafts to sort out the required sizes and to have them ready to be sent to the various shaft stations. AS the margin of profit in the manufacture of iron continues to decrease, attention is called more and more to economies in every department. Beginning at the bottom, in the preparation of the ore at the mine, me notice a general tendency is towards the shipment of richer ores, securing to the mine-owner a better price per ton, which the purchaser is glad to pay by reason of the saving in freight of iron, and in the cost of reduction, which depends so largely upon the amount of fuel and flux, and the productive capacity of the plant. In other words, the difference in value between rich and poor ores is much greater than their relative percentages of iron indicates; because the barren material in a lean ore is not merely worthless, it is a positive source of expense, requiring transportation, handling, fluxing, smelting, and its due share of general expenses; in return for which it yields nothing and decreases the available capacity of a given plant and capital for profitable work. The enriching of the ore is done in most places by hand-picking, and in a few by wet concentration; but the managers of several magnetite mines in Sweden have been practically successful in doing it by machinery. The only magnetic separating machine which has actually taken the place of hand-picking was designed and patented by Mr. Jonas Wenström of Örebrö, Sweden. In this machine, which is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, Mr. Wenström has taken advantage of the property of soft iron to become magnetized by induction. The machine consists of a barrel made up of soft iron bars and some non-conducting material (usually wood), which is rotated around a stationary shaft by means of a cog-wheel. Inside of this barrel, on the shaft, is placed eccentrically a cylindrical electro-magnet, provided with a number of manges (N, S, Fig. I), between which wire is wound in such a manner that the flanges are of negative and positive polarity, being energized by a current passing through the wire coils from a small dynamo. As will be seen in Fig. 1, the flanges, N, S, are circular, and follow the internal contour of the barrel on the front side, while on the opposite side they are cut down to the line B, B' in Fig. 2. Munroe, New York City : In his reference to cop per-dressing at Lake Superior, p. 325, Mr. Douglas says that " the .. concentration .. . has been carried out with greatest financial economy,... I do not say with the greatest economy of min eral." And again, on p. 344, referring to the same, " it would not pay to reduce the quantity treated, and increase hand-labor, in order to save a few hundredths of one per cent. of copper." Mr. Douglas probably has in mind the fact that the copper lost is all included copper, locked op in grains of sand. To save this, the rock must be crushed finer. If the mesh of the stamp-screens be reduced, the stamps will crush less; and thus we shall have to reduce the quantity treated in the mill per day, while the labor re mains the same per day, or is increased per ton, as he says. Submitting to the loss of copper, however, is not the only solution of the difficulty. A large quantity of rich sand is now collected by the jigs, and it would be easy to save so much of this material that the escaping sands would be quite poor. What is wanted at Lake Superior, and at many dressing-works in this country, is an efficient crushing-machine to treat the sands thus collected. Abroad, we have the Heberle machine and the Schranz mill for this purpose, the latter being the more successful. The Heberle grinder was tried at the Calumet and Hecla mill for crush ing these rich sands, with what success I do not know. Although age-hardening in an aluminum-base alloy containing magnesium was observed by Alfred Wilml as early as 1911, it was not until 1919 that a theory of the mechanism of age-hardening was proposed. Merica, Waltenberg and Scott12 studying the age-hardening characteristics of Duralumin at the National Bureau of Standards, came to the conclusion that age-hardening of this alloy is caused by the precipitation of CuAl2, which is less soluble at the aging temperature than at the solution heat-treating temperature. It was postulated that the initially precipitated particles were of fine colloidal dimensions but that they gradually grew in size. Maximum hardness was assumed to be attained when the particles reached a critical size. This theory was at first received skeptically, since it was a widely accepted view at that time that the solid solution state should represent the hardest state of an alloy. Shortly thereafter, Jeffries and Archer proposed their well-known slip interference theory.'13 They suggested that age-hardening was accomplished by the precipitated particles acting as keys interfering with slip along crystallographic glide planes. They showed that this mechanical theory led direct,ly to the assumption that maximum hardening would be produced by particles of a critical size, which they suggested would have a diameter approximately 10 times that of the aluminum atom. This contribution amplified and explained so rationally the age-hardening theory of Merica, Waltenberg and Scott that wide acceptance resulted. Objections to Simple Precipitation Theory From time to time certain experimental facts have been cited against the simple precipitation theory. The first of these was the discovery by Fraenkel4 that, although the electrical resistivity of Duralumin decreased during aging at higher temperatures (from 100' to 250' C.), it increased during aging at ordinary temperatures. Six or seven years age the United States Bureau of Nines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. V For this work a new type of seismometer has been developod.1/ A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been. published 2/ and others arcs the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity Prose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by quarry blasts were made, but without Piny attempt et direct correlation or interpretation. During; 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the walls and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mine's was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper duels with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes soma comparisons with affects from quarry shots. The results are in the: nature, of , progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. Those, tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south off the southerly curb of Park Road, in. Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road. Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

THERE is a considerable tonnage of iron ore in the Menominee Range of Michigan that is unsalable only because it has too large a content of sulphur. Beneficiation of such ore is economically desirable, as a relatively large quantity of finished concentrate would be obtained (deleterious sulphur mineral content being generally less than 5 per cent) and because large blocks of such ore have been developed incidentally during search for low-sulphur ore. Research on the flotation beiieficiation of these high-sulphur ores consisted of: (1) a study of the flotative properties of the principal minerals in a nearly pure state, (2) flotation of synthetic mixtures of these pure minerals and (3) application of this experimental information to samples of the ores. Gypsum in iron ores is extremely deleterious; but when sufficiently free from impurities it is a valuable commodity. In 1934, the United States produced 1,500,000 tons of calcined and uncalcined gypsum valued at $13,700,0001. Of this quantity and value, Michigan produced approximately 19 per cent4. Thus this investigation may also prove to be of interest in connection with the gypsum industry if minerals separation, such as flotation, becomes necessary in the future processing of gypsum. Data on the flotative properties of gypsum would also be of interest to the science of flotation because such information has been extremely limited. The technical literature reveals one reference to the flotation of gypsum, in which was discussed the use of the mineral, with several others, to determine the relation between the floatability of minerals and the pH of the flotation solution2. This investigation necessarily was not comprehensive in regard to gypsum, but it did show that the mineral could be floated with oleic acid under varying pH conditions.

THE flotative properties of the principal minerals in Michigan's potential iron ores have been investigated to develop methods of beneficiation for the ores. One of these minerals, magnetite, is of considerable importance as a source of iron. Study of its flotation was similar to that of hematite1, another iron mineral in these potential ores. The present research consisted essentially of: (1) a survey of the literature on magnetite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure magnetite, (3) the development of laboratory procedure and (4) flotation experimentation. Literature on Magnetite Flotation.-For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotation of magnetite can be summarized as follows. The mineral has been floated with pine oil2, and it has also been separated from synthetic mixtures with silicates by the use of the same reagent2. Magnetite and apatite in iron-ore slimes have been separated by flotation of apatite with sodium palmitate3. These data were utilized in the present investigation. Preparation of Magnetite.-The pure mineral was prepared from the magnetic-separator concentrate of an iron ore (obtained from the Witherbee- Sherman Corporation, Port Henry, N. Y.). This concentrate was slowly comminuted with laboratory rolls and pulverizer to pass 65-mesh and was then tabled several times. Tabling yielded a relatively coarse magnetite concentrate, tailing and slimes. The two latter materials were rejected insofar as the present work is concerned, and treatment of the magnetite (table concentrate) was continued by separating it into -65 + 200 and -200-mesh sizes. Separation of the sizes was made by first dry screening and then wet screening. The -200-mesh material was rejected to eliminate possible introduction of error into flotation This paper describes a part of a general investigation into the flotation of Michigan's potential iron ores. A comprehensive discussion of the status of these ores and of the reasons for research on their Rotation beneficiation is available in mimeographed form on application to the Michigan allege of Mining and Technology, Houghton, Michigan. The Yates field is situated in northeastern Pecos County, Texas. Its productive area is about 15,000 acres. Production is chiefly from limestone of Permian age. Depths of wells vary from 1100 to 1800 ft. Initial productions range from a few barrels to 8000 bbl. per hour. The field outlet has always been prorated. Gas-oil ratios originally varied from less than 100 cu. ft. up to 8000 cu. ft. per barrel at allowable production rates. The average ratio was about 500 cu. ft. Fig. 1 shows the structure of the field and the location of the Tippett lease, on which the original experimental tubing work was done. Before the latter part of the year 1929, little actual effort in practice had been given to determination of the conditions under which the highest efficiencies may be realized in naturally flowing wells. For the preceding few years attention had been given to gas-oil ratios and their possible reduction by maintenance of back-pressure by choking at the well head. Some attempts had been made toward reduction of ratio by bottom-hole choking. In late 1929, the Shell Petroleum Corp. started the experimental installation of specially designed flow columns adapted to high-pressure flowing conditions in the Yates field. The objectives in view were the attainment of low gas-oil ratios at low rates of flow and the maintenance of high bottom-hole pressures. All naturally flowing wells should be provided with a suitable eductor string immediately upon completion of the well, so that the benefits of efficient flow will be derived from the beginning. This paper presents a method of tubing for efficient flow and a discussion of some complex factors which influence well behavior. Factors Influencing Gas-oil Ratios Many factors influence the production of gas from naturally flowing wells. The writers believe that in some instances gas control is effected mainly in the reservoir itself, in others in the well bore, and in still others both sets of factors may be significant. Many of the parts of motor cars, aircraft, etc., that require strong light construction, hence must be made of high-quality steel, are stressed to the maximum limit only in a very small volume. In parts subject to bending stress a line or even a point may take the maximum stress. A series of endurance tests under repeated bending in progress in the U. S. Bureau of Mines laboratories, like similar tests by other investigators, has shown the great difference in life of sister bars of the same stecl, handled in the same way and tested at the same nominal stress. It is known that a surface notch or scratch greatly increases the local stress over the nominal calculated stress; internal notches, such as those formed by inclusions or sonims, probably have a similar effect. From the tetss made by the Bureau of Mines, the cleanliness of the steel at the dangerous section, or point of maximum stress, seems to be one of the most important factors in determining the life of the piece. The more localized the stress, the more does chance, rather than the average properties, dctermine the life of the steel. The usual test, a tension test of a bar taken longitudinally, is not sensitive to the local drop in strength (or tendency to increase the true local stress over the nominal) because of inclusions, which probably have a more injurious effect in hard heat-treated steels, such as must be used when great strength is sought, than in softer steels. Users of steel who make transverse tests find surprisingly low ductility on transverse bars of dirty steel, though the longitudinal tests may be good. With the threatened falling off in production of the lighter oil pools of the Tampico embayment in Mexico, a general search of that country for oil-producing regions has resulted in renewed activity in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the first districts exploited in Mexico. Since the drilling of the first well in the San Cristobal section by the Pearson interests in 1902, drilling has been continuous, except during 1917-1921, when practically all development was stopped by the revolutionary activity. Early in 1921, a drilling campaign was inaugurated for the purpose of testing out the known salt-dome poolfi on the flanks of the salt masses, rather than on their tops where previous tests had been located. On Dec. 7, 1921, the Aguila Co., with which are consolidated the Pearson interests and which has been the only company active in developing this region, unexpectedly drilled into a sand horizon at 3015 ft. with its Conception well No. 18. The hole was unable to handle the production, as a 1400-ft. string of 121/2-in. casing was hanging in the hole, a salt-water horizon drilled through at about 800 ft., was not cemented off, and 3000 ft. of 4-in. drill stem with rotary bit was in the hole. This well's potential capacity was never determined, but it made 7000 bbl. of 25" Bé. oil through the bit and Pin. drill stem, in one of its sporadic flows before sanding up, and thus proved itself capable of the largest potential production of any well on the Isthmus. The well showed salt water before caving and sanding up with the drill stem still in the hole, and will probably never be used for production. Wells Nos. 22 and 23, drilled nearby, have proved disappointments after making good showings of oil. In the spring of 1922, Ixhuatlan wells Nos. 28 and 29, deep tests supposedly on the flank of the known salt cores in that field, went into solid salt; No. 28 at 2250 ft. and No. 29 at 2400 ft. No. 28 was continued in the salt for 1000 ft. before operations were stopped. Later comple-

Five-sixths of all the coal that is mined in the United States is burned, without previous treatment other than screening, for the production of heat and power, so that its value is fixed by its suitability for this purpose. Nevertheless, the characteristics of individual coals that determine their fitness for use in particular pieces of combustion equipment are not yet well known. This condition is due not only to the small extent of our knowledge concerning coal itself, but also to our comparative ignorance of the nature of the combustion process. The following paper is an analysis of the combustion process as it occurs in industrial furnaces, based largely on the results of laboratory research on combustion rates. From this analysis it is possible to determine the characteristics of the fuel that limit the capacity of a given piece of combustion equipment. Limitations imposed by other factors than the attainable speed of combustion will not be considered, since they are subject to a different type of analysis involving the balancing of maintenance costs against fixed charges. In order to observe the relations among the various factors that affect the speed of combustion, representative particles of fuel will be followed through two types of furnaces. A pulverized-coal furnace will be considered first, because the independence of the individual particles facilitates the analysis of the effect of furnace conditions. The second example will be a grate-fired furnace in which ignition of the fuel takes place on the underfeed principle. This includes both underfeed and chain grate stokers, (8)† but does not include hand-fired furnaces and some overfeed stokers. The furnace will be considered to be large enough, the temperature high enough, and enough air provided, to burn the fuel completely, without, for the moment, specifying these quantities more completely. The presence of gas in coal mines necessitates the use of costly ventilation arrangements and the use of expensive mining methods. On the other hand, the gas itself in many instances is of considerable intrinsic value, and its separate recovery might conceivably be a profitable undertaking. This paper is concerned with a study of the movement of gas in coal strata with the object of determining the laws governing gas movement and thus making at least a preliminary step toward the solution of the more practical problem of its control or recovery. Naturally, so important a subject has received much attention from scientists and engineers. In most cases, however, the studies have been concerned with the origin1$, the amount" the composition3 and the method of retention4 of the gas in coal; or, from the more practical side, have been concerned with the phenonlena and conditions associated with outbursts5 or explosions and their control. Numerous studies also have been made of the permeability of coal to gas" of gas pressures measured in coal seams, etc. The authors are unaware, however, of any attempt to present a consistent or complete picture of the laws governing the movement of gas through the coal. Study in West Virginia A recent study conducted at this University7 gives the first presentation of the distribution of pressures in a small section of a coal seam. Holes were drilled into the coal rib to various depths and at various distances from the coal face. The location selected for study was as remote as possible from disturbing influences of mining operations, faults, "wants," etc. The pipes extending into the coal that were used to determine pressures were grouted into the borehole for the entire depth of the hole, and great precaution was taken to insure accurate pressure readings. Different forms of optical pyrometers are discussed and the advantages and disadvantages of the different types for measuring high temperatures are pointed out. These advantages and disadvantages lead to the selection of the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer for most work. Attention is directed to the necessity for the use of a monochromatic screen with a pyrometer, which leads to a discussion of the meaning and use of the effective wave length of the screen. Methods of calibrating the optical pyrometer are outlined and it is shown that an optical pyrometer can be calibrated just as definitely as any other temperature-measuring device. Accuracy tests are included, in which it is shown that excellent results can be obtained by even untrained or slightly trained observers with this form of optical pyrometer. The various corrections that are necessary in this kind of work are indicated, including corrections for stray light, for absorption of windows, of smoke, and so forth. The troublesome problem of measuring the temperature of bodies that do not radiate like a black body is discussed and the corrections for reducing such readings to the true temperature are given for a number of different materials. Introduction The fundamental idea of temperature depends upon our temperature sense and bodies are said to be hot or cold depending upon the reaction of our hands or some other part of the body to the heat from the source investigated. For measuring the temperature some instrument must be devised, since the temperature of the source studied is apt to be so hot as to greatly injure any part of the body that comes near it, to say nothing about direct contact with it. In applied mechanics and in metallurgy the transition from elastic to inelastic action is a matter of considerable interest and importance. Often the first inelastic deformation is apparently quite homogeneous; that is, uniformly distributed throughout the specimen. Sometimes this deformation is heterogeneous; that is, localized; inelastic deformation proceeds to some definite amount in restricted regions before adjacent regions of the specimen are inelastically deformed. In such cases the deformation does not become homogeneous until the whole specimen has been deformed the amount corresponding to that for each localized deformation. If the test is stopped before uniform extension sets in, the heterogeneous character of the deformation is apparent on the surface of the specimen through characteristic markings, which have been called "LÜders'" lines, "Hartmann's" lines, the "Piobert effect," or simply "flow figures." These markings are the source of considerable trouble in fabricating operations, particularly in the deep drawing of steel sheet. In many cases where the transition is of this nature, the stress developed at the upper limit of the elastic range is greater than the stress during the period of heterogeneous deformation, giving rise to the familiar "drop of the beam" effect in testing. The amount of the yield-point elongation, as well as the value of the stress at the lower yield point (the value to which the stress drops when yielding begins), are functions of the temperature and the testing speed. Lower temperatures and faster rates of testing increase both the yield-point elongation and the yield-point stress. These matters have been ably discussed in a recent paper by Winlock and Leiterl though, as brought out by the discussion of that paper, the phenomena are but little understood. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify the problem through the application of a simple principle, and to show that, through the application of this principle, a number of phenomena in the plastic deformation of metals become more readily understood. The Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140" 06' N., Long. 86" 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Tegucigalpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle Y. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 Ib. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo servicc. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced. The nearest site for an airport was two miles north of the mine. The necessary grading was done by a small track-type tractor with a wheeled grader, which was brought in overland.
