US 4,192,851-Recovery of elemental sulfur and the metal values from a complex sulfide ore containing two or more of the metals zinc, lead, copper, silver, gold and/or other metals. A mixture of ore and sulfuric acid and/or spent electrolyte is flowed at optimum temperature and pressure in a quiescent zone to dissolve selected metals and sulfur and coalesce the sulfur. The coalesced sulfur and unreacted sulfides are separated by flowing the leach slurry with an upward velocity component The separated materials are discharged and further processed by conventional methods as war- ranted. The authors have developed and tested a new method for measuring pellet-bed temperatures in the traveling-grate or the shaft furnace. This method-using silver-palladium alloy wires as indicators-is less costly and less time-consuming than existing methods. Silver palladium wires, having specific melting points in the 2000° to 2500°F range, are enclosed in ceramic capsules. Each capsule is placed in a nichrome wire basket filled with a sample of green pellets, the baskets being the means for recovering the capsule after firing. After the encapsulated wires have been exposed to the firing cycle, the alloy wires are examined to determine the maximum temperatures attained by the pellet sample. This gives accurate, rapid determinations of maximum temperatures attained during pellet induration in either the traveling-grate or shaft furnace.

Gardner I?. Williams, authority on diamond mining, died at San Francisco, Cal., on Aug. 22, after an illness of nearly a year. Mr. Williams, who was in his eighty-first year, was born in Saginaw, Mich. He was graduated from the University of California in 1865, and afterward took a course at the Freiberg Mining Academy in Saxony. He was awarded the degree of LII. D. by the University of California in 1910, and Doctor of Engineering by the University of Michigan in 1917. A standard technique for heat treating small metallurgical samples where no appreciable contamination from the atmosphere can be tolerated is that of sealing small samples in evacuated fused-silica tubes. Since vitreous silica is relatively impervious to diffusion of gases, even at temperatures approaching the devitrification range, around 1100°C, this simple procedure has been very widely adopted as a standard technique in metallurgical research. A technique using propellants has been developed for producing multiple fractures about a wellbore. The use of propellants having a range of burn rates permits precise control of combustion gas release and thereby of borehole pressurization. The pressure rise- time is the key variable governing fracture behavior. The peak pressure attained is of secondary importance and appears to be a function of in situ stress and loading rate. The fracture geometry is governed by the in situ stresses and pressure risetimes. The major fractures occur along the principal planes of stress and along apparent planes of maximum shear stress.

The Paloma anticline, a large dome modified by faults, is the largest single closed dome in the southern San Joaquin Valley without surface outcrop or topographic expression. D ETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and dewatering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.1
