Much has been said and written about uneconomic and evil marketing practices in the oil industry, including such factors as loaning of equipment, price cutting and secret prices, commercial discounts, abuses of credit cards and coupon books, and so forth. It is not my purpose here to add to the discussion of those problems, but rather to attempt a discussion of some of the more basic factors in the general distribution economies of the industry. The economics of distribution in the oil industry cannot be regarded apart from the general economics of the industry as a whole. The attempt to regard them as separate has led many people into the fallacy of believing that the responsibility for the apparent evils in the marketing end of the business lay entirely at the door of the marketing end. Such a view fails to take cognizance of many underlying factors; we can only expect to understand the distribution economics of the industry if we understand its general economics. We must realize also that the oil industry today is essentially the gasoline industry. The oil industry may be said to have begun about 60 years ago. At the outset it was concerned chiefly with the manufacture and sale of kerosene, lubricating oils and greases. Gasoline was then a most obnoxious by-product. The early oil-marketing company was engaged almost exclusively in refining and marketing—it did not concern itself with production but bore the relation to it merely of a purchaser. It may be said that the urge of marketing development in those days, therefore, came from the refining and marketing end of the business. The raw material had not yet begun to exert its enormous pressure, nor had the producer of crude oil acquired a direct interest in the sale of the ultimate finished products. Since then great changes have taken place. With the development of the automobile came a vast new demand for the raw material from which gasoline could be made. No longer could the refining and marketing companies be indifferent to the source of that raw material, particularly in view of the pessimistic outlook then presented as to the probable quantity of oil in existence. Unlike most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are—I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital—it is not those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fairness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude—his refusal to accept them as masters—that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united. Howe's Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. IN reviewing the aerial cameras produced in different countries, it becomes apparent that in nearly all of them an attempt has been made to secure the greatest possible angle of view. This angle, of course, is determined by the objective. The objectives most commonly in use in aerial cameras have a maximum angle of 65°. The objective developed for this new Zeiss camera combines freedom from distortion and brilliant definition, with an angle of 95°. Aerial mapping, it is claimed, has been placed on a different economic basis, and new possibilities presented, par-ticularly in connection with automatic stereoscopic plotting instruments, to which some short references are made. One way of enlarging the angle of view is to couple several instruments with their axes convergent, thereby producing a multilens camera. Typi-cal of cameras of this sort in the United States is the Bagley four-lens camera, which later was developed into the five-lens camera (T3-A) of the U. S. Air Corps. More recently, in order to get away from the unfavorable Maltese cross image field of the five-lens camera, and to obtain a more practical form, two five-lens cameras were combined. By using them in tandem and rotating them by 45° relatively to each other, a ten-lens camera was produced, covering an octagonal ground area, with a total angle of view of 140°. Similar designs have been evolved in other countries. In all of them, however, a number of difficulties have arisen, quite apart from their large weight and high cost. Because of their complex mechanism, numerous shutters and magazines, and the high precision with which these parts must be interadjusted and synchronized, these cameras are far from dependable. Moreover, a multilens camera by itself does not yet constitute a complete outfit for producing pictures suitable for photogrammetric survey. Because all the component pictures, except the central one, are obliques, it is always necessary to employ rectifying apparatus which transforms the marginal views to the perspective of the central one. INTRODUCTION THIS discussion is based on statistical manipulation and evaluation of operating data from several commercial blast furnaces which include rather wide variations in practice. We are concerned here mainly with the effect of manganese on sulphur elimination under operating conditions in commercial blast furnaces, but this effect can be outlined more clearly by including certain other variables such as silicon in iron and slag basicity, which are all in part interrelated. Real progress in understanding all of the smelting-zone reactions in this process requires more laboratory studies of slagmetal melts similar to those in the blast furnace, with careful control of oxygen pressure. Such experimental work is very difficult, however, and in the meantime, with the present scarcity of more fundamental data, such statistical trends and correlations as can be obtained from commercial furnace operating records may help in choosing laboratory test conditions as well as adding to our knowledge of operating procedures. We do not know just why the furnace data are apparently so irregular that statistical treatment of large numbers is needed to obtain accurate trends. It is .partly caused, no doubt, by the many simultaneous variables present, but there are perhaps also such factors as: (I) the continual swings up and down so characteristic of the process; (2) difficulty of accurate sampling of co-existing phases, as well as (3) the presence of both equilibrium and rate factors as a result of the fast driving of the process, In desulphurization, for example, the flow of thin layers of slag and metal over solid coke surfaces, plus the contact between droplets of iron falling through the slag layer in the hearth, would lead one to expect a close approach to equilibrium, On the other hand, most of the critical part of sulphur removal may occur in a short time and distance below the tuyeres with perhaps an accompanying decrease in oxygen pressure and the concurrent reduction of much of the silicon and manganese, so its degree of approach to equilibrium may be quite variable. PROBABLE CHEMISTRY OF DESULPHURIZATION Since there is little evidence that sulphur atoms in the iron solution are associated to any appreciable extent in molecules such as MnS, the transfer from slag to metal and back again can be written:* [(FeS) -, [FeS],[I] hence the following reactions seem most probable in the slag phase, (FeS) + (CaO) = (CaS) + (FeO), [2] and, (FeS) + (MnO) ;:2 (MnS) + (FeO). Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915. In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various boiate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 122 m (400 ft) deep, 910 m (3000 ft) long and 305 m (1000 ft wide). The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% colemanite (CB6011 5H20), about 40% probertite (NaCaB50g 5H20), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBgOg 5H20). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade colemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder, which is the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content, which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations. Laboratory Calcination and Air Tabling Tests Laboratory calcination tests showed that substantial upgrading of the borate could be accomplished by calcining followed by screening of the calcined material. Removal of the + 28 mesh calcine resulted in borate losses of less than 10% with a rejection of 40 weight % or more of the calcine. The minus 65 mesh calcine generally met the requirement of containing 48%, or more, B203. The minus 28 plus 65 mesh material contained an intermediate quantity of borate and would require additional treatment. Testing demonstrated that ore would not have to be reduced to a size finer than 19 mm (3/4 in.) prior to calcination. A temperature range from 400 to 455OC (750 to 850°F) was apparently satisfactory. Calcination at a temperature of 48Z°C (900°F), or higher, was unsatisfactory due to fusion. All laboratory calcination tests were static tests conducted by placing small covered charges in a laboratory furnace for 40 min. In all tests vapor issues from the furnace for 5 to 7 min. Following this period the ore could be heard "popping," due to decrepitation of the colemanite. The reaction generally continued for approximately one-half hour. Various size fractions of the calcination products from laboratory tests were subjected to laboratory air tabling tests, usually after removing the plus 28 mesh material. Laboratory air tabling tests were conducted employing a Whippet V-80 model air table manufactured by Sutton, Steele and Steele Co. now known as Tripple S Dynamics. Variables include both end and side-tilt, speed of vibration, and quantity of air rising through the deck. In addition to the variables in the machine itself, the feed rate is also a rather critical variable. Testing demonstrated that all - 28 mesh size fractions of the calcine could be successfully concentrated to 48% F2O3 or greater. For the finer material recoveries into the concentrate were between 85 and 90% of the borate. With the coarser material a substantial amount of middling was produced which required cleaner tabling. Laboratory calcination and air tabling tests indicated a process whereby the borate could be concentrated to about 50% B203 with borate recoveries approaching 90%. Moreover, the iron content of the concentrate was well below the required specification of 0.3% Fe2O3. Pilot Plant Calcination Following the laboratory test work described above, pilot plant testing was conducted to prove the process, provide data for engineering studies, and provide product for a prospective purchaser. The kiln used was 0.9 m-diam (3 ft) by 9.0 m (30 ft) long and had a belly section 1.2 m-diam (4 ft) by 2.74 m (9 ft) long near the discharge end. The kiln was operated at a speed of 0.7 rpm. Gas was fired into the kiln at an average rate of 27.1 m3/hr (958.4 cu ft per hr). The air to gas ratio used was 10:1. The ore was fed to the kiln countercurrent to the flame and discharged through a hopper into a screw conveyor which discharged to a 1.2 m (48 in.) Sweco separator. The separator had 28, 65, and 150 mesh screen cloths, with the plus 28 mesh fraction being discarded. The minus 28 mesh fractions were later subjected to air tabling. The exit gases, containing some calcine dust, were swept through two cyclones to recover the dust. The gases then were scrubbed in a Ducon scrubber; very little dust reported past the first cyclone. THE early history and progress of anthracite stripping, from the first known operation at Summit Hill in 1821 through 1917, was covered in 1917 in a paper by J. B. Warriner,1 then chief engineer, now president of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co., and stripping methods between 1917 and 1931 were the subject of a paper in 1931 by H. H. Otto,2 of the Hudson Coal Company. The present paper is confined to methods used today on pitching beds in the western middle and southern anthracite fields. The anthracite industry, not unlike other large industries, had been affected for more than a decade by the adverse economic conditions of the country. High development and operating costs and the competition of other fuels caused some collieries to be closed temporarily, while others were permanently abandoned. In order to obtain a larger tonnage at a lower development cost, a larger stripping program was put into effect by many companies. In 1932, stripping operations accounted for 334 million tons, or 7 per cent of the total anthracite production of the year, and in the next 10 years this increased until more than double that amount, or over 14 per cent of the total production, was from stripping operations. These figures represent the total production of the entire anthracite region; unfortunately, the figures have not been separated from the different fields. There are some operations in the southern and middle western fields where the tonnage obtained from stripping amounts to more than 30 per cent of the total colliery production. Stripping operations on pitching beds present difficult problems. Owing to the various geological formations, a different situation is encountered in nearly every stripping pit; and because of the proximity of an overlying bed, it is very often necessary to load the entire overburden into trucks and haul it out of the pit to the dump area, although back filling and casting is done whenever possible. Beds in the areas described in this paper pitch from 20° to 90° and some are on the invert in, many sharp folds and faults. PLANNING The more successful strippings have had adequate engineering analysis. Some work is being done without much preliminary planning, but many strippings would have failed completely if close supervision by the engineering department had not been maintained. Locations of stripping areas are determined as follows: 1. By constructing cross sections over the areas and drilling sufficient diamond-drill or well drill holes to study the strata and to determine the location, thickness and pitch of the beds.

The time-to-fracture test has been applied to pure platinum and to two alloys of platinum under the special conditions of small cross-sectional area of the specimens and of a test temperature above the annealing temperature. While the results are similar in character to those secured with large specimens of steel at temperatures below the annealing temperatures, two differences are noted: (I) an upward inflection in the curves for log stress vs. log time for the alloys, and (2) a sharp break in the curve for log stress vs. log time for pure platinum when single crystals filled the wire. The experiments showed that: (I) platinum and 10 per cent rhodium-platinum maintained their strengths at IIOO°C. better than did to per cent iridium-platinum, and (2) the rhodium-platinum after a time exceeded the iridium-platinum in strength at IIOO°C. Platinum alloys in their service at high temperatures encounter conditions somewhat similar to those that exist in the usual form of the "time-to-fracture"l test with steel. This paper is intended primarily to present results obtained by a "time-to-fracture" test under conditions approximating actual service for platinum (at the temperature IIOO°C. under oxidizing conditions) with three materials, pure platinum (99.99 per cent), a platinum alloy with 10 per cent iridium, and a platinum alloy with 10 per cent rhodium. The experimental procedure differed from that previously used in this type of measurement in that the samples were of small diameter (0.010 in.), were fully annealed, and were tested at a temperature definitely above their annealing points (600°C., IOOO°C. and 1050°C., respectively, for 60 per cent cold reduction and 15 min. heating time2,3). The experimental arrangement was similar to that previously described,' using as heating unit a small, horizontal, platinum-wound furnace, ½ by 12 in., maintained at constant temperature by an automatic controller. The samples were 0.010-in. wires, which had been annealed at 1200°C. by drawing them slowly through the furnace. The time-to-fracture was measured electrically. Elongation was not determined because of the difficulties inherent in the experimental arrangement. Life—that is, the time-to-fracture—was considered the important property in these first tests. No attempt was made to measure the reduction in area, but the types of fracture were noted qualitatively; in the text they are referred to as (I) the normal, plastic, or necked fracture, (2) the knife-edge fracture, and (3) the brittle or intercrystalline fratture with small reduction of area. Results for different constant applied stresses are plotted in Fig. I. In all cases at least two trials were made for each stress, although they cannot always be indicated separately on the curves. HEAT Treatment at 1500' F of a mild steel containing 0.1 pct C, in an atmosphere which is oxidizing to both carbon and iron, results in the progressive oxidation of the metal surface with little or no change in the carbon content of the underlying metal. Further heat treatment of the scaled metal in either a neutral atmosphere or in a vacuum may or may not result in the decarburization of the metal depending upon the physical nature of the scale. It is apparent that if a continuous layer of oxide is present on the steel surface, the reaction OScale + Cmetal Cogas cannot progress since the SO formed gas would be unable to leave the oxide/metal interface. Thus, in order for the reaction to progress, the oxide must be cracked or porous. Vacuum heat treatment at 1500" F of samples with a thick continuous oxide scale showed no decarburization of the steel. However, when cracks were introduced mechanically into the scale prior to the vacuum heat treatment notable decarburization of the metal resulted and a structure as shown by Fig. 1 obtained, i.e., reduction of the crack walls to ferrite. With reference to the diagram of Fig. 2, it would appear that a mechanism of the following type takes place. Carbon atoms arriving at an oxide/metal/void interface, such as 'A', Fig. 2(a), can combine with oxygen atoms from the scale and leave the reaction site as Cogas thereby reducing the oxide to metal. On a greatly magnified scale, Fig. 2(b),this will appear as a ferrite projection along the crack wall. Carbon atoms entering this projection can react with oxygen atoms at point 'C', which is a new interface, and so on leading to a progressive growth of the ferrite along the crack wall and to the surface, Figs. 2 (c) and 1. It would appear that the only means by which thickening of the ferrite film can take place is by a diffusion of oxygen through the ferrite film to react with carbon at the newly formed ferrite/ void interface. Since the diffusion rate of carbon is reportedly much greater than that of oxygen, and since there is a low probability factor of oxygen and carbon atoms arriving simultaneously at the same site on the ferritehoid interface, there will be a tendency for more rapid lengthening than thickening of the ferrite layer, as is observed.

SUDBURY ore processed by International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. was recovered for many years as two mill concentrates, one primarily of copper, and the other mixed pentlandite-pyrrhotite, But, Since iron content of the nickeliferous pyrrhotite concentrate was ten times its nickel value, capacity of smelting was limited by the need for slagging the excess iron. A process for recovering the iron con- tent was developed after some years of research and a $20-million plant was constructed to employ the new method. Built near Copper Cliff, Ont., the plant started operation early in 1956, scheduled for separate treatment of 365,000 tons of pyrrhotite each year. It is only the first unit of an installation which will have a capacity of more than 1 million tons per year of pyrrhotite. By early 1958, production totaled more than 200,000 long tons of 68 pct Fe pellets containing 0.003 pct P, 1.5 pct SiO2, 0.01 pct S, and 0.15 pct Ni.

THE stage is set for the 1930 Annual Meeting. It will take place in the Engineering Societies Building. Feb. 17, 18, 19 and 20, and an unusual pro- gram of technical papers, symposia, lectures and addresses, interspersed with luncheons, dinners, excursions and worthwhile entertainment for the four days has been arranged. The curtain rises on Monday morning and the first act is by the entire company-registration. Then the meeting hits its stride, for there are ten technical sessions on Monday, and the range of subjects includes most of the Institute membership. The Committee on Coal and Coal Products, which is about to become the Coal Division, presents a symposium of a dozen or more papers on Coal Classification, concluding its afternoon session with several papers on general subjects. At its luncheon between sessions, C. E. Bockus, president of the National Coal Association, will be the honored guest. Papers of theoretical character will be discussed at the morning session of the Committee on Geophysical Prospecting; at its afternoon session there will be presented summaries of results obtained at various properties by methods described at previous meetings of this group and permanently recorded in "Geophysical Prospecting," published by the Institute early in 1929. Members of the Petroleum Division should not overlook the paper by Theodor Zuschlag, on this Committee's program. It is entitled, "Oil Structure Mapping by the Sundberg Method." Members of the Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals divisions will find it profitable to attend the session on Engineering Education on Monday afternoon. E. A. Holbrook has arranged a program of ten-minute talks on Metallurgical Education which are designed to get down to "brass tacks." and the practical man may, in discussion, contribute as well as learn. At 5 p. m. Thomas T. Read will lecture+ at Columbia University, on "Recent Progress in Economics of the Mineral Industries."

THE case of Henry Cort comprises: (1) the nature of Cort's inventions;, (2) their value to England and to mankind,; (3) the remuneration received therefor by him or his family; and (4) the suitable permanent record and recognition of his services by the representatives of the art lie founded-a debt long over-due, and still unpaid. I. CORT'S INVENTIONS. Under this head, it is unnecessary here to enter into details. The facts have been repeatedly published, and a brief outline of them will be sufficient for my present purpose. . Henry Cort, born in 1740 at Lancaster, England, became a navy broker in. London about 1765, and gained from that business in about ten years. something more than £20,000, which lie devoted to perfecting the manufacture of iron, building a mill at Fontley, near Portsmouth, and prosecuting, between 1777 and 1783, the experiments which culminated in .his two patents, one for puddling iron and the other for shaping it by rolling between grooved rolls.: Careful study of the contemporary evidence, including Cort's specifications, the testimony (in act as well as word) of his business rivals, the public declarations of eminent authorities, and the history of the times, leaves no possible doubt that Cort was the real inventor, of

The Ten Section oil field is located in the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, California. about 12 miles southwest of Bakersfield in Township 30 South, Ranges 25 and 26 East. The accumulation is in a low relief anticlinal dome and has a productive area of approximately 2,200 acres. Discovered in 1936 as a result of seismic work, it was the first field on the floor of the Valley to obtain production. It had a small primary gas cap, and since its inception has been produced by depletion with controlled withdrawal from the gas cap to minimize blowthrough. STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY The Ten Section structure is an elongated anticlinal dome with flank dips of only about 7 degrees. A map of the field, now fully developed, and a composite log are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Contours shown on the map are on the top of the first zone, or Marker XA as indicated on the composite log. As shown, the field has a productive closure of only some 350 feet, and there apparently is no faulting in the reservoir. The productive measures in Ten Section are of Upper Miocene age and are known as the Stevens sand. They contain thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks which vary considerably in stratigraphic position and thickness and apparently are rather discontinuous. As a result, individual sands and shales cannot be correlated over any appreciable area, which makes it difficult to subdivide the sand body into separate zones which are distinct throughout the field. However, there are two fairly persistent siltstone bodies that at the time of development were considered to divide the productive measures into three - zones. The first, or uppermost zone is productive over the entire field and has an average thickness of 180 feet, of which some 65 per cent is sand. It had a primary. gas cap in the crestal area with an areal extent of 930 acres. The second zone has a productive area somewhat smaller than the first zone, but it did not have any original gas cap. It has an average thickness of about 360 feet, of which 55 per cent is sand. The third zone has a very limited areal extent and a maximum productive thickness of 100 feet, of which 80 per cent is sand. Recently, a deeper oil accumulation, termed the "53" sand, was discovered, but it is not discussed in this analysis. In the first and second zones the water table was at 7,980 feet subsea, while in the third zone it was at 8,080 feet subsea. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS Sand Characteristics The Stevens sand in Ten Section is hard and well consolidated, and numerous wells were cored for core analysis. Core data on four representative wells are shown, plotted beside the electric logs in Figs. 3 to 6. The average porosity is 20 per cent, with porosities ranging from 15 to 30 per cent. It is estimated, from cores taken with oil base muds, that the interstitial water content is about 40 per cent.
